Itinerary
The first stop of the tour is the not so famous but very beautiful Miradouro do Paradao. From this viewpoint you will see Funchal from above as well as the famous Nun´s Valley. It´s usually very quiet up here and very much "off the beaten path"
Madeira´s third highest peak. We try to arrive here early, before the crowds so we can best enjoy the amazing views, above the clouds hopefully! We don´t like giving set times but usually spend somewhere around 30 to 45 minutes up here which is usually enough to get to see the best sights.
Ribeiro Frio is well known for the rainbow trout farm. We drive by the large crowds and escape the tourist traps.
We make our way off-road and off the beaten path to Santana, one of Madeira´s most famous villages. Here we will see the traditional A-frame houses and stop at an authentic house to see how people use to live in this shantytown of Madeira. Next is Lunch at the famous Quinta do Furao restaurant with the best lunch in Santana, with great value and an incredible view!
After lunch we stop at one of our favourite viewpoints on the North East of the island to see privileged views of the North East coast.
A stop is in order at the the small village of Porto Da Cruz, well known for it´s history in sugar and rum. We make a stop at the famous rum factory and of course try some of the best rum in the world!
Lastly we explore Ponta de Sao Lourenço, the most easterly peninsular on the island known for its magnificent volcanic rock formations and colours.
The final stop on our east tour to see the peninsular in all it´s glory!

We had a wonderful day experiencing the north east of the island. I have done other jeep tours and this was the best. The day from start to finish was so informative and fun. It felt like a day out with mates. We visited authentic local places, avoided the crowds and enjoyed the spectacular scenery.
Brilliant experience at good value for money. Our guide Tiago was obviously very proud of his island and enthusiastic to show us. We saw parts of the island we would never have reached with lots of local knowledge about the flora, fauna and geography. A short Levada walk, leisurely lunch and visit to the rum distillery were all part of the day.
Tiago was an amazing guide. He knew so much about the island and took us to several less touristy locations. His love for the island was infectious; just a super nice, all around good person.
We had a fantastic experience. Tiago was an excellent guide — extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely passionate about the island. He took us to hidden and lesser-known parts of Madeira, and shared lots of useful information, local tips, and interesting insights along the way. We would highly recommend that tour and Tiago to anyone looking to discover the authentic side of Madeira!
We booked on to the tour having read the itinerary (to be honest, we debated whether to do the east or west tour, and having never visited Madeira before, both appealed). We were picked up on the day by our guide Tiago and found that the other 3 people on the tour were already present. We had a fantastic day exploring the north and east of the island. Tiago's "insider knowledge" and evident passion for his homeland, its people and its way of life, completely made the tour come to life. We didn't have time to do the west tour as well, so a return visit is most definitely on the cards.
Great tour. Vitor was a great guide..
Fabio is absolutely fantastic guide with great knowledge of the island. Highly recommended.
Hit the Road Madeira has it all! Convenient pick up and drop off, Knowledgable tour guides dedicated to you having the ultimate experience, Safe driving with capable vehicles, Local expertise and insights Ability to ask questions, hear stories and crack jokes all day. We took the West tour . . . liked it so much we also took the East tour. Our guides, Omar and Tiago, were easy to talk to and flexible. They each showed us a good mix of the best sites the island has to offer. Both clearly love their home and want any visitors to love it as well!
Wonderful tour! Our guide, Vitor was excellent and made the day full of interesting stories and discoveries around the East side of Madeira. He took us on many roads that were only accessible by 4x4 and avoided most of the crowds to see some of the hidden beauty of the island. Great stops for drinks, lunch and a bit of exploring. We also had a fun interesting group of people from the UK, Romania and us from the US. My only one caution is that the Land Rover seats 6 (plus driver) and since we were the last to be picked up at our hotel, we ended up in the way back of the vehicle in the 2 seats that face each other. If you have any back issues or are taller than 5’7”, it’s a bit uncomfortable. Luckily, we rotated so we only had to sit there for the beginning of the trip. Despite this, I would still highly recommend the tour, but be aware. It is still SO much better than one of those large minibuses.
This was an excellent tour and a great way to experience Madeira. Tiego was knowledgeable and friendly, the scenery was spectacular, and the itinerary was well planned with plenty of time at each stop. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the island.
