Itinerary
Visitors tour an interactive exhibit featuring the story of real-life pirate "Black Sam" Bellamy and his fabled beloved Maria Hallett. Visitors will be able to see and touch real pirate treasure from the wreck of Bellamy's ship, the Whydah Gally. The Whydah was a slave ship-turned pirate ship which wrecked off of the Cape Cod coastline in 1717 following a violent storm. Artifacts and real treasure have been pulled from the bottom of the ocean...surrounded by sharks...following the discovery of the ship's bell in 1984 by famed underwater explorer Barry Clifford. The exhibit renews regularly with the discovery of new artifacts by onsite archaeologists which visitors can witness with their own eyes. A video, photo experience and retail gift shop round out the visit. Groups are welcome.

It was a fun and interesting experience. It was cool to see actual artifacts from a shipwreck. Not interactive really though so do not expect that. Not big.
This was a surprisingly good museum. We learned the whole story of Sam Bellamy from a young man in love to his untimly death in a nor'easter off the coast of Cape Cod. Also learned how the shipwreck was found and items preserved.
It was awesome getting to see all of the authentic parts of the ship and accessories from the original ship that had been pulled out of the ocean and getting to learn about the ship’s history and crew, and about daily pirate life. Awesome stop in Salem!
We visited the Real Pirates Salem Museum after taking a walking tour, and it was an absolute delight. I am usually a bit bored with most museums, but this one kept me captivated the whole time. It started out with a little movie to give you a synopsis, and then a door opened to the exhibits. I liked it that the main “story” in the museum followed the pirate journey of “Black Sam” Bellamy and his crew as well as information about other famous pirates. These included Calico Jack, Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. I read every plaque which not only included interesting facts about pirates (and Sam Bellamy’s journey), but also the history of the slave trade that was involved with piracy at that time. The visual graphics were excellent and there were some unique exhibits that depicted the sounds of being in a ship with ropes rubbing, seagulls squawking, and the movement of the ocean. Others depicted lightning, waves, and storms, as well as some fabulous wax figures that showed what it could have been like being on a pirate ship eating dinner. I highly recommend taking the time for this museum. It was so cool!
Very informative and interesting pirate museum. I like that you tour at your pace and can take as long as you need. Teal treasure and artifacts from the real pirate ship Whydah.
Very interesting and well put together. A little bit of everything for history buffs all the way down to someone just looking for something fun. If you're looking for something a little different in Salem this is the place..
Very interesting seeing all the artifacts recovered from the pirate ship and the tales of the pirates themselves.
Exhibits salvaged and conserved from the pirate ship "Whydah Gally," which sank near West Yarmouth in 1717, are incredible. Barry Clifford and his team recovered such items are a strip of embroidered silk (which somehow survived 300 years beneath the waves), chests of Spanish gold and silver, cannon, even a few pieces of bone from which DNA was extracted to identify a couple of the pirates. One room shows how artefacts are cleaned and conserved. An amazing collection, not to be missed -- and they're still working on the wreck! Please note that there's a rival establishment down the street called (I think) the New England Pirate Museum. Don't confuse them. The Real Pirates Museum is the "Whydah Gally" collection.
Team is kind and fun. Fun experience and informative
We did the self guided tour and found it very informative and rich in history.
We greatly enjoyed the Real Pirates Museum. It was an interesting and educational experience with real artifacts and treasure discovered after nearly 270 years lost at sea.
Started the tour with a brief film overview of who and what we were going to see in the galleries. The artifacts and information signs were well displayed and flowed seamlessly. The murals really added to the experience. We appreciated the short bios of several of the crew members. And we all appreciated the friendly staff and the fact they didn’t pressure you with sales pitches for their gift shop. We highly recommend this museum.
This was a lovely excursion! I was greeted by the owner herself, and she was so kind. The presentation was awesome. The artifacts were great, and I really enjoyed myself with this museum. Easy access, great location. I would recommend this stop!
This is our second time, and it was Fascinating and hit the right spot between a fun experience and learning about the wreck of this amazing ship, the WHYDAH, that sank off the coast of Welfleet several hundred years ago with a reported $800 million in treasure.
Our boys really loved this, especially after they were scared by the witch show. The pirate made it extra fun for them. I also thought it was great, especially seeing the real pirate treasure. My youngest son bought something in the gift shop for only $11.99 where you get to dig for some pirate treasure and it was very cool, especially for the reasonable price.
Fun & interesting. Cool artifacts
It was a fun experience to see the cool pirate stuff from on old ship and the pirate character was on spot!
This place was absolutely amazing! Captain Johnny Depths was fantastic—you can tell he genuinely loves what he does and is incredibly knowledgeable. The exhibits were fascinating, and seeing authentic pirate artifacts and real pirate treasure was such a unique experience. If you're visiting the area, this is definitely a must-see attraction. Highly recommend—10/10! 🏴☠️✨
We found this to be a fascinating museum. It's specific to one ship wreck and the associated captain and crew, but very detailed. There are numerous actual artifacts that were recovered and well as some cast replicas. You got to learn about the various crew mates, life on the ocean in general, a pirate's way of life, etc. as you went through. At the end you get a satisfying update on how each of the pirates fared after this particular excursion. Highly recommend a visit.
Take your time to read and see all of the displays. Gives you a better understanding of the pirate life
We took our 7-year-old son here for an educational outing, and he thoroughly enjoyed himself, asking numerous questions. Despite its small size, the museum is suitable for both adults and children. We were captivated by the pictures and artifacts which then prompted some good discussions!
