Although called a lake, this is actually a large lagoon and brackish estuary fed by fresh water rivers and connected to the Gulf of Mexico. Covering 630 square miles (1600 km2) it is one of the largest wetlands in North America.
View the spillway, a flood control operation in the Lower Mississippi west of New Orleans. The spillway, when open, allows floodwaters from the Mississippi River to flow into Lake Pontchartrain and thence into the Gulf of Mexico.
This privately owned wildlife refuge ensures that you won’t encounter any other boats during your peaceful journey into the swamp. Local Cajun captains share personal tales of their own swamp explorations and fascinating information on the plants and wildlife you'll encounter. The primitive beauty of moss draped cypress tress and abundant wildlife guarantees some amazing pictures! Enjoy a beverage and snack from the open air pavilion.

Its bus tour that is all day. Our host Val and Alton were great made the day very enjoyable and Val has great knowledge of new orleans history very informative. I have always wanted to go to a plantation and I thoroughly enjoyed the day and the swap tour as well.
Both of these tours were an absolute amazing experience. I learned so much history about what life was like for the people who lived and died on the Oak Valley Plantation as well as on the other plantations during the Colonial and pre-Civil War eras. The swamp tour was a incredible!! It was a tour through a pristine swamp land with amazing wild animals like alligators, raccoons, wild pigs, ibises, and the tour guide was really friendly and personable, and he even let us hold a baby 2-year-old gator! It was an incredible journey through wild Louisiana, and will always remember it.
This is an all day excursion- but the transportation was very comfortable and there was ample time to use restrooms and grab some refreshments. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. I really enjoyed the swamp tour. We saw lots of birds, turtles and alligators. Our guide for this part of the tour was very funny and informative. I recommend taking this combination tour instead of two separate tours as it saves a lot of time driving.
This was a really worthwhile day trip from New Orleans. Wonderful informative guide Kate and her driver Dominique were lovely hosts on this mindful historical trip of the Oak Alley property as well as the added adventure of taking in the wildlife of the bayou swamp tour. Highly recommend.
Jane did a fantastic narrative of New Orleans that was very interesting and captivating. We did both the Oak Hills Plantation and swamp tour and highly recommend th this adventure.
Kimberly our tour guide was amazing at giving us the history of what makes New Orleans well New Orleans she also had the best humor she was the best . And Cindy our bus driver was so sweet and displayed the best service friendly and welcoming
Highly recommend this experience especially if you are traveling to NOLA without a car and want to experience the outer areas. The meetup site was right near the river behind the Cafe Beignet. The bus was comfortable and clean, and Cindy was a great driver. Kate was very informative and took care of our group. I felt very welcomed by them and the entire journey was efficient. I also loved the music portion at the end on the bus to wind down. I'm very glad I booked this tour on my trip.
Oak Alley was OK but the house tour was just so-so. The docent at the slave cabins was good. Our tour guide at the swamp tour was real good. Sit at the front of the boat and he’ll put you right in the action!
There was a lot in this tour and it was so comfortable and not exhausting!
An excellent day with Kate as our tour guide and Cindy as our driver. Our boat captain Dustin was also wonderful. It was a really informative trip and there was plenty of time for wandering and exploring both the plantation and Cajun Pride. In the plantation, we got to see the beautiful gardens, planter’s house and slave houses with guides who talked us through life on the plantation. On the river cruise, we saw loads of alligators (all different sizes/ages), raccoons, turtles and wild boars. Our captain told stories and jokes, then surprised us at the end with a tiny, baby alligator to hold! A truly brilliant experience.
Had a great day the swamp tour was amazing captain Dustin was great and the oak alley tour was also amazing. The only thing is I didn’t realize it would be over 2 hours drive time on a crowded bus.
The tour guides at both places were excellent. The guide on the bus needs to either practice her stories or have a script to follow. She was all over the place in her discussions and made it difficult to be interested in what she was trying to say. She seems very knowledgeable but unfortunately was unable to articulate successful.
