Itinerary
Your day starts with pickup in central Ljubljana. On the roughly 1-hour drive, your guide introduces the Karst, the limestone region that gave its name to karst landscapes worldwide, and the cave you are about to walk through. Then a 2-hour guided tour of the Škocjan Caves: an underground canyon carved by the Reka river, a footbridge set almost 50 metres above the water, halls large enough to hold a cathedral. UNESCO-listed, and far quieter than Slovenia's busier show caves.
On the way to the coast you stop at Socerb Castle, perched on the edge of the Karst plateau. From the castle the whole Gulf of Trieste opens below you, the Slovenian coast and Italy in a single view. A short stop, time for photos and the view.
Then Piran, five centuries of Venice in one compact old town: narrow lanes, Tartini Square, the little harbour. Your guide walks you through the historic centre, then the time is yours, a seafood lunch by the water, a coffee on the square, and in the summer months a swim in the Adriatic. Your guide knows which konoba is worth your hour. After the free time, a relaxed drive back to Ljubljana with a drop-off in the centre.

The UNESCO Skocjan Caves & Piran tour is essentially a drive and drop tour. The cave tour has reserved tickets (definitely required as several hours of tours were fully booked when we arrived), and taken by on-site guides. Piran was some 3 hours of a self-guided tour and lunch. The Skocjan Caves tour is spectacular - the underground canyons and river is awesome. The stalitites and stalagmites are good (but not as well lit as others I have seen). The cave tour group was too large (50 plus) for everyone to hear and see comfortably. Felt as though we were marching through rather than fully appreciating the beauty of the caves. A word of caution - the walk/steps are well set out, but still very strenuous. Piran is a beautiful seaside town, swimming excellent if the weather is right, and the cafe food (especially seafood) is magnificent. A great few hours beside the seaside. Overall a great day out
The tour of the caves is absolutely spectacular but also quite strenuous - it's a fair walk from the tickets office to the cave entrance then lots of steps and slopes within the cave system so it may not suit everyone..
Very nice tour, both the caves and the city of Piran. Our guide was very good, and we learnes a lot also about Slovenian history and life in general.
Andrej really know his stuffs and very pleasant to deal with. He’s very funny, We truly enjoy the trip’
Wonderful day. A great tour. Well worth doing. Amazing to be able to see ( teeny tiny, but there) Venice from Piran. As well as Trieste and Croatia. The caves weren’t cold ( in September ), so have layers to ensure comfortable if feel hot ( ie instead of cold; eg I didn’t need the warm layer brought with me). Bring a bar or snack to tide oneself over , as lunch in Piran is quite late.
Our guide Gordona, she is very informative and knowledgeable. She explained the history of Slovenia and told us all about the country.
Wonderful trip. Caves were amazing and Piran is a quaint seaside town well worth exploring. Our guide, Jacob, kept us well informed and made the trip even more enjoyable.
This was an outstanding day trip and one of the highlights of my visit to Slovenia. The Škocjan Caves were absolutely incredible. Seeing this UNESCO World Heritage Site in person is an experience that photos simply can't capture. The immense underground chambers and natural formations were breathtaking, and the guided tour was both informative and well organized. After the caves, we visited Piran, a beautiful coastal town with charming streets, stunning Adriatic views, and a relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect contrast to the caves and gave us time to explore, enjoy the scenery, and experience another side of Slovenia. The entire day was well paced, professionally organized, and offered a wonderful mix of natural beauty, history, and culture. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Slovenia.
This was a last minute tour because two different vendors both had canceled my coveted tours. However, this made up for the dissapoint of the promised tours. Went to the Ŝkocjan Caves, and Piran. I felt went into two different environments one was mountainous and other Mediterranean. My guide Tomaź was great. He answered all my questions, was always prompt, and warmly personable with the travelers.
A lot of driving on the road and ticket is not included in the price but this is a small group compared to other tour group.