We are visiting Madeira for the first time for a week and decided to choose a couple of tours which would give us a good idea of the island. I am not a big fan of the big bus tours and normally do private trips, so when I found Hit The Road and saw that they have a max capacity of 6 I thought this was a good alternative! After checking out their TikTok and YouTube I booked both the east and west tour. I literally cannot explain how great our guide Fabio was, he is truly is an asset to your company! He was very knowledgable and so friendly! We managed to see a lot of the island and gives you an idea of what else is out there as many places were pointed out and recommended. Never at any point did we go anywhere that was over crowded, we always got to experience each place we went to without it being packed! They clearly know what time is best to visit each place and I am extremely grateful as I was worried that some areas would be too busy for my anxiety. So do not hesitate to book these tours and if you can request Fabio I would!! Thank you so much for making our holiday that little bit extra magical and I will definitely be back and hope to see you again :)
We had a brilliant time on this tour. Our guide Tiago was amazing - he was really knowledgeable and passionate about the island, and went out of his way to show us some hidden gems as well as some of the more popular highlights. The scenery was stunning, and it felt like we packed lots into the day - we made lots of short stops and had a longer break for a delicious lunch in a beautiful spot organized by Tiago. We were combined with two other couples which was a nice group size, we all took turns sitting in the front and back - even the small seats in the back of the jeep were surprisingly comfy! 100% recommended Hit The Road and Tiago :)
Beautiful day in out in the hills. Our tour guide Tiago was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about the local environment
Our driver Fabio was magnificent under pressure from a crying 8 month old He adapted to suit the family
We met Tiago and exactly the time which was designated, met by a friendly jolly guide Tiago made our small group feel comfortable and explained the day to us He took us to all the spots we wanted to see and some surprises All in all it was a wonderful tour and Tiago absolutely knows his wonderful home and knows all the history,it wasn’t boring,it was exciting and interest Thanks Tiago !!
Had a great day with Jeff, a very knowledgeable and funny guide. Lots of stops for photos. Met a lovely bunch of people on the trip. Would book Hit the Road Madeira again for another jeep tour. Would recommend.
Great fun day with Jeff. Jeff shared a lot of information about the island, the places we visited, good pace, lots of stops to stretch our legs . Would definitely book it again with them
This was our first trip to Madeira and we wanted to experience all the hi-lites of the island without renting a car. We had followed Hit The Road Madeira on Instagram for the last 2 years and were so impressed we decided to book some tours with them. Ended up booking 5! East Coast, West Coast, Espetada (so delicious and fun), Sunrise, Sunset…..and the best traditional poncha! Excellent communication before each tour and very accessible if you have questions. Their crew of tour guides are all so professional and so enjoyable to spend time with. They are well versed on the history and culture of this beautiful island and they included remote spots, views and local surprises that the average tourist would never find. We were fortunate enough to meet Fabio (twice), Wilson, Hugo and Fernando. Hats off to all of them. So much fun and laughter…..they were friends by the end of the tour. Thanks to Jeff and his team for making our Madeira trip unforgettable! If you are planning any tours, we highly recommend this company.
We booked the tour on the recommendation of a local walking tour guide, and were delighted that we did so. Wilson, our driver and guide, picked us up from our hotel right on time in his trusty Land Rover Discovery. There was only one other person with the two of us, and he turned out to be great company, and a pleasure to do the tour with. Wilson is a very personable young man with excellent knowledge of Madeira and a very pleasant manner. He took us to some great viewpoints away from the crowds, where we could admire the scenery and take photographs without being rushed. He described various plants and other aspects/points of interest along the way, which made the tour more enjoyable and informative. We were able to walk along a seafront with great views, and also enjoyed a short levada walk. We visited a very interesting authentic traditional house in Santana which is 241 years old. Wilson took us to a sugarcane rum factory, and later to a great restaurant for lunch. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit Pico de Arieiro on account of the weather conditions, so will have to leave that experience for another day. All in all, a very enjoyable tour indeed.
Great trip despite the rain, including a really tasty lunch.
Absolutely great trip. The driver, Vitor, was not only a great guide but he also was very attentive to us. Great views, great places, great experiences.
