Added to our walk of lovely Portland. Learned a few facts which surprised us. Good information and clear directions.

The material and directions were outdated. Very difficult to follow and not get lost. Too bad, this was definitely a missed opportunity.
Great experience! Very informative, loved the gps locator. Walk at your own pace. Great way to tour the area at a low cost!
Great way to get a high level overview of Newport for first timers to help you decide which places to explore more on your own.
Great information about the city of Portland. I did not know how important the town was in the 19th century. The audio is a little jumpy. But is easily followed.
A great way to learn the history of the area. The walk brings you through streets with cobblestones and hills.
It took us a few minutes to get familiar with the audio guide, but we got the hang of it really fast. Quite easy to use. We enjoyed all the stories and we learned quite a bit about the history of Portland.
Not a fan of this app. I guess I’m spoiled by another app that uses gps tracking and is flawless. I thought I would try another app, but this was not as seamless and intuitive. Parts would repeat or start prior to us getting to the next point. I often had to pause and restart once we got to the location. I ended up stopping when the next step was not clear and my husband and I interpreted the instructions differently. Too frustrating.
This a tour well worth the money paid for it. The instructions are clear and the history is very good! The voice recordings aren’t long and I love how you walk and explain the history. Just like a tour with a live person. And it’s great that we could go at our own speed. We weren’t waiting for others in the group. And we could stop into souvenir shops as we please. It genuinely was so wonderful, especially for the price. I highly recommend.
Loved the ability to pause and stop for pictures, snacks, etc. as you want. No group to contend with. Could always hear the „guide“. And the price is great!
You make a reservation and pay online and that's all you need to do to join this tour. Rory our guide was extremely friendly and totally passionate about sharing with us what he knew about Salem, MA. And he came across being very knowledgeable about the long history of Salem, not just the period associated with hunting and execution of so-called witches. That was an educational and entertaining tour for us. We had a fabulous time --- and at a very reasonable price. Other tours charge a lot more for merely sensational tours. My husband and I are happy that we picked this tour.
Hard to navigate. Missing street signs and out dated pictures. Interesting concept poorly delivered. Plus I found the site / application clunky.
For us the tour was a total disaster. Portland does not believe in street signs so when the audio would say to walk towards a certain street, we could never find where it was directing us. The audio did not correct us when we headed the wrong way. My husband had his headphones, and we were never synched to the same spot. Trying to follow the arrows on our phone to follow also did not work because Portland's streets are not on a grid and their streets are every which way. It was an inexpensive way to learn to go with an actual guide to see any area I want to see.
This was fantastic. Easy to follow since the map was included. The streets can be a little hard because street signs are often missing. But it’s obvious the guide has gone back and updated the directions. We loved it and found it interesting and full of history. We loved the donut stop! Some things were also whimsical and fun.
This particular tour was physically challenging for us. Lots of uphill travel in Portland Maine. We are 69 and had to quit early because we were tired.
Street signs were missing at a lot of intersections making it difficult to know where to turn. Steep hills should be part of the precautions.
We have used Audio Walking tours in other places and we have found the directions extremely well done. The narrator is clear and pleasant voice as he shares the history of Portland's.
Easy to follow and very informative. I loved walking this offline. Very clear narration. Highly recommend it.
Excellent tour with great historical information that shows you a part of the city that you may never explore. Easy to follow and just the right amount of time.
I listened to this tour in preparation for my visit to Portland to plan my shore day there. Quite helpful!!
It was a nice way to learn more about Portland.
Excellent audio tour—super easy to follow and very informative!
The audio tour was a great way to learn about Portland's history . I may have missed an explanation on how to use the app, but it took a while to figure out there was an Arrow that pointed which direction to go after each stop if the verbal cue was missed. Also would have liked a more upbeat music selection while walking between stops.
It's nicely timed with good directions. I didn't find that there was much material to work with, though
Nice walking tour that provides some history. I like that it isn't too long and helps you get oriented to the Old Wharf area.
This was definitely a cool experience. We saw things we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. There were a couple times we had to backtrack. I don’t know if we got ahead, or way directions were worded we got confused. Either way we enjoyed our time doing this.