The guide Thomas was extremely knowledgeable, interesting and accommodating. Varied experiences. The caves were awe-inspiring with a pleasant walk to get to them and a walk up to a viewpoint with Thomas afterwards. Seeing the river flowing through the cavern was marvellous as were the columns formed over thousands of years. Made me think of 'Alien'. We drove to the home of the Lippanzaners. Seeing literally (I mean it) hundreds of the white horses fulfilled a childhood dream. I was impressed that we could drive past their fields and take photos without hindrance. Then a drive to Piran, a picturesque place with a nice seafood restaurant recommended by our guide. A worthwhile experience.
What a day out! Our guide Nina did a brilliant job on that day, her pace was gentle and clean, her commentary is well constructed and relevant and also pleasing to the ears, she is one of the best guide I had in Slovenia, very clear instruction throughout the day. The day is well out together, with the beautiful magnificent cave to start the day then relaxing in Piran, a great day out.
Went to both Postojna and Skocjan Caves, both should be visited, each has something unique and breathtaking. There are around 500 steps to go up in Skocjan Caves, worth it, but something to consider when deciding your itinerary. Piran is a lovely little town, unfortunately for us it rained the whole day, but we had a fabulous meal and dessert, so enjoyed the experience regardless of the weather.
Great guide and amazing views/scenery.
The cave is outstanding but it’s 3 kilometers and 500 steps, plus a lot of sloping up and down walkways. My watch said I climbed 59 stories. Piran is an attractive coastal town - only 4000 residents. Not too crowded for his time of year. The guide was great. Shares much knowledge of Slovenia and the sites we saw. Highly recommend!
George was a wonderful guide, very knowledgeable and friendly. The weather was perfect and views amazing.
The caves are amazing... well worth the trip and the cost. Out guide - Jure - couldn't have been more accommodating. He gave us lots of info about the locations and Slovenia and made the trip brilliant. When we got to Piran it was raining very hard so we all agreed to cut that part a little short, which was a shame but, given the conditions, it was good to have some flexibility.
This tour was wonderful. The caves were great but it should be noted it is an active tour level 3. A long walk to begin, once in the caves another 1.5 hours of walking and many, many stairs. That said very interesting. Our time in Piran was amazing. What a perfect little Adriatic seaside village.
Our host was a superb guide on our visit to the caves and Piran. She is an accomplished professional with deep knowledge of the history and culture of Ljubljana and Piran and possesses excellent communication skills. She constantly checked to ensure that her clients were comfortable, could hear her and knew that they could ask questions whenever they wanted. She also shared some aspects of her own life that showed us what it is like to live in Slovenia today. Brava! Thank you!
Our guide, Jan, was excellent. He had a very good command of English and made sure to convey a lot of Slovenian history and geography to us. The caves themselves were an awesome site. You felt like you were in another world. The tour, however, needs to be clearer on the degree of exertion. As an older person this was not easy. There were a lot of inclines up and down and a lot of stairs. Anybody with medical conditions or heart conditions definitely need to avoid this.
Nina was an excellent guide for this trip. Explaining all the history and so nice to be with. The cave was awesome with a river running through it. Piran in the afternoon was lovely to hang out in, climb the church tower and see the Adriatic sea and eat at the Pavel restaurant.
The caves are wonderful, such a beautiful experience. Our guide was so lovely and warm, made the experience much nicer. Piran is lovely and it's a nice amount of time to wander for shopping or a swim.
Andrei was an absolutely amazing knowledgeable patient and fun guide! Every stop was perfectly timed and was an absolutely perfect way to experience piran, the caves and wonderful Slovenian hospitality!
This really is a more cost-effective way to visit some sites rather than renting a car or getting a taxi. The tour guide will give you commentary as you drive, but does not get off at the places to tell you more. I’m glad I went on the tour, but thought maybe there would be more interaction at some of the sites. Not the tour guides fault, just the way it’s organized. The tour guide did an OK job, was not personable, but kept to the facts.
