The history walking tour was a great introduction to Funchal. The leader was very knowledgeable and I learned quite a bit.

Itinerary
The church has stood for 185 years and is a vibrant part of life for dozens of English-speaking residents on the island and for many thousands of people from all countries of the world. An amazing venue in a beautiful setting for weddings concerts & music events for visitors and locals alike.
At Quinta das Cruzes Garden, visitors can admire archaeological sculptures, including a tombstone that, according to tradition, covers the mortal remains of “Henry the German”. In the centre of the garden there are two magnificent 16th-century Manueline windows sculpted in basalt.
The Santa Clara Convent was built in the late 16th century, by order of the second captain-major of Madeira Island, João Gonçalves da Câmara, in the vicinity of his father's residence, to gather the daughters of the local nobility.
The old Jesuits' College of Funchal, now the University of Madeira's rectory, has witnessed more than four centuries of History. Now it is the focal point for exhibitions, tours and several services available to our visitors.

Our English speaking guide was informative, friendly and patient. He went at our pace whilst ensuring we didn’t miss anything
Exceptional walking tour led by Len, a very interesting young German man on a gap year, volunteering as a guide. I was the only customer on this walk and benefitted from Len's detailed knowledge and enthusiasm as he brought the history of Funchal to life. We visited all the sites on the itinerary and Len delivered interesting facts in a very engaging manner. One point to note for others is that a part of the walk involves going up a steep path with many steps, which was fine for me but might be difficult for those with mobility issues or other health problems. This should perhaps be mentioned in the tour description. Overall great experience.
We recently enjoyed the "mysteries" walk with Aaron, a volunteer student from Germany. It is well worth it and we learned a lot and saw some "hidden" gems of Funchal. Highly recommended.
This was an excellent and very detailed tour. We discovered local history and museums for further exploration highly recommended
This was a really interesting walk around part of Funchal, a place I had visited before. 'Len' the guide was most informative and showed the group (we were 5 in total) various places we might otherwise have missed (and I had missed in the past) and explained the significance of a lot of others too. Definitely fascinating! In my opinion, well worth a couple of hours of anyone's holiday. This was my second Madeira Heritage walk (did one last year too) and would certainly do another.
Terrific guided tour courtesy of our guide, Len, a university gap-year student. Highly recommended, and a first-rate tour.
My tour guide Sabrin was absolutely amazing! It turned out to just be the two of us which actually was perfect. I’m also glad they didn’t cancel the tour because it was just me. She was a wealth of knowledge and was able to answer all my questions while providing some mysterious and fun facts about Funchal and Madeira. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to know about the history of Funchal.
A wonderful & informative experience! Sabrine was extremely knowledgeable. Her English was excellent & she gave us a lot of information & tips for future visits. We both thoroughly enjoyed our walk & will most certainly do another guided tour when we next visit the island. The fact that these young people do this work (not for profit) to raise funds to help students who need support is an example of the care & generosity of the youth of today. Thankyou for an excellent tour.
Excellent experience. Interesting two-hour walk in which you learn a lot about the history, but in a fun way. My guide, Sabrin Guichard, was very knowledgable and she shared a lot of legends and interesting little facts. Also took me to some lesser-known locations that are well worth a visit (courtyards and gardens of churces, cloisters and museums that are free to enter, without a guide I would not have known this). Also, the proceeds of these tours go to initiatives that help univerity students who are struggling financially. Whilst learning about the city, you are also supporting a good cause!
Very informative guide. We were glad to contribute to supporting the less well off university students too. Saw some places that were unknown to friends who have been coming fir 20 years!
I thought that a company called Maderian heritage would employ guides from Madeira. While the guide I had was excellent , it’s not the same as having a local taking about his/her own place. Also this tour worked out very expensive as I paid the agent running the tour and then felt obliged to give the volunteer guides more money. Sent from my iPhone
They cancel the tours without informing you in advance. I have ordered the Mysteries of Funchal tour, arrived at the agreed timing only to find out that the tour was cancelled. The lady suggested a replacement to Old Town Tour, that was out of my interest. When asked, why they don’t inform in advance, the response was that everyone is happy with replacement. Oh boy. If your schedule is tight and you have a specific demand to get a particular tour, better to contact them a day in advance for repeated confirmation. The tone of communication was rude. “If it was the only thing I am doing” was the response why nobody could inform me at least few hours in advance.
Very enjoyable and informative. We learnt a lot and found some unusual places. I would definitely recommend this tour.
Excellent Fun and informative. The guide Laura was great and all proceeds go to a good cause. Tour starts in a lovely setting in the heart of Funchal
Interesting to explore some areas of Funchal not visited before, and able to return to go to the museums at our own pace. Guide had excellent English and pace of tour was good, and able to learn new acts even though have visited city many times previously. Good to support the Erasmus program too.
Thanks to Zoe, our young Austrian guide, my husband and I had a wonderful 2 hours walking around Funchal. Discovering interesting places and enjoying all the amazing facts and figures from our guide. We would thoroughly recommend these Tours and the fee is used to pay for the students food and accommodation.
