Itinerary
Private open air tour through the only coffee plantation in Europe and up to 30 types of tropical fruits. We will see avocados, mangoes, custard apples, lychees, red bananas, macadamias, pitayas and many more exotic trees. With a bit of luck we will be able to observe wild animals such as chameleons, eagles, partridges, owls, wild goats and wild boars. As a culmination we will be able to visit the most northern coffee plantation in the world and the only one in Europe. During the walk we will share our sustainable agricultural practices, biological balance and the closing of the circle of water and matter. There is a steep slope so it is recommended to avoid the hottest hours of the day, to bring comfortable and closed shoes and to hydrate properly. If you have any allergies to plants or pollen, we recommend that you consult us beforehand.

Manolo’s 48-acre terraced farm is a marvel of persistence and hard work. It was beautiful scenery and lovely to touch each plant, plus I learned so much from his entertaining presentation. I’ll bet you don’t know the part of a fruit you’ve been throwing away that is used to fight parasitic infections. Maybe you don’t know what a baby banana looks like, or that a very common house plant actually bears delicious fruit. (Didn’t know any of that.) At the end, he has frozen fruit drinks and other refreshments. I bought some of his coffee, and that will be the first thing to go in my new grinder when I get back from vacation. I will update after we’ve had a cup!
We have booked for a tour but unfortunately it got "cancelled" last minute as the owners' children got sick and he had to go to hospital - he did let us know in advance about it. I have asked if we can instead stop by to purchase their coffee and wanted my parents badly to see a coffee tree in real life - after all it's hard to come across them anywhere around Europe... and I think this is the "only" place on the mainland EU that grows them. The owner offered that his father will welcome us upon arrival and handle the coffee part. So we did drive to the farm and we got more than just the coffee trees - the father, who were told doesn't speak English, actually spoke some simple English enough and his amazing enthusiasm and positive energy made a very nice experience - he took us around the farm (this is not where they grow the coffee itself, there is a tree here to see but the actual coffee field is located somewhere else that you normally go to visit) and showed us other trees - including to my huge surprise the macadamia nut tree, which the last time I saw in Hawaii - so this was another pleasant unique surprise. He gave us some amazing bananas as well and eventually we got to the "top" area where they have the sampling and sell jams/coffee etc. - this was such a nice surprise after coming here thinking that we are just "picking up" coffee (by the way, a very nice and mild coffee - love the fact it wasn't burnt as otherwise you can't trully appreciate it). A couple tips: TIP #1: if you drive yourself it's easier coming from the "east" as you get of N-340 with a right turn (right by the garbage bins, you can't miss it as that's the only area before the big roundabout you can turn into from the main road) - and then you continue on a pretty narrow road (be careful, barely any cars passing bit it is narrow and lots of curves) until you reach a fairly big curve that has some flat area by it , to park your car, and the gate - it's easy to miss - now that I check google maps it shows correctly as Herradura Coffee & Fruit Farm (again this is the farm, not the coffee fields address) but when we drove it back in July the directions told us we arrived way before this sign.... there is a signage on the gate but when it was open it was easy to miss it from the car - see my picture of the gate TIP #2: the farm itself, not the coffee fields as I can't speak to that, is a super uphill uneven walk, definitely not for people with mobility issues - my dad immediately said he will go back to the car, my mom and I went up the hills with the owner's father and I must say it was an exercise - add July summer heat to it and you definitely want to take it easy :) it is worth it, trust me!
A fun way to see a small family run coffee farm, explore the countryside and learn about agriculture.
We highly recommend this tour of Coffee plantations. An incredible passion for coffee and fruit, passed down from generation to generation. Great, funny and very friendly owner and guide ( Manuel = Batman 😉) who tells the story of the farm in a very hilarious way. An informative and very interesting visit.
amazing experience. good guide
Visited this morning . What an interesting and entertaining tour . Would definitely recommend a visit to this lovely farm with not only coffee but lots of exotic fruits . Manolo is such a good host and made everyone feel so welcome . What a great sense of humour and ability to connect with people . It was a brilliant morning .
Very enjoyable experience, much thanks to the tour guide Manolo.
Manolo is a lovely human and an inspiration for all of us. He is generous and has a lot of knowledge about many topics, not just his farm. It's a great area to visit and learn about the fruits he has been able to grow there. We took our small dog with us, it was a treat for her. She did have some ticks jump on her but we were able to find them. So just pay attention to that.
We did book tour in English today. Showed up at correct time in location that was sent to us with confirmation of reservation. Nobody showed up. We messaged and tried calling via Whatsapp couple of times, but nobody answered.
