My wife and I have just returned to our hotel following our ‘West of Madeira’ Tour. An excellent tour…why? Our guide, Fernando (pretty sure I’ve got that right) was highly informative, engaging and generally a good guy to have around. He couldn’t have made our day out more enjoyable!

Itinerary
A dazzling fishing bay, with many colourful fishing boats. Travel through its narrow streets filled with life and with a surprise in every corner. Near the pier, you can find several bars and restaurants where you can have a taste of local cuisine and drinks.
This is one of the highest sea cliffs in the world and the highest in Europe (entrance fee not included). A viewpoint with glassbottom floor, will provide with adrenaline views over the fajã 580 meters below, and panoramic sight over Funchal and Câmara de Lobos.
This small town by the sea, is situated in between high mountains that lead up to the center of the island. With several shops and cafes, you will be able to enjoy the views sitting by the promenade. Several landmarks to be found here, such as the Lighthouse and Fort of São Bento.
This plateau, located at 1300-1500 meters high, offers stunning views over the green mountains and valleys. It is also the location of Rabaçal and starting point for many famous levadas, such as Risco and 25 Fontes.
You will have your first sights of Porto Moniz arriving from high in the mountains, right next to the sea with its natural swimming pools (entrance fee not included) and its pure beautifull landscape. Here it will be the lunch time (entrance fee not included) and you are free to go to the restaurant, cafe, or explore the pools.
Right after Porto Moniz, you will arrive to Seixal. This platform flowing down from the mountains into the sea, has its own natural beauty. With lushfull green mountains in its back, and the blue ocean ahead. Here you can also see the famous "Véu da Noiva" (Bride's Veil) waterfall.
By the sea, this municipality is built in between a mountain range that heads south. With two massive mountains on each side, this is surely a landmark when visiting the north of the island. With many cafes and restaurants you are guaranteed to have a taste of its local gastronomy.

Our guide Eduardo collected us from our hotel at the prearranged time He then made two further pick ups (A French couple and another English couple) His commentary was entertaining, enlightening and informative. Even more impressively , in fluent English AND French. I would not hesitate to recommend this tour to anybody , as you will be entertained and more importantly, you will be educated about the lovely island of Madeira.
Great comms. Excellent driver- very knowledgeable but most importantly a VERY safe driver. Had an excellent day seeing the island.
The tour guide made alot of sexual comments in the tour. As a woman we felt a bit taken back by 4 different comments that all pertained to be sexual. This should not be allowed as he was a good driver and made good suggestions. He must tone down the sexual comments. Nobody was laughing either. :(
Excellent communication from our tour provider beforehand and Paolo was waiting for us at our agreed pick up point. We had several stops across Funchal as others joined our trip but we were soon on our way to see the sights of Madeira. There were 10 of us in total, English and French speakers and Paolo drove well, providing excellent commentary as required during our trip. Definitely recommend this trip and Paolo was a great guide!
Such a great tour. Got to check off everything that I was hoping to see on the western part of the island. Highly recommend!
We really enjoyed the tour. Driver / Guide paid attention to detail and delivered both humour and quality information as we passed over the island to the west coast. Plenty of comfort breaks and time for lunch
Our guide Bruno was a superb driver on the very steep roads always carefully taking the many turns and parking in safe and convenient spots. The 30 min stops are sometimes a bit of a rush depending on how busy a spot is e.g. Cabo Girão had a queue to purchase the ticket (better to buy it in advance online) and was busy on the platform too. If you need a toilet stop (bring 0,50cents) as well it can be tight. Bruno had a lot of interesting information which he explained to us during the drive between stops. He is a fun and humorous guy who shows care when things need attention. We had to take a little detour towards the end because someone slipped and needed medical care. Bruno handled the situation in a calm and organised manner. We had a great tour and I would recommend it highly.
The information provided in the itinerary sums up this interesting day tour. The tour is well paced with more than enough time at each stop on the route. Our guide Paulo was informative and would answer any additional questions which I posed. He was a friendly and humorous character, who I noticed was very attentive to his more mature guests. As an overview and introduction of the west and north of Madeira I would recommend this tour.
Im Just gonna Say few simple words. Absolutly fantasic. The tour guide was Really nice and he explain Really well all the entire tour.
Very good service, from pick up & drop off at hotel throughout trip with a very knowledgeable guide providing a running commentary in various languages about the island
My wife and I had a wonderful day on this tour of beautiful landscapes of the island. Our tour guide, Richard provided a wealth of information about the culture, history and local fauna of the various areas. He also demonstrated safe driving skills and courtesy to others using the roads. The scenery on this tour was spectacular and thanks to DG tours for making it a memorable day.
We enjoyed all stops on the tour. The natural pools was our favorite stop! Just incredible. Fernando, our guide did an excellent job both driving and informing.
Nice experience, our guide kept perfect timing at all the stops and cheered up the trip with his explanations and jokes while on the road.
