We had the opportunity to do the coffee and chocolate farm tour with Sara. It was so easy to have medellinDay trips book in the website! The day before they contacted us to give us details of who was our guide. The guide arrived at our hotel to pick us up and we traveled to the local farm. Be warned that when they say hike, it really is 20-25min hike UPHILL incline for about 700ft to get to the top of the coffee farm! José at the farm greeted us with homemade limeade and Sara walked through a very detail process of how Colombian coffee is harvested and made. Jose then gave us baskets to pick our own beans! We got to see it go through the machine and we made some cold press and cold brew coffee. Note: if you want to purchase any of the local coffee bring pesos! After our coffeee experience we hiked back down for a banana wrapped traditional Colombian lunch that was very filling! Then we had a quick tour of the coffee flowers and trees before we got to open cacao, grind and make our own chocolate bars. This was definitely a local farm experience with a lot of passion for what they do here. We appreciated Sara passion and historical knowledge and expertise! I would definitely recommend this for smaller groups and those that can make the hike up to the top of the mountain!

Itinerary
First Stop: Discover the Art of Colombian Coffee Your adventure begins with pickup at your accommodation in Medellín. We'll drive approximately one hour north through beautiful countryside landscapes to reach a family-owned coffee farm. Upon arrival, we'll leave the vehicle at a nearby farm and enjoy a scenic 10–15-minute uphill hike to the coffee plantation. Although the natural trail can be steep, the spectacular views make every step worthwhile! Once at the farm, our welcoming host will greet you with a delicious cup of premium Colombian coffee. Then, a coffee expert will introduce you to Colombia's fascinating coffee culture. Best of all, this is a hands-on experience! Walk through the plantation, pick ripe coffee beans, and learn how to depulp, ferment, and dry them using traditional artisanal techniques. **Get closer to Colombia's coffee traditions and discover what makes its coffee so special!** *We recommend comfortable trekking shoes with good grip.*
**Second Stop: Traditional Lunch & Discover the World of Cacao** Before leaving, you'll also have the opportunity to purchase freshly roasted coffee to take home. Next, we'll say goodbye to our coffee farmer hosts and take a short walk to a nearby cacao farm. Before we start with the chocolate tour It's time to savor a delicious regional lunch! Enjoy an authentic homemade meal, rarely found in regular restaurants, accompanied by fresh farm-made lemonade and spectacular countryside views. After lunch, you'll discover the fascinating world of chocolate! Learn about cacao's history, plantation management, common pests, and sustainable farming practices. Then, explore the plantation, discover different local crops, and get ready for the first step of chocolate production: harvesting fresh cacao pods. **Meet local farmers, taste authentic Colombian food, and uncover the secrets behind two of Colombia's most beloved products: coffee and chocolate!**
**Discover the Art of Making Chocolate from Scratch!** Continue your cacao adventure by getting hands-on with the traditional chocolate-making process. *Fermenting & Drying* Open fresh cacao pods, extract the sweet raw beans, and taste them! Then, learn how farmers ferment the beans in wooden boxes for six days before sun-drying them for 5–10 days. **Roasting & Grinding** Watch the beans roast over a wood fire, creating a subtle smoky flavor. Next, remove their husks and grind them until they become smooth, freshly made chocolate. *Create Your Own Chocolate!* Here's the fun part! Mix your freshly ground chocolate with ingredients like vanilla, ginger, lemon zest, salt, or other creative flavors. Shape your unique creation into a mold and let it set in the fridge. This is more than a chocolate tasting! It's an authentic experience on real working farms, where you'll discover how local farmers grow and transform premium cacao and coffee. *Take home a delicious memory of Colombia!*

Enjoyed every moment of it : great balance of walking , history, action and exploring the nature . Sarah is super energetic and passionate about Colombia . The ride is smooth , (will not make you car sick), and you will get to know the hardworking farm family , pick coffee and chocolate beans and then make your own coffee and chocolate , have a hearty meal and come back energized.
