Greater Male Explorer - Private City Tour By Car Or By Walking

This tour was exactly what we wanted for our last afternoon before departing on an evening flight. We were met promptly upon our Resorts speedboat arrival at the Velana boat jetty. We had only a few hours before a mid afternoon appointment. We stored our luggage the driver which was an added convenience. The weather was rainy so we upgraded to a driving tour and saw a good deal of both Malé and Hulhumale. Mahmood was also very kind to deliver us promptly to our afternoon massage, wait for us and bring us to the departures terminal. Our final afternoon was informative, relaxing and stress-free. We highly recommend this tour and send a huge thanks to Mahmood.

Our tour with Mahmood was a fantastic way to cap off our visit to The Maldives. He only does one tour per day, so your tour is completely tailored to you, including start time and duration. He communicated with us via Whatsapp as soon as we we booked, and answered all questions. In Male he met us at the airport, helped us store our luggage, and off we went. He kept track of time to me sure to get us back to the airport in time for our flight, but we never felt rushed. We asked him to recommend a restaurant, which he then included as the last stop in our tour. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.

We booked this tour last minute and Mahmood got in touch with us fast to coordinate details. We went all over + some! He has so many facts and tidbits. We really felt like we got to see the whole island plus surrounding islands too. He showed us lots of "then" and "now" pictures on his phone which were neat to see. He had all the highlights on a tour but not a set tour so it didn't feel scripted. He catered it to our walking level (8,000+ steps) and provided all transportation when we needed it. Highly recommend him if you are on Malè!! There is a reason he has five stars!!

I had a really lovely experience with my Mahmoud. Despite the unpredictable weather, he was flexible and always gave me different options so I could still enjoy the day. He was kind, friendly and made me feel very comfortable as a female solo traveller. He even took some great photos for me and showed me hidden gems that weren’t part of the itinerary. He really made the experience special and actually made me want to come back to the Maldives and stay much longer!

We arrived in Male on a cruise ship and were met at the tender wharf by our guide Mahmood. He picked us up in a private car and drove along the port road to find a car park and eventually parked in front of the National Mosque. We walked through the mosque and adjoining park and then walked through the main Market. We continued a drive past several government buildings and some of the oldest buildings in Male. We visited a man-made beach on the eastern side of Male before travelling over the bridge to the Airport island, the new airport terminal is the most expensive building project in the Maldives. We then visited a recently constructed housing complex on a large, reclaimed island. Mahmood provided interesting commentary along the way and was very proud of his homeland. It was an interesting tour provided by an enterprising and enthusiastic family man. He told us about the requirements to be a Maldivian citizen and remain one. There were 4 requirements, you must be a Muslim, must speak the local language, be a resident of at least 12 years and clean record and renunciation of any other citizenship

Great tour to explore Male! We have booked this tour to pass time during a longer layover and we really enjoyed it. Mahmoud is a reliable guide with a lot of knowledge. He picked us up at the airport and showed us both Hulhumale and Male. The tour can be shaped as per the guests wishes.

We recently took a tour with Mahmood on our departure day from a Maldives resort island, as we had a night flight that night. It was a great way to pass the day and very insightful, a safe way to see the capital city and show our kids and ourselves Maldivian culture….ie it’s not all fancy resorts. We learned a lot! Mahmood is a great host , very knowledgeable and flexible ( our seaplane time changed a few times due to weather ). Nothing was a hassle. There is also the option to store your luggage in the vehicle which is handier than having to do this at the airport (depending how much luggage you have). We did the Greater Malé Explorer Private City Tour and it ended up being one of the highlights of our entire Maldives trip. Our guide was outstanding, friendly, incredibly knowledgeable, and very flexible. We had a long wait before we were allowed into the airport for our flight home after returning from a resort so decided to check out the city instead of waiting around in the seaport lounge. I'm so glad we went with Mahmood instead being in a boring lounge the entire time. Our seaplane back from the resort was late (as expected) and Mahmood was incredibly patient and flexible in our meetup and communicative over WhatsApp. We booked the private car tour and it was comfortable and easy. As for the actual tour, it's so interesting to see the different areas of Hulhumalé since it's not normally offered by most tours of Malé. Mahmood provided great commentary of the history of the islands as well as the state of the current development. He is a wonderful source of information and happily answered all our questions. The tour is also super customized and you can choose how you want to spend your time (whether that's shopping for souvenirs or trying out the best local fast food). I would highly recommend this tour.

