My wife and I are locals, literally live around the corner. We have talked about going for years, we finally went tonight. This is a great museum, lots of Louisiana history in addition to more local lore. We went at night which I thought was more appropriate, self guided but a ton of great stories. Grab a drink, wander at your leisure, a nice relaxing way to spend an evening. Highly recommend!

This is a really interesting museum. A good explanation of the early history of New Orleans, leading to the story of the sex work industry here. An honest, unsentimental portrayal of the way vice was managed here.
This is a superb exhibit . Not just about Storyville but tells the real story of this amazing city . Exhibit is full of relics from early NO and brings you back in time .and even brings you into the birth of jazz from early days ((((. Jazz is dying in NO ))) This is the definitive NO exhibit to see and I hope it never closes. They should advertise more .
This is a fascinating place. It is packed with information about the history of the city with the focus on the growth of prostitution in the area in the years between the Jefferson administration and the outbreak of World War One. There are so many stories, all beautifully presented with some brilliant interactive features. The links with early jazz are here too; you can even listen to Jelly Roll Morton speak! It is a dark and disturbing history but one that anybody interested in New Orleans should find out about. An essential place to visit.
This was a very interesting Museum. I enjoyed reading about some of the history of New Orleans.
General admission is self directed, but full of lots of the history of New Orleans. Really enjoyed our visit. Recommended highly if you have an adult group. Not really appropriate for kiddos.
It’s basically a story about prostitution. Period point blank.
Great New Orleans History lesson. It’s well done and interesting for anyone interested in New Orleans history!
Great exibits and even some interactive ones.
What a cool amd unique museum, loved the interactive portions that helped detail the lives and stories!
I am happy I went. This is not a place I would want to revisit necessarily, but it is certainly something I was happy to do one time. I am from the area, but I just wanted to experience a different kind of museum. Lots of fun facts, and considering the subject, it was not displayed in poor taste. They used lots of discretion while getting the history across. I felt like they did a good job telling the story from start to finish as you went through the museum. It was done orderly. I’d say 90 minutes is about all the time I would want to spend here. If I would have read every single thing on display, I might have been there closer to 2 1/2 hours. In addition, there were restrooms available, and they were very well maintained.
The museum was fantastic. We did the self guided tour and really took our time. It was interesting, immersive and interactive for a couple. We learned so much. The gift shop was fun and unique too.
The Storyville Museum was one of the highlights of our trip to New Orleans. It’s thoughtfully curated, highly informative, and presents the history of Storyville with respect and authenticity rather than sensationalism. The immersive exhibits and fascinating stories gave us a much deeper appreciation for the city’s history and the origins of jazz. If you’re looking for something unique in the French Quarter, this museum is well worth the visit.
This was a very informative and interesting museum. The museum was well-maintained, and the ladies at the front desk were very friendly. I highly recommend this as an adult-only activity. It was only about 1 1/2 hours to complete it, and there is a parking lot right next to it, so easy to park.
This museum is great. It really gives a great history and look into the Red Light District. It's interactive and entertaining.
Very informative. Loved the hands-on exhibits.
Visiting this museum was a highlight of our visit to Nola. We learned so many things that we would not have learned elsewhere. The exhibits are well-curated and engaging. All of the information was interesting and thought-provoking, as well as being sensitive to the perspectives of the women who lived and worked in Storyville. We plan on visiting this museum again, on our next visit to Nola.
A fascinating museum with modern exhibits and excellently curated. It tells the story of prostitution in New Orleans by explaining the history of the city. It tells the story of French and Spanish colonization, slavery, and jazz. Extremely well done.
I travel to NOLA a couple of times a year and during my last visit for the French Quarter festival I was told about Storyville. If you want to learn about the city's history this is a must stop. The self guided tour starts with the Spanish and French early settlements. Learn how to keep the early male settlers happy the French government sent French women for the men to marry. As it turned out they became prostitutes for the men not wives. Learn about the areas that the brothels occupied and see a replica of the one room where business was conducted. Learn why the red light became a symbol and the trainmen's lantern. Truly a fascinating experience. It took me 2 hours to go through the museum with all the info to read.
Wow!!! So interesting and informative. So much history. It was a treat to spend a few hours here. Staff very nice.
This place was recommended to my friend and I and we were hesitant to go, but I’m glad we did. It was historical, unique, tasteful, and informative. It was not just an x-rated take on prostitution in New Orleans, as some may assume. The experience provided a glimpse into the past and the way life was historically through the centuries, especially for women. Each room told a story about a certain time period from the settlement of NO all the way up to present time. Expect to spend 1.5-2 hours there because there is a lot of reading to do, but it’s totally fascinating.
The Storyville was a great rainy day activity. The information was presented in intriguing ways. Gives you insights into New Orleans during that time in history.
Gave a 1- star only because it was cancelled due to guide illness. It was handled very professionally, however, with early notification, the chance for a different time or tour and a full refund
Not to be missed. Fascinating history of the Storyville district with interesting and creative displays.
What an amazing and interesting museum! Really deep dives into the history behind the "red light district" of New Orleans and the rise of jazz music. Four stars because I was hoping for more. Plan to spend about 1 - 1.5 hours there.
The self-guided tour at the Storyville Museum was a really enjoyable experience. I loved being able to explore at my own pace and take everything in without feeling rushed. I learned so much about Storyville’s history and its unique role in shaping New Orleans culture. The exhibits were engaging, informative, and easy to follow, making the experience both educational and interesting. Overall, it was a great visit and definitely worth it if you want a deeper understanding of the city’s past.
