My spouse and I really enjoyed our tour with Glenn. He is very knowledgeable about the cemetery's history and does a great job bringing its stories to life. His enthusiasm for the subject is evident throughout, and we appreciated the fascinating details and historical context he shared along the way. It was a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

Our Metairie Cemetery tour was by far my favorite experience on our first visit to New Orleans. Our tour guide, Glenn, was so knowledgeable and patient with all of our questions. It was a long tour that felt like it went by fast because Glenn kept our interest throughout the whole time. He told us so much about the history of New Orleans, the cemetery itself, as well as the historically-relevant people who were interred there. It was perfect for our first full day in New Orleans because we felt so connected to the city’s history after our tour with Glenn. The cemetery itself is beautiful and well-maintained. We enjoyed photographing the classic tombs and mausoleums, as well as the stunning landscaping at Metairie Cemetery. We preferred booking through Save Our Cemeteries because we felt that they would show the upmost respect for the history and the dead of New Orleans past. Worth every penny!
I felt that I learned so much on this tour. It is a beautiful cemetery with lovely grounds. My guide was Glenn. He was very informative about the history of the cemetery and those that “rest” here. I highly recommend this tour.
Our tour guide, Tracy, was incredibly knowledgeable, witty, and funny. She took her time explaining everything to us, and in such a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, we learned so much about Louisiana’s history and the fascinating stories behind the cemetery.
This was a great tour! We wanted to visit New Orleans’ beautiful and historic cemeteries to learn about the history, culture and architecture. We were specifically looking for a tour that was history-focused and not sensationalist in a “spooky cemetery” kind of way. Save our Cemeteries was exactly that! Our guide Dana was knowledgeable, entertaining, witty and would detail to spend a couple hours with. I would definitely recommend!
Amazing experience thanks to our guide Glenn. He combines in-depth knowledge with an engaging delivery and a wonderful personality. Our teenagers loved it and talked about what the learned for days. You can feel how much this organization cares for what they do and proceeds directly support the cemeteries.
This is the second time for me coming to Nola, and yet the first time for my wife. A friend recommended the Viator app for scheduling certain tours. This tour came up highly rated, and it did not disappoint! Liz, our guide really was able to share the rich history of this cemetery. She did a nice job on our personal tour. Although the weather didn’t necessarily cooperate, we are so glad that we did it.
Glenn's knowledge was encyclopedic, yet his delivery was like listening to an engaging old friend. Since most of the group were in a book club that had just read Horse and Lexington, he did a deep dive into that topic. Memorable, and hugely useful to a fellow tour guide.
This was a wonderful tour. My guide, Glen Schiro, was thoughtful enough to reach out to me the day prior to give me the option to meet earlier because of the heat (which was a great suggestion). Mr. Schiro was knowledgeable in all aspects of the cemetery placing it's origin and growth in historic context, explaining the changing ownership over the lifetime of the cemetery, and cultural burial customs. His stories of the artistry and types of tombs were informative and concise. And of course, the stories of "notables" buried there were well-told with both humor and reverence as applicable. I look forward to doing another tour at some time in the future and also (if I can make the time) to wander through the cemetery pausing, reflecting, and admiring. I will recommend this to anyone who shares an interest in cemeteries and history.
Walking the grounds, cracking jokes, and learning the history of the Metairie Cemetery was so much fun. Glenn was the absolute best tour guide!
Walking the grounds of the Metarie cemetery with our tour guide, Glenn, was a highlight of my many visits to New Orleans. Our guide was fantastic and knew so much history of who was at the cemetery. It is of the most beautiful cemeteries. If you’re considering a cemetery tour don’t miss this one. None of the tourists and crowds, just a wealth of knowledge and passion from the people who are preserving these historic sites.
I wholeheartedly recommend taking the Historic Metairie Cemetery tour with Glenn. He does an excellent job providing a fascinating overview of the vast history of the cemetery while mixing in the personal family details relevant to many exceptional graves. The artistry and sheer opulence are incredible to view. The gorgeous surroundings and the never boring historical details make it a must do experience in New Orleans. This is one of those rare tours that has something of interest for everyone.
The tour was excellent and Tracy provided a fantastic tour experience filled with interesting architectural information combined with local history and flair showing the deep connections of the people to the city over time. We enjoyed the tour immensely and recommend it highly.
I truly enjoyed our cemetery tour with Glenn. He knows his stuff! Metairie Cemetery is very different from other New Orleans cemeteries as it has beautiful oak trees, larger grounds and stunning contemporary above ground tombs. We drove around for a bit after our walk as I wanted to spend more time as my grandparents and great grandparents are buried there.
Glenn provided a very informative and entertaining tour of Metairie Cemetery. It was fascinating to learn the about the history of the property and the lives of the ‘residents’ laid to rest there. Glenn has a passion and knowledge for this amazing place. Note that there is plenty of shade, so even on a hot August day, it was comfortable. I highly recommend.