Great orientation built into first entering the exhibit area. The exhibits themselves were informative and well labeled. There is one interactive exhibit for tying knots that was fun to try out. Part of the museum is built like a ship you walkthrough which is pretty cool. It took us about 2 hours to walk through the museum as adults reading everything.
Well done exhibits with nice displays and historical references. Nice to learn about continuous efforts to retrieve more artifacts.
I spent way way too much time in there by myself. I’m a museum curator and I was so impressed by how much care was put into displaying the story historically and accurately and the detail provided in the exhibits themselves. I am so impressed and I now want to learn EVERYTHING about pirates. Definitely worth the money. Cap’n Johnny Depths was also a blast, very good at his job.
This is a gem of a museum even if you aren't into pirates. Interesting exhibits with real pirate treasure. We had a great time checking out the things they recovered from the ocean floor.
Great information about real pirates. They have a lot of knowledge and history. Loved the entire place. Would definitely recommend!
Wow, from a pirate fanatic this was one of my favorite Salem 2025 experiences. Definitely coming back next year! -Sean Lane
Had a lot of fun! The crew that works here happily walked us through the museum and gave us a whole story not only of the artifacts but also of how the museum was established. It was an amazing time and I thank the entire crew for being amazing as well! :D
Had the absolute best time! Learned so much and had a great tour guide. Cannot recommend coming here enough! :) good mix of history and fun!
There’s a lot of interesting historical information. It was a lot of fun, and honestly one of the best tours we had while in Salem.
Really enjoyed learning about the Maritime, the piracy, and Sam Bellamy. If you like pirates this is a must see! You can go at your own pace.
We didn’t know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. All the history and artifacts blew our mind away! We had the pleasure of speaking with the owner and she definitely made the experience that much better. The knowledge she possesses and devotion to her work is incredible. The picture spots were also a nice touch. And the discovery lab is pretty cool! Thanks for sharing with us. We will be happy to spread the word!
Hands down one of the best museum visits we’ve experienced. There were endless artifacts recovered from the sunken ship Whydah. Loads of great information. We stayed for about 45 minutes because we had another prearranged plan. You could really take longer if you wanted to. Lots to see and read!
Wonderful experience. Great story. Would definitely recommend. Love history and love learning about pirates I didn’t know about
Very interesting tale of how piracy was born out of adventure, desperation, and greed, as told thru the treasures captured by one pirate and his merry crew until bad weather claimed them, their ship and treasure, Comfortable self guided journey thru the museum Many interesting artifacts to see and learn about.
The history of a real sunken pirate ship and the man who discovered it 300 years later. It’s fascinating with just enough special effects and hands on activities to keep your tweens interested. I wanted to read every placard! And I really loved that they acknowledged so much about the inequities of society, explaining why it made sense for some to choose a life of piracy.
The museum was very well maintained and the staff was excellent. The layout was good with lots of information pertaining to the Whydah. The fact I got to touch actual pirate treasure was pretty awesome to me. There is a lot of reading of information, so don't expect little kids to want to get the most out of a visit here.
Very educational loved it my son picked this as one of the places he wanted to see and so glad he did. If come you must put on the list to see
Excellent exhibit, informative and well curated. My 11 year old son and I loved it and learned a lot. Highly recommend it.
Very entertaining and educational! Chris was very knowledgeable and fun to talk and learn so much of an incredible part of history! Great for kids, Adults, and Family’s! A must see in Salem!
Awesome experience! The entire exhibit is amazing and easy to follow as you encounter real cannons and artifacts! Highly recommend this tour if you enjoy the pirate life or if you want a break from the “witch” factor of Salem. HUGE shoutout to Jason and Braden! You guys helped make my nephew’s day by take a photo with my sister to prove pirates exist! Can’t thank you enough!
A charming break from all the witchy-ness of Salem, this experience was made by the incredible staff, one of which serenaded us with beautiful medieval sounding music as we waited a few minutes for our tour to begin. We went during the week, so crowds were non-existant. we had a very nice quiet walk through Salem's Pirate history. I especially liked the last room, showing items being removed from their sandy sea casts and going through the restoration process.
Interesting museum showcasing real and replica artifacts from a pirate ship wrecked off Cape Cod. It is well presented, educational and not overly touristy. It tells the story of the Whyddah, Samual Bellamy and his crew with lots of good visuals. Although you can book a tour we had purchased general admission tickets to enable us to be flexible in our timing and there were a number of people around to give additional information if needed.
We were looking for something a little different to do in Salem, and after reading the reviews, we planned a visit. If you're into pirate history, this is a great place to explore. It has authentic pirate loot on display, along with its fascinating history. Towards the end of the tour, they demonstrate how items are recovered and cleaned from the ocean floor. The staff is knowledgeable and truly passionate about their jobs. There is a small gift shop at the end that offers reasonably priced items. Take the time to read the information on display, and be sure to look up as you journey through pirate history. There’s a nice surprise for all shark fans! This is a real review. P.S. Don’t forget to come up with a pirate name for yourself as you go back in time. I was Anne Bonny for the day, one of the best women pirates of her time! Enjoy! Argh!
This is a cute, museum. I feel it was the perfect length for a museum and had so much history and facts along the way. I loved seeing the actual recovered pieces. The gift shop was very cute too.
If you need a break from everything witchy this is a nice diversion, liked seeing the actual artifacts that were recovered from shipwreck
Absolutely amazing from start to finish. The exhibitions were very detailed with brilliant sound effects.
Very interesting. Lots of reading if you don't take the guided tour. The pirate guide in the beginning was fun.
Absolutely loved it. I am a huge fan of pirates 🏴☠️ and it was great to know that his museum has the only treasure ever recorded and is displayed. The artifacts were interesting to see as well as the history!! Definitely worth it