We had a fantastic day out and thought this was an excellent mixture of activities for the day. The caves were amazing and felt less hectic and touristy than the Postojna caves (which we also enjoyed on a different day). We liked the option to walk back from the cave exit and see some more of the nature around there. We loved the views from Piran wall (and would recommend not skipping them out). Piran was nice and we enjoyed a dip in the sea to cool down on a very hot day. Our guide was friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. We learned a lot about the area and would definitely recommend this trip.
The Skocjan Caves were an absolute must-see. My only regret is there wasn't enough time to see the longer route out of the caves - something I will have to do on a return visit. Piran was beautiful and I highly recommend taking your swimming costume and having a swim in the sea - a lovely way to cool down. I went on 2 tours with Slovenian Explorer and their buses are very comfortable and the drivers wear microphones so that you can hear them guide. This wasn't the case in other tour operator's buses, so I really recommend finding tours by Slovenian Explorer. Thank you to guide of the day George!
A brilliant day out. The caves are something else. I could spend hours in them. The coast town is good as well. You’re given plenty of time to explore it. Guide was good and kept us all on time.
We had a wonderful tour of the Cave and a relaxing stop for lunch and sightseeing in Piran. Our tour guide was fun, knowledge and made the day relaxing.
Our guide Thomas was friendly and informative. He was very accommodating and flexible. The caves were phenomenal and Piran was picturesque.
This cave experience is amazing. It’s a can’t miss experience that we will always remember because it is unlike anything we’ve done before. Our guide was excellent, knowledgeable, experienced, great pace, fun to be with and the caves…I can only describe them as awe inspiring. We wore light weight pants (though my husband said he could have worn shorts) and tee shirts with light rain jackets. Enjoy!
This is a great experiences, seeing the underground great canyon and river. Luckily weather was wonderful'
Excellent guide knowledgeable flexible & friendly. Caves & Piran great. Wish funicular was working at the cave
Good activity, caves and canyon very impressive, Piran also despite the weather! Nicely paced day with friendly tour guide
After seeing prices for private transfers to the caves, the Slovenia Explorer tour was just perfect for weary travellers. Nina, the driver and guide was excellent. She provided detailed local knowledge and historical contexts. Nina ensured we were able to purchase our tickets to the caves (cave entry not included in tour price) and showed us the best places to take photos before entering the caves. Photos are not permitted to be taken inside the caves. Use your time in the caves to soak up their grandure. They are spectacular. The cave guide we had provided commentary in English and she was fabulous too. The Slovenia Explorer tour then took us to a few scenic vantage points and finished with a few hours to explore the seaside town of Piran, where you can purchase lunch. Nina the tour guide, took good care of us and was a very safe driver. She is an asset to the company. Highly recommend this tour if you want to see the caves, have a bit of a look around outside of the city...especially if you are an exhausted traveller.
Wowwww Wat an Excellent trip to Skocjan Caves & Piran... The guided your inside the caves were so refreshing & Amazing., Especially starting with the Silent Cave & moving towards the natural noise with the river Reka 👌👌👌 Our tour Guide Emil - What to say about him!!! Such an outstanding Professional....So friendly ,helpful & So informative especially about the Slovenian History & Geographical features. He's So eloquent in communication. He has nice suggestions for Local restaurants as well!!! He also explained the process to become a Tourist Guide ,with 6 exams & a practical exam - Excellent from Slovenia 👏👏👏 A smaller group on the day helped as well, which enabled Emil to give insightful information. Also covered the Socerb Village including the Sveta Jama aka The Holy Cave... And finally finishing the tour in the Adriatic Coast in the small town of Piran which was very scenic too!! This tour with the Guide Emil - Definitely Worthy & not to miss out...
My tour guide, Mr. Emil is a very considerate and kind gentleman. He taught me so many things related to history of Slovenia, geography and culture during the road trip. Appreciated very much!! Talking about the trip, the Skocjan cave was so stunning. I was like being in a magical underworld that I had never seen places like this before. I enjoyed the tranquility and the echo of each droplet fell from the ceiling as well. We also visited Piran. It is a small town but the food there was so good. Climbing up to the Piran Wall, you will see the beautiful view of the whole peninsula.