The experience with Tracey was amazing. She was so knowledgeable and funny. We enjoyed that she encouraged questions and also quizzed us on the different style of burials we saw. Threw her we also learned more about the history of new orleans. Highly recommend!
I did the metairie cemetery tour with glenn. i was the only one on the tour and glenn was super knowledgeable and kind. he was ready to answer any questions imaginable and had no problem curating the tour based on energy levels as it was extremely hot/humid. i got to peek inside a mausoleum and hear about how the cemetery used to be a horse racing track. Glenn was super communicative as well. The fee goes towards preserving the cemeteries and i’m glad i was able to see it knowing some of the others were closed/owned by tour companies. highly recommend this especially if you’re interested in history as well!
My wife and I took the cemetery tour on an especially hot day in New Orleans with Tracy. She was very knowledgeable and we had a nice small group who didn’t seem to mind that we were there for the Photography as much as the history. Tracy hit the prominent highlights of the cemetery and sprinkled in some nice stories about vampires and the history of the area. Our particular Tour also featured three interns who added extra color to the commentary and were fun to be with. Two suggestions we have is that the Tour operator make sure there’s cold water for the guests on hot days. Also, that the specific meeting point be part of the booking instructions. We had taken an Uber to this very large cemetery and it was difficult to find the beginning point. All in, it was an enjoyable experience and recommend this one. We got some great photos and now know a little bit more about the cemetery, It’s inhabitants and life in New Orleans!
Today we went on a great 2 hour tour with Tracy from Save Our Cemeteries. Tracy made us feel comfortable before the tour even started and continued to keep us engaged throughout the entirety of the tour. We walked around a great part of Metairie Cemetery. Tracy showed us some very important figures in the cemetery and educated us on which tombs were which (Vaults, Mausoleum and Copings). Our tour consisted of 5 people and we traveled through the newer and older sides of the cemetery. We got to see tombs of all kinds and were educated on why certain ones were how they were, meaning why one tomb would be so big and why this tomb looks so different from the others. Tracy even used pictures to give tourists of the cemetery an easier view of what each person should be recognized for. In conclusion the tour was really worth while and hopefully if we ever need to go again we get to do it with Tracy.
What an informative tour! We learned so much! It was enjoyable to walk and take in all the beauty! Cassandra was wonderful!!!!!
So amazing and informative! Was a beautiful place and I’m so happy I got to see it with Cassandra as my tour guide! I will never forget this experience!
This tour was amazing! Dana was our guide. She is extremely knowledgeable and so nice. She answered all of our questions thoroughly and clearly cares about the cemeteries and the work that Save Our Cemeteries is doing.
We had a very informative - respectful - and insightful tour of Metairie cemetery this morning, led by Glen, our tour guide, who was just amazing!! I've always wanted to see the "Weeping Angel" - it is very important that we keep these monuments for future generations - please go visit and support - and learn!!
Glenn was, by far, one of the best tour guides I've ever had for any tour anywhere! The cemetery was diverse, beautiful, and Glenn's narrative was comprehensive and fascinating.
We took the Metairie cemetery tour with our host, Glenn. He was very knowledgeable about the cemetery and the surrounding areas, and offered great insight into how cemeteries and burial works in New Orleans. There was a lot of walking, but there’s plenty of shade and some opportunities to sit down. Probably a good idea to bring water, as none is available during the tour. Plenty of famous people interred here, including author Anne Rice, which was a highlight of the tour. Overall, I’d say this is a must see if you’re at all interested in cemeteries or history.
Glenn was an amazing tour guide! He was funny, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. His passion was felt throughout the entire tour and he ensured we stayed in the shade the whole time. We learned so much about the history of New Orleans in such a short time. Thanks Glenn :)
Glenn was a great tour guide! He was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the history of the cemetery.
Fantastic!!!! Our tour guide, Glenn Schiro, was so entertaining and informative and you could tell he has a passion for this tour.
We learned so much on tour, allowing us to see the city with a deeper appreciation. Glenn was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable about how the cemetery's history relates to the history of New Orleans past and present. He answered all of our questions and was very considerate of finding us shade in the heat. I appreciate that the money from our tickets goes to preserving the city's rich history. Would highly recommend!
The guide was very knowledgeable, provided great anecdotes about the "residents."
Dana and Melissa were wonderful guides with deep knowledge and understanding of the cemetery. We learned so much about the history and culture of New Orleans. It was well-worth it. We would definitely book another tour with Save Our Cemetaries!
Liz Reed, our guide, was very knowledgeable. Her presentation was engaging & interesting. I recommend this tour - in addition to being entertained, you’ll learn quite a bit about the history of NOLA cemeteries.