This was a very nice small group tour of five. Our guide, Wilson, spoke very well and gave great information on the sites. The Mountain View’s were amazing as well as the countryside. The off roading took us to areas you would never see on your own. We stopped at a restaurants high above with views of the ocean that served delicious espertada (steak bites). This had a relaxed paced with ability to walk on a few easy trails. Highly recommend.
We had an amazing day & Fabio was a brilliant guide, so warm, knowledgable & enthusiastic! So many highlights, seeing Pico do Arieiro in the morning sunshine, getting to visit a traditional Madeiran casa de colmo that’s still part of a family farm, all the many beautiful viewpoints, plus a tasty Prego for lunch and ending with a traditional Poncha. Cheers Fabio, looking forward to coming back and booking the trip to the West!
We gave up on private tours years ago. But after watching Jeff and learning about Hit the Road Madeira we decided to try again we were NOT disappointed.
Hugo was a brilliant and very experienced host to kick off our travels in Maderia Portugal. He designed the day to showcase the highlights of the island, while keeping the day slow and steady to our place. Taking us to more local and lest busy spots, making the day flow wonderfully. Really appreciate the personalised and friendly experience. Highly recommended for all travel types.
I really enjoyed this day. There were only three of us in the Jeep so it was very comfortable. We had personal service. Good thing I like fast is that it was flexible. We could stay as long as we want or move on. There was a real variety of stops and we had a great place for lunch and even stopped at a little local bar for Poncha. Fabio was a fountain of good information and kept her running commentary going. He was obliging and polite and flexible. This trip cost a little bit more than some of the other others, but in my view it as well worth it
Fantastic tour despite the weather! Our guide, Tiago, was energetic and extremely knowledgable; his family having lived in the region we were visiting for many generations. He took us to places off the beaten path and showed us “his”island. The tour lived up to all expectations and we highly recommend it!
Despite the storm and legal requirement not to enter the mountain roads Fabio adapted the tour to create a bespoke and unique experience, particularly visiting a real Madeiran santana house away from the tourist trail and a fabulous lunch over a wood fire in a fabulous setting. Memeries were made
We had a great time with our guide Wilson. He was very helpful, patient, and showed us plenty of options so we could enjoy our day despite the weather. Local recommendations for eating were also super good! Very nice trip <3
We toured the east of the island with a group of other people driven by an excellent and knowledgable guide, Vitor. We visited numerous sites including Ponta de Sao Lourenco, Machico, Santa Cruz, a local rum distillery (very tasty) and lunch at an excellent restaurant in Sao Jorge. A really enjoyable day and I would recommend this company.
Was the highlight of my trip, the tour guide was very friendly and helpful showing us lots of different places that one would not have seen,he was a safe driver on the steep slopes would highly recommended this company
These guys are the best. They offer great tours and are flexible. In our case, it was raining and cloudy, so we did not go up the highest peak, where we would not have been able to see anything. Instead, we stayed at lower levels and saw many other sites on the Island. The guides were knowledgeable about the island's flora, fauna, and history. We did the East.
Fabio the best! We love the beautiful sites he took to! Non touristy! Fabio very knowledgeable of the island! We had great time! Fabio also took us to a very good restaurant for lunch! We didn’t feel like we were on an average tour! Great tour! Great island! Very friendly people!
Really enjoyable day, touring the east of the island in a classic 4 x 4. Vitor was very knowledgeable and knew all the short cuts and interesting roads. We were joined by a lovely couple from Holland and enjoyed an authentic Madeira lunch. The short walk after lunch was not for the faint hearted but enjoyable when we got to the bottom!! Overall I would definitely recommend this trip. A big thank you to Vitor
Definitely one of the best tours we have ever done. Experencing Maderia through the eyes of a local helped us fall in love with the - either that, or the local Poncha! Thank you Tiago for being such a wonderful guide, and for going above and beyond for us, to have a truly remarkable experience. Looking forward to our next trip already. Sharon and Mark
We had a fantastic experience with Hit The Road and our local guide Vítor. We left all the planning of our private Jeep tour in his hands, and he did an amazing job. He was incredibly informative and tirelessly answered all our questions – and we had loads! The tour itself was wonderfully adventurous, taking us along extremely steep roads, through beautiful places, and to great spots for food and drinks. We felt like we got to see the real Madeira with a local friend rather than just a standard tour. It was a brilliant day from start to finish. Highly recommended!