I had no idea just how many brothels New Orleans used to have, spoiler alert, it’s a lot. This museum teaches you all about Storyville, which was basically an area of New Orleans that was nothing but brothels. It had several interactive exhibits that were fun to learn with. It is an adults only museum and in my opinion totally worth it.
The Storyville Museum is essential New Orleans history. Full stop. From which countries controlled the city as a colony to the military history to the culture & the very personal histories of the women who inhabited it, Storyville is a lens through which you can understand the city. Lots of fun, tactile exhibits & jaw dropping archive footage & audio are interspersed throughout the museum. A must see when you’re in the French Quarter.
Storyville is an interesting part of New Orleans history. The museum is really well done with great graphics and story boards.
Good tour of the history of Storyville and some of the things unique about New Orleans. Lots of information about different cultures that made up the area
Interesting historical significance. This museum does an excellent job of using a timeline to chart the history of Storyville. There are experiential opportunities that increase the understanding of what transpired.
Storyville was such a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as we did, but it turned out to be an incredibly enlightening experience. Everything was thoughtfully done, and you can tell there’s real care behind it. The ladies at the front desk were amazing—so welcoming, kind, and helpful. They really set the tone for the visit. I would absolutely recommend it.
This museum offers an entertaining, engaging journey through one fascinating facet of New Orleans' rich and storied history. Highly recommend.
Wonderful museum that gives a great overview of a difficult time and subject. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality and quantity of the displays. Definitely worth the time to see it
Overall this is a fairly well-done museum…. Interesting stories to tell (no pun intended). A bit steep in price for what you got - especially compared to other museums in the city. But it was clean and well-kept.
A great museum that provided a lot of history and interaction. Well done and maintained. We loved walking through and learning about Storyville.
Spent just under 2 hours here learning about the history of NOLA. Really informative and worth a quick stop.
The Storyville Museum was very informative. It allowed us to understand the history of the city as we did other walking tours and roamed about on our own. Great exhibitions and people.
What a great museum! Such rich history presented in a factual and tasteful manner. We really enjoyed it.
This museum had only been open about 6 months when my sister and I went on my birthday trip to New Orleans. I think it's becoming increasingly popular, but when we went, it was a hidden gem! Everyone THINKS they know the history of New Orleans, but this museum shares the true history: the good, the bad, and the ugly! It is so interesting how the city was largely known for it's red light district but the city officials and US government tried to bury it under a rug. When the US government forced the closure of Storyville in 1917 the NOLA mayor summed up the situation well "You can make it illegal, but you can't make it unpopular" This is a fascinating museum that everyone who goes to New Orleans should visit if they want to learn the true history of New Orleans!
Having researched Storyville a great deal, I was gratified to see that this museum is accurate, factual, and the exhibits are engaging and very professional, like ones you'd see at the Smithsonian or other world-class venue. I was also glad that the museum pointed out that the "Storyville Ordinance" did NOT legalize prostitution, a myth repeated over the years. The other threads that flowed from Storyville, like jazz, are well-presented, and the museum states-as is true-that Jazz was not invented in New Orleans, but that Storyville certainly was an incubator for the genre and for many soon-to-be-famous performers. This is, of course, a museum for 18+ folks.
Storyville Museum is self-explanatory: it goes in depth about how the community of Storyville took place, with women being paid to satisfy men in a not-so-discreet part of the New Orleans. The museum dives into the infamy Storyville crafted for itself, with newspapers condemning the women, yet some of these people who protested against the practice had took part in their services. My emotions traveled from being humored at this development, to fully facing the truth that this was not all for fun and humor--for many women of Storyville, this was the other way they could keep a roof over their head. The tour details tragic incidents like violent deaths and immoral acts that took place to bring in more visitors. It's an unsightly part of New Orleans' history, but this attraction presents such things with tact and well-thought out design. I was lucky enough to have the whole museum to myself and my partner, so we spent much time really absorbing this history and discussing the bleak and disturbed reality of what was promoted as a lively form of business. I recommend others to stop by this place; it is definitely not for children or those sensitive to sexual content, violence, or abuse. If your comfortable exploring those topics, then Storyville Museum is a great attraction to visit. It was one of the most beloved spots that I found during my vacation, and I'd be happy to go again!
This is an interesting place for mature adults. Lots to see. It explains a lot of history. It is done very tastefully. I had a great time!
Interesting history on start of NOLA and prostitution. Self guided tour, takes 1-2 hours if you read all information.
A museum about the red light district--so interesting. However, it's more than that, it's a really interesting insight into the history of the foundation on which New Orleans was created and how it led to the awesome music. Well done museum--interesting at every turn.
Good way to spend a rainy day indoors. We went to the Storyville museum and learned about the history of some of New Orleans darker side. Mostly about prostitution and how neighborhoods developed in an historical context. Museum is well laid out and the exhibits are professionally done. Doesn’t live up to the online hype about the “adults only” museum. It was interesting though.
Needs to be more interactive. It was mostly just narratives you read. There were a few visuals where a visitor had to listen manipulate something.
A history museum of the New Orleans Red Light districts. This museum also provides the best overall history of the founding and growth of New Orleans. Definitely worth the hour long walk through its exhibits.
We had a great time at the Storyville Museum in New Orleans. Beautifully curated showing the history and music of NOLA.
It was well done. Very informative and interesting. Great experience for a 1-2 hour tour. The way you also did the background with the people was also well done.