The Medellin coffee and chocolate tour exceeded our expectations and Sara was an exceptional guide. We loved learning about the process of harvesting the coffee beans and cacao fruits and participating in the process of making our own chocolate bars. Sara was so very knowledgeable about the farms, the production processes, the city of Medellin and surrounding areas. We could tell she had a warm relationship with the farmers. We had such a lovely day with Sara and the farmers.
Wonderful tour experience! Sara was a great tour guide, she explained everything well and was great to spend time with. This is the only tour that offers a combination of coffee and chocolate, and I'm glad we got to see both. It is a bit of a hike to reach the coffee farm, but we took it at an easy pace and were able to make it (just keep that in mind if an uphill hike may be challenging for anyone in your group). Highly recommend!
Such a great and unique experience! Alejandro, our guide, was excellent—so knowledgeable, friendly, and was alsp genuinely interested in learning about the little island we’re originally from. Sharing our experiences of growing up in tropical countries made the day feel even more special. We loved being able to experience and get involved in every step of the coffee and chocolate-making process. It was such a hands-on and authentic experience, and that’s what made it truly unique. Thank you, Alejandro, for an excellent day and for making the experience so memorable! ❤️ Love Rishini and Sach
We had a fantastic experience, far from the crowds, thanks to our wonderful guide, Andrés. He took us to remote, family-run fincas where everyone welcomed us as if we were part of the family. The coffee and chocolate-making processes were explained clearly, with genuine passion and warmth, making the visit both educational and incredibly enjoyable. The homemade lunch was absolutely delicious, and the freshly prepared coffee and chocolate were simply outstanding. Anyone visiting Medellín should take the time to enjoy this authentic escape into the countryside. It’s a perfect break from the city and an unforgettable experience. Thank you, Andrés, for such a memorable day!
This was a spectacular introduction to coffee and chocolate production, and Andrés was a perfect guide. We were so thankful to meet José, Alicia, and Sandra. Dog lovers will adore our all extra helpers along the way!
From start to finish, this was an amazing experience, and a lot of that credit goes to Sara. She is incredibly knowledgeable about every step of the cacao and coffee process, and her passion for it really comes through. On top of that, she is charismatic, warm, and just a genuinely wonderful person to spend time with. The fincas themselves were beautiful, and the people there were so welcoming and kind, we felt well taken care of throughout the entire visit. And of course, the chocolate and coffee were absolutely delicious. If you're looking for an authentic, educational, and heartfelt experience, look no further. Highly recommend!
Excellent experience, again. This was our second tour with Laura and it’s been great. Would highly recommend this tour through these guys. Very attentive, excellent communication and very knowledgeable. Thank you!!!
Awesome experience touring the coffee and chocolate farms. Sara our guide was the best, incredibly knowledgable and friendly. Definitely recommended...
I spent a long time looking for different coffee tours. This one was the most expensive one but also the only one that included the cacao farm. I was a bit suspicious about seeing only good reviews but I can say that it was absolutely worth the money we spent. It was an amazing day. A very intimate experience that taught us a lot of about some products we consume regularly. The families running both farms were lovely and the area was absolutely beautiful. A small paradise not far from Medellín. Alejo who drove us there and was our guide for the day, was great. We couldn’t have asked for a better tour and I am more than glad we decided to spend more money rather than go on a tour with 20 other people. If you’re undecided - this is the tour you’re gonna want to book.
Our tour guide, Sara, was fantastic. We were taken through the entire process of making both coffee and chocolate, and she was very passionate about both the tour and Medellin overall!