My main goal was to see the coffee plants, especially since I hadn’t managed to visit any plantations during my travels in Panama or Colombia. Although September isn’t the peak season for coffee spotting, you can still see some beans and a few blossoms, which already made the experience worthwhile. One of the highlights was hearing the farm owner Manolo’s story about establishing the farm, which originally began as a monoculture of chirimoyas, but today it displays an incredible variety of tropical fruits, some of which you’d never expect to grow in Europe! Equally fascinating was learning about the weather conditions that define La Herradura’s microclimate, making it a unique place for cultivating such exotic plants in Europe. The tour began at the first plot, located right next to the meeting point, and then continued by car to the second plot. If you're arriving by bus from La Herradura, it’s best to coordinate with Manolo in advance, as transportation is needed between the two locations. The coffee I purchased from the farm is not only rare, being grown and produced in Spain, but it is also flavorful. I highly recommend this tour to anyone exploring southern Andalusia and looking for a unique experience. The whole tour took around 90 minutes.
Well worth a visit, Manuel is a great story teller, very informative and funny. The best mango we have ever tasted 💞 looking forward to trying his coffee when we get back home from our trip 😎
What a great experience! My two children learned so much today about coffee, but also now love mango, lychee and avocado because they had the unique experience of eating them from the plant. We bought some amazing coffee at the end. Manolo Mateus speaks at least 5 languages and entertained us all the way round. I can’t believe this tour cost so little! If arriving by taxi, let him know in advance so he can meet you to bring you up the hill. There is no Uber service for return so you need to organise a lift to the main town or book a local taxi. You could also make a day of visiting beach towns La Herrera or Almuñécar.
Manolo’s recount of his family history and how the farm came to be was so interesting. He added a gentle humour which all ages appreciated too . You can see and smell amazing results of his hard work and the farm is such a joy to walk through . A morning to awaken the senses and a well worth trip to do .
It was a beautiful tour and a very unique experience. We went in a large group, but it was still at personal and wonderful experience. Anyone visiting the area should give themselves this experience. Remember to buy some of the beautiful produce at the end of the tour.
This was so much better than we expected. It is not that we had low expectations, it’s more that the tour guide was so funny and Interesting and generous and he could’ve actually been a stand-up comedian. His story is so compelling with his family, and his warmth shown through his stories. Plus, we love supporting local farms, and even have a CSA (community supported agriculture) here where we live, and we pick up a box of farm goodness every week. This was so special. My only comment is that we should have done it earlier in the week, as this would have been a delightful way to buy local avocados etc., and then enjoy them at the beginning of our trip, rather than at the end. We would’ve bought more! We also were able to take home some very special products, including the coffee. What a delightful way to spend a morning!
We would highly recommend this tour. Manuel was informative, passionate and even humorous about his farm. The taxi we booked didn't appear and he even arranged a taxi to pick us up. Thank you Manuel.
Fabulous tour. Manolo is interesting, funny, passionate and very informative about his work and vision. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
pleasant and not to heavy tour, smiles and sunshine, different ages and most of us made mistakes guessing how many how old the trees and fruits were.
Very passionated owner! He told the history of his farm in clear English in an enthusiastic and humorous way. At the end of the tour you can taste some tropical fruit and buy his coffee.
What a great, insightful experience. Manolo is passionate about his farm and the fruits and coffee he grows. He explained the processes in an interesting but fun way which was enjoyed by all in the group. We were able to sample some of the fruits during the tour and some products were available to buy but with no pressure. A thoroughly enjoyable trip, highly recommend!
Incredible! Learnt so much about fruit trees and how if you have a dream and your vision is big enough anything can happen. So so interesting and Manolo is very passionate about his vision and the environment. A must-do
The views were incredible! We learned much about what goes into harvesting fruits and making good coffee! Highly recommend!
Our group of five had an outstanding experience visiting this coffee / fruit plantation in La Herradura. Manuel owns the farm which has been part of family for generations; he provides the tour. The tour is a wonderful walk thru his property amongst fruit trees (banana/avocado/mango/kumquat) and coffee plants. Great story telling about the history of the land and his entertaining journey in planning his business. The 90+ minute tour is interesting, educational and just fun. We drove to the farm; its an easy drive. Manuel provided a few of his avocado's for us which we enjoyed that evening as part of dinner. Great experience - don't hesitate giving it a chance. As a bonus, the farm is very close to the terrific La Herradura beach with plenty of options for a beverage and snack in a beautiful setting.
Very interesting to see and hear about farming in south Spain. The guide is very educatet and entertaining, and we had a good time visiting the farm. If you need to take a taxi to the farm, maybe a good idé to send him a message and ask him to book the taxi, because a little problem for the taxi driver. Highly recomended 👍
We had a great 90 minutes being shown round Manuel's finca which cultivates a wide range of tropical fruits and coffee. He is a great racconteur, with lots of relevant detail and family anecdote. At the end of the tour you can buy some if the finca's produce. We're enjoying the Aguacate honey! PS it's a 40 minute walk up the hill from La Herradura. An easier walk back down.