Unfortunately, this is not a company I would ever recommend to anyone. Having been on numerous excursions worldwide this was quite simply the worst one EVER. Wholly based on the driver/guide who simply was the worst possible person to ever been given a job like this. His attitude was to say shameful would be an understatement - absolutely appalling in dealing with clients in every manor of the trip not what one would expect on holiday. He managed to ruin our excursion - maybe this company should check their employees temperaments before employing them. Shockingly awful chap badly done.
A fantastic day trip. Our guide, Raphael (“if you forget my name, remember Ninja Turtle!) was a fantastic guide. He was extremely knowledgeable, funny and polite. The visit took us to Cabo Girão (yes, you have to pay but it’s only 3€ to stand on the viewing platform), and the lovely towns of Ribeira Brava, Porto Moniz and Sao Vincente, also taking in the views of Calheta and Seixal. Raphael explained about the fauna of the area and the local history of the area which I also find fascinating. A recommended tour and a fantastic guide. Fully recommended.
Wonderful trip, Eduardo was a fantastic guide, giving us the names of all the fruit and flowers, his commentary in English was excellent and his expert driving negotiating all the bends and narrow roads was unbelievable! The scenery, the beautiful little towns and Eduardo made this a trip not to be missed
Fernando is probably one of the best guides I have ever encountered He was extremely professional and knowledgeable Always kept updating us while on the drive
We had a great time on this tour and the driver was very knowledgeable. Unfortunately we were late being collected but through no fault of the driver (anccident en route) and the tour company kept us informed. We were collected from the cruise port right by our ship which was just perfect, thank you.
Great trip, lots of variety, guide Bruno was perfect driver and guide. West is stunning but the north is a different place and wild country.
Thoroughly recommend this company for both East and West tours if visiting Madeira. Both sides of the island very different so you need to do both. I went with 86 year old mother and both drivers were exceptionally caring and kind to her. We had Bruno for one and Fernando for the other. Both superb and make it a very pleasurable informative day out. Amusing and genuinely lovely chaps. After the terrifying trips done on the local buses (cornering fast around very high twisting roads) it was wonderful to be driven safely and sedately by them. Do wear t-shirts for South coast and then jumpers and thick coat for both trip as so much colder in the North in December. Scenery spectacular and highly recommended for all ages.
Went on the west of island tour yesterday with Raphael. He was excellent, very knowledgeable about the island and the places we visited, also the flora and fauna. We were very impressed. A great tour in a comfortable minibus with plenty of time to explore. Saw and learnt about parts of the island we would never have found ourselves. Highly recommended
Our guide was excellent, day full of impressions, no rush, at the same time no waiting, I liked every minute. Very good value for money
The west tour was good, the driver and tour operator was ok. We stopped at almost all the sites as described, except we didn’t stay within the prescribed time, we also did not do a proper stop at Seixal Beach which was disappointing. The tour operator provided some good information but in the second half of the tour had some strong personal opinions which wasn’t appropriate for the tour.
Our guide was so friendly, polite, happy, funny and knowledgeable. We learnt so much about the island and local culture/history. The sites were superb and there was plenty of time at each area to enjoy it all. The only thing I would recommend for anyone going on the trip, is to take travel sickness tablets, even if you’ve never suffered with it before, as the roads are continually windy. Our guide was a very considerate driver and the travel sickness and roads were not his fault. A great day out….thank you! 🤩
Rafael was an amazing guide. He was so knowledgeable and passionate about Madeira. My husband and I really enjoyed the West tour. We had the right amount of time at each stop. We got so much information about the island. I would highly recommend this tour.
Our tour guide, Dennis, was excellent, full of information and humor throughout the day! If you’d like to see different parts of the island in one day this tour is for you. An awesome experience overall. A little longer than scheduled but wasn’t too bad.
Our tour guide was renaissance man Eduardo who has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Madeiran and was determined to show us the best of the West. A kind and generous guide, Eduardo ensured that we had a fantastic day out and provided us with lots of information, tips and advice for the rest of it stay on the island. We cannot thank him enough for a truly memorable tour ... and he had a beautiful singing voice. Heartily recommended.
We went with Bruno, he was such a fun tour guide. We saw very lovely attractions and the time frame was absolutely enough for this much locations. Highly recommended!
A wonderful day out. Very well organised. Fernando, our driver, was knowledgeable, courteous and a very careful driver. He spoke excellent English for us and gave us just the right amount of information. We saw some lovely villages and scenery and the timing in each stop was just right. Thoroughly recommend D-G Travel and Viator.
Don’t use this company. Tour guides are very rude and just want to finish their tours. Disgusting guide and disgusting service. Stay away!
This tour was made very special with our tour guide Rafael. He was funny knowledgeable and very friendly. He made the places of interest alive. He made us laughed all the time and show us scenic places with gusto and passion. I will definitely book us a tour this time to the east with him when we come back next year! ABRIGADO!
Just returned from a great trip to Porto Moniz in Madeira, 17th Nov. Tour booked through DG travel and our tour guide and driver, Rafael, made the day both great fun and informative. Rafael shared interesting knowledge of the island and it's history and all delivered with great humour. There were eight in our tour group and a lot was packed into the schedule but it never felt rushed. We visited advertised places of interest and others and had plenty of time at Porto Moniz to swim in the volcanic pools and ended the day enjoying a poncha and sharing some laughs. Would highly recommend the tour but especially our tour guide Rafael, who really made the day.
