Itinerary
Listen to a narrative history of Louisiana cuisine, starting with the culinary contributions of local American Indian tribes and leading to the arrival of the Europeans and West Africans who created its Creole flavors. You’ll hear about the unique geography of southern Louisiana, as well as the linguistic origins of dozens of local dishes, from beignets and étouffée to gumbo and jambalaya.
If you’d like, purchase a drink at the full bar before moving on to a stop at the Pepper Palace Hot Sauce Bar, where you can sample dozens of different hot sauces, BBQ sauces, dry rubs, seasonings and more.
Third stop is Leah’s Pralines, a candy shop established in 1933. After learning its history, taste a Creole praline and sample the bacon pecan brittle.
Next, bite into two New Orleans inventions: the muffuletta and the po-boy. Both are served at the funky dive NOLA Po-boys, a local joint with an immense menu. Discuss the 19th and 20th century history of the New Orleans' immigrants as you sample the fried catfish poboy on freshly baked New Orleans–style French bread before moving on to the slightly warmed muffuletta: an Italian-style sandwich of ham, salami, mortadella, provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese and New Orleans-style olive salad.
The next stop is Tujague’s, the second-oldest restaurant in New Orleans, serving up classic Creole cuisine since 1856. Discover the culinary contributions of the butchers of the French Market while you dig into one delicious dish: the Bavarian-style slow-cooked beef brisket.
Your final stop is Dickie Brennan's Tableau where you will enjoy a savory Seafood Gumbo. Tableau is owned and operated by a distinguished local restauranteur and located in the heart of New Orleans, the historic Jackson Square. By the time the tour ends happy hour will have started at Tableau.
The walking tour covers about one and a half miles (2.4 km) at a leisurely pace.

Great food and excellent service. Beth was articulate, informative and funny! Would highly recommend recommend this tour!
Good food liberally spiced with area knowledge. Our guide Beth was full of insight and anecdotes and a fun personality to boot.
Absolutely wonderful tour. History, good food variety, great locations visited. Our tour guide, Beth, was engaging and knowledgeable. Felt lucky to have her as our guide!
Everything we ate was so delicious. The portions were generous without being too much. We had enough time to enjoy and talk about what we were tasting. And to make it a thousand times better, our tour guide was so I knowledgeable. She told us history, culture, and etimology. She had answers for all our questions and was happy to go in depth when we asked. She was very friendly and welcoming as well. This was my friends first food tour, and unfortunately for her the bar has now been set very high for future tours.
Vegetarians, rejoice! Dr Gumbo food tours caters to us :) They confirmed that the food is not made in pork seasoning, lard or anything else. Email them and book direct. Fantastic tour with a small group of a dozen people. Great food and portions - even as a vegetarian, I tried a gumbo, a jambalaya, a po'boy and the banana foster dessert. I'm sad to be blanking on the guide's name (Oct 15 1pm tour) but he was amazing - as an improv+actor, and with great knowledge of NOLA history, he made both the streets and the food come to life. I learned more about NOLA history on this tour than I did on any other tour. And the Dr Pepper and Leah's Pralines stops were quite fun for gift items. Highly recommend doing this on your first couple days in town.
This was a great way to learn about some history and food of New Orleans on the first day of our trip to help us plan restaurants and sights to see for the rest of our trip.
Our tour guide Ben was very informative, the food was as absolutely amazing, and history lesson was awesome! Ben even revealed the ingredients of the holy trinity, but you’ll have to take the tour yourself to get it 😊
Excellent tour, Beth, our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Plenty of food to sample, we didn’t eat for the rest of the day! Got a good feel of the French Quarter from walking to each place.
I think this is the best thing we did in New Orleans this trip! Dylan was a wonderful host.... he was funny and engaging and knowledgeable. The tour was easily walkable. Maybe a few blocks in the French Quarter. And the history and the food presentations were integrated well and timely correctly. I especially liked visiting The Red Fish Grill at @ 11:30 and starting in on the cocktails! What could be more New Orleans than that. Needless to say, it created quite a convivial spirit among our tour mates. I think it was the most fun we had in a long time! Don't miss it!
The food was great and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Will definitely recommend this to anyone heading to New Orleans
It was a great experience. Good food great history. I will do it again great to do the first day or two when you get to the city so you learn your way around.
Fabulous combination of history and outstanding New Orleans cuisine. Our tour guide, Beth, was amazing.!
Beth was very knowledgeable. She added history to the food tasting. Tour was very enjoyable! Highly Recommend!
You really get a variety of foods on this tour and some wonderful information about the history of the foods and restaurants
Fantastic tour. Dylan, as a local, was very knowledgable. Food was delicious. One of the best tours we’ve done.
This was an excellent food tasting tour of the French Quarter. Our guide Mike was very friendly, energetic and an expert in the history of New Orleans and its food scene. He took us to a variety of places representing the classic cuisine of New Orleans. From Cajun Gumbo (distinct from Creole style), to a sauce market with incredible variety, to a praline store, to place with authentic Po Boy and muffletta sandwiches and boudin balls, and finally to a creole seafood restaurant for awesome red beans and rice and banana bread pudding. We even returned to that restaurant later that evening. This experience was well worth the price!
Best tour ever. Lots of fun facts and history. Food was delightful. Our tour guide kept it super fun and light.
My husband and I had the best time. After the tour we went back to several of the places we stopped at on our tour because it was so good!
Wonderful experience. Perfect portion sizes that allowed us to sample several dishes. Ben was an excellent guide with local knowledge, history and personal stories. All but the last stop were very intimate settings that allowed us to hear well and enjoy the tour and each others company.