Seriously the best tour!! Laura was an amazing guide and had so much knowledge that she shared with us, not only at the coffee and chocolate tours but also all the way there and back about the area of Medellin and Colombia! The car trip was just as much part of the tour as everything else. The coffee farm was amazing! Jose has a wonderful farm and it was so cool to see how he does things. I appreciated him sharing his knowledge and the fact that it was a small farm. His coffee was wonderful! We learned about everything from planting the coffee plants to harvest and roasting the beans and then how to make wonderful coffee! Then there was Sandra’s chocolate farm which again was so awesome because it was a small family farm! There we learned about the cacao trees from planting to harvest and drying and roasting the cacao beans and then we made delicious chocolate! There was a nice little hike between the two farms to get up to Jose’s farm then back down to Sandra’s farm. Both families were absolutely lovely and it was so nice to meet them! Oh and the lunch was wonderful. Laura’s English was also fantastic and she did such a good job of providing all the information in English and translating the information Sandra and Jose provided! I can’t say enough good things about this tour and Laura!
MedellínDayTrips is awesome. I travel a lot and I'm actually a repeat customer because they nail the balance between fun and educational. Highly recommend! I travel all the time, and honestly, a lot of guided tours can be pretty boring or dry. That is definitely not the case here. I actually requested Sarah as my guide again for this trip because she’s so amazing. She has a wealth of knowledge, but is super laid-back, so you actually learn a ton about the city and country without feeling like you're in a lecture. We did the Comuna 13 and fruit tour, plus the coffee and chocolate farm, and both were great. I also have to shout out the owner, Andrés. We had a schedule conflict pop up one day, and he made it super easy to rearrange our itinerary with zero stress.
Alejo was a great tour guide, he knew so many interesting things! He was a great driver. We enjoyed the chocolate farm and especially learning about chocolate and making our own bars. Thank you Sandra and Alisha
This tour was the highlight of our Medellin trip. The farmers and workers are some of the nicest hardest working people I have even seen. The tour guide was excellent her English was perfect. I couldn't recommend this tour more.
The tour (locations) and Laura was very interesting and personal. We learned a lot about coffee and chocolate, the area and the people living there. The best experience
This was truly a fantistic experience we will never forget! Laura, our guide, is super friendly and service minded and extremely knowledgeable. We learned so much about producing cacao and coffee, and experienced the whole process from the fruit in the trees to finished products. The farms are beautiful and authenic- no industrial production. Gorgeous flowers and exotic friuts, farm animals and welcomming staff. We recommend this travel agency 100%- worth every pesos!
We had such an amazing time with Sara as our guide. We went as a family with 2 children, and enjoyed every moment. Would definitely recommend!
Lau was an amazing guide. She spent most of the day with us, and was very patient, informative, charsmatic with my friends and I. I highly recommend her and this tour, when you are in Medellin!
Sara is an amazing guide. We learned a lot about chocolate and coffee and about Colombia. The farms are also very friendly. Very accommodating for our kids!
The experience was phenomenal! We absolutely loved Sara as a guide and the whole experience was beyond perfect! The weather was fantastic for it, having the farms be quiet was so nice, the mountain ranges and views are absolutely stunning! We thoroughly enjoyed our day, and we are both so insanely grateful that other couple cancelled. Thank you so much! Delicious and highly educational experience!
I can definitely join the many glowing reviews on MedellinDayTrips. I had the pleasure to go on the Coffee and Chocolate farm tour with Sara and it was a fantastic day from start to finish. Sara picked me up at my accomodation in Laureles and we immediately started to talk, chat and laugh. She is a person full of energy and with an abundant wealth of knowledge that she happily shares, so I already learned a lot about Colombia during our one hour drive to the farms. We started with the coffee farm which is a nice hike up a hill and owned by a lovely lady (actually a couple but I only met the lady) and then walked a bit down the same hill to the chocolate farm also owned by a lovely woman, both were very kind and welcoming. During all activities, Sara translated (as my Spanish is pretty bad) and it was very clear that she had a very warm and close relation to the two farm owners. I learned so much about coffee and chocolate production, thank you so much, Sara, Ana and Sandra! On the ride back, Sara even helped me find an ATM in Medellin before she safely dropped me off back at my accomodation. Let me also mention that before I booked the tour, the communication with Andrés was amazing. In my many years of travelling, I probably never had someone answering this quickly and comprehensively to my initial questions. Andrés was also very patient with some of my probably strange or tricky questions (like about dietary details of meals or tailoring a tour) and I really appreciate this. After deciding for this specific tour and booking it, he was always available and made sure the tour went great. Thank you again Sara and Andrés for an unforgettable day! <3 See you next time! And to all fellow tourists, please support this locally owned agency, I can recommend them wholeheartedly
Flawless experience. Alejandro was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. 100% recommend and encourage everyone visiting Medellín to get out of the city and see authentic Colombia.
