It was nice to be able to tour the city in the comfort of my own car. Download the app and just drive!

Itinerary
The Maine Medical Center is home of the Barbara Bush Children’s Wing. Mrs. Bush, the wife of our 41st president and the mother of the 43rd president, she lived much of her life in Kennebunkport, Maine, 30 miles south of Portland. She passed away in 2018. Mrs. Bush did so much great work raising money for treatment of kids with terrible illnesses, and her legacy is remembered in the Children’s wing of the Maine Medical Center. Note: The tour is over 12 miles long, with more than 33 audio stories, and takes about 1-2 hours to complete. New, Lifetime access, no expiry. Use it anytime, on any trip, as many times as you want.
This is the Victoria Mansion. Built by Ruggles Morse in 1858. “the best standing example of Victorian art, architecture and decoration.” He named it “Victoria Mansion” after Britain’s Queen Victoria, It was built as his summer home.
On the left-hand side, see the colorful brick rowhouses. These were built originally for the servant class, these rowhouses are now very nice… expensive condominiums. After all those fires, brick was used from that point on throughout the city, not a lot of wood.
Portland’s Harbor (the body of water that you just sailed in on) is a “deep water” port, it generally does not freeze over during the winters. the Gulf of Maine has very strong tides, and those tides mix the water column and bring deeper, warmer water to the surface all along the coast.
On the right side of the coach we’ll pass the home of Neal Dow. A former Portland mayor, Neal Dow is known as the father of the American Prohibition. In 1851, then Mayor Dow pushed through a statewide prohibition-- banning the sale and consumption of intoxicating beverages--that became the model for the National Prohibition.
This is the “Portland’s Arts District”. The area has many independent art galleries, working studios, Coffee houses and restaurants. Up ahead, on the right, is the Portland Art Museum.
Just past the non-descript building on the right—the gray/brown Maine Historical Society headquarters—is the Wadsworth Longfellow House. It’s the brick building set a little back from the road, on the left. This is the house where the poet grew up. Built after the Revolutionary War by Peleg Wadsworth, a Revolutionary War General and the grandfather of Henry Longfellow, it’s the oldest brick house in Portland.
On our left side is the 1st Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. This is the oldest church in Portland. The building is the second building that has housed this congregation.
On the left is Portland’s City Hall, a beautiful building for a small city. This is the third City Hall building on this site. The first two building were destroyed by fire
The tall brick and concrete building to your left is the Franklin Tower, built in the 1970s. It’s the tallest building in the state of Maine at 16 stories.
Here’s Portland’s Eastern Cemetery, it’s the oldest cemetery in the City of Portland Some Head Stones date back to 1768. The oldest markers were wooden, and they were lost to the fires.
Let’s go back to the 1800’s, during that time, ships entering Portland Harbor could not be seen from the docks until they rounded the point of land at Spring Point Ledge and were almost in the harbor.
Notice that there are several examples of the “flattop triple-decker” this tenement housing style, which is very typical here in New England, were built in the 1880s to the 1920s.
Off to the right is Portland Harbor. Part of Casco Bay, an inlet on the Southern Coast of the Gulf of Maine, the City of Portland sits along its southern edge and the Port of Portland lies within.
If you look over your right shoulder, see the land mass with the oil tanks. That's the City of South Portland.
The Eastern Promenade is a great space where Portlanders get out and enjoy the nice weather and the sea breezes, at the foot of the Eastern Prom is a little beach called the East End Beach.
After the British destroyed city in 1775, Portland’s city leaders decided that they need to build a fort. The green space on the right is the result of that decision.
You'll remember earlier we spoke about the streets in Old Portland, how they were named due to their proximity to the water. They are Fore St, Middle St and Back St.
Continuing our drive here in Portland, we will make our way to the Casco Bay Bridge. The Bridge spans Casco Bay and connects the City of Portland with the City of South Portland.
While we make our way through the City of South Portland we approach Meetinghouse Hill. Meetinghouse Hill is a kind of quintessential New England scene with the cemetery on the left and the Civil War statue on the right and a beautiful church behind the Civil War statue.