Very interesting tour, guide spoke perfect English and was extremely knowledgeable. Saw lots more than if we had just wandered around ourselves with a guide book. Have already booked another tour with History Tellers. Highly recommend.
An interesting tour, its good to know the fee supports other students. We were taken on the tour by a very nice student who while not from Madeira - had really learned her stuff.
What a wonderful experience, from seeing the last bit of Funchal City Wall (just up from the shopping centre), to the views across the city with the history of who lived where, then the stone window frame from the floods of the 1800's... Should also mention the lovely end to the walk at the college and the very helpful and friendly staff at the booking desk at the shopping centre.
Thoroughly enjoyed the old mysteries of Funchal with Wendell, a great guide with loads of knowledge, highly recommended
We always try to fit in a walking tour at a new destination, & when this was recommended by our hotel, we quickly made our booking & were so pleased that we did. Our guide was Vincent (from Lichtenstein) who impressed us with his knowledge of Funchal & the places we visited, which included the Santa Clara Convent & the English Church. As a result of the latter, we found out that there was a classical concert taking place the following morning in the garden, & attending it was one of the high points of our visit. The tour ends at the Jesuit College, & afterwards do make sure to visit the Jesuit Church which has the most incredible interior.
Was a wonderful tour with Dulce , an excellent guide. An excellent introduction to Funchal and its interesting history. Our group of 6 loved everything about the tour , especially the English cemetery and the convent. Big Bang for the buck . Also we were also happy to be supporting university students.
We met our student guide at the La Vie shopping centre (2nd floor near the escalator) for a 2 hour walking tour of the city centre. We visited the market, churches etc. and learned a lot about the history and culture. Very pleased the 10 euro pp will go to help the university students. Can definitely recommend for first time visitors.
Sophie our guide was incredibly knowledgeable. She took us to all sorts of interesting places we wouldn’t have known about and some where I don’t think we would have been able to go without her. Particularly good tour to get to understand the history of Madeira. Some great views too. We loved it. Note though there are some very steep roads to climb
This was a very enjoyable and worthwhile hour-and-a-half walking tour. The guides are students earning some well deserved cash by taking tourists around the less well-trodden sites in Funchal - the English church (which pretended it wasn’t a church when it was built), the convent and the sensory garden. The commentary was never dry but was clearly well researched. A very enjoyable morning’s activity
Were told of this by our hotels guest relations. Went to the meeting point at La Vie shopping centre, we called in at 10 am when they started , and were told we could go straight away if we wanted to do the Mystery tour, So off we set , just the two of us with our guide the knowledgeable Alba. The best part was the trip, was the convent. A truly exceptional set of buildings with a history that is part of the history of Madeira. This tour is excellent value at €5 each. Excellent guide. This is a must do. thanks
The views were fabulous! I stayed at the Youth Center of Madeira. Extremely clean, well located and attentive staff. I experienced the island’s gastronomy like sppetada, lapas, sword fish with maracujah sauce, caco cake, honey cake, maracujah poncha, traditional poncha and homemade ginja liqueur. In Curral das Moniras I loved the chestnut soup, also tried the tomato soup with egg and in the area of the natural pools, in Porto Moniz, I ate the fish soup
A good addition if you have seen the main attractions of Funchal: Interesting facts in German in places you probably wouldn't have visited or found otherwise - and at a reasonable price.
We had our guide all to ourselves on this two-hour walk. Sabrin showed us many beautiful corners of Funchal and always told interesting information and stories in her very nice way. Alone we would never have discovered so many exciting corners of Funchal. To name but one, the huge bookstore was a very special, unexpected experience! Thank you Sabrin for the great tour!
I have to record the sympathy of the organization, I signed up for a tour and when I met with the group I verified that it was in German. Attention, these tours are not made in Portuguese. Faced with this situation and since I understand reasonably English, I did a tour in English, where I was the only participant. I thank you for the sympathy and next I will pay attention to the choice of language.
We had a super competent, sympathetic guide. It was very interesting! Can highly recommend this historic city tour! Thank you
I had the pleasure of taking part in this guided tour. Although I was the only participant, the tour still took place. I have come to know many corners of Vural that are not included in every guidebook. Many stories about the island and the insight into many buildings that you would not otherwise get to know have made this tour an incomparable experience.
It's definitely worth it. Will also do the other tours offered by the organizer.
RV at the La Vie mall. Very kind and competent young guide. Guided tour in French. I was all alone. Very interesting discovery of the moving English cemetery, the surprising Anglican church and the magnificent convent of Santa Clara. The Quinta das Cruzes was unfortunately closed. Provide a camera.
The Mysteries of Funchal ride with Alba Esteve was great! A student trained like a professional, and she's a volunteer! We would never have seen all these things and so much detail without her. all in great English- The hourly frequency of the tours guarantees few participants for each group: great choice! The two hours flew by. Congratulations indeed!!
Although I was the only tourist who booked this sightseeing tour at this time, a German-speaking guide was nevertheless organized! The young lady, Esmeralda, offered me a great, historically extremely interesting yet individual (we were only two of us) tour in the upper town of Funchal. Thanks again at this point! And all this for inexpensive € 10,--!