Laura was fantastic—warm, knowledgeable, and fluent in English, Spanish, and even some German. She had a great rapport with the farmers, drove us safely both ways, and made the whole coffee and chocolate tour relaxed and memorable. The tour company was also friendly and very well organised in arranging everything.
great experience! We had a lovely time. Amazing tour guide. Good chocolate. Good coffee. Would do again. Cumbia is an amazing genre.
I can’t imagine a better day trip! Our guide Alejo was as friendly and knowledgeable as anyone my wife and I have ever met. We are so grateful he was our guide, he made our trip truly special. The farm tour including the coffee and chocolate production were also very special. Many thanks to the owners and their hospitality. 500 stars!
We were so fortunate to have Alejandro as our guide. From the beginning, we connected with him as if we were old friends catching up. As we drove through Medellín on our way out to the coffee and cacao farm, he took the time to explain to us the history of the country from before the time Bolívar broke up Gran Colombia up to the present day, and over the extremely diverse geographic regions that make up the distinct foods and cultures that make up the Colombia of the Amazon compared to Andean Colombia. Pacific Colombia, and Caribbean Colombia. As many Americans tend to know very little about South America, I was so fortunate to get so much time to learn from Alejandro. This only made our trip at the farm that much more special. The farm itself was perfect for the children that joined us, as they were free to explore and feed the very hungry chickens and play with the endlessly flowing mountain water draining into a basin. During that time, we got to eat fresh fruit from the land while Alejandro took us on a trip to enlighten us to the global history of coffee and chocolate, and how Colombia became a premier grower of both. Through it all he helped us understand the struggles that local farmers have had to endure, both to their health as well as financially, . Harvesting and brewing coffee and experiencing the differences in processing was itself so special. And being able to open up a cacao fruit, roast it and turn it into chocolate that we ate that very day was such a special experience. I've had coffee from all over the world, but I've never had any coffee as good as what we got to drink and purchase from the farm. This trip is for those that really want to immerse themselves with the people and history of Colombia. Thank you Alejandro!
This tour was great. The tour company representative Andres was extremely helpful. He always promptly answered any question I had and even helped us find a group tour with another company. The tour guide was Sara, and she was fantastic. She was extremely knowledgeable and was a very sweet and caring person. I could not have asked for a better experience and thank Medellin Day trips for our great memory of a lifetime. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
What an incredible, authentic experience with guide Laura. I have been traveling around the world for about 3 months and this was one of my favorite tours. The coffee and cocoa farms you visit are owned by really amazing and welcoming people. They make you feel like family. The farms have all types of birds, different fruit trees and plants. The views are amazing. My guide for this tour was Laura. She has incredible energy and is fun to be around, as well as incredibly knowledgeable about the cocoa and coffee production process. She even spoke about the plants’ ability to grow on a cellular level and I was impressed. Another amazing thing about Laura is her ability to speak English perfectly. Rarely do you get a guide that is able to act as a perfect translator between you and the local people you meet. I really enjoyed this tour and I would highly recommend Laura as a guide.
