Fanatically interesting and entertaining exploration of the musical landscape of Sefton Park, joining the dots between George Formby and Echo and the Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes and Courtney Love. Tourguide Paul was fun and likeable. A great way to spend an afternoon.

Itinerary
Walking in and around the stunning Victorian oasis that is Sefton Park, you’ll see why it was named in 2024 by The Times as one of the Best Places To Live in the UK, Sefton Park stretches lazily across 235 acres of tranquil, stunning landscapes and waterways. It is a true gem in our city’s crown, with a fascinating history of it’s own, but the park’s role as home and inspiration to so many musicians over the years since it opened, as a backdrop, as artists’ muse and even today as a live venue is what we’re here to talk about. From Bjork to the Bunnymen, from early Arctic Monkeys to the smash hits of Atomic Kitten to Africa Oyé - The UK’s largest free celebration of African Music and Culture. It’s all here. From George Melly, George Formby and George Harrison to park design legend Edouard André, Jamie Webster and The 1975. From Frankie to The Farm. From to Love to The La’s, Pulp to The Stone Roses...you get the idea. Not everything's about The Beatles (even if we do mention them)!

Great tour by Paul recently. He's really knowledgeable and passionate, with his enthusiasm shining through. I'm a fan of the early 80's Liverpool music scene however learnt a few nuggets of extra info, alongside some local history too - a great two hours well spent. Get yourselves booked and down there! 😎
I spent the glorious Bank Holiday Monday with five other guests on a two hour guided tour of the Seton Park area experiencing the history of the culture area. From the founding of St Michael's in the Hamlet to a side street that changed the history of music in the 1990s, via tales of The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Courtney Love, Jimmy McGovern, the creation of the park itself and ultimately the story of a cardigan that cost 80p in a Belgian shop and ended up being worth a fortune. The two hours flew by with Paul being a fantastic, entertaining, informative and insightful host. It's a great experience in a lovely area and I highly highly recommend it.
Paul really knows his stuff. I went on the tour as someone who grew up on the music of the early 80’s Liverpool post punk scene. But there were so many gems, and fascinating stories I was unaware of, and being told these “on location” really painted a picture. That’s not to say that’s all this tour is about, there’s history a plenty right from the off, St Michael’s Station, the church, St Charles on Aigburth Road, Lark Lane & Sefton Park itself. Landowners, Steel Magnates, Alternative Clergy, Artists, Musicians it’s all in there. Two hours flew by walking in a beautiful part of the city. Get yourselves booked on!
Paul has personality and friendliness in bags and was great at filling the sizeable gaps in my own knowledge of growing in the 80s and listening to and going to see Liverpool bands. We saw where The Bunnymen lived, where Nasher was working when he heard Relax was a hit, where Larks In the Parks was staged, all brought back lots of great memories. I thought I knew a lot but it was a real education. The 2-hour walk and talk was comfortable, very interesting and ended on the very popular Lark Lane. Great value for money.
Thank You, wonderful Paul! What a great walk, what a wide knowledge, what wonderful stories! From the Bunny-Vatican to 15-year-old Björk and the stolen Cardigan! Lovely walk we will not forget!
The Music & Art Tour of Sefton Park was an insightful and amusingly funny walk around a part of Liverpool I knew little about, until now. Paul our tour guide was a fantastic raconteur, who has vast knowledge of the area and revealed wonderful tales of the artists and musicians who inhabited the streets, at every turn. From George Formby to Echo & The Bunnymen, from George Melly to Julian Cope, there was a great story to tell. I would highly recommend without hesitation. If you want to know a bit more about the music, culture and history of the great city of Liverpool, this tour is essential.
Interesting and informative,Paul the guide knowledgeable and humerous.Wife local to the area able to share some fables and tales.
The tour guide, Paul, is extremely knowledgeable and engaging, it was a pleasure to be in his expert company for a couple of hours
Had a great time on this guided walk. Paul is a mine of information - some of it obscure, lots of it funny, and all of it shared in his inimitable style. I turned up on my own, but that wasn’t an issue at all, billy no-mates need not fear. This is also a really beautiful area to walk around - if you’re not familiar with this bit of Liverpool, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Dead easy to get to the start of the walk, too, it’s right by the train station. Definitely recommended.
Great trip around the area with Paul. Amazing in depth knowledge of the area, music and the subject matter. A must for any music fan of the 70s and 80s. But also any history buffs!
If you’re keen on the music and art of Sefton Park and wish to know more about it then Liverpool Culture Walks is the ideal fit for you. 2 hours of insightful stories and facts going back ages until modern times about the people and places that have had an influence on the area’s cultural history. Hosted and curated by Paul Fitzgerald it is truly a wonderful little educational stroll and well worth giving it your attention.
