Itinerary
We will collect you from your Central London hotel and drive you through London and out into the Oxfordshire countryside. Our first stops are in Oxfordshire. We visit the villages that became the village of Downton. Here we can have photographs outside Matthew Crawley’s house, the Hospital and the two village pubs. There are far too many other locations to list here, plus we don't wish to spoil all the surprises for you. Walk through the entrance to the hospital. Visit the church where all the weddings and funerals were filmed.. Walk by the post office. Plus a lot more....
We visit other villages in the Cotswolds area which are a secret to surprise you that have featured in the series. Leaving the villages behind us we start to head cross country to Highclere Castle. This journey takes around 50 minutes as Highclere is 40 miles away from our last Cotswold village. We will stop in the countryside for lunch (own expense) at an old English Pub. We arrive at Highclere Castle after lunch
Your guide will explain all there is to know about the Castle’s history, plus the Downton Locations you will see before you enter the rooms. This tour will not only show you the life of Lord and Lady Grantham but it will also treat you all like Lords and Ladies for the day. Please book Highclere Castle tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. We suggest that you book either 10.30am or 2.30pm. Highclere Castle is not open all year around, please check the Highclere Castle website. If the castle is not open on the day. We can offer an alternative which is visiting the Downton Villages and many more Cotswolds Villages.