We did the coffee and cacao farm tour and it was the highlight of our trip. Our guide for the day, Sara, was amazing, her energy and enthusiasm were contagious and we learned a lot about not only coffee and chocolate but also general Colombian life and history. It was lovely meeting the farmers and their family, we really felt like we were experiencing their authentic life. This was definitely not a touristy experience which was a relief after some of the other things we did in Medellín. Much love Rob and Laura
This tour is a must if you have limited time to experience and learn about the coffee and cacao farming business in Colombia. Laura- our tour guide, ensured that we would have a memorable, educational experience. We were picked up at the time of our choice. Our drive to the farm was fun. Laura's bubbly personality was very enjoyable. No questions went unanswered. This was a first hand look at the "Ma and Pa" operations of small Cacao and Coffee farms in the Medellin area. You not only learn the whole process, you get to participate in the procedures. The short walk up the mountain was a bit challenging but worth it. Thank you Laura. We highly recommend this tour!
Such an awesome experience! Andres was beyond accommodating and the farm hosts were the kindest people ever! Such a renewed appreciation for coffee and chocolate.
Our trip to Medellín was a highlight thanks to an incredible coffee and cacao experience. We visited a local coffee farm nestled in the hills, where we picked cherries, learned the full process from bean to cup, and enjoyed the freshest brew we’ve ever had. In the afternoon, we explored a cacao farm, where we made our own chocolate from scratch—cracking pods, roasting beans, and crafting our own bars. The hands-on approach and warm hospitality made it unforgettable. Sara, our tour guide was very attentive and very knowledgeable. More than just tastings, the experience offered real insight into Colombia’s rich culture and traditions. Highly recommended for anyone looking to explore beyond the city and connect with the roots of two of the world’s most beloved flavors.
This was the highlight of our trip! Alejandro was engaging with our kids and we learned so much about cacao and coffee. I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting an authentic experience!
Absolutely wonderful tour! Laura was our guide and was so welcoming and very knowledgeable. It was a wonderful tour, and we highly recommend it!
This was an amazing tour! Our guide Laura was absolutely fabulous! She was so welcoming and knowledgeable. We were skeptical of a long tour, however we are so happy we took a chance as it was the highlight of our trip to Medellín. Highly recommend!
This is a wonderful tour for families with children. Our guide, Laura was very engaging and knowledgeable. We enjoyed learning about the coffe and chocolate making process. The farm owners made us feel very welcomed. The views are spectacular!
Sara was a fun and knowledgeable guide. The family farms that we visited were very welcoming. A must to experience real Columbian farm life!
Such an amazing experience. Felt like a local. Highly recommend supporting these local farmers. A truly unforgettable experience. We spent the day with local chocolate farmers, learning each step of the process—from picking cacao to crafting our own handmade treats. It was hands-on, heartfelt, and deeply rooted in tradition. The guide created space for genuine connection, making the experience feel personal and authentic rather than touristy. A beautiful way to understand the culture through its people and flavors.
We loved the experience! Laura was incredible! She was so fun and knowledgeable. The farms were very cute and I learned so much. 🥰🥰🥰
I am so glad that we decided to do this tour as it was an amazing experience. We could not have asked for a better guide, Sara was perfect for us! Her kindness, knowledge and warmth made for an unforgettable day. The two farms we visited were so beautiful and the families who owned them were so welcoming and made us feel comfortable. This was a hands on tour which we enjoyed as it really gave us a deeper understanding and appreciate for the chocolate and coffee that we love!

Exceptional tour..Laura (our guide) and Sandra (family that owns the farm) and we have to also acknowledge Alicia whose farm we were not able to go to due to unforeseen weather reasons for an incredible experience. Laura has amazing energy, has a great way to present the processes of making coffee from the start of the plant, to the flower, to the bean and tahdah coffee. Sandra took us to pick beans and also Cocoa plants. Came back to learn the process of making coffee and we made our own chocolate bars all from scratch.. plant to roasting.. Beautiful Farm, beautiful Family and Laura has an amazing relationship with them. We feel very fortunate to have had such a great day.. we felt like family.
