This private tour with our guide Siobhan Clarke was spectacular. Siobhan was not only saturated with Tudor history, but she was also warm, personable and attentive to our individual interests. This was one of the best tours we have ever had in the UK or anywhere else.

Flamboyant Henry VIII is most associated with this majestic palace, which he extended and developed after acquiring it in the 1520s. The palace's many royal occupants have ensured the palace has fabulous furnishings, tapestries and paintings. It is set in beautiful formal gardens, which include the famous maze and the Great Vine. Hampton Court has a designated Family Room, where parents and young children are invited to take a rest from the bustle of the palace. The play equipment is suitable for children aged under five. Family Trails guiding children around the palace are available at the Information Center. The palace is pushchair friendly and a lift is available if you'd like to access the upper floor without using the stairs. Hampton Court is just half an hour from Central London by direct train and is a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon out of the city! At least three hours is recommended for your visit to Hampton Court. Do you want to visit more Royal sites? Upgrade to the Royal Palaces Pass, including the Tower of London, Hampton Court and Kensington Palace. Your pass comprehends one visit to each attraction and is valid for two years. You'll have plenty of time to explore the stories and intrigues at each site at your leisure, as part of you own itinerary. -------------------- ITINERARY -------------------- Things to See and Do Palace Gardens:There are over 60 acres of gardens to explore at Hampton Court including the Maze, the Great Vine and the recently restored Privy Garden. Pretty average. Grounds and house were good to see. But! Parking abysmal, and if you’re disabled, it’s a half mile walk with little organisation. And the food costs! No way. In the cafe it was £8 just for a sausage roll, and £3.50 for a can of drink. And the Halloween entertainment was almost zero. Not worth the visit. Stay with Warwick or Windsor if you want a castle experience
Such an incredible place with sooo much history much history. Definitely worth the money n
The palace itself is excellent, however, parking cars at the location is hardly non existent and pricey too!!
This was the first palace I have ever visited and it was amazing! The opulence of life at that time is amazing! The artistry of the tapestries is unbelievable! I was staying in Kingston and took the bus which dropped off right across the street from the main gate. It was very easy to navigate the bus system. Important note: There is a lot of walking on the site. The palace is set back far from the road and there many beautifully preserved staircases to climb. I am 70+ and asked the ticket agent for suggestions on "must sees" knowing my capabilities. She was a great help! The audio tour is excellent. It gives very specific turn by turn descriptions. Every staff member I encountered was very gracious and helpful. It was impossible for me to see everything in my 3 hour visit, but it was well worth my time. I highly recommend it for adults. As an American, I don't think it would be a wise choice for American children who have limited or no knowledge of Royal history.
We all love visiting this palace and doing the audio tours of the different apartments. The main reason that we visited this time was to go to the food festival which we have previously visited and had an amazing time. This visit definitely did not disappoint. I booked the tickets in advance online and it was easy just to go straight into the gardens to access the festival. all of the stalls were brilliant and the food was delicious. I was especially pleased that The Pimms teapot was at the event again. I was delighted to see that the lovely lady who makes the beautiful Brownies from short and sweet Bakery was also present. The music was also really good this year. it was busy, but not too busy. We had a great time, thank you.
Very good. Well worth a visit. Gardens a little worse for wear due to the like of rain. Staff on site very helpful. Bring your own lunch as options limited and expensive.
A must to go on. We were fortunate our tour included a private guide for this. The place was amazing as well as the guide (Daniel) It was a four hour tour including getting there and back and it was worth it. With a wheelchair we got to see a couple of things normally not seen. Guide added a lot of information we would not have known without him.
A highlight of our London vacation! The audio guide was very helpful and would recommend to really learn about each room and the Tudor history that took place in the palace. Bonus was learning about the Georgian history and see the room in the Baroque section of the palace. We ate at the cafe and enjoyed that too.
We were a group of 30 and we did the private tour with Sheila. She was a amazing, her energy and charisma made the the tour very memorable. She tailored the tour to us, based on our questions and interest. We would most definitely recommend going to the palace doing the tour!
A good day out in a well preserved palace and gardens. Maze is good and shouldn't be missed. Catering prices a little high. Audio guide useful.
Take A full day to experience all the palace and gardens. Although we had no children in our party, they had plenty to engage the youngsters
Haven't visited for decades, have a girlfriend over from USA, paid almost £30 each that DOESN'Teven include parking.Found the commentary gadgets hard to navigate, corny acting staff & Beano comic sponsored paraphernalia everywhere.Limited food was offered for sale at a higher than normal price.
