Itinerary
Optional visit to the Volcanic Caves and Volcanism Centre. The caves were first reported in 1885 by locals, and opened to the public on October 1st, 1996. They were among the first volcanic caves to be opened to the public in Portugal and may be visited by following an underground route running for over 1,000 m. The height of the caves varies between 5 and 6 metres. At the end of the tour, visitors may access the Volcano Centre, a pavilion offering a range of educational and entertaining audiovisual displays that recreate the geological evolution of the caves, the eruption of a volcano and even a simulation of the birth of the Madeira Islands.
Small village of the North side of the Island located between the mountains and the ocean.
Viewpoint over the village Arco de São Jorge and lunch break.
Picturesque village, easily recognized for its imponent rock formation Penha D'Aguia. Possibility to visit the historic rum factory - Northern Milling Company - the only one in Europe with steam still in operation.
The Pico do Facho Viewpoint offers a wide view over the Machico valley, reaching as far as the island’s central peaks and Ponta de São Lourenço.
Pleasant village with a promenade by the sea which is a nice place for a stroll. You can also visit the São Salvador Church, a gothic manueline style temple. It is one of the churches, outside of Funchal, with a large architectural interest.

An interesting day, we enjoyed it
Excellent tour to the wild and rugged north side of the island. Pick up was prompt from the cable car station in Funchal, but my hotel wasn't offered as a pick up option. Great views and interesting stops with an informative and entertaining guide. Just six people in an eight seater minibus made this a comfortable tour.
North tour, with Hugo.Like it so Much,we went on the West trip too 😀
Excellent tour with our lovely knowledgeable guide Hugo. Stopped at some beautiful places and had plenty of time in each to do what we wanted. Safely driven around some difficult roads. Highly recommended
An excellent tour with the lovely Luis Mateus as our tour guide. He was so informative and gave us a great memorable experience. His knowledge is extensive. The tour look in some beautiful view points and places of interest. There was plenty of comfort stops and a lovely lunch stop. For two years we have booked all our tours through Happy Tours. Thank you to the whole team.
Very good tour with great guide - Tino? Different landscapes and small number of participants made it a really good tour.
Comfortable bus. Guide pleasant and informative. Our tour included a visit to a rum factory. Bus was brand new and electric which gave us a feel good factor due to low emissions.
Too many short stops to see nothing exciting. Got dumped in Santana at a restaurant the driver kept pumping (20 euros each). There was nothing to see in Santana except some fake triangle roofed huts selling tourist tat. We had done the NW tour to Porto Maritz last year which was a lot better. We understood about a third of the commentary because the driver's accent was so awful. He came across a bit obsequious at stops getting out of the bus. I wanted to tell him to leave us alone.
I booked this tour as we were on the Virgin Voyages cruise. The meeting point is a short walk to CR hotel from port. Exceptional service from Hugo tour guide, scenic drive & beautiful places to visit. The euro is 21x our currency & i don't regret the tour price as it was well worth everything we saw & more. I am so glad we booked this tour & we were brought back to cruise ship on time. I hope to visit Madeira again, after this great tour.
We were there for a week and did 2 1/2 tours with Happy Tours. We did, West, North and Nuns Valley. They found us a great hotel, picked us up and drove us to the airport. Super friendly, accommodating and informative. All their recommendations for things to do and places to eat were fantastic. I would not even bother asking or looking elsewhere when I go next time. We arranged everything easily through them. If there was more than 5 stars I would give them that.
Myself and my wife did all four tours, the North, South, East and West. On all of these tours our driver was Lous. His knowledge, sense of humour, and professionalism exceeded all expectations The entire experience from going to Happy Tours office in Funchal and speaking to the agents, booking and the pick up, just great
Luís took us on a wonderful 8 hour driving tour to the north and east side of Madeira. We would do another tour with Luis! He’s a great guide with personal insights and a wonderful life philosophy. Great driver and guide with an excellent facility with languages—our tour was in English and French. We saw beautiful vistas, learned history and visited off-the-main-road locations. It was a very full day but we were energized at the end.
Just returned from an amazing North of the island tour with Hugo. The man is multi talented speaking in French and also English and driving scary roads at the same time. He fas so much island knowledge in his head he was just amazing.Thoroughly enjoyed the whole day never rushed but saw so much. Thank you so much Hugo
I recommend Happy Tours, we booked tours two years ago and rebooked also this year. Very kind guides, careful drivers and skilled narrators.
