Itinerary
A true fairy tale in a green paradise that starts in the Queimadas’ house. Until you reach the majestic waterfall, the path is remarkably green. Along the way you have a magnificent view over the village of São Jorge and the great mountains. The water is always present along the walk. You can see the water gushing from the walls, flowing on the levada and falling from the sky on raining days. It’s a fantastic trail and safe all year long. You will find some tunnels along the way so do not forget your flashlight and protect your head. Arriving at Caldeirão Verde, immerse yourself by the breathtaking view of the huge waterfall falling on the cold and crystalline lagoon. Make a picnic before you go, while enjoying the relaxing sound of water falling.

Great walk with great guide. Sara was full of information and advice on the walk. She also tended to my minor first aid needs having had an argument with a large tree branch! She’s a credit to Lido Tours!
Liana the guide was great, and Luis the driver too. We did a short stop in Santana for grocery and washrooms before the hike. The hike itself was easy, but very muddy.
Interesting hike was made a little less enjoyable due to the large number of people. We got there early to try to avoid crowds but ended up spending a significant portion of the hike either letting faster hikers or completely uncourteous trail runners through, or having to figure out how to step aside to make room for people coming the other way. There are many points on the hike where this was dangerous, as there were spots where the path was extremely narrow, and the flimsy cable hand rails were anything but reassuring. All of this would have been more tolerable if the end goal (the Caldera) hadn’t been a bit underwhelming. Jut too many people. If we were to return to Madeira I would definitely choose a lesser known Levada.
It was a lovely guided walk. A bit dangerous at times with the sheer drops, not suitable for anyone scared of heights that’s for sure.
Fabulous day out with an excellent guide. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and walking trail. The route took you up to the source of the water and the pathway was not steep. Had to go through 4 tunnels and a torch is needed to see where you are walking. Great fun, would love to try another one.
Interesting, fun, and awesome. Even though I am scared of heights, I am delighted I managed all of the levada walk. The views are breathtaking, and I loved seeing the trout in the waters!
A good 9 mile trail walk. Described by the guide as moderate to difficult but only because of distance and narrowness of trail in parts. Not a difficult walk as it is generally flat but you need to take care under foot due to exposed tree roots and slippery stones at times. Four tunnels on the route and a torch is needed. We went on a Saturday and it was very busy which makes passing at the narrow parts of the route a little tricky as the route takes you out and back along the same path. We went with Lido Tours and it was useful to have a guide who explained a lot about the vegetation en route but walk is easily done without a guide. We stopped for lunch at the waterfall before turning round to head back along the same route. There is a cafe at the start of the route so you can get tea, coffee etc but probably worth taking some food and water with you. A shower proof jacket is recommended and we needed them at the end as there was a slight rain shower.
Great walk led by a friendly host. In the middle of summer the waterfalls were not in full flow but the hike had plenty of beautiful vistas regardless. Note it can get very busy on this route and you often have to pass people on very narrow parts of the levada.
Sorry to be the only negative review here but I wish someone had made these comments before my husband and I spent time on this levada walk. If you have even the most minor hip, knee or ankle issues you should steer clear of this walk. It’s 4+ hours on a treacherous trail of sharp rocks, potholes, mud and uncomfortably narrow stone paths. The path out is the same path as the path in. There are no areas to sit and rest along the way to the large waterfall. I wound up with new hip and knee injuries that I never experienced before.
Amazing nature view! Flora, fauna, and water features in abundance. Our guide Elder is very knowledgeable and was attentive to everyone..
Levada walks vary so take the one that fits for you. You can have easy ones. short one or ones that require good conditions. Best time of the day is morning. It can also be quite cool so have enough clothing with you
Lovely chap picked us up from hotel in mini bus. Told us lots about Madeira en route to levada walk. He then guided the walk with lots of info re flea and fauna. 10 miles of quite slow gradient with decent trainers on. Lovely trip
The hike was beautiful. The nature is amazing especially the destination in the end at the waterfall is located in a beautiful place surrounded by mountains. Our guide Sara was amazing and thaught us a lot about the nature you walk passed.
