This was a must see. It’s very Eye opening and lots of history. You won’t regret it! Our Grey Line Bus tour guide was also amazing.

Itinerary
Start the tour at the designated meeting point in New Orleans and journey to the historic Whitney Plantation, one of the antebellum estates located along the Mississippi River. You'll cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway, a flood outlet for the river, and see a panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain on your way to the plantation. Pass by the Evergreen, Felicity and St. Joseph plantations, where rich crops of sugar cane, cotton, and indigo from these fertile lands once traveled to various ports of trade.
Arrive at the Whitney Plantation, which dates back more than 260 years and is now a working museum dedicated to the understanding of slavery in the American South. Visit museum exhibits and restored buildings including historical slave cabins, some of which remain from the original 22 on-site. See the Big House, which is one of the finest surviving examples of Spanish Creole architecture in Louisiana, and learn about the daily life of former slaves at Whitney as recorded by the Federal Writers' Project. Tour at your own pace, and if you choose, download the Whitney Plantation app for the self-guided tour of the plantation. At the end of your experience, you're returned to central New Orleans.

The plantation is an hour away by bus/car. The plantation itself was lovely and well paced out. They give you audio remotes to listen to a story with clear markers on each path. The bus we took there (grey line) broke down we should’ve been back in the city at 3:30 latest. We had so much planned before we had to leave. (We included buffer time but nothing like this.) Instead we didn’t leave until 4:15pm dispatch sent out a bus but there were two more buses that left without us, they had more than enough space on them to take us but no we were stranded with no way home for hours. When the second bus arrive we tried to make it back to the city at a reasonable time we were already late for hotel check out and we missed our flight. We arrived at 5:25pm And our flight was at 6:30pm Dominique our driver was a sweet honest woman she was so kind and very transparent through the whole ordeal. She did her best to make an awful situation better. If you get her as a driver just know you’re in great hands. And Dominique if you read these thank you for all you’ve done.
Wonderful educational experience. Our guide was very friendly and provided some additional information.
Whitney was a very eye opening experience that did not shy away from the gravity of the slave experience. The bus was comfy and well worth the price. Our driver Cindy was incredible and informative!
Very educational all-day trip learning about life on a plantation, origins of slavery, and history of Louisiana. The boat ride was equally educational, learning about animal life and agriculture along the swamp. Tour guides were engaging and knowledgeable.
If you plan to visit multiple plantations, go to Whitney first. We appreciated the tour guides history narrative on the bus in both directions.
The plantation was a good experience, but our bus driver, Donald, was the BEST! The bus got a flat tire on a busy highway returning to the starting point. Donald was a consummate professional during this unfortunate incident. He handled it quickly and quietly. I’m impressed!
The experience is very moving. Looking at how the people back then were treated and living is a very humbling experience
It’s very educational, snacks only for food. The tour says 5 hours, here is the breakdown: 2 hours bus ride (1 hour each way), about 2:15 hours for the self guided tour (download the app, your phone is louder than the handheld that they give you) and the rest of the time is for going to the other plantation to pick up or drop off.
Was very educational but quite short I thought.
It was incredibly enlightening and super easy to navigate. The driver, Alton, was very funny and informative the whole drive, even noticing and adhering to all the napping people on the way back by playing music instead (I was one of the nappers lol!). I saw exactly 4 lizards and 2 alligators on the way there and back, which was super cool! Definitely bring sunscreen though!
The Whitney experience was insightful, and informative. The audio directions were a bit confusing. The Grayline driver of our excursion was absolutely wonderful.
The bus ride there was great, the driver was very informative and pointed out many sites. The plantation tour was good as well. It was a self-paced walking tour. It was nice and very educational.
I really enjoyed this tour. The Whitney is so moving and important and the swamp tour is just light hearted fun. Tour guy Robert really knew his stuff and I learned a lot. And Captain Danny was a hoot! Also a shout out to our driver Stacey who got us there safely. I whole heartedly recommend this tour.
So much history in NO. Our tour guide to the ride to Whitney shared so many fun facts stories about the city.
A must!!!! Awesome tour. Our tour guide Jane explained it all and the swamp tour Dustin our captain was awesome!!!
