This tour was one of the highlights of our trip. We had high expectations, and James exceeded them. We came with a list of works we particularly wanted to see, and he effortlessly adapted the tour to our interests while sharing his remarkable knowledge of the collection. The National Gallery is a treasure in its own right, but James brought it to life for us. Highly recommended.

Itinerary
Instead of browsing the National Galley aimlessly, let your guide immerse you in the techniques and history behind some of the world’s most famous artists. You’ve heard of Seurat and da Vinci, but what do you really know about them? Learn about the painters behind the paintings as we browse our favorite works by other masters like Botticelli, Monet, Rembrandt, and Vermeer. If none of those names mean anything to you, we’ll make sure that changes by the end of the tour. The National Gallery houses paintings dating back to the 1300s all the way up through the 1900s, so there is no shortage of choice. Visit Jan van Eyck’s “The Arnolfini Portrait” or something more familiar like Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” to understand the full scope of work on display. During your tour, you'll be armed with the essential information and history needed to appreciate the more than 2300 paintings on display at one of the world’s most visited museums.

We were amazingly fortunate that we were the only two people on a tour of the National Gallery conducted by James. His approach was to use select paintings in the gallery to highlight the evolution of artwork from the Tudor Period to the development of Impressionism. He was incredibly knowledgeable and responded with clarity to our numerous questions. James was also friendly, personable and relaxed. We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with him in the National Gallery.
Simply outstanding. Carolyn was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. One of the best art tours I have ever taken.
James was an excellent tour guide. It was a very informative tour!
This was an excellent tour walking to highlights of the museum and providing history, background and perspective on the works shown. Jake was our guide and he was very knowledgeable and had great projection in the loud areas. One tip for Babylon would be to provide listening devices to help with this. Overall, a very worthwhile tour.
Becky is an extraordinary guide with exceptional knowledge of the subject matter and a passion for sharing it with the group. We loved the tour!
In The National Gallery we stood in front of many timeless treasures. Shout out for Becky, Babylon Tours... she was outstanding and took the time to put everything in context for us, and got our grandson engaged! She is an exceptional tour guide.
Our guide was great, very well studied in art and very engaging. Small group size was best as gallery was busy. The meetup spot had incorrect instructions but we allowed time for error and we made it on time. So much to see, so your was a great choice.
My husband and I greatly enjoyed this tour. Our guide, Matilda, was fabulous! Incredibly knowledgeable, engaging and clearly passionate about Art. She brought every piece to life with stories, context and insights we never would’ve discovered on our own. Her energy, clarity and depth of knowledge made this tour unforgettable. We highly recommend this tour and, especially, Matilda. 🖼️
James was incredible, best tour I’ve had.
Extremely enjoyable private tour of the National Gallery. Sacha was very knowledgeable and told the best stories about a variety of paintings in the museum
Becky is fabulous!!! She’s professional, knowledgeable, funny and informative. Her dual degrees of art and history provides the perfect mix for wonderful stories. Dorothy and Judi
We had a fabulous tour of the National Gallery. Our guide Matilda was fantastic, very knowledgeable and engaging, asking us questions and allowing us to share our opinions. The National Gallery museum can be overwhelming and this was a great way to see the highlights. Highly recommend booking this tour!
Steph was a wonderful guide! A wealth of knowledge and enthusiastic about the works of art at the National Gallery. Would recommend this to everyone!
Excellent tour with Sheldon. We got so much out of our visit to the National Gallery thanks to his excellent guiding.
Writing this review late but had an EXCEPTIONAL experience with tourguide Becky who gave a most illuminating and delightful tour of the National Gallery in London. My mother and I learned so much, and left the experience feeling lighter, more knowledgeable, and happy! Becky and Babylon Tours in general give the most memorable and detailed tours of museums. Becky was really wonderful. Back in 2023 we also had a tour with Babylon Tours of The British Museum and also had an exceptional experience. Will make sure to book with them again if we are back in London, or if we are in Paris. If you are not sure on what tourguide to book with, book with Babylon! Ask for either Becky or James.
Having experienced Babylon on several occasions, I have developed high expectations for quality and engagement. Stephanie not only met those expectations but also surpassed them with her infectious passion and profound knowledge of the subject. Her insightful backstories about the connections between artists, their works, and various historical eras truly enriched the experience. This depth of understanding transformed the dialogue into something memorable and impactful. Really valued the time spent and experience.