Our driver / tour guide Greg was extremely knowledgeable of Downton Abbey and each of the actual filming locations. He was professional, personable and friendly. Although the torrential rains put a damper on the day, we felt Greg provided us with a great experience. We recommend Greg without reservation.
This was the trip of a life time. I have never been more pleased with the tour guide Andrew. He made the entire trip across the pond so very memorable. Thank you Andrew. Terri and I also appreciate your history knowledge. HighClere castle tour was super nice and very well organized. The add on tea was very-very nice and we were treated to a tasty selection, Mrs Patmore and Daisy would have certainly approved.
Our tour guide was Greg .. he was “ over the top great” … very knowledgeable and made the entire day and experience well worth it …He showed us everything he could about Downton Abbey ..had stories to tell us …was a great driver. I highly recommend going on this tour.!
We had a great day. Andrew was very knowledgeable and personable. He was very knowledgeable about Downton Abbey and and other areas of the UK that we had not previously seen.
This was a great way to get to Highclere Castle from London and see the villages where Downton was filmed. Even if you aren't a Downton fan (one of our group had never watched) you will enjoy the castle and historic villages. Our guide was well prepared and very knowledgeable about the host of the area. We always felt safe and would recommend this tour to our friends.
What an amazing and memorable day! Andrew was a fantastic tour guide! He even played the Downton theme song as we pulled into the property. He knew so much about the Cotwolds and took great pictures of us.
We were lucky enough to have Driver/Guide Steven for the entire day while visiting the Cotswolds and Castle. It was absolutely brilliant. He was a wealth of information and made the day truly special. We visited many of the sites that were used in the filming and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. A pub lunch with Steven was a must and was a highlight. He was a warm and cheerful guide. If you have a chance to have this driver you will be very lucky. Rain (it poured) or shine it was well worth the cost of this full day trip. Best tour we had during our week in London
Greg, our tour guide was very personable and knowledgeable. He also had media samples of the places we were visiting relating to Downton Abbey.
Loved it! Was a bucket list item and enjoyed every minute. Our guide was excellent! We had lunch at the tea room on the grounds and the food was great!
GREG IS AMAZING! My mom is a massive DA fan and Greg made sure she saw all the filming sights and we even lucked out and met a local woman whose home was used for filming…what a rare and special treat! My mom was in the hunt for a teacup for her collection and Greg made sure she had a chance to shop at a few antique places to find the perfect one! He was informative and kind and made our day so special!
Andrew was excellent! On time to our location, some special stop along the way and a wonderful day trip to see the Castle and Downton set locations. Highly recommend!
Andrew was a great guide knowledgeable of area we drove thru to get to Highclere. Had a wonderful day all the stops Tetris plus a great pub for lunch. I am a slow walker and he was accommodating of my abilities. Great tour highly recommend
To anyone who loved Downton Abbey, this was great. Loved the entire experience. Gregg does a wonderful job of presenting everything. The Cotswolds are so pretty and delightful.
Great day and great tour, very informative, beautiful countryside and castle with a rich history. Pay a little extra for the exhibition. Thanks Greg!
Friendly knowledgeable guide and driver. Took us to several beautiful Cotswold towns. Memorable trip.
Andrew was amazing! He became a fast family member !!!! Highly recommend A truly magical day. Special stops, a great lunch spot, quaint shops along the way. He is extremely knowledgeable
Greg was great. Very knowledgeable about the area. Answered all our questions. Yea at Highclere was great
Steve was a most excellent guide! He took great care to make my trip a special one. He was early for arrival, communicated with the hotel to let me know, and waited in the lobby. Then, he shared his 18 years of experience driving guests and entertained me thoroughly on the long drive to Highclere Castle! This customized tour included delightfully surprising additional stops as I was traveling alone on Easter Sunday, many of the usual spots were closed. Steve made sure to inform me of every great photo opportunity, and he was right about all of them! He took wonderful photos of me to make my mother smile, and was able to get me to each spot on the tour with the exact right timing to avoid crowds. Steve shared his love of history with me and it was clear he was a favorite among all the tour-stop partners as we were greeted warmly everywhere we went. Steve was a wonderful host, an efficient and safe driver, who really made my birthday a very special day indeed. Thanks, Mark! 😉
Greg the driver was amazing and we had a blast at Downton Abbey!! I would highly recommend this trip for any DA fans out there!
Excellent tour all day , exploring the castle and tailoring our day so as to see all the filming locations , I feel very satisfied that I came away not only seeing everything I wanted to see but also our Knowledgeable guide ( Greg who is flipping amazing !!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍) Made sure he got us to all of the fillm locations) Note buy your ticket first the ensure entry then book this private guided tour. It’s pricy but worth it 👍
The tour was great. Andrew did an exceptional job. He was very informed and very attentive to our needs. It was especially nice that he had video clips from the series of the sites we visited so you could easily see the before and after of each site.
Greg was a great guide who showed us much more than we expected. Combined with the guided tour & lunch at Highclere Castle and the tour of the villages it was a great experience, one we will remember forever.
This was a wonderful experience, whether you are a fan of the Downton Abbey program or not. I can’t say enough about our driver, Andrew. He was professional, knowledgeable and very engaging. Downton Abbey was an amazing experience and afterwards, the tea was a real treat on the premises. The extra time to the town of Bampton and Downton Abbey filming sites, as well as the ‘behind the scenes’ stories, enhanced the day.
The special attention our driver gave us!our dream adventure. Small tour group was nice. Our picnic tea was special.
Great day in the English Countryside! The Tour surpassed expectations! Our driver, Steve, made the day with lots of local knowledge, insight and a dream sense of humor! We also visited the Cotswolds and the home of William Penn. Highly recommended!
Very knowledgeable and friendly driver / giuide. He made the trip a pleasure. He made sure that we saw many highlights of the English countryside as well.
My wife became I’ll and I had to cancel our ticket. But so disappointed, but when I reported to you the day before, you graciously returned out full price . We sincerely appreciate that. My wife was heartbroken it you were very understanding. Thank you.
We had an amazing time touring the countryside including all of the Downton Abbey hotspots. Half of us had never seen the show and they loved it as much as the rest of us. David was a great driver. He had so much great knowledge and made our day driving around exceptional. It was just a perfect day. Can’t wait to come back when we can spend more time in the country!
We had a great experience seeing Highclere and Cotswold. Dave was an amazing guide for the day. Great historian. Very memorable day that we would highly recommend.
We had a great time. The cogs well villages are special. Greg our driver/ guide was excellent. If you book request Greg.
Our tour was great. Richard helped us plan it and Steve, our driver, was very helpful and accommodating. We could not have asked for a better tour experience.
I want to start off with the positives. Our guide, Andrew, was at our hotel right on time and he was wonderful!! He was funny and very knowledgeable about Downton. Considering we were with him over 8 hrs, he made the long drive enjoyable. Visiting the little town where Downton was filmed was very nice, but very small. The church was lovely. The negative surprise came when I said I’m ready to go to Highclere Castle and was told it would be at least a 90 min drive from the village. Wow!! My husband & I were shocked because it took a long time to get to the church and then we had to be in the car another 90 mins just to see the castle. Then the long drive back to London after spending less than 2 hrs at the Castle and castle grounds. I’m so grateful for Andrew. He was very interesting to talk to. I think the Downton Tour as advertised is very misleading. It says nothing about the distance between the castle and the town. We didn’t realize that most of our trip would be spent in the taxi. It was a very expensive trip and I felt like the company wasn’t completely honest with how much time you would be in the taxi. I’m glad I did it, but not sure I would recommend it without explaining what you would actually be doing all day.
We had a lovely day visiting the Downton Abbey film locations it was wonderful despite being very busy as it was fathers day. would highly recommed to Downton Abbey fans
Andrew was obviously a Downton Abbey fan and shared a lot of trivia. He was also exceedingly knowledgeable about the actual history of the filming spots that we stopped to see. He was very accommodating and helpful when one of our passengers got car sick. Just can’t say enough positive things about this tour. We were promised a good tour guide and Andrew did not disappoint! We loved making this trip in the black cab. It truly was a fabulous, VIP experience!
Richard was a wonderful guide! He generously shared his vast knowledge of the filming locations as well as his extensive knowledge of the English countryside and London locations If we return to London we will book tours and request Richard. Thank you
We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Andrew. We highly recommend this tour. We had an entire day at Highclere but having this additional day touring other sites that were used in the filming really was the highlight of our trip to England. Thanks you for making our 50th anniversary trip so special!
My black cab Downton Abbey tour was amazing. Andrew was so knowledgeable and took such care to make sure I had a memorable experience. From pick up to drop-off, we were chatting Downton, London, and everything in between. I felt like I was sightseeing with an old friend, not someone I just met. He knew so many details and made the day absolutely grand. If I'm given the chance to come back to London, capital taxi tours will be the top of my list!!!
We had a wonderful time, from the initial guidance on how to gain access to the castle, to where to get great snacks, our guide, Andrew, was informative, professional, kind, and fun!

