This experience was really interesting and lots of fun. Our host picked us up from hotel and introduced us to the bamboo experience team. We were provided with quite a bit of information at first, about Lao culture and bamboo. We then had a go at weaving a coaster with bamboo. Lots of fun. Then onto the cooking part of the experience. This was brilliant as our guide helped us prepare several dishes. Very tasty. After lunch we had a go at some dance moves before being taken back to our hotel. As a small group tour this was very personal and this added to the enjoyment. Thanks to all the bamboo experience team. Well done.
Really enjoyable time with extremely friendly guide and staff and informative talk on bamboo and its many uses... practical task in creating a bamboo coaster (a lot harder than it looked but guys on hand to help us out, with encouragement ).Great outdoor cooking lesson and some very tasty food produced, especially the marinated fish in banana leaf). Stunning views from a beautiful bamboo house. Peaceful morning!! Finished off with a bit of dancing between long bamboo sticks.
Such a wholesome and professional experience! Loved it so much! They did such a great job and are such sweet people. I can really recommend it! Also the pickup worked perfectly
We had alovely morning here. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and it was a great learning experience delivered in a fun way. The food we cooked was fresh and tasty., with sticky rice made in the traditional way and steamed fish cooked in banana leaves. Even made our own little coasters to bring home. Thoroughly recommend
The whole experience was amazing, the family were so lovely and we learnt so much, a must do if you are in Luang Prabang!!!
This was really fun! I recommend you go and take part in all the bamboo associated activities. There was cooking, drinking, weaving and dancing!
It was a great experience. I really enjoyed the bamboo weaving. It was actually hard! I would definitely do it again
A great experience, learning so much about bamboo. Fun activities. Weaving a coaster and then a cooking class. The variety of food was so good. Yum
This was a great thing to do in Luang Prabang. We learned so much about the importance of bamboo to the Lao people and the myriad of uses it has for them. The weaving was fun and the cooking class is probably the best one we’ve done. Traditional food cooked my traditional methods and everything was delicious. Somsay and his team have put together a really entertaining experience. Thanks so much!
The people running the tour were very knowledgeable and friendly. I really enjoyed the cooking class and would’ve liked to have done a little bit more of that.
We thoroughly enjoyed the various activities included in the Bamboo Experience. We learned a lot and laughed a lot, (especially at ourselves) in this very participatory outing. It also gave us a chance to get away from the crowds and enjoy the peaceful nearby countryside.
Breathing in the surrounding rice fields and peaceful energy of the school constructed with bamboo made it very special and uplifting! As a US solo woman traveler it was refreshing to be a part of a small group; a delightful couple from Australia:) I loved the Guide he infused playfulness into the experience as he explained the history of Laos and styles of weaving and basketry. He even went the extra mile with guiding us patiently with how it’s done! The cooking part with the bamboo shoots was so delicious and reminded me of the value of bamboo as a nutritional and renewable, resource to replace all the plastics! (Why not???) The mung musician and dancer was the star of the show! Such a gorgeous representation of Laos and the mung community with all its wonderful contributions!! Cup Chai lye lye!!(Thank you very much!!!)
An interesting diversion from sight-seeing learning how to cook sticky- rice and weave bamboo. OK, we only made place mats but were given a frog to take way. Who knew you could cook so many dishes? Fortunately our efforts were supplemented by the resident cook.
I had a great morning here learning all about the different ways they use bamboo in Laos. We then did bamboo weaving and made a little coaster each. I started to notice how much bamboo (and the technique we were taught) was used all around Laos. We then had a cooking class which was great, the food was the best I’ve had on my travels so far, lots to try. I would really recommend this activity to anyone.
This tour was a lot of fun & very informative. Our tour guides were all very knowledgeable & friendly. All phases of the tour — the explanation about all the ways bamboo is used, weaving the bamboo coasters, preparation of rice, cooking (& eating), & musical performances — were very well done. Highly recommended.
Stunning experience giving us an insight into traditional daily life in the villages. The uses of bamboo were incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed the Bamboo weaving taking home a lovely coaster as a great souvenir. The cooking class was phenomenal and the food created was some of the best food we’ve had on our trip throughout Asia so far. Highly recommend this experience to anyone wanting a beautiful cultural experience.
