I've been a birder in Africa for many years with the Lilac Breasted Roller (see left) being my introduction to birding a long time ago. I was offered the chance to accompany Skinny, an experienced bird guide working with Africa Safari Experience, into the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and the surrounding areas in Livingstone. I was given information by Skinny that I had never heard before in all the years I've been interested in our birds in Zambia. I now wonder, are oxpeckers being killed by the chemicals which cattle are dipped in? These guides have noticed a great reduction in the numbers of these birds. Skinny was amusing and gentle in his approach, stopping when I asked about plants, dung, bird feathers etc. It was a well paced and very enjoyable morning. I'd recommend the company's birding tours.

I enjoyed seeing different types of birds including vultures, vervet monkeys, giraffes and buffalos. Loved it.
We had a brilliant time on the birding safari. Early start because its the best time of day for the birds to be more active. Started with a safety brief. There was 3 people in my party. We had an armed guard, a very knowledgeable guide and a very knowledgeable trainee guide with us. We saw lots of amazing birds, perched, flying, looking for food and calling etc. We must of seen over 40 species of birds. A few that are hard to find so we where really lucky to see them. We learnt so much information about the birds and what was so amazing is seeing them in their natural habitat doing their thing. Also while walking around the national park we saw lots of other animals too. We are definitely booking the birding safari again when we return to Africa in 2 years time.
What an incredible experience! Our early morning birding safari with African Safari Experience was absolutely fantastic and a wonderful way to start the day. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about the wildlife, especially the birds. Their ability to spot birds from such a distance and identify them so quickly was genuinely impressive! They shared so much fascinating information about the different species, their behaviour and the surrounding environment, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Being out early in the morning, surrounded by the sounds of nature and watching the wildlife come to life was truly magical. We saw a fantastic variety of beautiful birds, along with plenty of other wildlife along the way, making it much more than just a birding experience. The whole safari was relaxed, comfortable and very well organised, and the guides made us feel welcome throughout. Their enthusiasm and knowledge really made the experience special. I would highly recommend African Safari Experience to anyone interested in wildlife and birding. An unforgettable morning and another fantastic experience that we’ll remember for a long time!
Our guide was very knowledgeable, and I enjoyed the ride overall, but a bit more information upfront would have made it much more enjoyable. We were not told that we would be walking at some length through dusty, dung-filled paths, so I wore comfortable sandals, which led to the need to focus on avoiding big heaps of dung rather than on the wonderful scenery around us. Participants should be advised to wear comfortable hiking shoes.
Such a great time with Friday and Eric walking in the park finding birds. Friday was very knowledgeable and knew every bird we saw. Eric was a great driver and all in all it was a fabulous morning.
Our guide, Skinny, knew everything about birds. He was happy to answer questions and also explained questions about trees or the history of the park. He also had a book to show the birds that we heard, cause most of them we didn't see. I guess you have to be lucky to see a lot of birds, but we did see some nice ones and definitely heard a lot of their singing. We were also lucky to spot some other animals on the way. Overall it was a nice experience!
We highly recommend this safari for those wanting an all-round experience of wildlife in the Zambezi River environment. We were collected from our lodge on time and driven to the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park where we were met by our guide, Skinny. Our main interest was birding but Skinny was keen to show us all the park had to offer. We were pleasantly surprised to come across two white rhinos very early in the trip which for us was a highlight. The safari route follows the course of the Zambezi River, and this has the benefit of providing both good birding as well as seeing other general game. In the end we recorded over 30 species of birds, and of the other wildlife: rhino, wildebeest, impala, warthog, zebra and tree squirrel. The safari includes a short walk along the riverbank under the watchful eye of Skinny and an armed park ranger who kept a lookout for elephants. These were absent on the walk, but very much in view later at the Maramba River Lodge where we were staying. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the safari even though some of the elusive rare birds were not seen. Skinny had many interesting anecdotes and was very knowledgeable on all aspects relating to the bush and wildlife. If you are serious about learning about the region's wildlife and history this tour is well worth taking. The walking component is not strenuous and should be easily manageable by most. We are both over 60 and managed fine. Water and light refreshments are provided. Also, every effort was made by the guides to make sure that we felt safe.
I was very excited for this trip. The excitement was even more when I got into the game vehicle — I was so happy, I had never experienced something like this before. This was my first time going into the national park for sunrise. The river was shining — beautiful. The tour guide was really on top of answering our question, explaining even the little details. The snacks were great, and the little picnic spot was lovely. The communication was excellent between the company and us. My favorite part was seeing the fish eagles and hearing all the birds sing in the morning. We even got to see some hippos and zebras! A walking safari, is an excellent way to see the wildlife, and I felt safe knowing the car was nearby. In June, it is very cold here, so dress warmly and wear layers. It was amazing, and I would recommend this trip to anyone!
Our Birdie Safari with African Safari Experience was an incredible adventure from start to finish! We were picked up early in the morning and taken to the beautiful Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Just being in the park was magical, but walking through it while spotting birds made the experience truly special. Our guide, Friday, was fantastic—friendly, enthusiastic, and incredibly knowledgeable about birdlife. He made the walk both fun and educational, pointing out species we never would have noticed on our own. Beyond the amazing variety of birds, we were also treated to incredible sightings of water monitor lizards, hippos, giraffes, and zebras! It felt like something out of a nature documentary. To top it all off, we were surprised with delicious snacks at the end of the safari, which was a thoughtful and much-appreciated touch. This tour is perfect for anyone looking for a unique twist on the traditional safari experience. If you’re visiting during the cooler months (June or July), be sure to dress warmly—mornings can be chilly! Highly recommended for nature lovers and anyone looking to experience Zambia in a new and exciting way!