What an outstanding experience. Pick up up the hotel was wonderful and we were also dropped off back at our hotel. The swamp tour was exceptional. Our guide captain Bobby was exceptional. He really provides an outstanding experience. Would definitely take this tour again and highly recommend to anyone else.
I loved it! it was beautiful and full of awesome sites, the atmosphere was incredible and the admission fee wasnt awful. the visit was a week long but I enjoyed it to its fullest, the crowds was small. and the staff I came across were the sweetest! Best for a break from the world and relaxing time!
What a fun experience. Our guide was a great storyteller. Enchanting voice included. There's a lot to see. You will be entertained. I even managed to learn something. Great experience!!!!! I had a fantastic time.
Enjoyed our tour with Kate as our guide and Leo as our driver. It was a good day out. I would’ve liked the opportunity to stop and take some photos of the other plantations we passed. Even just from the roadside would’ve been enough. Oak Alley is a beautiful property and the best restrooms we’ve used on our trip so far. While the ‘big house’ is stunning, the tour only allows people into a couple of rooms and no photos allowed inside. Bustling cafe and gift shop with food samples. Swamp Tour was a very different experience (good different). Captain Tom was excellent value. Hilarious and knowledgeable. We got to hold a 1 year old alligator. Great day out. Highly recommend.
Excellent tour. Very knowledgeable guide. Swamp tour was a real highlight
This trip will leave you with a huge reminder of the power of the nature. Very pleasant day out of the city
We had a wonderful time. The bus was air conditioned and comfortable. The tour guides were great and very helpful. The only hiccup was when we got to the pickup address we had a tiny bit of trouble figuring out where to go. But once we walked a little we saw the bus hidden behind some big, round building.
Great time. I enjoyed the swamp tour the most . The boat guide was excellent
Most of the 7+ hour experience was simply driving to and from the plantation. We had no idea the plantation was so far away from the meeting place. The tour guide did interact and point out sights and was very knowledgeable and informative as well as quite humorous. My wife and I agree that it was well worth the money and would recommend this trip, just prepare for the long bus ride.
Wonderful trip, lots of leaning about Louisiana and New Orleans history, slavery facts and I really enjoyed the Oak Alley plantation - house is lovely , yummy pralines in the shop and good food on restaurant . Our guide Kimberley was so knowledgeable I wish I did this trip as beginning of New Orleans stay to take full advantage of her food recommendations. Swamp boat trip so much fun, saw gators, racoons, a turtle and birds - beautiful surroundings and funny captain/ we got given a baby gator to hold for pictures that was a bit unexpected and will be a good memory even if I personally don’t agree with handling wild animals . If you only have a day in Mew Allen’s this is the tour to do.
Fantastic tour that made everything so easy when traveling without a car. The bus was easy to get to, the guide was wonderful and shared a lot of interesting information, drop off and instructions at the plantation were clear (beautiful grounds there!), then hopped back on the bus for a fun swamp tour. Highly recommend for a fun filled day where all logistics are handled.
Everything about this tour was amazing . From Oak Alley plantation to the swamp tour, but the best part was Kate and Jasa the guide and the driver.
Kate was an excellent guide, she was very informative the whole trip. It was an awesome experience! Just be prepared to spend the whole day with this activity.
Kate H. was a great guide with a lot of information. Shout out to our driver Jass (?) I felt very safe riding in the bus. We saw raccoons, razorback pigs, and many alligators. I could have stayed all day at the Oak Alley Plantation. It’s beautiful.
We had the best time! Dionne was wonderful. She took a lot of time to answer everyone’s questions and keep the group engaged. She shared a lot of information on the history and culture of New Orleans l and the plantations. She gave restaurant and shopping recommendations. She was also extremely patient with my 6 year old and made the tour engaging for her as well! The bus drive Dwayne was also great!
Great tour, fun and educational
It was an awesome time all the tour guides were excellent and very informative! Kimberly our bus tour guide was excellent! Caiyanne at Oak. Alley was fantastic! Captain Dustin on the swamp boat tour was funny and extremely entertaining!