This was an amazing experience! All the staff were so friendly and I had such a great time! My favourite thing I have done so far in Laos!! Highly recommend!
This is a delightful way to enrich your experience of Laos when you are in Luang Prabang. It is a chance to learn about traditional Lao culture through cooking and bamboo weaving. You can read guidebooks to Laos before you go to try to be a thoughtful traveler, but the Bamboo Experience gives you a direct, hands on way to experience the culture and the food that is far better than anything in a book. And it is delicious and fun.
Amazing experience - the baci ceremony was a true highlight, and it was amazing to learn so much about Laotian culture in a day. Everyone involved within the tour was also very knowledgeable and exuberant - just fantastic overall!
Very interesting morning. Exactly as described on line. Prompt hotel pick up. Delicious lunch which we helped prepare. Friendly people.
Fabulous morning learning about bamboo with lots of hands on experience. Great cooking class again very hands on which resulted in an amazing lunch. Lovely guide. Defo recommend
My mom and I had a really great day with the bamboo experience and we’re so happy we decided to do the tour. The communication with Somsay was very smooth and quick. We Pick up was on time and comfortable and we were pleased to see that it was a small group of five in total. When we arrived, we were welcomed with a cup of green tea. Somsay then told us about bamboo and how it’s used in Laos, we also got to see a wide range of different products. After the introduction we saw how they make sticky rice and got to try preparing the rice with a massive mortar and pestle, as well as winnowing. Later we observed how they prepare the bamboo and tried our hand at bamboo weaving. We also did a lovely mini-cooking class, tried homemade banana whiskey and saw a spectacular performance with the traditional Hmong bamboo instrument! I even got to try the instrument and bamboo dancing! A tasty lunch is included as well. The whole crew is super friendly, fun and welcoming. It was fun and felt very authentic. By doing this tour you will support locals, as the money is split between everyone involved. I would highly recommend doing this tour!
Check out my earlier rave review ! A professional seamless family operation warm-hearted snd personal. I learnt a lot and enjoyed the morning .
The location is lovely, leafy and peaceful overlooking a large rice field and mountains The wooden buildings attractive and traditional The various demonstrations packed with fascinating information, ending with a charming Hmong musical item! Bamboo workshop was hilarious - and cooking workshop enlightening team work. The lunch quite superb ! Also we loved the morning market tour ably guided by our affable host. This is a professional family hospitality operation thoroughly enjoyed by six international Visitors! Chop chay! Thank You ( August 2023)
This experience was fantastic! Somsay takes you to his house where he shares a lot of information about life in Laos and bamboo. A master weaver from the village joined us to show us (with little english, massive smiles and endless paitience) how to weave a coaster - after this experience you will have an incredible appreciation for all the bamboo weaved items you see. The ad description doesnt do the cooking part of the day justice - we had an incredible meal with each course including bamboo of some sort, but each delicious in their own right (the fried bamboo shoots stuffed with pork were a winner in our group). The day rounded out with a local musician playing a local instrument. All in all, an incredible experience that taught us a lot about Laos in a really authentic way!
This is a really enjoyable, informative, memorable way to spend half a day in Luang Prabang . Fun and interesting for any age, the day is led by locals who are passionate and knowledgeable about the myriad of uses that bamboo has, be that for food, construction, tools, furniture, crafts. Everything can be used, it’s a wonder- eco product! Hands on involvement, weaving, cooking, chatting, music . Thoroughly worth supporting this lovely team of local people who are so proud of their culture - and you get to have a great day and eat fab food as well!
Excellent activities, very well presented, cooking class was easy to participate or sit back and enjoy, delicious lunch, bamboo weaving was a wonderful activity and to top it all off—music. Perfect day!