Matilda H was brilliant…from navigating us around the protest in Trafalgar Square to get into the museum to her carefully curated tour of the collection highlights. 2-1/2 hours (and by chance just the two of on this tour) of informed narration with a great knack for involving her guests into the give and take of art history. My non-art experienced husband was quite entertained and Matilda was at ease engaging my distractions as we walked through this historic collection.
Matilda made our time at the Nat'l Gallery both engaging and edifying. Her detailed explanations of central pieces made the stroll through the gallery come to life. Much appreciated, much recommended.
This tour was well worth the cost. Our guide was knowledgeable and made the best use out of the time we spent in the museum.
Stephanie was a great guide making the tour both informative and fun. The tour is not just about showing some pictures but rather putting them in perspective of the overall history of art and what that picture/ art represented in that history. A long tour but never a dull moment, strongly advised.
Steph was wonderful. She was full of knowledge and energy. She increased my interest in art. She explained every painting in depth and with great enthusiasm. She had us look beyond the paintings themselves. She encouraged us to express what we were thinking about each piece. She showed us how to look for clues and details that I would never have seen before this experience. I would encourage anyone to take a tour Steph is guiding .
Had a wonderful tour guide, Stephanie K, at the National Gallery of London. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for art made this a worthwhile experience. She has raised the bar on what I will expect for all guides in the future.
My guide was Stephanie K and it so happened that I was the only customer in the activity, at this time. I cannot fathom (or wish for) a better visit. Stephanie was really well prepared and the visit had like an invisible conductive wire that ensured the sequence we followed made full sense. However the guidance was extremely vivid and interesting; Steph both covered a lot of ground on and about each of the pictures we saw but even made a few detours to show me something that was just mentioned or had arisen in our conversation.
Jake was an excellent guide. He was informative and interesting. He answered our questions and engaged everyone in the group.
This was exactly the type of tour we were looking for! Jake was our guide and he was extremely knowledgeable, answering well every question we asked. And not only knowledgeable, he delivered the information in a lively and enthusiastic way. He brought to life the paintings we studied, so we could understand what each artist was trying to convey.
Jake takes the cake! So knowledgeable and well spoken, I learned so much from him. I didn’t even notice my tired feet! I recommend this tour to anyone who loves history.
First and foremost our guide, Steph, was amazing. Her knowledge and passion really came through. Large museums can be daunting and a guide really helps with focus and understanding. This tour, thanks to Steph, was fantastic! Highly recommend.
Absolutely fantastic. Our group of five was guided by Steph and I can’t say enough good things about her! She was extremely knowledgeable and guided us through the museum with a deliberate plan and point of view. We saw many “showstoppers” but she linked them beautifully and handled very well a group with different backgrounds and knowledge. Worth every penny. Excellent.
Visiting National Gallery can be overwhelming and a semi private guided tour is a good way to address that. Yet the experience can vary quite a bit based on the specific company/guide. Well, we have been extremely lucky to get Stephanie to guide us. Her friendliness, deep professionalism and true passion for arts made our experience at the Gallery one to be remembered. Stephanie guided us through the history of painting threading various painting together in an enlightening sequence, pointing out the techniques and style and philosophical transitions throughout. We could not have asked for more. Her employer should know how precious she is and maybe try to clone her :)
One of my best Museum tours ever!Matilda is a wealth of knowledge, but also very personable and gave interesting additional stories about the artwork that I never would’ve known. Highly suggest you book this tour you won’t regret it.
We took the National Gallery of London Tour while visiting London and we are so glad we did! Sheldon was our guide and he was so humorous and knowledgable about the gallery and it's contents. We told him to show us his favorite pieces and he entertained us with information and stories about some amazing works that we never would have noticed if not for him. It was an absolutely unforgettable experience. If you are lucky enough to have Sheldon as your guide, you will not regret spending the money to have him lead you through the gallery.
Our tour guide. Stephanie put her art history degree to great use with us, using the collection to graphically explain the development of painting from the 11th century through to the late impressionists. She was a one-person course in art appreciation.
Sheldon did an excellent job eloquently sharing his knowledge of the art works in the National Gallery. He knitted information about each work into a narrative arc. Women are underrepresented here, so we appreciated that he gave attention to works by women.
Jamie was amazing! Really enjoyed the tour, it was full of interesting facts, history and covered the most of famous arts
Amazing your! Becky was very knowledgeable, passionate and engaging. It was an amazing day, we learned a lot about art history and we even learned to appreciate different artists and styles that we didn’t before. We have done several art history tours in Europe and Australia and this was by far the best. Would definitely recommend.
Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, patient and friendly. We learned about the artworks, the history in which they were painted, and the history of the National gallery as well. It was an afternoon well spent.
We had a great guide in Steph. She was great in giving us so much information on the art and helped us understand the intricacies of the art we were viewing. I never knew there was so much to know when looking at a painting or sculpture. She was so passionate about the information that was provided and especially for women's artists and Van Gogh. She was also helpful when it came to selecting a restaurant to have dinner. She led us well out of her way to a fish and chips place. She didn't need to do it, but cared enough to give a top notch experience. If we had the chance to do it again, we would want Steph to be our guide.
The guide was excellent in texting us to locate her. Matilda was also excited about her subjects. She was very knowledgeable about the national Gallery. She zeroed in on what was important to us and added much to our knowledge and appreciation of art.
We enjoyed this tour and our guide Laurence was quite knowledgeable about a lot of the art. He was great at navigating us through the pieces of interest!
Jeremy is the best tour guide I’ve ever experienced. He’s clearly so passionate about art and I loved how much that showed during the tour. He was engaging and funny.
The tour guide was knowledgeable and had wonderful insights to share about the art pieces. It was a highly informative and engaging Tour. We thoroughly enjoyed it!
I had Matilda as my tour guide and she was so friendly and personable, we started chatting straight away while waiting for the rest of our group. The small group size meant the tour was really personal and Matilda took the time to answer all of our questions and ask our opinions. Matilda told use the guides write their own tours and her selection of paintings was a fantastic introduction to the museum and art history. We decided as a group we wanted a beginner level tour but Matilda is so knowledgeable that any level of knowledge would find her tour interesting. The best part was her use of storytelling and humour to humanise the artists and give historical context to the art. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is new to art or daunted by the volume of exhibits. It was so much more interesting than reading signs or listening to a pre-recorded audio guide. I would advise getting to the tour extra early because the size of the museum and multiple entrances made finding her a little tricky.
The National Gallery is an amazing place with a lot of art from various times and by famous painters. Stephanie (Steph) was our guide and she transformed the visit into a wonderful artistic journey throughout time. She talked in depth about style, techniques, symbolism, themes and artistic movements for each painting which had been carefully chosen. She also encouraged us to voice our own thoughts about what we were seeing in the paintings and bring our own analysis. Her passion, knowledge and excitement made the tour simply magical - an enlightening experience. We couldn't imagine this tour without her. Definitely book this tour! It was truly an eye-opener!
Lawrence of Babylon Tours took us on a wonderful 2 1/2 hour tour of the gallery. With over 2400 works of art and only two working feet, roaming the gallery would have been daunting and exhausting. Lawrence boiled the collection down to about 30 outstanding pieces for which he supplied illuminating context and interpretation. I know a thing or two, but Lawrence taught me plenty I didn’t. He was very knowledgeable about the gallery as a whole, locating the Caravaggios and a few other personal favorites that weren’t on the tour. A highly enjoyable afternoon!
Steph is the best! What could be better than touring the National Gallery with an Art History major?! Plus, she is engaging, friendly, and tells wonderful stories. She very skillfully selected a variety of things to show us, telling an interesting and memorable story and helping us to learn and take something away from each picture we saw together. She held the interest of adults and small children, what a wonderful, kind person! Highly recommend Steph and this tour!
The museum itself is amazingly beautiful and worth seeing. However, our tour guide Stephanie K made it especially memorable with her enthusiasm and passion for the art world. Her knowledge guided us to a better understanding and appreciation for the art, we were experiencing it and not simply viewing it.
I took this semi-private tour with Eleisha R. from Babylon Tours on 5/16/2025. Because the National Gallery is quite large and busy, the guided tour enabled us to focus on important works and learn more about them. Eleisha was very knowledgeable and encouraged conversation and questions. She taught us about the styles and techniques used across the represented eras. The group was limited to a small number. The Sainsbury wing had only recently opened. The Gallery has a broad collection of works, and the building is magnificent, sitting at the top of Trafalgar Square. I found the value for a 2.5 hour tour to be very high and highly recommend this small group tour.
National gallery is big but Jamie our guide did a good job choosing some master pieces. He explaned very well making the tour more interesting.
Very informative and well organized. Jamie was very knowledgeable. He kept everyone together and covered a significant number of paintings following a theme of paintings evolution.