Stunning palace and gardens, well maintained and looked after, we had lunch in the gardens then toured the palace and its history
My sister had this on her bucket list . So off we went. Stayed just across the road in the mitre hotel - not cheap but worth see ( see review) Friendly staff, well organised. Spent all day there !! The gardens were lovely, went on the horse trip around the grounds (£5 each ) The Rooms were fabulous- although in my opinion which is of course personal , it would have been nice to have some mock up clothes for the people who had lived there and maybe a suit of armour of Henry’s. But having said that we had a lovely time we got the free audio to listen to and it was a boon! Would recommend Hampton court to anyone and the gift shop is also lovely as were the staff.
Such a fun day! I hadn’t been there since I was a child and was so happy to share the experience with family visiting from another country. The audio tour was free with admission and very good—you can tailor it to be as detailed as you want because you get an overview of each stop and then the option to get more detailed (i think the people saying it took them 5-6 hours may have been doing all the details because it didn’t take us that long, more like 2-3 hours). Many other families had brought picnic lunches and were enjoying them on the lawn—we hadn’t thought to do that and were jealous! We did have a lovely lunch at a Colombian cafe nearby, Canela Cafe, where the food was good and the people were even better than the food—so so nice!!
Lots of history and lots to discover/learn. Everything is well maintained and the staff very friendly. Downside: the map is pretty useless and parking a big issue and expensive once you find a space.
Hampton Court is a great place to visit with lots of history.. we visited on a relatively ‘quiet’ day ( no queues apart from for refreshments) and the rooms weren’t too crowded. We used the audio guide which I highly recommend however they need to improve the headsets as mine sometimes didn’t work at all or mostly worked only in one ear. This appeared to be due to the cable connector..As I have a hearing impairment I did struggle to hear it even with the volume on loud. There are plenty of resting places within the rooms which, when you can easily spend about 5 -6 hours looking round , are really needed.. I do recommend this place but be aware of the drawbacks; Food and drink is incredibly costly and the cafes /kiosks very busy so you’re better off taking your own and sitting in the grounds/gardens. Parking is in addition to ticket cost ( ours was £9 for 5 hours) which on top of £29 a ticket can make it an expensive day out but you pay on leaving so at least you don’t have the stress of worrying your ticket will run out.. and there is no set or clear route to see everything so make sure you get a free map and see the bits you want to see in no particular order… it would have also bern nice if it was clearer which bits were the original Tudor building and which was Georgian etc.. Lastly, my only criticism is the Beano themed stuff.. I appreciate it’s the holidays and it’s for the kids but it did spoil the historic atmosphere of some displays.. ( the Pewter room for example) .. I just wish it could have been a separate element rather than placed in with the heritage bits..
Such a lovely day. We took the train (past Wimbledon on the tournament final!) to the Palace and lucky us, it was joust day, so full of families and kids but also full of fun. The joust and falcons were fun. The grounds are great, lots of available shade and so many baby swans and ducks in July! The palace is cool, not as ornate as others but still a great sense of what life would have been like. We spent 5 hours here before taking a river cruise down to Richmond.
We had a great time - parking was easy on site and everywhere was within a short walking distance. The exhibits were superb and we saw the Indoor Tennis Court being used! Despite the hot weather and the fact that a lot of the garden was parched, we still saw some wonderful floral specimens. Food was great too - we spent around four and a half hours exploring and had a great day!
As a history lover, it was an enjoyable way to spend the day. The audioguides had the perfect amount of information with the ability to delve deeper in to things like architecture, but short enough to not be stuck in one section for too long. The tour felt interactive, particularly during the Tudor era, so perfect for children. There was plenty of helpful staff around to help us understand where to begin first, but it would have been better if there were recommended routes on the maps and better signage. Additionally, there were only 2 café’s which were both extortionately priced.
We booked our entry tickets through TripAdvisor but made our own way to the palace—and this is definitely the way to do it! Take the direct train from London Waterloo on the Hampton Court line (departing every 30 minutes), then enjoy an easy 5-minute walk from the station to the palace. Our ticket included an audio guide, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Hampton Court Palace beautifully showcases two distinct architectural styles: the original Tudor palace built for Cardinal Wolsey and Henry VIII, alongside the magnificent Baroque palace commissioned by William III and Mary II. It really gives you a wonderful sense of how the palace evolved over different periods of English history. It was a hot day, but there were plenty of shaded areas and benches to stop and rest. We spent about four hours exploring the palace and gardens, and it made for a truly lovely day.