Kids friendly activity in Luang Prabang! Highly recommendable. Incredible and authentic moment. We sincerely enjoyed every minute of The Bamboo Experience - bamboo weaving and Cooking class. Somsay and his family and neighbours are incredibly nice, shiny, patient and passionate. They hosted us, and made us play, cook, weave, eat bamboo. Everything in their house is in bamboo, they explained to us all the uses they make of the bamboo and the importance of this plant in the daily life of asian people. They are very skilly and were so nice with our 2 kids. We are so grateful for this day. We will remember this activity for ever. It is really worth it.
The day started at 8AM and we got picked up at the hotel and we got dropped off at the hotel at about 2PM. The people working there were so kind and gunny! We could joke around together the whole day! We learned a lot about the Bamboo tools that the locals are using and could weave our own coaster. Also the weaving-Master showed us how he can weave cute bamboo-animals. The day included also a cooking class where we used a lot of bamboo in every dish. We ate so much good food! In the end a local musician joined us and showed us some local dancing while he played an instrument made out of bamboo. We could try playing the instrument as well and got introduced to the bamboo dance. We had a great day and for me it was one of the best experiences I had while traveling!
This was so good!! An authentic and immersive experience that really captures the Laos way of life. The host spoke English very well and was an absolute delight, the bamboo weaving was so much fun, and the cooking class was great. The food at the end was delicious too. I highly recommend this to anyone. Well worth the money!
So many people travel to a country to see exactly what life is really like somewhere but just occupy the surface. Well here is your chance: I got an opportunity to visit the guide Somsay's and his family at their house. His mother, Mae Phat, taught me how to bargain in the market and select the ingredients. When we arrived at his house which I was shuttled to, I got to learn how to craft things from bamboo with his uncle. We cooked multiple dishes with his mother and use new ingredients like eggplant berries and sawtooth coriander. We cooked stuffed bamboo shoots and fish wrapped in banana leaves. I got to learn how to cook Laotian spice pastes with pickled bamboo. Everything is prepared outside over coals in a bamboo hut. After we ate lunch there was a performance of a bamboo instrument together with a dance from Yeah Xiong Her a local expert. Such a range of activities I think I need a nap. More than just a set of skills I felt like I was an invited guest rather than just a customer. Everything here is themed around bamboo which by the end you realise how important it is for all aspects of Laotian life. Would heartily recommend to anyone and everyone thinking of going. There was a week's worth of activities done in a single day!
The workshop includes transportation from and back to our hotel. A thumbs-up to the interesting program lined up on the day. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable in sharing the tradition and culture of Laos related to bamboo. Surprisingly, they are able to converse in rather good English. We enjoyed the activities especially the crossbow shooting practice, and not forgetting the yummy dishes served during lunch. It is a good experience for family of all ages. Last but not the least, thank you for offering to send my son to the hospital when he was unwell during the workshop. We appreciate the nice gesture from Somsay and staff.
Very positive travel experience around bamboo in a bucolic setting with different workshops, basketry and kitchen. Thank you for the welcome of the two very friendly animators and Madame "Pai" for her cooking skills and her smile.
We loved this experience! The place was absolutely beautiful and very quiet. The people who welcomed us during the activity were great. Everyone spoke very good English, and was very friendly. We learned a lot about bamboo, its use and even made our own coaster! It's a great souvenir to take home. Also the food we prepared was excellent and I look forward to making it again at home! In addition to that, the organizers are invested in their community and do their best to involve the locals. They're very good people. I totally recommend this activity, and had a great half day!
A very good time shared around the uses of bamboo, weaving and cooking and even a little music: a treat! The team on site is invested, committed and attentive.
Great experience and very interesting around the use of bamboo (weaving of bamboo and cooking classes, musician and dances)! Very nice team! They speak good English and even a little French! I highly recommend !!
What a unique experience that I can fully recommend! It was a nice mix of information and interaction. The mood was cheerful and warm all the time. I had a lot of fun and thank Somsay and his family and the team for the unforgettable time.
We had a varied day with great insights into Laotian culture. We had a lot of fun weaving. In addition, we were able to shoot with a kind of crossbow, try a typical dance as well as various toys made of bamboo. Cooking, even if you can't do everything yourself, was totally fun. The food was very delicious, which was underlined by the typical eating habits. The staff was totally friendly, open-minded and fun. Totally recommended, though not entirely cheap.