Touring the plantation was an educational and enriching experience. The experience also included transportation to and from the plantation on an air conditioned bus.
The visit to Whitney Plantation was a wonderful, exceptional and thought provoking experience. I enjoyed every moment. The Grayline Bus did an excellent job getting us to and from the plantation. I will do this tour again.
An experience that I wish every American could have. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about American history.
All of the tour guides we had, are amazing. From the bus to the plantation to the swamp was so much fun.
Our guide Glen was amazing! What a moving experience, so glad we did this. This is what all schools should teach and not the bare minimum!
The visit to the Whitney plantation was a great and emotional experience to visit actual history to see how the slaves lived and the inhumane treatment made me feel that I was standing on thier shoulders living as a free man in these United States of America I recommend a visit
This is the easiest way to see the plantation. Our driver, Alton, gave a good commentary on the ride about all we were seeing. Two hours at the plantation was just right.
This experience is worth every penny! Whitney Plantation gave exactly what I expected and more. From the restoration and all of the history written and preserved. I completely enjoyed the experience and would go again! The driver was very informative and gave us the history of New Orleans on the drive down to the devastation caused by Katrina. He also gave us information on the other plantations in the area and allowed us to stop for pics. 10 out of 10!
A difficult but important part of our nation's history, presented in a thoughtful and impactful way. The exhibits and stories provide a powerful perspective that is both educational and moving. Transportation was very convenient. We traveled in an air-conditioned bus that departed from a central location in the French Quarter, making it easy to enjoy all the nearby attractions before or after the tour. Our driver, Stacy, was wonderful. She shared interesting facts and local history during the ride to and from the plantation, and I always felt safe and comfortable with her driving.
This is my 2nd Grey Line Tour and both have been well organised with excellent timing. The staff are very warm and the narrative of the city and sights around are clear and very knowledgeable. The hosts are always open to questions and give the best information they can x the buses are modern, clean and with good air con which was essential on this trip x 5* from me 👍🏻
Our bus driver was amazing. He shared information all the way to our destination and was friendly. We learned a lot during the route to the plantation and also on the return trip.
Stacey, our bus driver was very informative and we felt very safe with her driving seeing she had so much experience. The plantation itself was so moving and created so much emotion. The exhibits we well maintained and the path easy to follow. The extra exhibits inside the main building were a bonus not to be missed, putting slavery into a world and historical context. I loved the message that was encouraged in the final exhibit, the church. Summed up what had happened and their message for moving on. Highly recommend this tour.
Life changing experience to know you are standing on the ground of the ancestors and to be able to feel it
Check in lady was rude. We should have been given more instruction on listening devices. First time we used one.
Alton our bus driver was amazing and so knowledgable. The plantation itself was awesome to see but sad.
Edward is amazing! Funny and knowledgeable. A great tour.
We selected Whitney plantation due to the amount of research they had conducted on the enslaved lives who had lived and worked here. Our tour guide led us through the social history and gave us an insight into life on the plantation.
Rich in history and self led tour. I really enjoyed being able to move at my own pace, though a few in my group expressed they might have preferred an actual tour guide. While that aspect of the tour is personal preference, we all agreed that the staff, the bus driver, and every aspect of this experience was truly exceptional
Excellent museum - however two hours is NOT enough to visit this place and to fully experience. I felt rushed and in need to meet back for the bus pickup. You cannot fully experience this museum in less than 2 hours. Unfortunate, recommend getting tickets but not part of Viator package unless they change.
It was well organized and well done. Time worked out great. The bus driver and tour guide was informative amd entertaining.
I came to New Orleans for my birthday weekend and wanted to be immersed in history. This tour did just that. From the moment you board the bus Kate H talks you through New Orleans history. It’s topped off by experiencing history through the perspective of the enslaved and a swamp tour
We had a great experience on our tour , it was self guided the grounds were lovely, lots of history to take in very informative.
The overall experience was so amazing. It was the perfect amount of time to learn about it all and still take some time to just enjoy the experience. The guide was lovely! I felt very safe and very welcomed.
Educational and enlightening. We had a great time and enjoyed seeing everything up close and personal.