Hampton Court Palace was one of the highlights of our trip. We were able to buy our tickets and get in right away, which made the visit easy and stress-free. The palace itself is absolutely worth seeing. Every room is beautifully preserved, full of history, and stunning to walk through. One of the things I appreciated most was the free guided walking tour with headphones that’s included with admission. It was informative and easy to follow, so in my opinion, there’s really no need to pay extra for a separate guided tour. What amazed me the most was learning that Hampton Court Palace is still actively used today. Standing in a place with so much history while knowing it continues to serve a purpose made the experience even more special. If you’re visiting London, I would definitely recommend adding Hampton Court Palace to your itinerary. It’s a beautiful mix of history, architecture, and royal heritage that’s well worth your time.
We had a great visit with our teenager. Beautiful palace and grounds. So much history. Loved the Beano twist, the costumed characters were brilliant, so entertaining! Ran out of time to do the maze so we'll be back! We are members and our daughter got in free with a Blue Peter badge. The membership is great value if you're likely to visit more than once, or visit multiple sites.
Great day out looking around this huge home of Henry VIII. Audio guide was a great addition to if you’re someone like me who enjoys learning about what they’re looking at. Gardens were beautiful especially the pond garden. Shame you can’t walk round this part as it’s quite difficult to see through the foliage surrounding the gate, but I understand why. Took a good 5 hours to get round and we didn’t do the maze so really is a full day. Worth a visit just for the history alone, great day out.
Beautiful place, Beautiful history
If you are interested in history this place is fabulous. I have seen reviews saying allow 2-3 hrs, however we did 6hrs and still didn't finish it all. I can only assume they didn't get the FREE audio guide. My only tip is park in Bushy Park, its free and take a packed lunch because its very expensive for food and drink
We did this as part of a group and it was really good. Good history here and the palace is unbelievable in size and grandeur.
Audio guide is free and fantastic to follow thru the castle . It’s a must to have the best experience . Recommend to start at 10 and by 2 pm you will have time to walk a tiss the street to the swan restaurant and back by ; pm for the jousting experience
Worth it to visit if you want to know all the details of the extravagant life of Henry the 8th - including the royal tapestries, paintings, gardens, the huge kitchens,
Great for all ages. Interactive with real scents and sounds. Walking in court yards a little rough as what would be expected in the century of interpretation. Not a problem if your careful. We felt like we had stepped back in time.
An incredible combination of times and building through time. The sheer number of rooms and rules around which to use for what are fascinating. Some exhibits looked a little tired, but there is so much for all ages. Had to change date for ticket which was very easy over the telephone with a small admin charge. Food and drink a little expensive, but considering where you are it’s to be expected.
Great historic house. 4 separate indoor apartments areas to view, which are all worth a visit. Extensive formal gardens which we didn’t have time to view, but looked great from the windows.
What a wonderful site to visit. Well worth the trip outside of London proper. Never enough time for me- allow 3+ hours in order to tour the palace and the grounds.
Hampton Court Palace and particularly the gardens is a stunning place to visit. So much history related to Henry VIII and William III. We visited during the heatwave but there were plenty of places to keep cool. It can be busy with school trips but this didn’t bother us and the age group of the children meant they were well behaved and seemed genuinely interested. All the staff we spoke with were very knowledgeable and keen to help. As mentioned by others the cafe can be a bit pricey but from my experience all places like this are very similar. You are permitted to bring your own food and drink in. Large car park and free for blue badge holders. We thoroughly enjoyed our day here.
It was really cool! And in the Haunted Gallery. Someone flicked my ear when nobody was with me. Could have been the ghost of Catherine Howard! But anyways. Hampton Court was really fun! Next time when I go, Pls the manager of hampton court reply to this comment, That is it okay if one of ur colleagues could tell me all your ghost stories you've experienced before as a colleague in hampton court? Thank you so much! And I saw a ghost near the inside of the wine wheel room!
If you love history this is a must see. It was quite an experience to wander in the halls of the Tudors, to see how they lived and passed their time. It was an absolute delight to have a chat with the older gentleman that was in the great hall. He kindly offered to take our picture in ye old monarchs seats and was very informative about the Tudor times. Overall a wonderful experience.
The palace and gardens were spectacular, incredibly interesting and did not disappoint. It must be said that the staff present were phenomenal and supportive when my mother-in-law experienced a sudden health issue. So thoughtful and caring. Our family is ever so grateful for their care and support. 🙏
Fantastic museum with so much to see and absorb. We paid extra for a guide and that was awesome, too. Will higly recommend to others.
An exceptional place to visit for a day out. We thought £29-£35 for a standard adult ticket was a bit pricey but having visited it didn't seem particularly expensive for what's on show. The buildings, gardens and maze were all excellent. The staff were numerous, informative and friendly. The architecture and artworks on display were phenomenal. Original works from Rembrandt, Hans Holbein the Younger, Canaletto, Van Dyck etc etc and every one a window on 500 year-old genius. Utterly superb. The restaurants were OK and the toilets were mostly OK (although there were plenty of them which helps). Overall a stunning place to visit and it reeks of history and import. Exceptional.