If you are off track, it want let you know. We walked for 2 miles and realized we were off track. It just played classical music, which was good, but not informative enough to let us know to turn back. Needless to say we did not finish since we had to get back to the ship. It was leaving.
Had a short time and wanted to know about the city we were visiting. Such a great way to learn about the history of Portland, Me.
This was a nice alternative to the guided tours. Allowed you to go at your own pace. Audio was clear and quite informative for the history and buildings of Portland. Recommend if guided tours are booked up. Only challenge - you have to download a second APP to start the tour. This was in the directions but just not super clear. Works on both Apple and Android.
Poor experience- NOT USER FRIENDLY unable to connect with tour. At first I didn’t see where to enter the code. After consulting via chat they were unable to help me as to where to enter the code. After chatting with the 3rd person I was told where to enter the code but the code was then expired. When I did the chat they said to call tour manager by then we gave up. :(
Lots of history packed into an hour. Distance is probably 2 miles. App works great. Very detailed directions. If you have a pair of earbuds, you can share one tour with your spouse/other.
Have sturdy shoes as the brick and cobblestone pavements were rough. Make sure that the audio plays back well, as we had to download a second time to correct an audio malfunction. The narration was good. The speech was clear and the pace comfortable. Overall a good experience except for our download glitch, and that could have been on us.
Your phone needs to be on the proper setting for the location to work accurately. Once we figured that out it was great!
The app was a bit clumsy. Comments were sparse with little real historical information. The speaker was redundant and sounded like an irritating AI voice. Overall, there are many better audio tours available
The architecture in Portland is amazing! The tour is a bit of a hike, however. We didn’t finish the tour because we got so tired. It was well worth it, though. I never knew that Portland was so vibrant. I would definitely recommend the tour.
The tour in Portland was very nice and easy to follow with the pictures of the locations and a guidance compass that pointed the way. The voice was very pleasant and the tour was full of interesting information. Going to try the tour if the Freedom Trail in Boston!
Lots of history of churches. It takes you in a loop, often talking about a building from one side then coming back to it and talking more about the same thing from the other side.
Really great self paced walking tour, instructions are easy to follow and the info shared was perfect for our short cruise stop. We liked it so much that we cancelled our guided tour of the next stop and purchased another one. The narrators of each had their own style, highly recommend this walkntours for your adventures.
It was a nice tour except an important statue is no longer in the park (don’t know how long it’s been gone), the names of streets were different from the guided tour, and the entrance fee to Longfellow’s house has increased substantially.
Excellent experience. Highly recommend. You walk at your own pace and the sights are great. Pause as you need to. Some hills
Entertaining , amusing, thorough. An included map would've been nice and made it easier to use. Would definitely recommend, tho
This was a fantastic and easy way to see the city and historic sites that I otherwise would not have seen. I actually purchased the year long subscription to use on my other trips!
We liked being able to take the tour on our own timetable. Good value. You can stop and start the tour as needed. Easy to follow directions.
Nice tour. Just right amount of walking. The speed of the narrator was very close to the walking time
The really nice thing about the tour is that since it is self-guided you can go at your own pace, going slower or faster as needed. You can also repeat areas if you like. This was our first self-guided walking tour through Viator and I believe that as we use it in the future it will become easier and more second nature.
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Portland. The content was fun and informational. We know now for future tours we will take our earbuds to make it easier to walk and listen. The "in app" map was very helpful, since street signs seem almost non-existent on the first part of the tour. It was also nice to be able to pause the tour to take extra time to explore.
Easy to follow route. There are some slight upgrades but nothing strenuous. A lot of good historical context. Holy Donut is not to be missed. It was easy to pause the tour and stop at Bard Coffee for a macchiato and bathroom break, then pick up where we left off. Since the tour ends near Commercial St, it was an easy walk to the Portland Lobster Co for a late lunch. It was a great way to spend a few hours and see an interesting part of the city.
It was good. Informative overall but a few landmarks weren’t there anymore. Good historical information. I’d still recommend it though.
It was a great experience. I enjoyed learning the history of Old Port. The lighthouse was not there, so an updated tour would be nice. Overall, very well organized.
While we saw a lot of Portland and heard interesting historical facts, we found it hard to follow the directions at times having to rely on Google maps to find the next location.
