Itinerary
The Castles are a reflection of an era, however the people in different periods accepted and perceived them quite differently, just like life is getting new forms all the time. Castles and manors have, with their extraordinary past and present, always teased human imagination. Various stories interwove about the castles, above all about their inhabitants, which were later changed by the people and have been told to their descendants to this day. And due to all those stories and legends about the castles and their inhabitants that were kept by the folk tradition, we can still (magically) relive the past of the mostly castle ruins, that still daringly and proudly stand on the clifs and remind us of their former glory. Thus a lot of stories and legends about the Old Castle Celje, The Lower Castle, the Counts and the Princes of Celje and people from Teharje, were told. The stories and legends edited by Janko Orožen: Castles and Manors according to folk tradition and the documentary film Veronika and Friderik.

A beautifully located castle with some excellent architectural ( modern) interpretations. Atmospheric & informative. Nice cafe.
A very beautiful day trip with your family, small kids or big it doesn't matter. Especially a great experience in the old print factory.
I have basically no knowledge of Slovenian history or the family that owned this castle and that probably reduces it's impact. But it's an amazing site, very well maintained, and if you're into castles worth a detour. My GPS struggled to find it and I had to wander around a bit. Basically, as you'd expect from a castle look for the top of the hill.
It’s a nice option after the hike but you can also go by car, of course. The castle is well maintained and organised. The staff at the reception is kind and attentive. Different places and rooms with great views from the town of Celje. Some information about the history of the village and a nice cafeteria for an espresso.
Beautiful old castle with a lot of history. It used to belong to a powerful house of Grofje Celjski and it shows. It is placed above old city center of Celje which offers scenic views of Celje and its sourroundings. A must visit if you are around!
Was visiting this castle with my Erasmus programme. We had a lovely visit and guide was very good at explaining and answering the questions. However, tour was shorter than I expected.
Visited the Castle on a gorgeous sunny day and it was just wonderful You get a great feeling of medieval times and the walk ways between some of the buildings make you feel like you are on the set of a Game of Thrones episode Fabulous views from the top of the tower and really good information about the castle Nice little cafe at the entrance which is nice at the end, especially if the the weather was hot, like on our visit Well worth the €15 for a family of 4 !
With accient history its place you must visit while u r in Celje. History is very important for Celje and its part of us, you will never forget this trip.
We stopped to visit Celje Castle on our journey from Maribor to Ljubljana, and it was worth the effort to take this detour. The exhibits in the castle were informative and we learned quite a bit of how important this castle was for this area in medieval times. There was also a torture exhibit in the dungeon of the tower which was also interesting.
An amazing castle with signs translated into virtually faultless English too. A very friendly welcome from the reception too. Would heartily recommend the castle to anyone visiting Slovenia. We are looking forward to going back perhaps to the medieval festival
Very cool castle and a nice view. Not too much at the top other than a few info boards. There is a lot more info in the regional museum. The hike up is very steep. Worth going to but you don’t need more than 1hr.
I think it’s a great place to visit if you’re in Celje so if you didn’t visit it yet and you’re anywhere near Celje i recommend you go visit Celje and it’s castle!
Really worth visiting, the ticked for 10 EUR included gallery in the city not far from parking and also old mansion in the city. The castle has amazing views and is well kept, restored in a very nice way. A must see in Celje.
We visited It during a rainy and foggy day that made It very suggestive. It's an Amazing Place and we would like to return here during the Summer to admire the Valley view.
We stopped by the castle enroute from Ljubljana to Graz. The rain abbreviated our visit and detracted from the views over the river and valley but was still worth the time. The torture chamber exhibits were chilling and a reminder of how cruel humans can be.
A real discovery. Fortress and ruins of the former castle of Celje. Mysterious and somewhat morbid life of nobles who lived in northern Croatia in addition to Slovenia. The Museum of Horror fits perfectly into the area. Nice piece of history.