We’re now entering Fort Williams Park. You’ll notice several military installations here in the park

This was informative and easy to follow, perfect plan for a rainy day. We made a wrong turn but it directed us back on track and audio was great
Its difficult to log in and operate especially if you're trying to drive and operate it. I would not do it again.
Late on the navigation and super confusing. Not a ton of information, and often he started talking about something we had just passed, so we didn't see it.
Excellent!! Highly recommend it!
Great option for a rainy day in Portland. Explanations are interesting, not too short, not too long. The app works as a map and the speaker gives you clear instructions while driving. Good job!
Great narrator and very easy to follow. when you want to my little history, great way to do it at a very low price..
Good & easy but a little tricky making all the turns.
The audio really aided our trip by helping us ensure we saw all the highlights of the area. We went to areas within the city that we would not have known about
Directions were hard to follow. Traffic didn’t allow us to stop for the whole voice messages
Our experience was genuinely helpful and interesting. We enjoyed it very much!
The app worked well. We downloaded it at our hotel to make sure we were on WiFi, as directed. The audio guide worked well. It would be nice if it connected with our gps so we could use the car map but the phone map worked fine.
It would be nice that when you get turned around if it could locate you and direct you better
Great overview tour. The app used for this tour has issues. It was a bit glitchy. Audio would end mid-sentence. Also would be nice if the map interfaced with apple car play so we could see the map on our screen instead of the tiny phone screen. It was a bargain way to see and learn a lot about Portland and I would recommend it.
It was good. We were able to see parts of Maine without spending a lot of money and on our own time. Would recommend.
We appreciated the tour points of interest and historical value. The technical difficulties, despite doing what was suggested ahead of time and downloading everything prior to, is the reason for the rating. The app repeatedly closed and had a delay resulting in missed turns and directional mishaps. Thankfully, my husband is very direction-savvy and got us right back on track but it happened multiple times.
Overall good tour, we discovered areas of Portland that we otherwise wouldn’t have found. Minor technical glitches, and would have been nice to have more narration/information during the drive but overall very enjoyable and easy.
Although the app was quite informative, it kept cutting off before it finished explanation of some of the stops
The tour was very interesting! We followed along with the map in the app
Great way to explore Portland. We drove to places we would have never been able to get to on foot and it ends at a beautiful lighthouse.
It is easy to use and follow directions. Saves lots of time and covers everything for an overall tour. Can be used multiple times within a year.
It was an unexpected “feels like” 16 degrees (nation wide cold burst !) in early November. when we started our trip and even had a short bought of snow flurries, so this was the greatest alternative to a walking tour. Very enjoyable, at your own pace, Audio and GPS very informative, efficient and easy trouble shooting - but really didn’t have any problems! Great Day together for our short get away together!!! We both really enjoyed it !
This audio tours synced with GPS and guided us through town like a private chauffeur without a stranger in our car. We liked the feeling of understanding what we were driving around in real time. Very cool tour option.
It was fun to be able to drive around and be given the local information. The only problem was there was a road closure and it did not reroute us so we missed some things.
The self driving tour of Portland was perfect. We hearing the history and super easy to follow. Lever getting to know about the charming town of Portland.
Excellent tour even when we made a wrong turn the gps hit us on the correct landmark, where we continued.
Before booking, I read very mixed reviews about this offering. I knew this experience could be an absolute hit, a total miss, or somewhere in between. I was hoping for a hit, that wasn't our experience. The syncing of the app to the rental car's android auto did not work consistently. Even so, we used the list of the 19 sites that was sent with the original instructions email. We customized our tour, went to the sites we wanted to see, made the best of it, and kept it moving.
We have used GPS audio tours before, but this one was very poor. Unless you started at stop one and kept going, the tour did not sync. Also did not give directions to the next stop. Trying to negotiate with this in traffic in downtown Portland did not work. The few segments we were able to listen to played at random times and not when we were passing the sights they were talking about. Unfortunately, this whole thing was a waste of money and has soured us from trying any of the other products from this vendor.
What a great solution. I was with my 80 year old mother who cannot walk far. We chose between this or a trolley ride. I am so glad we chose this! We had a fantastic day- the narration was interesting- we could turn it loud so she could hear. You do have to be slightly tech savvy and STAY CALM. If you get off track the app will pop back on once you are in the right place! It’s really amazing. I would definitely get it again in another place.