Fabio was a nice guide. Knows everything about the island and very knowledgable person. Really loves madeira and even we encountered his father driving in the highway. The plan as the booking shows was not followed and Fabio wanted just to avoid crowded places, but at the end was a very nice experience. Please notice that all the jeep tours you will find they will at some point lead you to a restaurant, sometimes far without anyother option nearby to choose. So if you have specific tastes, bring food or check before booking. Took us to a place where the drink was so nice, but 200ml only and very expensive for just icescreen shake. 5 stars for Fabio, and 4 overall.
As tourists not used to steep, winding mountain roads, we were so grateful for the incredible guides, Vitor and Wilson, at Hit the Road Madeira. Their confident and skilled driving allowed us to relax completely and enjoy the journey taking us to places we never could have reached on our own. We booked both the East Side and West Side tours. The scenery was spectacular, the stops were thoughtfully chosen, and the guides shared fascinating stories and insights that brought Madeira’s landscapes and culture to life. For anyone thinking of exploring Madeira, we can’t recommend Hit the Road Madeira highly enough. Their professionalism, warmth, and genuine love for the island made our experience truly special.
An interesting and enjoyable trip with Wilson our guide. Relaxed pace with great variety of places visited. Would recommend trip to others.
We had an amazing time only made better by our guide Wilson. The stops were all incredible and the best way to see this part of the island. Of course we got preferential parking and easy access but we also got to see what the average tourist would miss, like walking into 1 of only 5 original Santana homes with a tour and stories from the owner. Do not miss this adventure and don’t even think about booking with anyone other than Hit The Road Madeira and Wilson.
Great trip. Wilson was a good driver and answered all of our questions. Pity the weather was not better on the highest point of our journey.
Great day out visiting the east of Maderia. Our Guide/Driver was Wilson who was great. Very friendly and helpful showing us all the amazing sights, great driver managing the winding mountain roads. Stopped at a lovely restaurant with views across the sea. A great selection of main meals plus sandwiches so not going to cost a fortune. The weather was fantastic so we had amazing views. Definitely recommend.
Was a fun trip through east side of Madeira. Lots of joking, lots of great views and not that much of crowds as most crowded places where avoided or we where there before others.
Hit the Road Maderia East Jeep tour with Wilson the guide was amazing. Pick up & drop off was right out of my entrance. The group was small 5 people - allowing for great conversations & observations by Wilson. Expert driving on the roads. Packed a lot in on this tour. Excellent value and a great time! Highly recommend!
Wilson was the best!!! Had an amazing time experiencing the island on this tour with such a knowledgeable guide who made our first full day in Madeira one of the best days ever. Thank you!!
We really loved the whole tour. Along the way we were given great explanations about Madeira’s culture and history, both during the ride and at each stop. The rum tasting was a highlight, and we had plenty of time to explore everywhere without feeling rushed. Lunch at a local restaurant with an incredible ocean view from the cliff was unforgettable. A special thanks to Wilson, one of the friendliest and most chilled tour guides I’ve ever met. He explained everything in detail and kept the atmosphere relaxed. Even when we got stuck in traffic in Funchal on the way back, and my partner and I ended up being the last to be dropped off, Wilson made it easier with good conversation. To be fair, we probably made it easier for him too with our chat, so everyone won in the end! As a couple visiting Madeira, this tour gave us a great feel for island life, and meeting an island man like Wilson made it all the more authentic. Highly recommend.
We had a wonderful day with Wilson and 4 other passengers. We learnt plenty, had some lovely stopping points for the most amazing views. A great lunch spot out of the way of normal tourist route. Went off road through the forest, great fun. We'd highly recommend using Hit The Road.
Just done east 4x4 tour with Tiago and what a day it as been its must do for everybody. Also make sure u try every poncha on stop on way back in local bar 👌
Amazing experience that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to see a lot in a short amount of time. Our guide, Vitor, was fantastic. Such a great day!