This is an excellent thrill seekers walk it wasn't what I was expecting at all. Surprisingly easy going and the scenery is amazing everything from the sheer drop down to the caves its a top walk in madeira I'd fully recommend. Also the guide was a genuine guy who made sure everyone is OK and he had a great sense of humour.
The agency mini bus picked me up from nearby my hotel. The driver was good, the guide was friendly and made sure we were all ok during our walk. The walk itself was beautiful, it took no longer than 2 hours each way, and in the midst of our walk we stopped for a picnic by the gorgeous waterfall. Waterproof footwear is a must and make sure to bring a flash light for the tunnels as they can be quite dark and flooded with water. Overall a pleasant experience, the views are fantastic and I would recommend and use Lido Tours services again in the future.
A truly beautiful hike in some of the most gorgeous landscapes and woods I have ever seen. The guide and driver were both very friendly and helpful! The group is a bit big (15persons) for the very narrow paths, and unfortunately it felt a little bit rushed, so if you like to go at a slower pace or take a lot of pictures along the way, maybe go for a private guided tour. Absolutely a great experience for the price though! Highly recommend visiting this area.
Having done several of the 'easy' walks with Lido tours we decided to try a walk with moderate difficulty. Our guide (Anita) is very knowledgeable regarding mountain walks in Madeira - she has been a mountain guide for 22 years. This walk with a moderate difficulty rating involved walking through a waterfall - it is not possible to pass it - you have to walk through the water pouring onto you from above. The walk is probably better suited to those who are experienced mountain walkers - I found it to be difficult but did complete the walk and enjoyed the natural environment and views along the way. If you are considering booking onto this walk, be sure to take waterproof clothing and walking/hiking boots as trainers/sports shoes are not suitable for the wet and slippery conditions underfoot. You will also need a change of clothing on your return to the starting point - the route down is the route up in reverse so you will negotiate the waterfall twice. There are also 4 unlit tunnels to pass through in both directions - you will need a torch or at least the torch on a mobile phone to help you on your way. This is a very different environment to sunny Funchal.
From the start of our day with Lido Tours t until the end everything was excellent Pick up on time good driver and transport but what really made it a great day was Charlotte our guide she was very informative very thoughtful of the group but not too invasive The scenery was excellent a long but pleasant walk
We did two Lavada Walks with Lido Tours, Caldeirao Verde and Larano. The tours were well organized. We got picked up on time and had the chance to buy some picnic on the way. The guide had a good knowledge about the island and the fauna. The walks were absolutely stunning. Great views.
I enjoyed it a lot. The guide is very friendly and prepared. I learned many new things and met interesting people in the tour.
We took 3 tours with Lido tours. All were wonderful! The bus was always clean and on time. Charlotte the guide was exceptional! She is very friendly and knowledgeable and we could really feel the added value she gave to the tour- explained about the history of Madeira, various plant and trees, and local culture. She kept everyone in pace and safe, and gave free time to explore when possible. We are really grateful for the opportunity we had to take this tours with Charlotte and would recommend it to anyone!
Super nice walk. Easy & flat it’s slightly longer than mentionned but totally doable! You feel like you are immersed in nature. Really recommend it.
I had a great time on Phillpes tour. He has a lot of knowledge and will guide you safe and sound through the narrow walk way. Bring a torch and steady footwear and you will enjoy this walk very much. Soak in the green wilderness and Be astonished
Diogo was a great guide and we had a wonderful time. I can warmly recommend the tour and we are very happy that we did the hike.
We had everything organized to visit Madeira in 4 days, and everything went wrong when Lido Tours canceled our excursion to Caldeirao Verde with only 2 days' notice, without giving us alternatives for the same day on another levada. They are not trustworthy.