Went here today on route to Maribor. Not expensive to get in. Despite the persitent rain, it was excellent value for money, and i suspect would be fabulous on a sunny day (nice enough on a rainy day). On top of a 400m hill and apparently was never stormed or attacked as the Counts of Celje were too well connected and maintained good relations. Stunning location. Well worth a visit. We drove, but you can see the train station from the castle (would be an excellent day out on a city break to Ljubjana) and there was a bus waiting outside the castle to take people back to Celje. Has a cafe inside
The parking lot is 20meters from entrance. Fridays was not crowded at all. Entrance fee fair. Parking free. Entrance included voucher f coffee shop. Coffee shop also friendly and fair priced. Restrooms superb clean. Good renovated walking paths. Serveral fun spots for kids. Modern museum shop even here no tourist rip off. This was a very relaxing visit, where the guest is treated as valued partner !
Its nice to walk around, it has a lot of history energy, love tower, beer :) nice wiev, sunset etc. :) if you are around its worth to see it!
Unlike the Ljubljana Castle, this one has not been completely modernized and still provides a glimpse into its past life. The introductory placards give a good overview of the history of both the building and the families who lived there. The view from the top of the tower is worth the total price of admission.
The castle is locate d on the hill overlooking Celje. It is possble to drive up there with a car, just keep in mind that the road are a little narrow, but most of the time not real busy It is also possible to hike up there from the village. The castle went through some changes over the years, but there is still plenty to see. You can still go in the main building and up the restored tower. The tower gives a nice view of the castle and the climb is wortwhile to take some shots. The viewing platform gives an overview of the village below. A family ticket cot 16 euro and is worth it. There is also a small reastaurant located in the castle.
Wonderful sunny day, excellent for taking beautiful pictures on the castle. Friendly staff and a lot to see.
A 12th Century origin for this striking structure that dominates the town. The various ages have added to the impressive structure..a must visit.
On this castle, everything is extremely well organised and the view from the tower is breathtakingly beautiful. A must-see!
Unfortunately, almost all the interior spaces are closed due to work so we were through the whole "castle" in 20 minutes, in addition the water was cut off and the toilets were therefore not available. The only plus I can think of is that for a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children we only spent €15, otherwise it really would have felt like a rip-off.
Beautiful castle with a great view, friendly staff. Due to renovation work at the castle, unfortunately, you could not see that much; there was only a small exhibition and it was not very exciting.
There is a parking lot in front of the entrance to the castle. It's a fortification at the top of the hill. It is a large medieval castle that used to control traffic in the region of the center of Celje. The foundation of this castle dates back to the 12th century. Open daily from 09 to 17hs. Price is EUR 7.00 per person (student pays EUR 4.00). There is a combined entry option between the castle and the regional museum of Celj for EUR 10.00 per person! The best option is to buy the combined ticket and after visiting the castle, take the car down to the historic center and spend the day there and visit the two large regional museums.
The Chateau de Célie is truly impressive! Its history and architecture travel back in time, while the view from the tower is breathtaking. Everything is well preserved and walking through its premises you can feel the atmosphere of the time. Ideal for a short trip.
We were delighted by the visit of this castle, I strongly recommend it. Very nice view, all around the castle on Celje and its surroundings.
Well preserved medieval castle. Very interesting visit and spectacular views from the viewpoint and the tower. You can see all of Celje and its surroundings. It is worth the visit and the 7 euros it costs to enter.
Beautifully preserved castle on top of a mountain. Very nice views. On some days there are activities in the castle, but this was not during our visit.
Wunderschöne Burg mit idealem Ausblick über die Stadt. Eintritt etwas teuer, 7 Euro für Erwachsene, 4 Euro ermäßigt..
Nice and beautiful castle with a cozy bar with small playground on. Beautiful view of the city. Not a super long visit, but for what you pay there definitely worth stopping.