I had an amazing birding safari with African Safari Experience! The guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate, helping us spot a wide range of bird species—including some real rarities. The locations were stunning, peaceful, and rich with wildlife. Everything was well-organised, and the experience felt both personal and professional. Highly recommend ASE for any birding enthusiast or nature lover!
I had a fantastic birding safari with African Safari Experience. Our guide, Friday, was incredibly knowledgeable, punctual, and had an impressive understanding of bird species. He answered all our questions with patience and enthusiasm, which made the experience really enjoyable. In addition to the amazing bird sightings, we were lucky to see some incredible wildlife in the park as well. Highly recommended!
Our birding safari with African Safari Experience was truly unforgettable. The guides were not only incredibly knowledgeable about the wide variety of bird species but also warm and welcoming throughout the journey. I highly recommend the birding safari; it’s an experience not to be missed! Huge thanks to Steve and his team for their outstanding work!
During our visit to the bird sanctuary in Livingstone, Zambia, we had an incredible experience that exceeded all expectations. The sanctuary itself is a peaceful haven, teeming with diverse bird species, from vibrant bee-eaters to majestic fish eagles. The real highlight, however, was our guide. Exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate, he provided fascinating insights into the behavior, calls, and habitats of the birds we encountered. His keen eye helped us spot species we would have otherwise missed, and he patiently answered all our questions. The sanctuary was well-maintained, and the walkways offered great views without disturbing the natural environment. A must-visit for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts alike.
Wow was so amazing. Saw so much. Guides knew everything and were so accommodating of the family of various ages and speeds. Super
A trip and a half for my wife and myself. A wonderful trip that we finished off in Livingstone. We did a few activities with African Safari Experiences who provided us with super service and absolute professionalism in all we did. The Birding Safari is alot more than we expected. We simply did not expect to see such a variety in what was not a huge area. We got to spot and photograph plenty of species and got the low down on each. Wonderful. We are not experts but know a little about our birds and so there was just enough information for us to get a bit deeper into all things feathered.
Just wonderful! A life-enhancing experience that I don't hesitate to recommend. It's more than simply seeing birds, but experiencing the environment.
We enjoyed an easy walk along the Zambezi river. We sighted at least 20 different types of birds. The guide was very knowledgeable. He included information about calls, nesting habits, predator protections and food preferences. Delightful!
This was one of the most amazing experiences of our trip when we went early in the morning with our excellent guide into Livingstone Park which was alive with bird life . We saw so many birds that we had never encountered before on our African excursions and our guide, Friday, had so much knowledge it was incredible ! For all bird lovers , don’t miss this trip with African Safari Experience
Never having been on a birding expedition - and really having very little interest in birds - I was totally unprepared for the beauty of this safari. Touring along in a motorboat on the Zambezi and seeing pods of hippos sinking and surfacing, and the BEAUTIFUL African birds and water creatures was a delightful surprise! The high point of the excursion was the exquisite meal that was spread before us on a sandy beach, pulled out of coolers and cupboards on board! Sitting on camp chairs next to the water where we could hear birds and other African wildlife all around us, we enjoyed EVERY aspect of the outing! It was so sad to pack up and leave such a charming spot!
Great morning bird watching only downside was I got my lens soaked the day before at Vic Falls so it wouldn't work. The trip was excellent, the guides and guard could not have been more friendly and knowledgeable, the 3 hours went by in a flash , another trip I will do again and that time I'll make sure the lens is dry. Again a shout out to the guides, superb guys all round
We worked with Steve and Connie at African Safari Experience and booked both the walking bird tour and the birding boat cruise. These were two wonderful experiences, Arnold was a fantastic guide, and I got 50 life birds on the two trips combined !!! Along the way we also saw hippos, giraffes, monkeys, antelope and more. Snacks and drinks were included. The variety and abundance of birds, The guides’ encyclopedic knowledge and infectious enthusiasm all combined to make both of these more than I could have asked for. African Safari Experience dealt with all logistics including pick up and drop off door to door from/to our hotel.
We had to get up very early for this trip in order to have the best chances at seeing a lot of different birds. Arnold is so very good at spotting birds, it's unbelievable! Many times he pointed out birds to us that we would have missed otherwise. Even just hearing the sound of a bird he can tell you the species. During our walk in the park we were joint by a ranger with a gun that could protect us if necessary. We saw a lot of different birds and made some great pictures. The park has such a variety of species and the birds are so colorful sometimes! Highly recommend!
An amazing nice experience. It was an entertaining and educational safari. Vinnie, our guide, was really super great and the birdlife absolutely magical!
This activity was very cool! You have to get up a little early to see most of the birds, but my boyfriend and I didn't mind. You will be picked up at your lodge and dropped off again. Our guide Arnold was very friendly and really knows all about the birds in the nature park. At first we found it difficult to find the birds in the trees ourselves. Arnold, of course, has more experience and pointed out one bird after another. Personally, I am a big fan of the colored birds. We saw some blue and purple 'lilac breasted roller', that was my favorite. But also the green and yellow 'bee-eater' is super beautiful. My friend got excited by the big birds of prey. In the end, both happy. :D Well-groomed activity and friendly people. Drinks and a cookie on the way were also provided. Highly recommended!