Excellent tour! Our guide was so knowledgeable - not just about the history of New Orleans, but also the history of the cuisine, different ingredients and preparations used throughout time and by different cooks, and how the foods became part of New Orleans history. Great day!
Doctor Gumbo (aka Dillon) was an amazing guide - lots of interesting history of NOLA and its people and how they influenced the food of the region. One of the best we have even done : 5⭐️
Food tour is worth the money because history of Spanish, French and Ireland people is foundational behind the food of New Orleans and the great food experience.
Don't eat anything before you go... there is so much to eat during this tour, we didn't eat dinner that night. Dylan aka dr. Gumbo was amazing!!! Hands down, the BEST guide. He spoke clearly and confidently with lots of enthusiasm. What a nice man. You can tell he loves this city and the history that goes with it.
come hungry. it was an awesome experience. Your learn about the history of the different cuisines here.
Excellent food & history tour. Our guide, Mike, was very funny, knowledgeable and friendly. The food was almost too much! Loved it all! Save room for the dessert at the end!
So much food! You will walk away with a stomach so full you will not be hungry for the rest of the day! Mike was an excellent tour guide!! Interesting, informative and funny! A nice variety of local favorites. Everything was delicious especially the dessert at the end, Bananas Foster bread pudding with caramel sauce over ice cream. Absolutely amazing. I highly recommend this tour.
This was a fantastic tour with an incredibly knowledgeable guide in Dylan. He provided a wonderful overview of the history of the city and the influence on food and culture.
Dillon was our tour guide. He was super knowledgeable about Louisiana and New Orleans history. I loved the mix of food and history and the food was great. I would definitely recommend.
Ben was a wealth of information on the history, culture, and cuisine of NOLA. We thoroughly enjoyed the places we visited. The food was varied and delicious. Our favorite was the gumbo served with potatoes instead of rice (interesting backstory!) and the NOLA sauce shop. Highly recommend this experience if you are looking to get a feel for the French Quarter and its cuisine and history.
We had a blast on this tour! The food was amazing, and the guide was funny and interesting! Highly recommend this tour!
Shout out to Mike he not only knew the history of New Orleans but he wanted to make sure we had the best food experience while we were on the tour and for the rest of our trip with great recommendations for the most authentic places to eat.
Food tour was great! The food was delicious and our guide was knowable about the history. It was a pleasure to not only enjoy the food, but to learn about the history of New Orleans.
Mike was fabulous ~ entertaining and informative keeping history light and fun. I've done 3 'Foodie' tours in NOLA and Mike was the best by far. Variety of foods were great w generous portions.
Beth was fabulously entertaining. The food tour covered off on all the ‘big ticket items’ of New Orleans’ culinary treats. The history component (how all the influences came together and adapted in this climate and environment) was really interesting.
I was lucky to have beth as our guide, who was funny, knowledgeable, and open to our questions. I would do a tour with her again if I ever have the opportunity.
We learned so much about New Orleans that has made the rest of our trip that much more amazing! Food was delicious and our tour guide was amazing. Recommend this 500%! Laissez les bons temps rouler!
The tour guide Meg! was great/ very knowledgeable. The food at the fourth stop/ Nola pig. Not so good.
Our tour guide was “Doctor Gumbo” a local who grow in the area. Very knowledgeable and we had a great experience! The restaurant on the tour stops were very friendly and the food was very good.
Our tour guide, Beth, was highly knowledgeable about the history of New Orleans and the history and composition of the types of food available there. The itinerary is varied so you get a taste of a variety of foods, from main courses to desserts, as well as a stop at a hot sauce specialty store. I had two or three of the best Cajun and creole dishes that I have personally experienced. Highly recommended. Do not eat anything before the tour!
Mike did a great job with tempo to allow us to eat, talk, walk, then eat again w/o being overlly stuffed. He showed a love and knowledge of New Orleans.
Ben was super knowledgeable about the food, history and culture of NOLA. We had a great time tasting all the foods and hearing about the history. Highly recommend this tour.
Beth was a FABULOUS guide. I chose this tour specifically because it included boudin, and some other quintessential NOLA eats you won't see on other tours. I enjoyed Beth's passion for the history of the city and how it has shaped the food and culture. As a plus- everything was delicious. Highly recommend this tour.
It was a very nice tour. Meg did an awesome job sharing the history of Nola with us. And we really enjoyed the food.
Beth was absolutely incredible! She was engaging, knowledgeable, and hilarious. She explained the history of buildings we were passing on our tour, the history of how New Orleans came to have their iconic food culture, and so many other anecdotes about this rich city! The food was all wonderful, we even made our way back to one of the spots (Nola Poboys) to try some more of their menu. Don’t skip out on this tour when you’re in the city. Thanks again, Beth!
Our tour guide, Beth, was amazing! The food was above expectations and Beth’s knowledge of history was on point;) One of my favorite tours ever.
Great way to taste the best of local foods!
This was a great food tour! Our guide Beth did a wonderful job describing the historical evolution of the region and it’s cuisine, while keeping all members of the group engaged. The food samples were diverse, delicious and plentiful. You will not leave hungry!
The guy was very informative and friendly and was a very great trip. Me and my wife had a wonderful time and recommended for anybody going there.
What a great experience. Our guide, Dylan was the best, he explained the history of New Orleans as well as the origin of many of the delicious dishes we were served. The sites he chose were unique and the food was so good. We did not feel rushed at the establishments we visited and had time to get to know the other guests in our group. It was well worth the price of admission.