I am surprised to read so many positive reviews. We only spent an hour on site (we can add the 20 minutes spent having a drink). They're almost just ruins. We were told at the entrance that there was an exhibition on instruments of torture. I expected to go through several rooms. In the end, there was only one! The tour was quick. The explanatory panels on the castle are limited. I would say that the main interest of this castle is the view of Celje and its surroundings. I read that there was entertainment on weekends. We went today Friday. It was "dead." I specify that there is parking right next to the entrance of the castle. There is also a path to climb on foot (shady path). A sign says it takes 25 minutes to get to the castle but we met a person who had borrowed it and told us it took well over half an hour! One last point: dogs are allowed, kept on a leash. There is a misleading sign at the entrance: a dog off a leash, crossed out with a cross. So we thought dogs were forbidden. Luckily, we saw a woman with a dog in the distance. As a result, we were asked the question and told that it was dogs not on a leash that were prohibited. In summary, I would recommend this castle only to people staying in the immediate vicinity. There is much more beautiful to see in Slovenia.
Small castle with great views of the old town and the hills. Very few people for this time of year. Very good price.
Castle reached after several steep curves by car, little parking but free, friendly ticket office, the girl speaks Italian, there are also brochures in Italian. Well maintained castle, although it is a bare of contents, balconies and stairs not accessible to people with motor disabilities. In the tower there is a miserable part dedicated to torture, there is an internal bar with normal prices. Spectacular views from all sides of the walls.
Interesting to visit, torture chamber and also the view from the big tower. Unfortunately no guided tour available. Lots of steps to climb, but the view makes up for it.
La visita al castello di Celje merita se vi si arriva attraverso il sentiero che si addentra nel bosco. La durata del giro è di circa un'ora, ma quello che veramente colpisce è il meraviglioso panorama che si gode da lì sopra
Very beautiful castle, well maintained with a satisfying view of Celje from above, inside there is a bar where you can eat with a discount of €1 from the price of the entrance ticket
The castle is in a wonderful position, dominates the town and has fascinating stories. Its structure is also fascinating. Internally there is a bar and events are often organised. In the main tower there is an interesting permanent exhibition on torture. The only flaw was the staff at the entrance who "ripped us off" by selling us more expensive tickets than they should have thought they were lying about the ages of our children. Ask for documents and avoid certain reprehensible scenes.
Reachable on foot or by car (rather steep uphill road). Perfect location, spectacular views - especially from the highest tower. Inside, in the rooms, however, there is little or nothing. There is also little information on the history of the castle; an introductory video would have been very welcome. However, the old Celje Castle remains worth visiting.
Beautiful Castle well preserved. It stands on a hill overlooking Celje, with a beautiful view of the surrounding valley.
Castle being arranged, but animated by very nice activities with little shows along the way staged by boys in medieval clothes small fights, camps games . glimpse of life of those tempi.in plus a torture room and a nice character that will make you relive as they printed in the Middle Ages
Not wheelchair accessible at all, also too style for electric trolleys Also keep in mind that certain parts are closed for parties and then are private.
After a good climb through the forest a very nice visit for 7€ per person. Dog allowed. Passing through the awesome printer. I recommend.
Castle well preserved and also used for various events. Interesting panoramic view from the walkways along the walls and the highest tower.
Celje Castle is in a "strategic" position, placed on a hill overlooking the town and the road to Lasko. Visitable at an affordable cost (6 euros including 2 "refaunds" to be discounted at the bar) consists of two towers , a central courtyard also used for evening events, and defense ramparts. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
I wouldn’t say that Celje Castle is a must-see in Slovenia. But if we don't go far, it would be a shame not to stop there. The castle has beautiful views as the region as well as the Alps. We can see a demonstration of the printing press and life at the time. The interior is little provided however. The price is rare affordable (6 euros including 1 euro of good consumption). We liked it.
Beautiful views of the city of Celje, the Savinja river and the Alps that close the frame from the west. A mighty fortification; by area it is the largest medieval castle in Slovenia. You can also visit independently; along the walk to the castle there are panels that allow you to explore it and learn about its history and legend. Today the restored castle hosts exhibitions, weddings, events such as concerts and historical outdoor performances culminating in the two-day medieval festival at the end of August.