Manuel was an amazing guide, he took the time to go through the various fruits and coffee he is growing and answered a ton of our questions! He's funny, personable and says 'text me anytime you have a question!" We talked about what we grow in Canada and if we could one day work on his farm.... Good luck Manuel! I hope to buy your coffee in Canada one day, but if not, I'll take the banana rum, avocado honey and anything else you are willing to give us ;) Elle and Joe
This tour was a highlight and a very interesting insight in farming fruits and coffee. Absolutely worth every euro. Great guide in both English and German.
The tour was great, it was fun to see a farmer pushing the limets on what tropical fruits can be grown in Spain.. My wife and I both really enjoyed the tour of the coffee farm and loved getting to see all the other tropical fruits.
This was such a fun and informative tour! We learned a lot about how the coffee plantation came to exist, the history of the land, and lots about the wondrous variety of tropical fruit grown there. The challenges of managing a tropical fruit farm in an ecologically responsible way are immense, and I have a lot of respect for what is being done here. We bought some fruit from the farm at the end of the tour and it was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this tour :)
Manuel is an engaging host who is informative and engaging about the story of his farm. Highly recommended. It is also nice to get different view of the Almuñécar area.
Manuel’s fantastic coffee farm in La Herradura is certainly worth a visit! My son and I spent a wonderful (and hot) couple of hours on a guided tour. We learned a lot about fruit and coffee farming, and we are looking forward to trying the coffee at home 🫶🏽 A huge recommendation to Manuel from two Danes on Summer holiday ☀️
Manuel was an excellent host. Interesting talk and tour. Clearly passionate about what he does. Would highly recommend this and a great way to support local businesses.
This was a really good way to learn more about the local area and agriculture in a fun and immersive way! Manolo is a engaging and entertaining tour guide who provided us with a great experience without the usual tourist traps
Such a unique experience, highly recommend. We were engaged throughout and our guide was so knowledgeable and passionate about all the crops. Coffee beans, fruit and jams were all available for purchase at the end. (Maybe not for young kids as little walk was required)
This was an amazing experience! Thank you so much to Manolo for a lovely afternoon. The farm is amazing and we were taught so much. Manolo was so kind and generous, the tour was engaging and funny! We were given water and he spoke many languages very well and was happy to translate so many of us in the tour could enjoy. Couldn’t have been better!
A really interesting tour by Manuel, who is passionate about his farm and curious to try and grow crops that some think will not succeed, however he proves them wrong. Would highly recommend visiting and supporting this organic farm, however make sure you take walking shoes, can walk up hill, water and a hat.
Lovely trip. We learned a lot about coffee along with amazing family story. We will enjoy our morning coffee so much more after this trip with appreciation.
Super experience for a change of spending the days on the beach! Manolo is very talkative and knowledgable guide who knows the region and plants. The more exotic more interesting for him. So he managed to grove coffe beside mango, avokado, sugar apples, sugar čane, pittaya, lemon fingers....the walk was easy and relaxing as there is a lot od shadow. And at the end we had a prvilage to taste some fruits and buy coffe which is for sale only at the finca along with some other biological products from the region (jams, rum, tropical fruits....
Very unique experience, a warm and heartful tour at not only the life of the farm and family enheritance, but Manuel’s own do’s and dont’s with the different fruits, the coffee plants and the difficulties to go againts all odds, DO IT!
It was amazing, Manuel was a great guide and his story is very inspiring and hopeful. I loved every minute of it!
We booked this guide as a private guide. But it was not a private tour, a number of other people participated. This meant that the guidance could not be adapted to our children. I had requested that we should have fruit tasting after the tour but it was not available. It also said that you could buy fruit with a 15% discount. But there was no fruit to buy. However, the tour was interesting for adults.
Charming fruit farm with Manuel's personal stories adding a very unique touch. We learned surprising facts about fruits and coffee which made this unexpectedly more entertaining :-) We hope more people will come here and support this wonderful place and Manuel's family that rebuilt this farm with modern sustainable ideas. We had a great time. A visit you won't want to miss :-)
Most amazing experience ever. Totally fantastic. I learned a great deal. Manolo is a excellent guide 👏👏👏
Fantastic tour, Manuel was excellent in every way. All very interesting, hearing about the place and history and what he has planned.
There are so many kinds of tropical fruits that are grown at the farm. We got a very interesting insite information about each kind and how to grow fruits ecologically. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone.
Manolo was a very friendly and multilingual tour guide. The farm was beautiful and vibrant with many varieties of exotic fruits. This was the highlight of our trip to La Herradura. We even got to see a bit of wild life at the end as he spotted a chameleon on the way back to town. Definitely worth a visit!
We were given clear directions to find the place, the tour was informative and interesting. Thank you for your efforts.
Wanted to try this with some friends. Got tasted 3 bottles from local supermarket. Was expecting more. Really disappointed.
Tried the wine tasting. Tasted 3 wines brought from local supermarket in the backyard of the farm. Paid 100 eur- price for the wines in the supermarket was 20 eur. Rip off.