I know it sounds odd. A tour of a former slave plantation followed by a swamp ride in the Cajun bayou, but if you’re into history like I am, and want to see live gators, this tour is for you. . Dionne and the driver did a magnificent job making us feel comfortable, with Dionne being quite knowledgeable of NOLA’s history. We stopped by that “pretty little plantation down the road” for lunch, which after seeing Whitney, was weird and gross. The swamp ride was pretty taxing in 96-degree heat, and the tour guide could have piped it down a notch, but I enjoyed seeing the wildlife, and holding an alligator!
Little confusing with self guided tour, direction not clearly mark. Overall, very educational. Bring lunch. Only drinks and chips sold in store.
Dionne was the best bus tour guide for gray line tours, she is very knowledgeable.
Easy baby great tour for the money with Robert, Donald and Captain Tomm. We had a great time will do again.
I had a wonderful experience. It was my first time visiting New Orleans. I booked through viator, the meeting point was easy to locate and Glen from grayline was our driver. He was very pleasant and gave us a little history about the plantations during the ride. The Whitney Plantation itself gave great insight of what the slaves had endured. We did the self guided tour and it was easy to follow and very informative.
This plantation tour was both informative and deeply reflective. As a Black woman living in America, I recognize that this museum tells the story of a time that shaped my ancestors’ lives. I felt the museum did an amazing job of honoring the lives and experiences of the enslaved people with dignity and respect. Throughout the tour, there were opportunities to sit, rest, and reflect, which were especially meaningful since some of the exhibits evoked deep emotions. I highly recommend visiting the Whitney Plantation to anyone seeking an honest and impactful look at this important part of American history. The Grey Line bus service also provided a friendly and knowledgeable driver, which made the overall experience even more enjoyable.
Though we appreciate the Whitney Plantation’s allowing their guides to approach their tours through a “lens that is personal to them, shaped by their experience and insights”, surely there must be some standard? Our guide started the tour by recounting that his teachers had “lied” to him about slavery. As an educator, I get that. The disservice our education system has done to Black history is appalling. However, that seemed to be the whole thrust of his presentation! For the first three or four stops, we had to listen to him excoriate “public schools,” our “public school system,” and “teachers” (his words) over and over and over again. We got the point the first time! His personal agenda and feelings about teachers should not be the basis of his tour. Give us the “unvarnished truth” about slavery but spare us the tirade against teachers, especially when he was painting with such a broad brush. That may have been his experience in Mississippi, but it was not mine in Maryland. And all of those things that he said that are not taught in schools today, well, we absolutely do and have been for years. Perhaps this historian needs to do a little bit more research. This man did not know I was a teacher, so I tried not to take it personally, but honestly, I was a little over it when he told the group that if we didn't want the truth, “then this is not the tour for you and you should go find another tour”. Really? Is that acceptable? Our group thought that we were coming to learn about the lives of enslaved people on the Whitney Plantation. We were wrong. Although our guide was knowledgeable about the minutia of the history of the slave trade and US history in general, it wasn’t even till the end of the tour that I learned they grew sugar cane. We were shown the slave quarters. How many families lived in one cabin? What foods did they eat? Did they grow their own food? Could they visit other people? Not talked about. We saw the overseers cabin. How did he treat the slaves? How did the overseer get his job? Was he paid? Not talked about. What jobs did domestic slaves do? How were they treated? what was it like to work in the fields? How many hours did they work? Not talked about. I guess we truly misunderstood what the tour was all about. Or maybe it just comes down to the guide you happen to get randomly. How unfortunate.
Is very powerful. Hopefully it will soften the hearts of those racists people that still judge others by the color of their skin.
We truly enjoyed the tour of the Whitney Plantation, and we very much enjoyed the swamp and all the creatures we saw, truly a wonderful, terrific tine
I had a great driver. He definitely gave us some insight on New Orleans history around the city. The plantation tour was definitely insightful, informative and emotional because of the history it holds. It’s one thing to see it in movies, hear about it in history books but to see it person was definitely something unbelievable and that it actually happened to black people, black children at that. The tour was worth and the driver was excellent. I’m sorry i couldn’t remember the drivers name but he was good!!!!