For some reason, the audio cuts off the last word or part of word. We repeated it several times and it did the same thing.
It was informative and fun!! Our teenagers even listened along to the facts! We enjoyed the history and the fact that there was minimal walking.
This was really cool and a cheap easy way to do tours honestly all cities should have this. My friends in I were in Portland Maine for about half a day and we decided to do this self guided tour. It worked REALLY well honestly I was surprising lol great directions. And I was raining so we really couldn’t do much else today besides our own little tour. It took about an hour or so but we stopped in the middle to have lunch and go to shops. It was definitely worth the money. The only thing I’d change is that I would pass a couple of buildings or sculptures or something and there wouldn’t be any history video or info on them and I wanted to know just a little bit more! The tour made me excited to learn more about things. I think more people should make these!
The information included in the audio tour was interesting and helpful. We followed the instructions carefully and had no technical issues. The audio narration played through carplay but the map was visible only on my phone. Because of the low speed limit, this was not an issue. Most of the driving directions were given in a timely and helpful manner. The only problem I noticed was the quality of the narration deteriorated near the end of each segment. I am not sure why this was the case. It took more effort to understand the second half of the longer narration segments because they became somewhat garbled. Overall, the amount of helpful information about Portland and the convenience of going at our own pace made this a good value. We were glad we purchased the tour.
Good combination of Portland's history, fun facts and views. Length of the tour was perfect. Be sure to visit the Fort Williams Park!
This was very informative and helped us to understand much about Portland we didn't know. We liked how we were allowed to make stops and explore at our own pace.
The navigation worked great it was easy and accurate. It was the next best thing to doing a private tour. Didn’t have to worry about waiting on people to board the bus on time at every stop. Was able to pause the tour as long s needed.
This was a fun driving tour of Portland! Definitely READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE you leave. I saw some reviews who complained it didn’t work, but when I downloaded it the morning before heading out, it was pretty easy to follow. Great option to just get a sense of the place and some history as well, and really nice to just stay in the car when the weather is cold!
Audio trip worked well. It was cold and late in season, so walking tours not an option. Good information, easy to stop for lunch/beverage, and nice to be able to access again for a year. Well worth the money!
I loved this! I took this tour during the nighttime hours and it was still amazing! Only downside was one part of the tour was Under construction and we couldn’t drive down those roads so it was a little challenging, trying to get back on the tour but other than that I had a great time it was really informative and fun
Was a little hard to follow but we saw a lot of stuff we wouldn’t have even known to look for. Overall was a cool experience!
Since we had a vehicle available in Portland, this was an excellent and less expensive way to see the city. We had a little trouble getting to the starting point but once we started at the correct point, it ran very smoothly.
I wasn’t expecting too much based on the low price for the tour, but I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. The app worked well and was easy to use. The couple with us has lived in Portland for several years and they didn’t know hardly anything that was explained during the narrative from the tour. In short, it was a great experience.
This was the most difficult tour to follow. We got lost and had to turn around and find the tour three times. We saw some points of interest many times because of wrong turns. Although the stops were interesting, we were too frustrated to enjoy anything. We will avoid tours from this company in the future.
We enjoyed it very much. Wish it went to a beach that was off beaten track but that’s only thing. Narrator was great and lively. would have even loved it a little longer.
We went at our own pace. We missed a few things because gps wasn’t syncing. Overall, pretty cool concept and will definitely recommend and do it again.
Was a little hard to figure out how to use the audio tour. However, once we read the instructions and experimented, it seemed to work well. Construction in the area dud not help. Still, a good cheap tour on a rainy day.
Wanted a tour of Portland Oregon sent me to Portland Maine on the site it said Portland nothing about being Portland Maine
Arrived at beginning meeting area 6PM. Downloaded maps before leaving home. Once they opened app. No way to start the tour from the app. Waste of time and energy, moved on to next vacation plan, good luck and best wishes to everyone. Bama
This worked really well for us. If we missed something we could just go around the block. It was nice to be in control and in your own car. Would recommend.
This was such a perfect activity for us! We drove up to Portland and got to explore a bit before checking into our hotel. We loved seeing the coast and the history.