We had the most wonderful day trip with Sarah! We are a family of 5 (ages 4, 7, and 9) and this trip was one of the highlights for all of us! Sarah was patience with stopping along the way as we needed and letting our kids enjoy the nature in their own time. There is a large hill to climb so keep that in mind, but no issues as we stopped several times to see the horses, cows, plants and animals along the way. They LOVED picking their own coffee beans and cacao pods. We have done coffee and chocolate things in other countries but this truly was so wonderful being completely individualized for us. We enjoyed delicious coffee and chocolate made by us! The lunch included was also delicious. We highly recommend this tour with BOTH the chocolate and coffee- don’t miss either!
We had an amazing experience, our guide Laura was incredibly knowledgeable about everything from the country and region to the flora and fauna of the coffee and chocolate houses we visited. I would highly recommend this tour. My family was in Colombia for a wedding and this is how we used our free day, you will not regret it! Excellent food for lunch and they were very accommodating of the various dietary restrictions (vegetarians) and food allergies (gluten intolerance). We got to make our own chocolate bars after picking cacao off the trees, make coffee after seeing the full growing process it was wonderful. Do be warned that part of the trip (at least our trip) required quite a steep walk uphill and was not accessible for my mother who is approaching 70 and had to stay with the lovely family who hosted our chocolate tasting while the rest of us went up to the coffee house.
My friend and I booked this private tour and immediately I knew it would be a great experience the moment Sara picked us up from our hotel! She is such a sweet, smart, knowledgeable guide, and we learned so much about the country on our drive to the coffee and chocolate farms outside of the city in the mountains. The 2 farms were so amazing with beautiful views of the mountainside and valley, and SO many stunning flowers and plants. The experience at both of the local farm owners was unique, leaning and doing the process that they do daily to produce the coffee and chocolates. Both farms had the sweetest local owners who treated us like family and we were welcomed into their homes. The lunch was absolutely delicious as well! Sara was the absolute best guide for this tour, as she is so interested in agriculture and knowledgeable about everything in nature in Colombia, full of energy, and is a total sweetheart as well. The coffee was delicious and the chocolate experience was so fun as well, as you get to make your own flavored chocolate bars! There is an opportunity to buy the coffee and chocolate made at that very farm. These farms are very small and not mass produced, so it felt really special to be able to help out the true local hard working Colombians, and everything they get from hosting these tours goes towards making their farms more functional and special for the guests. 10/10 experience, just do it!

This tour was amazing and I highly recommend anyone to book it! If you are looking for something that is less touristy this is definitely what you want! Our tour guide Sara was incredible and made the whole day memorable. We were able to spend the day learning all about coffee from a local farmer (Jose), taste test the freshest coffee and purchase bags to take home. Then we had a delicious lunch prepared by the lovely owners of the cacao farm, Sandra and Elisia. Afterwards we hiked through the cacao farm to learn all about the different types of cacao trees and then worked through the whole process of making our own chocolate from scratch! And we were able to purchase fresh chocolate on the way out. Everyone was very welcoming and hospitable, and the beauty of their farms was truly spectacular! This was 1 of our top experiences while in Medellín! Thank you Sara, Elisia, Sandra and Jose for an amazing experience!
My wife and I had an unforgettable experience on the coffee and chocolate tour. Our tour guide, Sara, was excellent — incredibly knowledgeable, super fun and energetic, and extremely hospitable. We tried raw coffee beans and cocoa seeds, saw the process of roasting and preparing each, and were able to enjoy what we made and bring some home. During the process, we met the amazing family who runs the farm and enjoyed a wonderful homemade lunch at their home. These experiences are not available at home or anywhere close — it was truly special and unique to get this kind of view into the production of two commonly consumed goods, as well as a look at life for the amazing people who produce/grow them. A major highlight was learning what kind of diseases the plants undergo in the wild, and then what is done with the diseased fruits — something not commonly discussed in museums or even commercial production plants. Kudos to Sara for sharing the insider intel! An 8-hour day tour sounded daunting at first, but by the end we were sad it was over. Thank you!!
