Itinerary
In 1842, Creoles of color began purchasing pews inside Saint Augustine's Church for their families’ Sunday worship. News of this spread and in a matter of days, white people kicked off a campaign of their own to buy family pews. Thus, the historic War of the Pews began.
The Backstreet Cultural Museum boasts an incredible collection of the most dazzling Mardi Gras Indian costumes, second line umbrellas and photographs ever to grace the backstreets of New Orleans.
The tree-shaded museum grounds of the New Orleans African American Museum include the Tremé Villa Meilleur's original kitchen dependencies as well as several homes that reflect a range of local building styles.
After cutting the highest-selling gospel song in history, Mahalia Jackson took her place on the international stage. She never forgot her New Orleans roots.
The late Louis Armstrong remains one of this city’s most honored ambassadors. He was affectionately nicknamed both Satchmo and Pops, and was born in 1901, just outside Tremé. He grew up among churchgoers, hustlers, pimps and musicians.
The tour takes place in Treme.

Tour would not play at the start location. Tried 15 times and it was frozen on the "download" page. Cell had full service, so it cannot be blamed on that. Never got to enjoy the tour.
This self guided audio tour uses the app 'VoiceMap' which my husband and I have had mixed experiences with. The app initially would not pick up our GPS location and we consequently walked in the wrong direction - but once we restarted it, it was smooth sailing. The information on the audio guide was interesting. The voice over, tone and method of delivery made it seem very personal and warm. The only complaint we had is that - at one point the guide had us walk over to an underpass and told us to explore the area under the bridge. That area though was inhabited by displaced individuals living in tents etc. Unsure if the guide was made before they took over that area, but it was very confusing to say the least for my husband and I. Our recommendations if you do the audio tour: - There is alot of walking - so be prepared - Plan your trip so you aren't too close to sunset or peak afternoon heat - The tour starts in Louis Armstrong park but only covers a small portion of it, if you want to check out more of the park, account for that in your time. - The tour references and walks by certain stores and coffee shops - all of which close around 2-3pm. We'd recommend the tour for anyone who likes exploring at their own pace and is comfortable with long long walks.
The narrative was very well done. I learned a lot and enjoyed listening to it. It was very impressive that the system could detect where I was standing and start the narrative regarding that spot. I will definitely look for these again.
Truly enjoyed this self paced audio tour! I was able to walk the entire neighborhood and feel a connection in real time while learning the history of this historically Black neighborhood. The directions and automatic resumption of the recording as I reached the next destination was awesome! So glad I found this last minute tour! My trip was indeed enhanced because of it! I’ll be doing it again when I return for the Jazz fest. The quaint coffee shop and museum were closed so I definitely will repeat!
This experience was great from the beginning. Easy to download and use the app. Very clear speaker with interesting info. Great guidance.
I enjoyed the personal and individual insights by the guide. I also enjoyed how well we were “guided” around.
Interesting notes and historical details, easy to follow, no software glitches worked perfectly. Well worth the price and time spent.
The audio story was great, but there are two sections that request the listener cross sections of a hwy that IS NOT MADE FOR PEDESTRIAN CROSSING. Be careful!!!
It was very easy to access the audio tour. My family and I enjoyed the learning about the neighborhood.
It is difficult to list favorite parts because the gps link barely worked and we were only able to get a few of the audio descriptions. Upon returning to our VRBO we listened but had to remember the sites.
I can't believe how amazingly wonderful this tour was, and I'll bet the other ones are too. We toured The Treme in New Orleans. It started out at Armstrong Park then took us around the neighborhood of the Treme with all the colorful and interesting houses. We learned about the history of the areas and the people who live/d there and the changes that have occurred over the years. It even took us to a little coffee shop to get refreshments if wanted. And, during Covid times, it kept us out of large tour groups. That's the wonderful part. The AMAZING part was that the app on our phone knew where we were! We never had to turn the app off and on it just told us where to go and knew where we were! When we'd get to the next spot it would start talking again. Or if we got off course it would suggest we look at the map. I get lost easily but their concise directions made it so easy to stay on track! The technology is impressive. We're going to Scotland, I wish they had tours there!
An impressive and well paced walking tour with important information and details but giving the listener space to fully experience it and appreciate it.
A sugarcoated view of New Orleans history that misses the perseverance of the Treme community in spite of the domination of the rest of the city and nation. She highlights her heritage throughout but doesn’t seem to recognize the disconnect between her family history and the people of this neighborhood. Do the people of Treme have similar connections to the park that they are physically gated out of?
What an amazing self-guided tour. We loved the stories, the history, the beauty. Thank you for guiding us through this wonderful neighborhood.
This audio tour was terrific! I am directionally challenged & it kept me on course with the map provided. Commentary was insightful and concise. I stopped for delicious lemonade at a spot mentioned. I enjoyed the walk ...until threatening weather caused me to curtail my walk. Be smart & prepare for rain.
It was an incredible informative tour I would highly recommend this I learned so much and felt like the orator was holding my hands through the experience I loved in interactive nature of the tour
The tour is very cool and the audio tour guide is wonderful. It is so thorough that she even helps you cross the street. Best part is that it's a very cost effective way to get to explore the city.
User friendly. Budget friendly. And a great way to explore a cool neighborhood on foot, bike or even by car. The stories of jazz, civil rights and urban development are well researched and well told.
VERY user-friendly and very informative tour. Love that I can travel at my own pace and absorb the descriptions as I wander from place to place. I can also rewind in case I missed something--or listen to it again later on. Narrator also incorporates personal references---she's a native of New Orleans. Great value!!
What a gift to visitors AND locals who want to explore this amazing neighborhood! We’ve lived in New Orleans for most of our lives and we learned so much about our city and its history! The app worked so well and gave us the opportunity to leisurely relish in the culture. We also discovered a new favorite coffee oasis! Can’t think of a more glorious way to spend a Sunday!!!
This self-guided walking tour of the Treme is unlike anything else you can get in New Orleans. You can set your own pace so that you can visit sites as little or as long as you want, or enjoy a cup of coffee at a local shop before moving on to the next location. The well-researched history and information as well as personal anecdotes from the author make this tour an interesting and lovely way to explore the Treme neighborhood.
Unfortunately. The tour is already booked our for two days in advance. It makes no sense from a logical standpoint. Called the number and a friendly agent acknowledged my puzzlement but was not able to help.
Overall, the tour is good, the download and operation of the app as well as the location work well. However, some information is outdated (e.g. the Backstreet Museum has moved). On the way we met a woman who advised us not to walk the route below Claiborne Ave as the route was not safe. This is also a place for homeless people to sleep. So we skipped this part of the track. As a result, the individual audio stations of the tour could only be started manually with difficulty.
