Private Guided Full Day Downton Abbey Tour From London

We had an all day excursion with Barry from London to the Bampton and Highclere Castle region. Barry made everything simple for us, by providing door-to-door service from our London hotel. He is an excellent driver, and his hospitality and friendliness are top-notch. What made the day extra special was his knowledge of the region and love for it. We had a magical day.

My family and I had a wonderful day visiting Highclere Castle and other beautiful Downton Abbey hot spots. He was incredibly knowledgeable about Downton Abbey info, the history of all the areas we visited, and London and UK history overall. He was prepared with pictures from the show/movies at different sites so you could remember specific scenes as they related to the various locations. It was a delight to get to know him on our journey in his black cab. Barry was timely the entire day -- on time arrival, recommended times spent at each spot, and even provided helpful hints on shortening our delicious lunch stop (the British do like a long mealtime). Highly recommend Barry for any tours he runs! As Barry Tours notes in their description, keep in mind that your Highclere Castle entrance tickets need to be purchased in advance, directly by you, and they are not always open and/or available. I think it would still be worthwhile even if you could only “visit” the castle from across the lawn, but you would miss out on the castle, grounds and the tea, dining and gift shop areas.

Barry and this tour more than lived up to all of the praise I had read in prior reviews here. Barry was very prompt in picking us up and very well informed about London, the Cotswolds and Highclere Castle. He seemed to know everyone we encountered in the villages and the stops we made to visit important locations from the series. The tour was thoughtfully laid out to immerse us in the whole Downton Abbey vibe. I cannot recommend it enough!

It was a fabulous day ! Barry pick us up right in front of our hotel . From start to finish he was very accommodating. Very informative about the info on Downton Abby & had photos to refresh our memory about the village locations & St Marys Church . Enjoyed the little stops in the villages & of course Highclere Castle . He took great photos of us at all locations so wewill have those memories. Will not hesitate to use his service again if we come back to the area ! 5 stars all the way , Thank you Barry for adding a great day to our vacation!!

Wonderful dream trip for our family. It was so personalized and flexible for our family's interests. Our driver even took our packages that we bought at the gift shop back to the car for us and took pictures for us as well. We had a blast!

We had an absolutely fantastic experience on our Private Guided Full Day Downton Abbey Tour from London! Our tour guide, Barry, was first-rate and provided so much more value than just a standard trip to the Downton Abbey villages. During our transit through London, he took the time to point out and expertly narrate the sites along the way. He also provided a wonderful, detailed history about various Cotswold villages both before and after our stop in Bampton. To top it all off, the lunch reservation he made for us was absolutely spot on. It was a lovely local restaurant that served delicious food and perfectly accommodated our party of six. Andrew was our tour guide. He picked us up at our hotel near Heathrow, giving us a bit more time at some stops, including an unplanned one in Oxford. Andrew was engaging, full of information, and flexible towards our interests. We knew in advance that we could not see Highclere because it was closed for the season, but he substituted that stop with Blenheim Castle, where we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon high tea. Andrew had clips from Downton Abbey for each of the stops so that we could see what was filmed at these stops. Overall it was a fabulous trip and I highly recommend using Barry Tours and Andrew as a guide.

This was such a great tour! Our driver helped us so much from helping us find where to book the tickets for inside the castle, to taking us to some of the most charming places that were in the movie. She helped us store all our gift bags and even brought us water and chocolate. She was so thoughtful and kind. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Steven Cahill was a tour guide from London to Highclere Castle. He did a fantastic job entertaining us with Downton Abbey trivia and all the fun things about the shows. He got us there in plenty of time to take our pictures at various locations throughout the property and bought us some biscuits from the gift shop. We had a great day!

Paula was a friendly, knowledgeable and professional guide who took us to various Cotswolds villages as well as places within the villages where different episodes of Downton Abbey were filmed. Paula went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and had ample time to look around.

What a wonderful day in the English countryside! Our driver, Frank, picked us up right outside our London hotel and carried us away in his spacious taxi (plenty of space for 4 adults! Even provided waters for us) We toured around various Downton Abbey filming sights to which Frank was very knowledgeable about and explained the history behind each spot. He also gave us the opportunity to stop at a few extra historic sights along the way that weren’t on our designated tour itinerary which was AMAZING! It was like two tours in one. He knew so much about the significance and the history behind all the sights. We stopped at a pub along the way for a delicious lunch with beautiful garden views before we ventured onward. I can’t say enough about Frank, our guide. He patiently and enthusiastically answered all of our questions and we just thoroughly enjoyed his company! It was like touring around England with a friend. Highly recommend this tour and any others with Frank!! You will not be disappointed. Well done Barry tours! Thanks for the amazing memories Frank!