It was an amazing day trip to the caves and the Adriatic see. Our guide Emil very nice, well organised and useful, we had a perfect day thanks to him
This was such a great tour, and a big reason for that was the guide, Emil. From the moment he picked us up, he went above and beyond to make sure we got the absolute most out of our tour. He was very knowledgeable about Slovenian history as well. Visiting the Skocjan cave was a very cool experience. And I was over the moon for the chance to make it to the Istrian coastal city of Piran. Emil sent us to a great restaurant once we arrived and gave us a good orientation and plenty of time to discover the town. I highly recommend this tour.
George was a wonderful tour guide. The caves are astounding. Though a bit challenging of a walk, my 91-year old mother was able to make it. Piran is a lovely town. We enjoyed the tour very much.
Fantastic day out - totally recommend it! The caves are well worth a visit as the experience is almost other worldly. However, be prepared for quite a walk - both uphill and downhill. The cave guides are excellent and they stay with you throughout the trek. Also make sure you wear shoes with grippy soles as it IS wet and damp in the caves. Piran is absolutely beautiful. We had a spot of good weather when we were there so it was even better. Lots of places to eat seafood and ice creams; you can sit and enjoy a coffee or a beer right by the sea. You can even take a swim at this time of the year - was told the water is just the right temperature!
Great day out. The caves were amazing especially the river running through them. Although there were three parties going through the caves at the same time, it felt peaceful. Our tour guide for the day was full of interesting facts about Slovenia, and also was keen to go by the back roads so that we saw more of the culture.
Our driver, Tomasz was terrific. The tour was relaxed and Skocjan cave was huge. The river running through it was incredible. We had beautiful views in Piran and enjoyed the time to walk around and see the sites.
Škocjan caves is not the usual cave experience like the Postojna more common and mainstream stalagmites and stalactites caves. Škocjan is about deep narrow ravines with roar of rushing waters, about great heights between ravine rapids and ceiling of cave, about the cave ceiling looking like upside down snow forest or extraordinary scenery from another planet, about eerie darkness and evidence of the first explorer dangerous routes discovering the caves!
Our guide Gorazd was extremely knowledgeable about his stunning home country. The caves are amazing ensure that you wear non slip shoes as the floor can be a little slippery in places. Be prepared to walk up and down stairs there not steep and you can go at your own pace so it’s not that bad and the caves are worth it. At the end of the caves you catch a lift to the top and the last 47 steps to the lift are the worse. All said it’s a must whilst here. Piran is a quaint little fishing village with a beautiful harbour the walk along the sea front to the lighthouse is lovely with plenty of bars and restaurants along the way. There is a beautiful big square where again it’s full of restaurants where you can also get a beer. We went on a weekend and the traffic getting out of piran was terrible as you have tourist aswell as locals going for the day so if you get the choice go on a weekday.
Small group tour. Was really nice and comfortable. September crowds were not too bad. Had good weather so it was nice to see the castle.
Our guide/driver Isidor was great. Perfect group size, enough time in each location to not feel very rushed. Well planned tour.
Tomasco made this tour very interesting in his attentive manner narrating stories while driving our small group in the van to the caves and piran . I was anxious to go to Skocjan caves after having been to postojna caves several days before esp since they are a unesco site. I found the caves not to be nearly as interesting as the other cave with not as impressive stalagmites and staglatites. Pro… it has a river running underground but it is pretty far away to see all in the dark cave . We had a designated guide for about 35 people rather than just wandering in our own as the previous caves . Con.. tons of steps and the first exit was closed so even more steps. It was quite exhausting for this 60ish woman in good shape! Piran was a gem of a city . A Slovenian coastal town with a feel of Italy and close to Croatia so definitely a city of mixed identities! I would have like to spend more time than the allotted 2 hours in this little gem .
This day tour was amazing! Walking through the caves was a memorable experience, and the coastline at Piran was beautiful! Our tour guide was very efficient, friendly and informative - could not recommend this enough!
Driver was amazing. He was very knowledgeable yet not over bearing. Cave experience was breathtaking. Piran was like Amalfi with fewer crowds.