I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did , but it was truly magical and exceeded my expectations! It feels so accessible- unlike other palaces it never seemed that crowded even with all the school tours there - so you could take your time and pause, reflect and revisit things of interest. The baroque wing really felt like Versailles but without the crowds- truly beautiful. The gardens were also a wonderful surprise- so beautiful and well cared for. Lunch in the garden restaurant was a real treat as well, and the ladies in the shops were so lovely. Just a great visit all around - and a pleasant train trip from London. ( the station is so convenient to the palace!)
Having visited and enjoyed the splendour of the magnificent Versailles in Paris on several occasions, Hampton Court is certainly worth a visit but very much a poor cousin to the fabulous Versailles. Like most things in London, outrageously expensive to visit and probably not really worth the cost.
We had a wonderful time on our tour with our guide Sandy. She was very knowledgeable with a passion for Tudor History. The gardens are spectacular and we spent time enjoying the serenity of it all while watching Swans with their babies.
Great day, started walking around the gardens before it got too hot. Really enjoyed the tour around the palace , the audio guide is a must to get as much out of your visit. Not too busy and easy to find your way around. Well kept gardens and building.
It is an amazing place with so much history the gardens are beautiful worth exploring eat to get there using the tube
Was very disappointed in the lack of information signs around the whole palace, particularly in Henry VIII's rooms. Signage was very poor - I kept missing rooms and had to go round in circles to make sure I'd seen everything. Also the place was absolutely jam packed with kids on school tours - all looking utterly bored. Why bring them to a place they have no interest in? Cafe had nice cakes but extortionate prices. Hot food looked like it had been cooked a week ago.
Visited as part of our Palace and Castle weekend break in London. Firstly what struck me was the sheer size of the palace which just goes on forever. Grab your digital guide from the shop and grab a map. The tour is excellent, photography allowed inside and out, tickets purchased prior to our visit and they are open day not time limited so very relaxed. Limited parking on site and costs £1.80 per hour, further car parks a re a fair walk from the Palace. Tickets were £23 senior rate, up to six tickets can be purchased if on benefits for £1 each if available. Food and drinks available on site. Grounds are extensive and run down to the Thames.
Nicole and Lianne were really helpful and helped correct a mistake I made when booking x the palace itself is also gorgeous one of my top visited royal sites.
A Sumptuous Palace, Ice Skating Rink, Maze, and Royal Tennis Court! Hampton Court, the former residence of King Henry VIII has a lot to offer to visitors, especially families. We arrived here early, leaving our hotel at 7:45 to catch the train, so that we would slot into the first ticketed entrance time of the day. We are always keen to do this and beat the crowds. While awaiting our ticket entrance time, we enjoyed watching children ice skate on the outdoor rink (see photo of penguin "ice skating helpers") while I drank a hot chocolate purchased from the concessions shop. The palace itself offers a history lesson, with excellent signage, including information and portraits of all of King Henry VIII's wives. Walking through on our own probably took an hour. We lingered in the kitchens, dining room, and the king's meeting room with the round table. The signage in the meeting room taught us that the king's most trusted advisor sat to his right, so this writer has to assume that the expression "right hand man" must tie into this habit. In any event, we probably spent another hour enjoying the exterior of the palace. (See photos of the well-manicured trees, the Royal Tennis Court and the hedge maze). The hedge maze was such fun. We made it to the center and back to the exit with great speed, and I must admit that I felt very smug about this. We did some people-watching afterwards, or maybe people-listening is more accurate, being that we couldn't see them through the hedges, and we heard young people laughing and laughing, running into dead end after dead end, unable to find their way through for a good long while. After our morning at Hampton Court, we made our way over to the Globe Theater for a tour, then to theater for the evening. I am so glad we spent our morning at the very dignified Hampton Court Palace.
Hampton Court was a genuinely lovely visit , even if the ghosts clearly took the day off. Despite the rain trying its best to set the Tudor mood, it didn’t dampen my spirits (pun fully intended). The palace itself was atmospheric and beautifully kept, and the staff around the grounds were warm, friendly, and impressively knowledgeable. The only downside was the café staff, who came across a bit rude and abrupt, which took the shine off the experience for a moment. Thankfully, this was balanced out by a delightful chat with the lady in the gift shop, who absolutely deserves high praise for her kindness and enthusiasm. Overall, a memorable day out with plenty of charm , just missing a ghost cameo.
