Itinerary
In a labyrinth that once comprised more than 20,000 corridors, an experienced guide takes you underground to see the names and drawings of people who worked here every day a few hundred years ago. Did you know that with a capacity of 50,000 people,, the expansice cave network was able to provide shelter for many of Maastricht’s residents during the Second World War. An evacuation area with electric lighting, a public address system, a bakery, toilets, chapels, a small hospital, water pumps, and many more facilities were all constructed underground, though never put into full use. Remnants of them can still be seen.

Excellent tour. Guide, Paul, was highly knowledgeable about the caves from their history as well as from personal experience as child growing up in the area. He took time to answer questions regarding history and art within the caves. Highly recommend this tour for those with limited knowledge of Maastricht.
Absolutely fabulous tour! Our guide was friendly, hilarious and knowledgeable. Absolutely would love to come back and try Some other tours!
Great experience, nice history, unexpected paintings, easy walk. Nice and cool inside the caves and a great tourguide called Wim, who as a child played in the caves
This is a very unique experience. Very enjoyable and full of history. The “caves” are really more like tunnels but it’s the history behind how and why they were made and why they are there that was fascinating. Literally seeing history on the walls was pretty amazing.
The tour was good. The caves/tunnels have a long history and are worth seeing. Our guide Theo is a local and he enlightened us with his first hand knowledge of the locality and experiences at the tunnel when he was young, as also his knowledge of the history of the tunnels. I would suggest that the signage regarding the tour be shifted to the entrance to the hotel, so that the customers have instant information of the meeting point.
Amazing site, full of history. Paul was a great guide: very knowledgeable and funny. A must see while in Maastricht!
Willy was fun and knowledgeable. He made the trip very worthwhile!
The brilliant bright and charismatic Willy, lead us fearlessly through the fascinating cave complex, on one of the most memorable experiences ever! An expert in the history of the caves, he was fun as well as funny, and certainly I would recommend him, and well this wonderful tour to anyone, especially adventurers of all ages! Thank you Willy!! five stars +
An amazing experience, very knowledgeable guide and very informative. Also very reasonably priced. The time went very quickly but it was jam packed with history absolutely fantastic.
Great tour with a knowledgable guide on kick scooters. Very nice and fun time, also very great to end at the terrace with a cold beverage etc.
Few days ago we enjoyed this tour which you have to book online in advance. Unfortunate the restaurant was closed because of shortage of staff. And we were too early for the tour but we could change the tour via whatsapp our tickets for an earlier tour. The tour started by the restaurant and we walke few minutes to the entrance with the guid and group. The guide Cindy was a very nice person en cheerful. She told so many nice and interesting stories. It is quite cold in the cave and after thirty minutes it really gets cold. A light jacket in the summer can be nice inside. And the caves are high which gave me no claustrophobic feeling. Was really a great tour and 100procent worth the money. Shout out to Cindy who was a great guide and very friendly. We felt really save with her as a guide.
The third time I did one of the tours in the quarries “below” Maastricht. Always recommended to do with guests.
The guide had excellent knowledge of the caves and kept it very interesting.
Kelly was an excellent guide. She knew her way around, explained how the caverns were formed, had much historical information, and shared many back stories of the sketches and carvings in the cave. Plus, she had a very pleasant and positive way of relating them.
This was among one of my favorite things that we did while we were in maastrict! Our guide was very informative and engaging. One thing that I would recommend to anyone considering this to her is appropriate shoes for a small hike and a lot of walking once you’re in the caves, I also recommend bringing a sweat sweatshirt because it is a bit chilly inside the caves.
Excellent day out very hot day great relief to go inside for lovely drop in temp to 10c
The tour was really nice. Paul, our guide, was star of the show. Fully recommended for anyone visiting Maastricht.
We booked this last minute on the way to Maastricht having no idea what was in store and it was amazing! Gilbert took us around and showed us his favourite drawings and the caves themselves were huge and filled with hundreds of years of history! He took us around and told us many fascinating stories that took place in the caves, joked around with us and overall we had a brilliant time! Definitely going to do it again when we bring the family.
Great experience. The guide was very entertaining and knowledgeable. An hour is an enough time to get a bit of history.