Highly recommended. Hiking for all ages. Simple walk. Under the fresh trees
Overwhelming view. The point of interest at the end of the route is stunning. It's worth the effort. It is advisable to start the route early to count on the return in hours with daylight. I recommend appropriate shoes and a small flashlight.
I loved!!! The entire walk is simply incredible. The nature, the waterfall and everything you can see along the way is magical!
The hiking guide was an original and very well informed. The path is very beautiful with many views of the mountains. The stop at the end was very good. Delicious cakes and poncha.
We did it from the parking lot. If you are in Madeira don't miss it. Be careful for any hike on levadas or peaks in Madeira, it is interesting to take a front.
The guide was a very friendly woman. She spoke 5 languages! The walk was easy to do and the guide could tell us a lot what definitely finished it. We had 1 person in the group who had difficulty walking and had not indicated this well to the organization, but this solved them well. The walk takes about 2 hours and then you have 20 minutes to pee/eat at a restaurant. Afterwards we got more tips from the guide for the island. Thank you so much!
Ein wunderschöner Ausflug in die Levadas Der Guide super und das Wetter hat auch mitgespielt. Immer wieder gerne.
For me one of the best levad trails in Madeira Extensive, with tunnels, immersed in nature and draining in a waterfall with all its splendor. No doubt you should not leave Madeira without going through it. At the end there is a bar to reheat the lost energies.
I liked and recommend both the walk, and the guide (Miguel), who was doing simultaneous English-Portuguese translation. When booking, I had selected Spanish (my mother tongue) and Portuguese (because I also understand).
The whole walk was beautiful. The landscapes are wonderful and the silence along it is fantastic. It was a wonderful experience.
You will find a large parking lot from the hike to park (3 € per day). The route itself is quite simple and relatively flat up to the first waterfall where you can have lunch and possibly swim for the brave ones. At this level you will be about 7.5 km from the starting point. If you want to extend the hike to Caldeirão do Inferno you will need to add another 3 km but the scenery is spectacular and well worth the visit despite still many stairs (325 steps at the end of the route). Know that if you do the full hike to Caldeirão do Inferno you will total 21 km A/R. Which is far from the mileage sold in the guides!!! Performed with two children aged 6 and 13, be careful some crossings are on the mountainside and can be dangerous despite the guards.
Excellent hike made on May 28, 2022 with Charlotte who showed us all the charm of these landscapes, flowers, levada in the safety of the course. Charlotte speaks Portuguese, English, German and French and is very good at managing the group. Thanks.
One of the main tourism agencies of Madeira Island, headquartered in Funchal and with three offices. The staff is very attentive and the staff responds promptly to the questions of customers and interested parties, either by phone or by email. The values practiced are exactly the same as the other operators in the region. The good thing about this Enterprise is that the guides are very good and the pick-up of the guests in the hotels works perfectly and within the scheduled time. I went with the guide named Sarah on five trails/leaves and everything went very well. She's great. Attentive to visitors and explains many curiosities of Madeira Island. I had great moments with this staff and if I visit Madeira again, I will definitely contact Lido Tours. Note 10!
This is a wonderful Levada hike with great views, lots of beautiful flowers and plants, various trees, waterfalls, tunnels, enough time to photograph and marvel. Unfortunately, our guide Gama spoke only Portuguese and English and quite quickly, so he was often difficult to understand - but that was the only small minus of the day. Otherwise absolutely recommended hike and thank you for the beautiful day!
We did this hike independently without going through an agency. We loved the tropical Mood, the many small waterfalls and the encounters of many people from different countries. Perfect arrow. Warning: to favor off season because the trail is world famous and overcrowded! Need to be done again, of course.
Too bad the program was not respected because of the climate. But the agency that organizes it knew in advance that it was not going to make the planned excursion, but instead of canceling we put the group in front of the fait accompli to make another outing that has nothing and troubleshoot other alternatives to compensate. All this is very bad honest, you have to be careful, you have to check the weather conditions before going to all their excursions, otherwise you will be forced to do what arranges for them not to reimburse you.