A wonderful meander around gorgeous Sefton Park & Lark Lane, myths exploded rumours and gossip - you’ll get the inside scoop from one of Liverpools most knowledgeable hosts. There’s stories a plenty from the halcyon days of the 70s & 80s - what might have influenced that eruption of creative talent? Paul has a theory. There are names your parents would have known and how they all influenced what we hear today. The unquestionable spirit of Liverpools creative community is brought to life and stitched together beautifully. Hear about how an apprentice electrician ended up…nah, youll have to wait for Paul to tell you. What was lovely was the shared knowledge from the other people on the tour who contributed to the many conversations.
What a great 2 hours. Paul shows that there is more to the Liverpool music scene than the Beatles and he intertwines stories of 80’s bands with beautiful architecture around Sefton park.
Fabulous afternoon spent with ace people. Paul was really knowledgable and told loads of hilarious stories. Loved it.
What a brilliant tour we were treated to today. Myself,my son,Dylan and our friend,Peter thoroughly enjoyed Paul’s insightful knowledge and facts. We highly recommend you book on to this fantastic couple of hours and learn about who and what shaped the area surrounding Aigburth and Sefton Park, you will love it. Nice one Fitzy mate
We had an informative, historical and highly entertaining tour of the Sefton Park area , living locally but never knowing the stories behind the properties we had passed countless times , this tour was a great way to find an alternative local history . The history and famous residents of the area gives Paul a lot to talk about and we thoroughly enjoyed our walk with him.
Just been on the music and art of Sefton Park walking tour. Paul is a wonderful guide it was so informative and myself and my friend really enjoyed it. Would recommend it highly his passion for his tour really shines through and I will make sure I tell all my friends about it so many facts that I was not aware of
Back to visit family and had heard about this tour and decided to book for my mum & myself. Met our guide Paul at St Michael’s station as planned and started a wonderful walk around the area with our host telling us stories and giving us some interesting facts about a lot of interesting characters whom had lived or where connected to the area. Two hours flew by we got to find out so much about what had happened around this lovely part of the city. SeftonPark and LarkLane will never quite be the same again 😄 Thanks for the boss tour 🙏
Loved our music tour in and around Sevvy Park. Paul is a wealth of musical info, learned some really interesting stuff about the goings on over the decades around the park. From the Beatles to the Bunnymen & lots in between. Was intrigued to learn all about Bono visiting the area several years ago with Sir Paul. He’s a bad grass, that Bono, you know. Highly recommended if you want a proper insight into the musical history of Liverpool and loads of other fascinating stuff like suffragettes trying to blow up the Palm House! A pint down ‘The Lane’ to round off a perfect evening. Lovely.
This was a great tour, led by Paul, who has a firsthand knowledge of local music and Sefton park. It was an enjoyable day and Paul shared a lot of stories of the park and local musicians, some of whom became internationally known eventually. It was a fun way to spend the morning.
Paul's knowledge and passion for the music scene in this beautiful part of the city was amazing. Fantastic buildings, great stories and a beautiful park. It's definitely an evening well spent.
Paul our tour guide is a wealth of knowledge and information on the local area and is on the look out all the time for more stories. He is extremely engaging and very entertaining. This is my favorite part of Liverpool, and I lived in and around the area for several years before I left the country almost 30 years ago. Despite being very familiar with the area, I still learnt a lot. I heard tales and facts about characters I had never heard of before and saw places and heard stories of places I had walked past without noticing before. The walks itself is an easy two hour stroll around a really lovely area of the city. It would be of huge interest for fans of the Eric’s era and beyond. That said I would highly recommend it for anyone that wants a pleasant easy walk around a lovely area, a good laugh and a very light hearted history lesson.
First of all, our guide Paul is a mine of information and knows so much about the musicians and artists of Liverpool, and he clearly loves telling you about it. The stories go back to the 1900s right up to today and cover all your favourite scouse acts and many lesser known bands and artists, too. Taking in the beautiful neighbourhoods and the park itself, Paul tells stories that are funny, exciting, and quite often incredibly surprising. Highlights include the folk music scene of St Michael's, The Bunnymen house, Sefton Park Lake, Palm House and Bandstand, and Lark Lane. Aside from the music, this two hour walk reveals a side of the city you don't see on more obvious city based tours, and it doesn't just focus on The Beatles. I learned so much, had great fun, and would defo recommend this tour to anyone who loves Liverpool music and this part of the city. Especially recommend this to fans of the post punk scene (Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, Pale Fountains etc, but also more mainstream stuff like Beatles, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and even Atomic Kitten!) Excellent
What's the connection between Venus , George Formby and The Bunnymen ? I'm not telling ya but this tour will...really insightful and enjoyable commentary from the highly knowledgeable tour host Paul who regales you with tales you will only hear on this tour...whether you go solo or with a group you are made to feel very inclusive so this is a boss way to find out about a part of the history of the city you very rarely hear...do yourself a favour and GET ON IT...you won't be disappointed