Our tour guide and bus driver were excellent! Upon arriving at Oak Alley Plantation and Cajun Pride swamp tours we were greeted by an onsite guide- each knowledgeable and friendly. It was a great learning experience all around, Kimberly shared her knowledge of history, food, entertainers, and enthusiasm for the culture!
The Oak Alley tour was easy but there are stairs. Some great pictures of trees and gardens. The bourbon twist drink is refreshing.
The tour was easy to book and affordable. Check-in process was easy. Pleasant guide and driver. Clean, smooth and spacious bus. Punctual.
Kate was our tour guide and she was a wealth of knowledge! She was open to questions and loved interacting. She was lovely! The Oak Alley tour was well done. The young man who shared information about the slaves quarters was really impressive. The history and his theories were engaging and impactful. And I can’t say enough about Captain Dan from the Swamp tour! We had so much fun and I can’t believe how many alligators we got to see! He made sure that everyone had a chance to see the wildlife and alligators, so there wasn’t a bad seat on the boat. Highly, highly recommend this tour!
Great tour even better tour guide who has great knowledge and made the bus journey very enjoyable 20/20
Amazing experience! All of it! Our guide, bus driver, and tour guides were all knowledgeable, witty, funny, and just downright entertaining! Highly recommend!
Excellent best one we have been on.
We went for both the Swamp tour and the Oak alley plantation tour and enjoyed them both Plantation trip was very informative and the swamp tour was very an amazing live experience watching the alligators being fed by the very daring guide! Our tour guide Kate was excellent!
The Oak Alley Plantation was a wee bit disappointing, guide didn't have a lot of empathy. Swamp tour was truly very good guide was superb very engaging.
Great tour Kate did an amazing job providing information on the history of New Orleans and the surrounding area, it was a great experience that would be enjoyable for anyone who enjoys history, beautiful architecture and nature
Amazing experience. Loved every moment of it. Highly recommend!! Robert is super knowledgeable guide and told us many great things. And the swamp ride was just unreal! So many animals we saw, great stories. Even rain didn’t spoil it!
Very enjoyable! Even though it was hot outside it was cool on the boat without being wet! We saw a lot of wild life! Fed gators and raccoons and wild boars! Val was a wealth of knowledge on the history of New Orleans and the plantations and their slaves. She made the trip fun and enjoyable.
Both the tour guide and the driver were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, despite the torrential rain towards the end of the day.
Great trip, plantation tour very interesting. Alligator tour was fantastic with great guide, good craic and got to see lots of gators, wild boars, turtles and raccoons. Would definitely recommend.
Great experience, seeing and learning more about New Orleans history and culture. Well paced tour, enough time to explore Oak Alley without feeling rushed. Dione was a great tour guide, knowledgeable and lovely to be around.
Great tour. Full day including plantations. Robert the guide was extremely knowledgeable about Louisiana and its history. The swamp tour was amazing and we got to hold a baby aligator. Jack as the captain was the best!
This was amazing. Wonderful tour guides, wonderful lessons, wonderful experiences. My wife has a tendency to get motion sickness and I still highly recommend this tour. She joked that the bus ride was worse than the swamp boat for her motion sickness. Overall 10/10 no notes. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable, friendly and engaging I would have listened to him for hours. It’s a long day but it is worth every penny and every minute.
Had an amazing day. Guide was very knowledgeable about new orleans history.
Great day out, made even better by the tour guides , Robert on the full tour and Tom on the swamp tour.
It was absolutely incredible, start to finish. Our chaperone John was so cool and hilarious. Oak Alley Plantation was gorgeous, and our tour guide of the “Big House” Presley(?) was a ton of fun, energetic, and knowledgeable. The swamp tour was so amazing, we actually got rained out by a thunderstorm, but in the short time we were there we saw so many gators, raccoons, pigs, birds, and even got to watch the captain feed gators jumping out of the water.
