This is an excellent location in the harsh surroundings and planned beautifully with almost to perfection. The open shuttle van picks you up at the jetty that is about ten minutes drive from the Hotel. The short journey is a bit rough through the unbuilt road with lots of pot holes and all the way uphill to the destination. The same shuttle is used on the way back to the jetty on the return journey. The accommodation is clean and neat except that we booked a double room through our travel agent but we were given two single beds that were not really comfortable to sleep. The view was great facing the Mekong River but there was a long walk down the slope to our room to appreciate this view. From our room back to the reception and to the restaurant is about ten minutes walk up the hill. But of course you can call a shuttle to take you up there. And that’s not the end of the walk. You have to take plenty of steps to take you up to the swimming pool, reception, and the restaurant. However, the area is well lit at night and the staff are very polite and helpful. The food, drinks and the service is excellent, both at breakfast and at dinner times. In a nutshell - this is not the place to stay if you cannot climb lots of steps, have a back problem or looking for a quick access to your rooms without a shuttle service. Plenty of walk and climbing steps up and down.

Choosing to go for a morning walk at Le Grand Pakbeng and around was a great decision. The air is so fresh and the view of the river and mountains is beautiful. It is very quiet and peaceful in the morning, making it the perfect way to start the day. The kids also really enjoyed spending time in the pool in the afternoon. If you stay here, waking up early for the sunrise and the fresh air is a must-do experience.
It’s disheartening to see how brutal people can be when reviewing properties. Especially in a country where disastrous reviews can really hurt not only the property, but the people who are trying so hard to make a living at them. We did arrive on a slow boat and were picked up at the dock by the hotel shuttle. About a 10 minute drive out of town brings you directly to the resort. Our villa overlooked the valley and the view was amazing! The sunset really capped off a perfect day on the slow boat. We met people who were smart to break up their slow boat journey and stay a couple of days in Pakbeng. We wish we had done the same as our stay was shorter than we would’ve preferred. Our villa overlooked the Mekong and it was clean, quiet and well appointed. The team was ready to serve and they were very nice. They even set up a beautiful arrangement as this was our 25th wedding anniversary trip. Dinner was outstanding and breakfast was equally as good. Unfortunately our slow boat departure was early so we really didn’t get to enjoy our full time here. The shuttle team happily will take you to and from town where I found the Happy Bar! Ask for the happy menu and don’t worry, everything gonna be alright! I do echo the sentiments that if you can’t do stairs, you’re not going to want a villa where ours was. Best view but the most stairs. We did not stay here long enough to determine if there was a way that they could drive you around for easier access. Perhaps a question you can ask before you book. Overall, I would recommend this place to people who don’t mind the stairs. Get ready for beautiful sunsets
We stopped here en route from Luang Prabang to the Thai border, traveling along the Mekong. The town is typical of the places by the river - bit rough around the edges - and the big, posh hotel is a bit incongruous. Room was lovely, if a bit tricky to locate and requiring plenty of steps to access (hotel is situated on a steep slope overlooking the river). Ditto the restaurant which, when you find and climb up to it, occupies a commanding position. Service here was a bit Basil Fawlty-ish. We were on a B&B deal. Waiter wanted us to pick from set menu because we had dinner included. We explained that dinner wasn't included and we'd like to choose from à la carte. He said he'd check. Long delay. Eventually another chap turns up, and says the same thing as the first guy. He's most insistent until we show him the actual booking. Food arrives and is delicious. We order our dessert as first course being tidied up. Waiter (the second chap) doesn't make a note and we think we saw it being delivered to a different table, then returned to the kitchen whence it never returned. We were tired and gave up at that point.🙄
After spending 7 hours on the slow boat, was really happy to see them at the landing for pickup. A beautiful villa, with hot shower and comfortable beds. We didn't have as much time to experience the full amenities, only draw back was they were either short staffed at the restaurant that evening.
