A lovely hike from a knowledgeable guide! It was a great way to see a lesser-known village and hike. The hike itself was primarily flat with a few steep areas. We were out of breath a couple times, but it by no means requires lots of athleticism. The perfect way to see some beautiful views while getting some activity in.

Itinerary
I will pick you up in Malaga city center with the van and we will go to the white village. Once there, we will start the hike visiting the white village first and then taking the arab irrigation canal until the gorge of the almanchares river, in the heart of the Natural Park (2h30). Along the path we will interpretate the landscape of the Natural Park of Sierra Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara: its geology, the animals, plants...We'll stop at the most beautiful view points to take pictures. Once in the river, we will do a picnic and we will take a bath in the crystalline water of the river (not in winter). In the way back (1h), it´s very likely to cross wild goats in the Natural Park and we will enjoy the sunset in the mountains. Perfect hike to do an inmersion in the countryside and to understand the real Malaga.

Alfonso was a great guide and the small group experience made it all the nicer. Easy to find the meeting spot. Worth the money.
Amazing trip! Best choice if you want to spend day in nature surrounded by amazing views. Recommend 100%!
This was one of my favourite hikes ever! Loved visiting the village, the farm, and the local people! Alphonso was the best guide..so knowledgeable and just the right pace! The views and the countryside are breathtaking.
We left it was raining. It continued to rain. The streets were like rivers. Get to the top of the town and then cancels. Should have canceled before it started. Cost me 30 euros by taxi just to the meeting point. I wish it was sunny so no idea if it was good or bad hike.
This was a great vacation experience! I was part of a small group including hikers from Romania and Brazil. We had wonderful conversations, learning about each other and our countries—an unexpected bonus! We hiked up through a white city with Alphonso providing the history of the area and its agriculture. We then followed the path of an ancient aqueduct back into the mountains. Alphonso was knowledgeable of the flora, fauna and geology. It was a great hike to a mountain waterfall and swimming hole, where a picnic was provided. I highly recommend this hike and any other by Malaga Activa!
This was a fantastic tour in every way! Alfonso was knowledgeable of the history, geology, flora and fauna of the area. From walking through the white city to hiking up the canyon, the scenery was breathtaking. Alfonso introduced us to wild herbs and mountain goats, wHike tending the needs of the each in the group. We had a very international group, which was in itself a rich experience to share stories and get to know one another while on our trek. I highly recommend all of Malaga Activa’s tours snd look forward to returning for another. Becky
We booked the El Saltillo trip for a friends birthday (3 of us) as a surprise. The trip was cancelled with <24 hours notice (after we had to message the host to see if it was running), due to not having the minimum number of people (6), there was no mention of this being a possibility on the website. One star for a prompt refund being given but very disappointed given the lack of communication and the stress this has caused with having to replan with such little notice.
What a spectacular place to visit! The views are breathtaking & the hike into the canyon is brilliant. We were kept informed about the area & history from our guide. Some parts are a little bit scary if you suffer from vertigo but our guide was very patient & gave clear advice throughout. This is an amazing hike.
It is difficult to choose a favorite part. The hike was well-chosen. The views were spectacular! And Alfonso was a very knowledgeable guide, and extremely helpful and friendly. The stop at the local pub was very charming! I highly recommend this experience. This was all pre-covid so I can not comment on the covid measures.
I visited my sister in Malaga and we decided to do this tour together. We were a small group with other really friendly people. The hike had the perfect length and Alfonso was a super friendly guide who organized everything pretty well. He can tell you a lot about the region and is also in touch with the local people there. Our highlight was the swimming in the waterfall pool. I would recommend this tour to everyone, it was beyond perfect! Greetings, Julia & Vanessa
A fantastic hike in a beautiful location. Alfonso was a great guide, friendly, incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, his passion for the area is clear. We hope to complete more of his hikes in future.
If you are interested in a nice hike in beautiful environment this is a must do. Alfonso made us feel comfortable; could tell us a lot about the scenery. and at the stop you have an opportunity to have a dip in lovely cool water. I wouldn't miss this when you are in Malaga. A nice hike, not to demanding; well organised.