This was a wonderful experience! Our guide, Andrew, was absolutely incredible. He was so knowledgeable about the area, had great anecdotes about each location, and even suggested a delicious restaurant for lunch. Also, he was five minutes early picking us up at Waterloo Station. He truly made this a magnificent experience.

Wonderful tour. Wonderful and knowledgeable guide, very comfortable and leisure tour. Expensive, but worth every penny spent. The visit to Blemheim Palace was a highlight.

Oh my goodness - Truly the highlight of our trip!! I cannot say enough about this tour. Steve was very prompt, courteous, friendly and knowledgeable. I knew we were going to Bampton and Highclere but along the way he also brought us to the spot used to film when Anna goes to find Bates at The Red Lion pub. We drove right through that ford of water that her bus goes through in that scene. He also took us to another interesting old church and pointed out the graves of 3 sisters he thinks the Crawley girls may have been modeled after.
We enjoyed Bampton Village VERY much. So very neat to walk around the square and visit the site used for the hospital, which is now a lovely little souvenir shop run by volunteers. Going inside the church was an extra special treat. Just walking along the walkway with all of the old headstones - it really is like you are walking around Downton Village, it is all so familiar. Now watching the show is even more enjoyable with these real images fresh in my mind. I notice things in the show now that I saw in real life and it gives it an added thrill. There was no shortage of photo ops and Steve made sure we got plenty.
Highclere Castle is just amazing!! The furniture and portraits are just what you know and love from the show. And yes, there are blank shields on the mantle piece. No one really knows exactly why but surmise they were for future marriages. There are many interesting personal and historical photos on display of the real Carnarvon family. It was the expedition of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon that discovered King Tut's tomb and there is a very interesting Egyptian exhibit downstairs. It was the Christmas opening when we were there so there were carolers in the great hall which added to the experience.
If you love Downton Abbey this is a Must-Do tour. SO much more personal and enjoyable than a group bus tour. We truly enjoyed our interaction with our driver/guide Steve. He made sure to take plenty of pictures of us to commemorate our trip and went out of his way to find us a pub to eat on the way home. He was fun and engaging and full of interesting facts and trivia. He saw to our every need and was a perfect gentleman in every way. Thank you so much, Steve, for a truly marvelous, memorable day. Happy Christmas to you and yours!
p.s. Also a shout-out to Capital Taxi Tours for handling the whole booking so efficiently. They even offered assistance in getting tickets to Highclere which I thought was truly going above and beyond. Thank you Allyson!

Steve Cahill, our personal driver and tour guide, was wonderful. He was extremely accommodating, flexible, knowledgeable and helpful. We loved every minute of our day.
Thank you, Steve.

My family and I had a wonderful time with our guide Andrew, who showed us many of the filming locations in Downton Abbey, such as Mr. Drew's Farm, the Downton Village, and more. He was very knowledgeable about the show and even threw in a bunch of Harry Potter trivia, which I loved!. Since it was a private tour, we felt very special to have a cab and guide all to ourselves and did not feel rushed at all. Sadly, Highclere Castle was closed at the time of our visit, but we did get to visit Blenheim Palace, which was equally grand and beautiful!

We really enjoyed stopping in at the farm and the village and other sites of filming. The castle was amazing. We would liked to have had more time walking on the grounds. It was wonderful having our private tour guide with Black Cab. Viator helped us get the tour by rearranging another tour as I didn't realize Highclere is closed on Fridays.

What a wonderful day! Andrew was a terrific tour guide. Although Highclere Castle was not open, we were able to visit Bampton Village, Coggs Farm and other locations used in filming Downton Abbey. We had lunch at the Highway Inn in Burford. It did not disappoint! Would love to go back and stay next time. We then toured various town in Cotswolds and learned more about the history of the area. What beautiful country. Would highly recommend this tour.

I wish I could rate this tour as a 6! Our tour guide, Steve, was fabulous and made the tour that much better!

One item missing (not Steve's fault!) was the bottle of wine which was part of our VIP package. Please look into this and provide to Steve of Capital Taxis. He deserves it!

What a fabulous and interesting day. Andrew was the best guide we could ask for. He catered trip to suit our interests and went above and beyond to cater for my elderly mother. As Downton Abbey was not open at this time, we visited many of the other filming spots and Cottswolds, all with a very informative history of all places we visited. We also visited Blenheim Palace, birth place of Winston Churchill and had the most amazing time, such history. Thank you Andrew.
