Excellent tour by Laura filled with facts, stories, and humor. While the focus is largely on the Duparc family and the plantation operation and history of the time, they include and do not gloss over the role and experience of those who were enslaved there.
Joseph was our tour guide and gave an exceptional presentation of four generations of a family that lived on the plantation. An extremely interesting presentation.
What a wonderful experience! Mark was so informative with all of the specifics. Highly recommend to everyone.
Tour guide Laura was kind of rushing. Have detailed info about the Creole family but no fascinating facts about the slaves. I had to constantly ask which artifact original. She explained nothing about what certain historical pieces until I asked about them. Do I recommend? If you have nothing else to do.
Such an incredible yet sad story of how the Creole, French and Americans lived and survived on a sugar plantation. Dated back to the 1700’s - 1800’s. We travelled with Fantasy RV Tours.
Miriam was our guide and she was excellent. We learned a lot during this tour. The various stories were very interesting.
Just perfect. Our guide was very knowledgable and able to answer all questions
Our guide, Joseph who has been with the plantation for decades is a masterful orator. He takes you through the personal lives of four generations of people living and working on the plantation in a way that gives dignity and respect to those who spent theor lives in servitude. This tour is a raw, passionate illustration of plantation life focusing on the political, financial, moral, and societal influences and how they formed part of American and Creole history. Well worth the money and time to come and experience a part of history that is disappearing. Bring a sun hat, water and a fan.
We felt very lucky to have Logan as our tour guide. He has an easy storytelling style of sharing the history of the plantation, with stories and anecdotes about the enslaved lives and the owners. We learned a lot and appreciated his time.
A very informative and well-planned tour. Laura is a must see for anyone considering visiting River Road Plantations. The cost was cheap, the presentation was exceptional and there were no regrets.
Very knowledgeable tour guide!
This was a well executed tour. My tour guide, Kristyn was very professional, well informed and well spoken. She answered my questions with detail and eloquence. Her knowledge was exquisite. I will definitely recommend
We really enjoyed this tour - even our teenagers did as well. Our tour guide, Diana, was very informative, kept the tour moving along, but also took the time to answer all of the group’s questions.
Our Guide (Miariam)? Was very knowledgeable and did an amazing job. I took my kids on Juneteenth to learn their history and where some of our ancestors may have came from. Would love to come back to do The Union Soldier tour.
It was a great experience we had a good time.
Very informative. I loved the history of the women. The information on the slaves was sobering but necessary and important to hear.
We got there a little early and were glad we did as it gave us time to tour the museum and gift shop before the tour. The museum is very informative. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide; and she told us how this was one of the largest plantations on the Mississippi. We toured the house. The kitchen area was not attached to the house. We saw where it used to be. We toured the slave quarters. It is a well preserved plantation.
A good historical lesson, very interesting
Brilliant and thought-provoking tour of this beautiful plantation. Our tour guide, Andrea, was wonderful and spoke with such knowledge and passion. Well worth the hassle of hiring a car for the day. We thoroughly enjoyed the day (if enjoy is the right word)!
Very poor experience. Our young mexican guide did not know much about the history and could not answer any questions outside what someone had taught her. We had been to several of the plantations in the area and had a pretty good understanding of the history. Her answers did not make much sense at all when we asked questions outside of her speech. I felt like she did a very big disservice to the history of the area.
Very interesting to hear history of the plantation. Tour was well organized and gave time to see everything.
Miriam is an extremely knowledgeable historian and gave us an in-depth history of the plantation family and slaves. Really appreciate her expertise and enlightening us as to what happened at this particular plantation.
Fantastic guided tour by the bilingual Amelia. Provided a vivid and real history of the plantation, ensuring that we learnt the experiences of not just the owners and their family, but of the enslaved people as well. Never patronising but always informative. Sobering.
Fun and very interesting bit of history, and how cotton farms and cotton gins slowly modernized.
Wonderful experience, the guide Jaquelin was excellent
Our guide Logan was phenomenal and very well versed on the history of the Laura Plantation, the facility and the staff were amazing.
This was a great, educational tour. Mark was very knowledgeable and a great guide.
So educational, really understand the life and history that was lived here.
This was a fabulous trip experience. We had a fantastic tour operator .. Laura!!! She was not only knowledgeable in the history , but her humor made it a memorable visit. We could have spent all afternoon with her learning about this plantation and it’s caretakers.
Excellent personalized tour for our family. The guide has in depth knowledge of the history of the plantation and shared his deep understanding of the family legacy over generations of owners. He explained the origins of creole culture and history through the engaging story of the plantation.
Kristyn did an excellent job sharing info regarding the Laura Plantation and its historical and cultural importance . She brought us thru both the house and grounds sharing details professionally and objectively. Well done!