I signed up yesterday for a tour this morning after learning about the fantastic work being done by Save Our Cemeteries. I was the only one on the tour and Glenn, my tour guide, answered all of my questions during the two hour tour. Glenn is extremely knowledgeable about New Orleans history and its people, and you will learn about the Mardi Gras krews, the old racetrack, burial traditions, and much more. I have been to other smaller cemeteries in New Orleans, but this one is worth visiting because of its beauty, long history, and famous residents. There is a good amount of shade in the cemetery but do bring water and a hat/sunglasses with you. Communication was excellent. The confirmation email contains info about where to meet, and Glenn also texted me additional information the day before. I took the bus which, along with the streetcar, ends at the. Cemeteries Transit Center. The transit center is on the other side of the expressway, so getting to the cometary is a good 15 minute walk. For most people, driving or taking ride share would probably make the most sense.
Glenn was an amazing tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and the entire group learned a lot. This was our favorite tour during our time in New orleans out of the 5 we took.
Our tour guide Glenn is a local gentleman. He is very knowledgeable and well studied. He combined great research with deep lived experience. He cares about the city and its landmarks. He was charming and kind. He answered all of my questions.
We had a wonderful tour experience with our guide, Glenn. He had deep knowledge of NOLA history and who's who that made the tour even more interesting. Length of time was just right and the grounds are beautiful to walk around. Highly recommend this tour by Save Our Cemeteries!
just a wonderful tour! the history of NOLA is buried right there! Our guide was a hoot and we appreciated his knowledge of NOLA history particularly the history of the canal and the relationships between the business history --movers and shakers--and the graveyard
Would have preferred a smaller group. Maybe in a large golf cart instead of walking. The tour guide was lovely and knowledgeable, but sometimes hard to hear.
So much to learn. Loved the knowledgable guie, the amazing stories, and hanging in the cemetary for a few hours! If you like history, this is a great way to see it in a different light.
SOC and Preservation Resource Center are engaged in efforts to preserve the special heritage of New Orleans. The tour led by Glenn Schiro was excellent. He is a lifelong New Orleanian and has a tremendous amount of knowledge about New Orleans history and culture. Take the tour!
This is a long, leisurely walking tour full of history and respectful anecdotes. No ghost stories or melodrama. Plan to go early in the day when the sun isn't high, although the cemetery is mostly flat you want to take advantage of as much shade as possible.
My mom and I loved our tour with Glenn through Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery. Glenn's passion for the history of New Orleans and his fascinating stories about the histories of the various people who are interred there made the tour fascinating. Glenn really brought the history alive and revealed how much a cemetery and the burial practices of an area can reveal about its society. I was also happy to give my money to an organization that cares about preserving the cemeteries and their history.
Due to heavy rain, the tour was canceled on Sunday. The communication from "Save our Cemeteries" was excellent. They gave us the choice between a refund or the tour on Monday. We chose the tour and were given a fascinating insight into the cemetery's history. Our guide, Glen, was fantastic!
This was a great way to spend a Sunday morning! My tour guide, Glen, was very knowledgable and able to answer any questions. He even took the time to find out what I had done while I was visiting New Orleans and tie my experiences into the cemtery tour. I would without a doubt book another tour with Glen in the future.
Glenn was a very informative guide who clearly loves the history of cemeteries and New Orleans history!
This was such a great tour, Glen is very knowledgeable and engaging! Beautiful cemetery as well, hardly felt like it was 2 hours long I could have walked around for hours. Glen answered all of our questions, and had some interesting stories to tell about everything that we saw. I would definitely take another tour. Thanks for a great experience Glen. I hope anybody who’s considering going on a cemetery tour does it with Save Our Cemeteries.
Glenn was a fantastic & informative tour guide! Metairie is huge, so I doubt that the whole place can be toured with background information in even a day! He had some nice personal touches & kept it all human, which I appreciated!
Glen was an amazing guide! He clearly has a passion for and personal connection to this place, it's stories and the history of New Orleans. He never missed an opportunity to make a connection to each guest's home town when it arose, making everyone feel engaged. It was especially exciting for me to see the graves of New Orleanians who I was reading about in Empire of Sin. I've been to many cemeteries across the world and Metairie takes a top spot. It's also great to know that our ticket purchase goes toward helping to preserve this special place.
We're a local family wanting to learn more about Metairie Cemetery. Our Guide, Glenn Schiro, was extremely knowledgeable and very enthusiastic! He was truly interested in his subject and happy to answer all our questions. He made a "city of the dead" come alive with stories and history.
We booked a private tour of Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery directly through Save Our Cemeteries so that we could go on the day that worked best for us during our short stay. They were super accommodating, and it wasn't prohibitively expensive for our group of 6. Our guide, Glenn, met us by the Law Enforcement Memorial and waited while we got our mom situated on her mobility scooter. He was patient with our pacing and questions throughout the tour, and thoughtful with where he stopped (shade!). He showed us the final resting places of famous families, but also did a good job of pointing out different architectural styles and building materials. Glenn is a lifelong New Orleanian and had much to share both in terms of historical knowledge and personal connections. We learned so much, not just about the history and personalities of New Orleans, but also about burial traditions and the funeral industry. It was an amazing morning. Would highly recommend!