A well organised tour, to part of the island we had not visited before. The multilingual tour guide was knowledgable and provided an interesting commentary.
We enjoyed all of the itenary. Bruno is such an excellent guide. He shared brief interesting informations therefore avoided overloading. He is witty, knowledgeable and caring.
Good trip round the west of the island with plenty of little stops. We did take our swimming stuff as the stop for lunch was a longer stop at Porto Moniz where the rock pools are but unfortunately there was a very long queue to get into the main swimming pool that has toilets showers etc so we didn’t bother. We took a picnic with us which saved a bit of time as the cafes were also busy and just had a coffee before getting back on the bus. The roads up and down the mountains were interesting! Altogether a worthwhile trip and we were lucky enough to have the front seats next to the driver in the minibus.
Beautiful scenery! Great family tour- we visited all the best sites with the most amazing views. Our children loved where we stopped for lunch- the swimming pools there were great! Don't forget to bring a towel and your swimming costume!! Our driver made it fun- a great tour! Highly recommended!
No air conditioning on the mini bus made for a very uncomfortable journey. Driver ranting on about equality and diversity issues and politics, no interest of this on holiday Thankyou. Poor communication from the tour company with regards pick up. Following lunch the last 2 1/2 hours of the trip pointless, just constant photo opportunities instead of cultural content. Timings all wrong on stop offs, only 20 mins for some villages and longer for cliff top lookouts!!
A very pleasant tour including the north and south sides of the island made all the better by the tour guide Reuben who was knowledgeable and amusing. Tip: Don't panic about the queue at the volcanic pool, it moves very quickly.
The tour started off badly and only got worse. Our guide picked us up and never even as much as said good morning. It took him almost a half hour before he told us his name. He had a very strange sense of humor and even stopped on the road to pick up roadkill and show us all a dead bird. At the second to last stop our van broke down. The driver asked us all to get out and he went down the road by himself to try and get the car started. It was almost an hour for him to come back and tell us what was going on. Meanwhile we were left in the hot sun in the middle of the road and with a lot of bugs around. We were out in the middle of nowhere with no shade or facilities. He told us the company was sending another van for us but that it would be at least 45 minutes. When the other van arrived they never thought to ask if anyone needed a bathroom break or brought us water or even apologized. We were not upset that the van broke down, things like that happen, but it was their poor customer service and lack of communication that has gained this poor review. Do not take a tour from Dennis, the birdman, and avoid this tour company. There are plenty of other good ones.
A great tour around the west of funchal. Picked us up straight from the hotel. Our tour guide was Bruno and he was great! Very laid back and informative. Enough time at each stop Great trip
Porto Moniz is beautiful. The rest of the day wasn't memorable. Tourist traps and a town under construction
I recently had the pleasure of taking the West Tour of Madeira with guide Bruno, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. Bruno is an excellent guide who is extremely knowledgeable about the area, and his enthusiasm and passion for Madeira is truly unfectious.from the moment we met, Bruno was warm, funny and welcoming, and he immediately put me at ease with his friendly demeanor and vast knowledge of the island. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating stories about the history, culture, and people of Madeira, which added so much depth and richness to the experience. The tour itself was breathtaking, with stunning views of the island's rugged coastline, quaint villages, and lush greenery. Bruno took us to some of the most beautiful and interesting spots on the island, and his expert guidance made the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend!!!
Was thinking of renting a car and decided on this tour instead. We didn’t have to worry about navigating or even better, parking at some of the crowded sites. Got to enjoy great views while getting informative and amusing information from our guide/driver. Had a great day! Recommended.
The whole tour was great. Wonderful mountain views and some lovely stops. The long lunch stop by the pools worked well.
This was not the tour I had booked. I paid extra for the tour with a guide as I wanted to learn more about the area but on the day we had a driver only. This was disappointing and not being able to contact Viator by email has not helped.
My partner and I did this tour and it was wonderful, but surprisingly tiring. The sites we visited were beautiful and gave us the opportunity to go through the mountains in the center of the island and see the north coast. The tour guide was friendly and set us up with an exceptional lunch, although he went off on a bit of a rant at one point which was strange. It was a lot to do in one day so would not recommend if you only have a day or two in Madeira and you want time to relax.
The whaling museum is there. First half very in-depth and very good. Second half just for kids. Worth a look.
Fernando our guide was extremely knowledgeable about all things Madeira! The timings were right, though it was a whole 9-5 day there were plenty of opportunities to walk, explore, take photos and relax for lunch so the day was broken up nicely.
Very nice trip with many stops and good picture- time. Very glad we did this tour. And, we don't talk about Bruno! 😍 I packed for a swim in Porto Moniz, but didn't do it, 🐤. ☁️🌊 We did have good weather mostly! West Madeira gave me flashbacks from travelling on New Zealand, South Island, Australia and Bosnia.
