We were initially told by the receptionist that we would get a complimentary room upgrade, which was a pleasant surprise after a long and tiring trip. We were then asked to wait around 30 minutes while housekeeping prepared the upgraded room. After waiting all that time, the receptionist came back and informed us that the complimentary upgrade was no longer possible and that we would have to pay for the upgraded room instead. This was extremely disappointing and frustrating. If the upgrade wasn’t actually available, why offer it in the first place and make us wait more than 30 minutes? After traveling, the last thing we wanted was to spend extra time waiting only to be told the original offer had been withdrawn. The lack of communication and poor handling of the situation left a very negative first impression. I hope the hotel improves how it manages room upgrades so future guests don’t have the same experience.
An exceptional stay at the Rosewood Villa Magna (14–16 May). The rooms were impeccably appointed, dining was a delight, and the service throughout was genuinely personal and attentive. Special thanks to Claudia, Rubén, and Laura — each of them went above and beyond to make the stay memorable. A hotel I would return to without hesitation. ★★★★★
Having experienced extended stays within the Rosewood collection — including several months at the extraordinary Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel — one inevitably arrives in Madrid with a certain framework of expectation. Rosewood, at its best, represents more than hospitality. It embodies atmosphere, choreography, restraint, and a quiet mastery of detail. It is therefore difficult not to observe that Rosewood Villa Magna does not currently reflect that same standard. Where Crillon radiates luminosity, Villa Magna feels subdued to the point of heaviness. The lighting lacks intention. The common areas do not invite pause. There is an absence of theatricality — not in extravagance, but in precision. At Crillon, service flows invisibly. One is never aware of effort. Here, service feels present but not orchestrated. The rhythm falters. Conversations among staff occasionally puncture the stillness. Plates linger. Coffee arrives without finesse, once even carrying perceptible sediment — a detail that would be unthinkable in Paris. Breakfast, which at Rosewood properties is often a statement of identity, feels here procedural rather than curated. The fruit selection is modest. The buffet lacks vitality. Regional products do not shine with the pride they deserve. Nothing is offensive — yet nothing elevates. In-room experience follows the same pattern. Correct, composed, yet lacking soul. The mattress does not envelop. The lighting does not flatter. The atmosphere does not transport. There is no distinctive scent marking arrival. No ritual that signals place. No narrative binding the guest to the property’s history or its city. One senses management, but not vision. Operation, but not artistry. The location, undeniably, remains exceptional. The Salamanca district carries grace on its own. Yet great neighbourhoods cannot substitute for great identity. Rosewood at its finest — as exemplified by Hôtel de Crillon — achieves a state where every detail feels inevitable and irreplaceable. Villa Magna, at present, feels interchangeable. This is not a condemnation. It is a contrast. And within contrast lies clarity.
An exceptional stay , an elegant and discreet hotel that truly cares for every detail. The room was beautifully designed, serene, and perfectly comfortable. The bed was pure luxury, offering one of the best nights of sleep I’ve ever had. Elegant comfort at its finest