Have now done all Happy tours full day trips and would thoroughly recommend them. The office staff are always helpful and friendly. Today was the Go North tour ....absolutely wonderful scenery, views and coastline. Regular stops to see the sites. Our guide Nicolao was informative and a pleasure to spend the day with. Last time was Go Southwest with Louis and we thought that could not be beaten but today was even better. I would like to thank them again for making our stays in Madeira even more enjoyable
This was my 3rd time in Madeira and by far the best tour company I have used. I strongly recommend that you use them. The guide Luis was very knowledgeable and accommodating, I will use them again.
Hugo guided us not only in the north of Madeira but also gave us a lot of background information about the culture, the nature, the history etc. Hé did this in good English and with humor. Hé drives in a very safe manner. A top performance.
I enjoyed the tour of the North Coast of Madeira. The island is volcanic and there are many tunnels through the mountains for the cars to drive through. We visited Engenhos do Norte, a steam-powered sugar cane distillery. There is a lot of sugar cane that grows on the island, which the distillery turns into rum. I enjoyed the various viewpoints. Our last stop was Santa Cruz. The São Salvador Church had a chapel with Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. This was a lovely way to see the North Coast.
This is our second time using happy tours and we have been very pleased with the company. Today our tour guide was Luis (the son) who gave us an excellent tour. He was very knowledgeable, his English was excellent and he showed a true love for his country. The North of the island is truly beautiful and we went to many of the small towns and villages along the coast. Luis entertained us all day with stories and legends of the island and the stops were well planned. I would really recommend this tour if you want to see the beauty of the island away from the main tourist areas.
We booked this tour a little last minute, wanted something to do on a particular day and our options/ companies by that time were a little limited and we were happy to go with whatever we could find. Pick up etc was all fine, small minibus to seat around 17 of us, think there were a couple of spare seats on the day we went. We hadn't realised before we booked that the lava tubes have been closed now for 2 years due to Covid (we'd obviously picked up an old leaflet, apparently the company were waiting on new ones) so this stop on the tour (which originally took up 90 mins or so from memory) no longer happens. We thoroughly enjoyed getting out and about to see other areas of the island, the scenery driving round is absolutely stunning. There were a number of stops at small villages and viewpoints, generally involving a quick 'on and off' the bus for a bit of a wander and to take photos. There was a longer stop for lunch before we started to make our way back to the Funchal area. The commentary on the bus, we both felt, was fairly minimal, covered the basics. It felt a little like the driver was just going through the motions. Due to the weather, the last stop was understandably kept fairly short (it was pouring down), and we were back home at 3:30. Not that the lava tubes were a must see for us, it just felt like that was a fairly big point of the tour which was then followed by a drive around the coast with a few stops along the way. It doesn't feel as though the tour has been rejigged at all in light of the closure and is just missing a bit of something..... So, in short, we did enjoy our day out, breath taking scenery around every bend. Were we wowed by the tour itself? Probably not, but it was generally okay.
Ugo was a fantastic guide. So knowledgeable about Madeira and so interesting to listen to, as well as being a great driver. This tour is excellent value with the right amount of stops and different locations to other operators I've done previously, ie Santa Cruz. I took the opportunity to see the surrounding area at lunch time, with no pressure to have lunch at suggested restaurant and again some great pictures taken whilst others did the rum factory tasting and short tour. 2 great couples so a small group, all in all a wonderful way to spend my last day in Madeira for a few months.
Amazing! I recommend this tour a thousand times!!! And a special congratulations to collaborator Luis who made our tour. He totally made a difference with his attention and concern and at the same time with his passion in explaining how beautiful the wood island is. Thank you Luis!
Authentic excursion, not touristic, discovery of beautiful mountain corners under the mist, it was beautiful, and guide Hugo shares his love of the island👍
Air conditioning in the cart turned off.The driver only turned on the ventilation, even after he was asked to turn on the air conditioning (car without windows to ventilate with 17 people) We walk back and forth to give bullshit to the driver's friend Lunch in a restaurant of the driver's choice, off the tour route, in the middle of nothing and still above with the owner and only employee of the super unpleasant restaurant I filed a complaint to an agency employee who had a super incorrect attitude, offering phrases like "What do you want me to do to you? It's normal to want to help the people of the earth. It's curious that only you complained" I know that the other couple of Portuguese also complained and I feel a shame for promoting Portuguese tourism in this way.
