Excellent guide. We enjoyed the day very much. The bone chapel was very interesting and we saw beautiful churches and cathedral. Lunch was great also.

Visit to a traditional cork factory where we will learn the whole process, from knowing the tree (cork oak), its extraction, the choice, preparation to the final product. Did you know that the bark of the Cork Oak grows every year and that every nine years it has to be removed from the tree, reaching 25 centimeters thick, the perfect material that is resistant to heat, cold and fire, after removing the cork The tree regenerates again, Portugal is responsible for 55% of the world production of cork, today highly valued, whether in decorative wall and floor coverings, or even in the manufacture of sporting goods, the ideal material for baseball grains or cable. fishing rods. However, in many countries cork is best known for being the raw material for wine corks as it allows micro-portions of oxygen to come into contact with wine, so that wine can “age” while maintaining its quality. As you see, our Tour Évora has a lot to learn…
The Historic Center of Évora is an intra-wall urban space, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, located in the city of Évora. [1] [2] The city-museum of Évora has roots that go back to the time of the Roman Empire. The city still conserves, to a large extent in its central nucleus, traces of different civilizations and cultures: Celts, Romans, Arabs, Jews and Christians influenced the culture of Évora. It reached its golden age in the 15th century, when it became the residence of the kings of Portugal. The architectural and artistic quality of the white houses or decorated with tiles and wrought iron balconies, dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, is unique. The city's monuments also had a profound influence on Portuguese architecture in Brazil. The Historic Center of Évora, formed by narrow streets and lanes, patios and wide, has an area of 107 hectares and is clearly demarcated by the medieval walls, with an extension of more than 3 km.
The Água de Prata Aqueduct, also known as Aqueduto da Água da Prata or Aqueduto da Prata, is a complex work of Renaissance hydraulic engineering with the aim of supplying the city of Évora with water. Inaugurated in 1537, it was built during the reign of King João III and designed and built by the royal architect Francisco de Arruda. The aqueduct transports water from springs located in Graça do Divor, within the grounds of the São Bento de Castris Convent, which "have their first beginning at Herdade das Figueiras de Lobo", to the city of Évora, covering about 18 km.
This sinister chapel with its walls and pillars lined with human bones and skulls is estimated to be more than 5,000 monks. Do not be alarmed when at the entrance read; "In the bones we are waiting for here," because it only leads us to reflect on life.
The Church of São Francisco in Évora is a church of Gothic-Manueline architecture. Built between 1480 and 1510 by the stone masters Martim Lourenço and Pero de Trilho and decorated by the royal painters Francisco Henriques, Jorge Afonso and Garcia Fernandes, it is closely linked to the historical events that marked the period of maritime expansion in Portugal. This is evident in the symbols of the monumental nave with its ogival vault: the cross of the Order of Christ and the emblems of the founding kings, D. João II and D. Manuel I.
In Évora, all roads lead to Praça do Giraldo. It has always been this way since its construction in 1571/1573. Praça do Giraldo is an icon of homage to Geraldo Geraldes, Sem Pavor, as he conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167. In thanks for this enormous feat, D. Afonso Henriques named him mayor of the city and frontier of the Alentejo, region that would help conquer.
The Church of Graça or Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça, is an important Renaissance religious monument in the city of Évora, located in Largo da Graça, in the parish of Sé and São Pedro. This monastery, owned by the hermit monks of Saint Augustine, was founded in 1511, having been designed by the architect of the Casa Real Miguel de Arruda. The building is a beautiful example of the purest Renaissance style, with the famous Atlantean figures whom the people of Évora have called for centuries, the "Meninos da Graça" in the façade's acroterias.
Another monument of great value is the Temple of Diana or Temple of Évora, which justifies the importance that the Romans gave to this beautiful city, next to the Cathedral, built in the Roman period, from here we can see the magnificent aqueduct of the "Water of the Silver" , outside the city walls and extending from the outskirts of the city, some of its arches are still visible inside the city, built in the 16th century to ensure water transportation.
But let's go to the cathedral. To get there, you only have to go up Rua 5 de Outubro, one of the best to buy Alentejo handicrafts. The Cathedral of Évora, whose construction started in 1186 and consecrated in 1204, was completed only in 1250. It is a fascinating and imposing monument. All in granite, it is marked by the transition from the Romanesque style to the Gothic style. Two towers from the medieval period can be seen on each side of the façade of the Cathedral of Évora. The tower on the south side is the bell tower, the one whose bells ring in city time. On each side of its portal there are spectacular sculptures of 14th century Apostles, by Mestre Pêro. Outside the Évora Cathedral, however, the dome is the most spectacular architectural element. The lantern tower of the cruise of the ships, from the reign of D. Dinis, crowned by a stone scales needle is in fact the ex-libris of this monument.