Great tour. Our guide told us how it was. Fist the challenges of family life for the owners and more about the building and its history while going around the house. It was firmly structured...with particular membe4s brought your your attention...then as you move through the estate... the unsettling history of life back then unfolds powerfully. I bought a book from their gift shop called Let us decend by Jesmyn Ward... I can't put it down, I feel I already know these characters, having been around the Laura plantation, having heard stories of slave family experience over generations, having seen listened to the guide, sensed her contained emotion while looking at the inventories of slaves financial values it's adding layers of texture and context to the injustice of slavery. My only regret is not having time to go on to The,Witney plantation as well as the Laura Plantation for an even deeper dive into history.
A very informative and thought provoking tour. Well worth it. Guide was very knowledgeable
Meredith did a wonderful job, she answered many questions from multiple people and was rattled. She was amazing!
Such an amazing tour! Our guide (Krystan?) was so kind and knowledgeable. Definitely one of the best tours I have ever taken.❤️
I have been to the Laura Plantation twice now and I could go again tomorrow! The guides do a great job of explaining how life was for both the plantation owners and the enslaved workers. The first person accounts from Laura’s memoir really make the tour personal and emotional. It’s such an amazing experience that can’t be missed! I will recommend Laura Plantation every time!
The tour was informative and lovely. Staff was amazing. The gardens and grounds were beautiful. You come away with mixed feelings between the beauty of the place and the tragedy of the events. Good for Laura for walking away from it all. My 14 year old daughter came home with an appreciation of her education and other priviledges. March and early morning were the perfect combination for beautiful cool weather.
Very informative tour. I appreciated the small size of the tour group, as there was plenty of time to ask questions and it was easy to see everything. I also enjoyed the small museum, which was packed with interesting information. The gift shop was also very nice and had a lot of great books, local food items and gift items. Highly recommend!
Anna our tour guide was amazing! A history graduate and she was able to make the tour exciting and interesting. I definitely recommend this experience.
Great tour. Very educational. The tour guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. Really enjoyed touring all the old places and seeing how they lived those days.
I had originally hesitated booking back to back plantation tours ...concerned it might be history overload for my family, but to the contrary, Laura plantation was a perfect complement to our tour of Oak Alley, just down the road. Our guide, Laura ( seriously, a fond coincidence!) was such a passionate storyteller! She brought the plantation to life by sharing the origin stories of the families who had dwelled there as well as the slaves who had built the place..brick by brick, plank by plank. I have arthritis, so it was challenging to stand and walk through a one hour plus tour, but my swollen feet and knees were well worth the experience. There was the occasional chair or bench on the way. Thankfully, the house is air-conditioned. The grounds has beautiful, fragrant flowers. Don't miss the lilac tree in the courtyard. Allergy sufferers: take your antihistamines.! Still, I highly recommend it for history buffs with a penchant for storytelling.
This Plantation is well worth visiting,as it gives you a lot of information and history as to who owned the house and about the slaves too. Very interesting and informative. The guide was very knowledgeable and could answer any questions we had.
Chose this tour because it was focused on "history". The history of the original family was entertaining but the guide provided no info on who owned it after the original owners and how the property is conserved or publicly offered now. The tour guide seemed annoyed to be giving the tour and her virtue signaling over the evils of white plantation-owning men dominated the tour. She seemed uninterested in telling about the sugar caning process, daily life, or reflecting on the WHY behind the social constructs of the time - providing objectivity with the information. She seemed resentful of questions from anyone in the group, so I asked none. We were rushed through and denied access to take photos on the grounds other than rushed shots as we rapidly passed by things on the grounds. She even bemoaned the lack of funds for restoration and upkeep, citing the downturn in tourism as the reason. I appreciate the efforts of those that preserve history so others can see it, so I gave the site a 4, but I'd give the tour a 1.
It was absolutely beautiful! Gave you a tour inside and around the property while listening to the depths of Creole Life on River Road. This is a must stop place when you are visiting Louisiana
Amazing experience, comfortable scheduling, very professional and passionated tour guide, she did fantastic job to make the tour informational and interesting. All staffs are very friendly, made our day in NOLA. Definitely worth to check it out! Highly recommended :)
Amazing piece of history on this plantation tour. Joseph was a terrific tour guide, so knowledgeable and authentic. No sugar-coating of historical facts.
This is our third plantation tour and by far my favorite. Our tour guide Pam made the history of this colorful, powerful family come alive by telling the plantation’s history as if she knew the family personally. Pam gave each family member personality and life through her storytelling style and knowledge of the plantation, and Louisiana history. I would take this tour again just to pick up portions I know I may have missed. Thank you Pam and the rest of the Laura plantation staff for an unforgettable experience!
Very very clever and interesting journey. Joseph was very convincing and the History of this family and personals was fascinating I highly recommend that everyone pay a visit to this plant
Beautiful surroundings, friendly people, and we learned a lot! You get a very interesting picture of all the different kinds of people who lived on the plantation, both free and enslaved.
