Route

Marrakech, Ait Benhaddou, Boumalne Du Dades, Merzouga, Marrakech

Southern Morocco unfolds slowly on this eleven-night journey — a deliberate, unhurried route from the ochre alleys of Marrakech to the star-scattered silence of the Sahara. Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the legendary Tizi n'Tichka Pass, wander the fortified walls of Aït Benhaddou, and trace the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through valleys carved deep into red rock. Wake to sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes after two full nights in a luxury desert camp, then return to Marrakech's gardens, souks, and rooftop terraces for a fitting farewell. With every stop built around at least two nights, this is Morocco explored in depth rather than glimpsed in passing — time to properly settle into each kasbah, oasis, and dune camp along the way.

Later, head to the vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, where storytellers, snake charmers, and sizzling food stalls bring the city to life. Enjoy dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the square as the city glows in lantern light. The scents of spices, the rhythm of drums, and the colors of the souks set the tone for your journey through Southern Morocco.

Day 2: Marrakech — Gardens and Grandeur

Spend a full day discovering Marrakech's cultural riches at your own pace. Visit the serene Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, then wander the ornate chambers of Bahia Palace and the storied Saadian Tombs. Break for lunch in the Medina before diving into the souks, where leather, ceramics, and textiles spill from every doorway. In the afternoon, unwind with a traditional hammam ritual. Dine at a candlelit riad courtyard this evening, savoring slow-cooked Moroccan classics.

Day

Day 3: Ourika Valley Day Trip

This morning, drive into the foothills of the High Atlas to the Ourika Valley, a green ribbon of Berber villages, walnut groves, and rushing mountain water just outside Marrakech. Stop at a local argan oil cooperative to see the traditional pressing process, then continue toward Setti Fatma for a gentle walk along the seven waterfalls trail. Enjoy a riverside lunch at a Berber-run terrace café before returning to Marrakech in the late afternoon, with the evening free to revisit favorite corners of the Medina before tomorrow's departure south.

Day
4

Day 4: Over the High Atlas to Aït Benhaddou

Leave the city behind and travel through the winding Tizi n'Tichka Pass in the High Atlas Mountains, a breathtaking drive of peaks and valleys. Stop at small Berber villages for tea and local crafts. Continue to Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar famed for its earthen architecture and film appearances in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Explore the labyrinthine alleys and climb to the top for panoramic views of the desert plains before checking into your riad in the area, where the kasbah glows gold at sunset.

Day
5

Day 5: Ouarzazate and the Skoura Oasis

With your base unchanged, spend the day exploring outward. Visit Ouarzazate, the "Gateway to the Sahara," touring Taourirt Kasbah, once home to the Glaoui family, and the Atlas Film Studios. Continue to the Skoura Oasis, a lush palm grove dotted with mudbrick kasbahs and pomegranate trees, and visit Kasbah Amridil, one of Morocco's best-preserved fortresses. Return to your riad near Aït Benhaddou for a second night, with dinner featuring local produce and a quiet evening among the palms.

Day
6

Day 6: The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to Dades Valley

Travel east along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing palm-filled valleys and Berber villages. Stop in El Kelaa M'Gouna, famous for its rose fields and fragrant products, before continuing into the dramatic Dades Valley. Marvel at the red rock formations and winding roads that carve through the gorge, pausing at viewpoints where the cliffs fold into impossible shapes. Check into your kasbah-style hotel in the early afternoon, with dinner on the terrace as sunset paints the cliffs in fiery hues.

Day
7

Day 7: Todra Gorge Excursion

This morning, drive onward to Todra Gorge, a spectacular canyon where towering limestone walls rise nearly 1,000 feet on either side of a narrow river. Walk the gorge floor beneath its sheer rock faces, watch local climbers scale the canyon walls, and browse Berber stalls tucked along the roadside. For the more active, a guided half-day trek into the surrounding hills reveals views back down over the gorge. Return to your Dades Valley hotel for a second night, the rock faces catching their last light as you arrive.

Day
8

Day 8: Into the Sahara — Merzouga

Depart Dades Valley and continue deeper into Morocco's desert landscapes, passing through Erfoud and Rissani, ancient trading posts on the edge of the Sahara. Arrive in Merzouga, where the golden Erg Chebbi dunes stretch endlessly to the horizon. Ride camels across the dunes as the sun sets, painting the desert in shades of orange and crimson. Tonight, stay at a luxury desert camp, dine under the stars, and listen to the rhythm of Berber drums beside a crackling fire.

Day

Day 9: Sahara at Leisure — Dunes and Nomadic Life

Wake early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, an experience of pure magic, then return to camp for a relaxed breakfast. Spend the morning on a 4x4 excursion deeper into the Erg Chebbi dunes, visiting a nomadic family for traditional tea and conversation about desert life. In the afternoon, rest at camp or try a session of sandboarding down the dunes. As night falls, gather again around the fire for music and stargazing beneath an unfiltered desert sky, for a second night among the dunes.

Day

Day 10: Sahara to Marrakech via the Draa Valley

Depart Merzouga and journey west, passing ancient kasbahs, desert plateaus, and endless palm groves along the way. Stop in Tamegroute to visit its historic library and green pottery workshops, a centuries-old tradition, then continue through the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river oasis, with a lunch stop among the palm groves near Agdz. Cross back through Ouarzazate for a final photo stop before continuing over the High Atlas to Marrakech, arriving by evening to check into your riad for two final nights.