Great walk around Male, very informative. We had a great time walking and chatting about everything Male had to offer. We walked, took the bus and took a ferry to see everything across the 3 main islands. We had a blast and learnt a lot about the history of not just Male but all the Maldives. I would highly recommend.

This is Not the typical AI Resort watching Tour. It is a very interesting Tour with cultural aspects and insight of local behaviors and places. Our Guide Mahmood Ali is very friendly and helpful to understand this beautiful Island. Since we were only 2 persons on this tour we felt like being private guided😉

We had a great time with Mahmood. Not only did he show us the major sites in Male proper, but he took us to two of the nearby islands. We had the opportunity to walk, ride the bus, take a ferry, take a cab and a private car. We saw everything we wanted to see on this tour. Well recommended.

It was a very in-depth tour along with an explanation of the history and government. My driver, Mahmood could not have been nicer. If you do this tour, I would request him if I were you. His car was very comfortable and air-conditioned. I was pretty jetlagged from my flight from Seattle and he actually let me take a nap in his car to recharge a bit before moving on with the tour. The only slight negative was his accent, which sometimes made it difficult to understand what he was saying. He was nice enough to take pictures of me at some of the historical and key locations and sent them to me immediately after we finished.I think the tour was well with the money and would recommend it.

It was a great experience. Private car, experienced Gide cum driver slow drive. We could visit almost all the important sites and learn the background and history. It was a relaxing trip. The air-conditioned neat car helped.

Mahmood was so knowledgeable about the Maldives and explained to us the recent land reclamation and development of new districts. I now wish we had spent more time in Malé, there really is so much to see, do and learn about. Thank you Mahmood!

Mahmood Ali was a terrific tour guide. Though it rained all day he was able to take us to many interesting places. We especially enjoyed learning about the history of Malé and the info about the "reclaimed" Islands made from. Deep water sand.

He was also very communicative & accommodating to our requests & preferences. We were picked up in a very nice air-conditioned car by Mahmood. We were provided with bottle water. Mahmood is the best guide I have had. He took us on 2 hr tour of Male to places we would never have found. Obe of us left a bag in his car and Mahmood promptly got on his bike and rushed back before we caught our speedboat to resort. We wanted some tins of tuna, Maldive fish etc . Onbthe day of our departure he turned up at tge airport at 6am with those items and refused any reimbursement! A wonderful guide and a good friend. We definitely recommend Mahmood when you visit The Maldives. It was so good to meet a genuine local with a passion for his job. Visiting the Saii resort and decided to explore Male for a day! Mahmood was a fantastic tour guide who showed us all the Male districts, gave us interesting facts about the people, culture and history. Mahmood was an excellent tour guide! He was very friendly and accommodating to my wife and I during our visit to Male while returning home from our honeymoon. We decided to do the walking and were enamored in the sights and sounds of the beautiful capital. Mahmood picked us up from the airport and we were on our way to exploring the city. The great thing is, yes, we of course visited popular areas but to start off we ended up taking the ferry boat to Villingili and got to see more of the everyday life of the citizens of Male which was very nice and charming. We then returned to begin the walking portion around Male where we visited sites like the islands tallest building, their hospital. We also visited a couple artificial beaches, their tsunami monument, the fish market, and of course some of the many street markets where Mahmood was extremely kind enough to buy us Maldivian bananas and passion fruit (which my wife loves), the bananas were so sweet! We continued our journey walking through the city streets learning more about the Maldives and its history courtesy of our friend Mahmood who was very knowledgeable and proud of his home 🙂. Throughout the walk we stopped by the many administrative and governmental buildings, the sting ray bay (def stop by!), and the beautiful Islamic Centres / Mosques around the capital, we even got to hear Athan which made it even better! One last thing to note that we really appreciated- my wife and I saw a 1,000 bill/note of Maldivian Rufiyaa during our vacation and had asked if it was possible to exchange some USD to get it as a piece of memorabilia. Many of our resorts employees said it’s very rare to find and they’ve only seen it maybe a couple times, but, you can always count on Mahmood because he was able to retrieve one for us when we were returning to the airport! What an authentic experience of local life! We had some communication issues due to internet issues at the very start of the tour during pick up, apparently never happened before. But Mahmood definitely made up for it. I loved car tour so we could see so much more, the combo of air conditioning and also walking portion was perfect. Mahmood is very knowledgeable of the history and the local sites. The snacks were delicious! Having the car was convenient bc I had an option of keeping my luggage with me instead of hauling it along or holding it at the airport. The pick up to and from the airport was also convenient. The car was clean, he had water for you. He was able to personalize the tour based on your availability. I highly recommend this tour.