A stunning experience to walk through this underground limestone quarry. You see century-old traces of work and equally old traces of visitors, i.e. graffiti. Wim, our guide, has a profound knowledge, not only of the mining / stone-breaking activities but also of the geological processes and historical events. Is literally a cool experience: 11°C constantly. You better do this on a very hot day. However, it also works well at rainy conditions as there is quite a roof above your head😉
This tunnel tour was great. The tour guide was informative, answered questions, and very personable. I am a history guy and I really enjoyed it. Bring a jacket as it is about 11C/52F ish. Definitely recommend! Bring sturdy shoes.
Willy was the perfect tour guide - knowledgeable und very funny. The caves are outstanding and the stories our guide told us were fascinating. Full ***** recommendation! P.S. Make sure to bring a jacket. It is 11° Celcius all year long
Fantastic guide and a really interesting tour in a nice educational and funny way
Wow! This tour was fantastic! Our tour guide Gerry was extremely knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. This activity is very affordable at around $10 per ticket and took a little over one hour. The instructions in the ticket email were extremely detailed on where to meet. The "caves" get cool, so bring a jacket! Tour size was intimate and we completed the tour easily with my son in a hiking backpack and my disabled father. This is a great tour rich with history and I cannot recommend it enough!
Guides English skills are somewhat limited. Also, she needs to talk a little bit more about the history of the city.
The tour of Zonnebergy Caves was an amazing experience. Our guide was so knowledgeable about the caves, and he led the tour with a welcoming, affable manner. The experience was incredible! Highly recommended!
Fantastic tour with lots of history. Mind blowing in its size and how far back in time they go. Bring a light coat or sweatshirt as it get chilly. Highly recommend.
We thoroughly enjoyed the tour with Paul; his knowledge is phenomenal, and how he navigates the underground route so incredibly well with all those tunnels remains a mystery to us. We loved the drawings, the stories, and the darkness. Thank you for this experience.
We had a fantastic tour. The guide was experienced and professional, sharing interesting stories and facts with humor. Impressive, we enjoyed it. Next time, we want to do the scooter tour!
Nice tour through the caves with an enthusiastic guide who really involved the children.
Very interesting and worth seeing Tour with dedication Absolutely recommended
Wonderful to hear how in the past in the mountain marl was extracted by a guide who knows a lot about the past and even longer ago
Super fun and beautiful experience with good and enthusiastic explanation from guide Ruud.
Beautiful educational tour! Enthusiastic guide who told a clear story about the history of these caves!
A very friendly lady guided us patiently and in an exciting way through the underground labyrinth - she was sensitive to the children's needs and answered everything. I found it impressive and learned a lot. Was very worthwhile
Absolute recommendation! Even my son, who is at the "everything is boring" age, was very fascinated by the tunnels and the stories about them. And the "old folks" also learned a lot 😉
The guide (Gilbert) knew a lot about the history of the caves and always knew the answer to our questions.
Special tour with many fun surprises and interesting facts. From 17th-century graffiti to 19th-century advertisements and visual arts to a 20th-century war shelter
impressive canyon system, we were happy with the experienced guide. It is remarkable how humanity accomplished such a huge task without electric tools.
A fantastic walk through the corridors guided by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide! Learned a lot about the history of marl and its use throughout the centuries.
A wonderful experience to walk here with a guide instead of in the past as a rogue secretly going into the caves without realizing the danger. Now guide Regina has shown us details that you would otherwise simply miss.
Excellent guide, who could tell about the caves in a captivating way. The history of the caves is impressive.
A really nice tour, it has something exciting about it and is something you have to experience. Willy was a very good guide
The tour was very professional and very informative. It was very entertaining and informative. It was a lot of fun.
Very interesting, many details, nice tour guide.
A fun tour with a nice guide who knew a lot to tell about the mine and shared fun facts about the history.
Great experience, expert guide who told and explained things well. Nice to have seen and done once. It is a gigantic tunnel complex where you only see a small part, and even then you are walking underground for a good hour.
We had a super nice guide who had a lot of knowledge and passion for the caves. She could answer all the questions in detail and it was a good tour.
What a super fun and educational experience. On the step through the gang system! Led by Cindy, we and our friends took a tour of the halls. Never knew what it was like in the past. A recommendation!! Book Cindy and you will find out everything.