We spent 7 days in the London area and participated in a total of 3 private tours. This one was absolutely the best! We are huge Downton Abbey fans, so this tour was at the top of our bucket list. I knew it was going to be fun, but little did I know it was going to be the best thing we did our entire time in London - and that is thanks to our driver and tour guide, Barry. He was super friendly and funny. He was very knowledgeable and started providing tidbits of information as soon as we were seated in his vehicle. He has been a cab driver in the London area for 30 years so he knows just about everything there is to know about London. He took us to beautiful areas that were not listed on the itinerary and we even got to meet some of the people that he has come to know at these places. He happily offered to take group photos of us at tourist points and even made sure we got to Starbucks on our way since we did leave our hotel for the tour before the hotel restaurant opened! We are planning to come back next year and will certainly book more tours. Hopefully we get Barry again! I know 5 stars are the norm, but I'd give Barry and this tour a million star rating if I could!

paula was amazing!! she met all our needs and adapted if we wanted to do something different. we asked her to do a few things different leave early later, etc. at different places and she did whatever we needed. She was knowledgeable and met our needs.

Barry was our driver for a private tour for a group of four adults going to Downton Abbey. His knowledge was amazing. He made our full day tour very enjoyable. Barry also showed us the villages that were used to film the series. He took photos of our group throughout the day which will provide wonderful memories of our day. Great trip to the Cotswolds. Barry did an amazing job showing me all the downtown locations. He was very knowledgeable about the area and accommodated my shopping whims when requested. A highlight for me was lunch at the bell pub. The door to door service, made the day excursion enjoyable and convenient. I hope to return to London soon and partake in another Barry tour !

The best tour we have done. Unfortunately Highclere Castle wasn’t open on our tour day but Barry made our day fantastic and made up for it . He is a fantastic guide who made us feel like part of his family for the whole day . I highly recommend Barry’s Tours ,you won’t be disappointed. Great day. We also did the Highclere Castle tour with high tea which took three hours. Barry Ivens folded the rest of the day around that experience and he was a joy to be with. My family loved the day.

If I could give Barry one million stars, I would! Despite Highclere not being open to the public the day we booked our tour (boo!), Barry made our day and adventures so wonderful. We stopped in several villages in the Cotswolds to shop and he took us to a garden center cafe for lunch. He never rushed us at all, but instead allowed us to meander through the towns at our own pace. The highlight, of course, was stopping at the “Downton Abbey Village,” where we saw several locations used during the show’s filming. He was so kind to take pictures of our group, even without us asking. At one point during our drive, I started feeling carsick (hello windy, bumpy English streets!), and he had no problem pulling over to let me walk and breathe some fresh air. My only complain was that it all had to end. :-( We loved our day with Barry and would highly recommend his private day tour to anyone! You won’t be sorry you booked with him.

Barry was awesome! My husband and I specifically chose to visit London so we could see Highclere Castle. This was the highlight of our trip. Barry was very knowledgeable and also great company. After the castle, he took us to see several charming villages where they filmed other scenes from Downton Abbey. He was able to recreate some of the magic from the show. My mom wanted to see the Cotswolds and the villages of Downton Abbey. We got so much more. Unfortunately Highclere was closed but Barry was open to consider other castle options and villages that filmed my mom’s other favorite shows including Father Brown. We emailed back and forth with ideas and places. With it being private, having the personal touch was key to this flexibility and making it so much more special. Barry knows his history and was a great conversationalist that really made the difference in the day not to mention mom is an older lady who’s not so quick on her feet which is an issue with the bigger group tours. Having the small taxi also helps navigate into villages that would’ve never been possible with the bigger tours. It was worth it and again, thank you Barry for a great day!

My siblings and I are huge fans of Downton Abbey, and we couldn’t have had a better experience! From the journey itself, in a comfortable taxi, accompanied by Barry, a very knowledgeable, friendly, and kind guide, who gave us the time we needed to appreciate the landscapes and places we visited. Highclere Castle is the icing on the cake of the day, but I’d like to point out that all the other stops are also extremely interesting, and the scenery is breathtaking. This experience is highly recommended for fans of the show, but even those who aren't will be amazed.

I was alone and Mr. Barry treated me like a Queen. I did the Downton Abbey tour and he was so knowledgeable of everything DA. He even took me to sights I had forgotten about. I saw everything I had hoped to and much more. Late afternoon he was talking about where we were going next and I finally said I was tired. So worth every penny I spent.

Barry provided us with a door to door, complete Downton experience. From our pickup he pointed out a few local sites of interest. After that, we experienced a wonderful tour of sites filmed in the village. We had booked a tour of the Highclere castle and ended up with the retired head guide. What a treat. Barry took such good care of me. I walk slow and sometimes on rough surfaces have an issue with balance. He was such a gentleman making sure I was alright. He was very knowledgeable of all things Downton. He took me to see sites I expected but also sites I had forgotten about from the show (Blue Swan Inn). I feel I actually got more than I was expecting.

We went to Highclere Castle and the surrounding villages. It was amazing. What added to the tour as much as anything was our guide - Barry! He was spectacular! The information he shared with us on the way back, then toured us through the villages and the patience he extended throughout was unbelievable! We would highly recommend Barry for this tour as well as any tour he is available for. He is knowledgeable, funny and extremely personable! Next time we are in London, we plan to schedule his tours!