As a solo traveller who really wanted to go hiking, I couldn't have made a better choice of tour. The location felt quite unique, nothing I would have randomly found on my own, the guide Alfonso made the small group feel welcome and at ease with each other within minutes of saying our first hello. Easy, friendly, informative and such amazing scenery made this hike a very special day to remember. If you are considering this tour, please don't hesitate, just book - you will have no regrets!
Alfonso’s attention to detail and the stories he shared with us made for an unforgettable experience in this beautiful area.
We were lucky to do 2 tours with Alfonso- this one and El Torcal; both of which we would fully recommend and a highlight of our short winter break to Malaga. The views were stunning and both walks had contrasting scenery that took our breath away. Alfonso was friendly and led the walk at a comfortable pace for the whole group, taking time to point out interesting facts, the highlight of the Saltillo Gorge was the sunset on the way back. The walk itself was ~5.5 miles, with 1042ft of elevation; which is very accessible to anyone with moderate levels of fitness.
Wonderful trip, beautiful scenery, great guide. Nothing to fault, definitely best day of my holiday. I was a solo traveller to Málaga, and so glad I went to this excursion- not only I had a fantastic time, I also made friends from the group. We ended up going for dinner after and even met up the next day. I don’t want to repeat what others have already described, but can second that it’s a well organised, first class experiment. I’m hoping to be able to visit soon again with my children and do this excursion again together with them.
I very much agree with all the other reviews - this is a really worthwhile hike and day trip to go on. It takes you away from the bustle of the city and well-worn tourist trails into a quiet, breathtaking little world of its own. Alfonso is knowledgeable, kind and experienced, and very interesting to talk to. The village, landscape and views are stunning. The weather in November was mild and sunny but it’s worth bringing an extra layer for the altitude.
One of the best travel experiences we've ever had. Alfonso picked us up in the center and with a small group we drove to the mountains outside of Malaga. There we climed via a beautiful route to a waterfall in the mountains. We visited the white village (beautiful), saw mountain goats, avocado and olive trees and learned a lot about the flora and fauna. Alfonso prepared a little picknick at the top, which was very much appreciated. When the sun was setting, we climbed back down. The view was breathtaking, and Alfonso helped us all with the more difficult parts in the route. From my experience, you should be fit and have a bit of stamina if you want to join this tour. I am afraid of hights, but it was doable and still an amazing experience.
What a fantastic hike through the gorge. You do not need to be a hiking master to enjoy these gorgeous views. This was by far the best thing we did while in Malaga. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Such a wonderful experience - don't miss it!
An easy, stress-free day. Lovely walk in the hills, not at all strenuous. Great views. Easy pick-up and drop-off in central Malaga. Alfonso was good company and professional throughout. Recommended if you want to get out of the city and experience some of the glorious countryside.
This was a wonderful experience! One of the highlights of our trip. My roommate and I took our first trip together, and we both wanted to try an out of the city trip. Hiking was doable for both of us. We live in NYC and don't hike often, but are both physically active (yoga, rowing, dance, cardio). The visit to the village was alone worth it, but it was a special treat to go visit the waterfall. Got a lot of great information about the history of the area along the way and saw some goats! Highly recommend.
easy walk to arrange, pick up on time in central Malaga. Nice relaxing walk in the hills and not too stressful with great views. Would recommend
We did a tour of the Pueblo blancos and hiked the Saltillo Gorge in January 2020. It was such a lovely time very much because of Alfonso and his familiarity, respect and pride in the local Spanish treasures. This was a casually paced, stress free day from start to finish. The prearranged pickup went smoothly, Alfonso was a great conversationalist and gave individual attention to all members of the group. His driving was excellent as well. His guiding was relaxed and well paced and his information was interesting. We all enjoyed the nice picnic lunch he provided at a very natural peaceful location. All said very worth the price to be placed in his capable hands for the afternoon.
After two hiking trails in Granada, this was the first through Malaga. He may not have the renown of the King's Little Way, but there is nothing to envy him. The town of Canillas has the charm of that town that seems to have stopped in time, the journey is affordable for everyone (and that a server is not a great sportsman and some vertigo I have) and the icing on the cake is the river, where we had a small picnic. Alfonso, our guide, more than proved that he is an experienced and very communicative guide. I would recommend the experience without hesitation.
Very nice hike, rather easy, starting from a very pretty typical village, then crossing a nature reserve and taking a cliffside walkway to reach the source of the stream. Alfonso knows how to captivate his audience and involve pre-teens, very well!