Diana's Garden in Évora is located right in the heart of the city's cultural center. Extending from a square called Largo do Conde de Villa Flor, and in perfect harmony with the Roman Temple, Diana's Garden is the ideal place to end, or begin, a sightseeing tour of this beautiful city of Évora.

This is our 2nd private day tour with Anastacia and like the first one, we enjoyed it a lot! She is very knowledgeable about the places we visited, its history, stories and other interesting facts. She is also flexible with time, allowing us to spend more time in the places we were most interested in. She also went above and beyond by suggesting some places and products to shop in and around Lisbon, that we haven’t visited yet in our previous and current trips. We can’t wait to book another tour with her and Kitzel Tours, when we come back to Portugal again in the near future. If you’re looking for an unrushed, relaxed and personalized tour, we highly recommend Kitzel Tours and Anastacia.
Good trip! Recommend for history and adventure and culture and food and fun! Our guide was terrific, Anastasia!
This tour exceeded our expectations as our tour guide Anastasia was a font of knowledge for Évora and the entire Alentejo region. Évora has a distinctive history and is a must visit city when visiting Portugal. A huge bonus was the visit to the cork works as not many of these operations are open to the public. Anastasia was also very knowledgeable about the cork workflow and showed us the different steps. David who is a member of the family owned cork business welcomed us in a very appreciative manner as did his mother and father. A highly recommended tour! Thank you Anastasia!
Our guided tour of Évora was absolutely fantastic. Our guide was amazing! so knowledgeable and passionate about the town’s history, which she brought to life in such an engaging way. She also took us to a wonderful local place to eat that we never would have found on our own. On top of all that, she was genuinely lovely and made the whole experience feel personal. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Portugal.
Anastacia was an excellent guide-very knowledgeable and super helpful. The city is charming and loaded with history. I highly recommend this trip!
Anastacia was a fabulous guide. Incredibly knowledgeable and very helpful. The city is charming and full of interesting history. So glad we went!
It was a beautiful drive from Lisbon. I always like to see the countryside. There were huge bird nests in the power poles! And rolling hills with cork trees. The cork factory was very interesting. Evora was interesting, not spectacular, but it made for a very nice day. Our guide Anastasia was wonderful.
Easily one of the very best of our 8 or 9 tours during a two week vacation! From Lisbon, the tour is a very full day event with a substantial 1.5 hour drive in each direction. The tour was small group (4) with our guide Joao. The weather was sunshine and moderate temps in early November. Pre-tour communications with Joao were excellent with several questions and concerns answered by Viator linked texts within minutes ... Even after working hours! Joao was born and raised in the Lisbon area speaks four languages fluently, and was readily capable of answering questions on any Portugese or Iberian Peeninsula question! He opened some new perspectives and insights into Portugese history and Christianity in general. Further, he is well known, and apparently well-liked, by many of the proprietors at the stops along our tour -- especially at the cork factory and restaurant! He was engaging, had a clear idea of our itinerary, and was very accommodating to adjust schedules to our needs! Evora is another beautiful medieval town with unique stories, beautiful cathedrals, aqueducts, and Roman walls that are well preserved. We found the cork factory and the broad array of cork products particularly interesting! Finally we enjoyed a terrific and traditional Portuguese Sunday lunch that was arranged by Joao! Great tour in the Portuguese country-side and highly recommended!
Our private tour guide, Anastacia, was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable! I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone! She made our day in Evora very memorable! She had an impressive amount of knowledge about the cork trees and factory processes. She knew her way around Evora and offered us many options of what to see and do. For lunch, she recommended a wonderful restaurant that we throughly enjoyed. She was an excellent driver and even got the car for us at the end so that we don’t have to walk back to it. She was very attentive to our needs. It was well worth the money to see the cork factory and Evora on a private tour.
One of our priorities in visiting Portugal was to see a cork farm. We investigated renting a car and spending the night in Evora. We are so glad that we found this day tour from Lisbon instead. We felt so free without luggage and not driving. Anastasia gave us a wealth of information about the cork industry as she deftly drove us from Lisbon. Once we arrived at the farm, she demonstrated the various tools that are used and clearly explained in her excellent English the process of extracting the cork from the trees. She showed us differences in the grades of cork and explained the entire process from raw cork to cork ready to ship. We were amazed at her knowledge and felt so fortunate to have a private guide. There were three large tour buses arriving at the same time. Anastasia skillfully and efficiently showed us everything before the huge, impersonal tours started with the large groups. The sights in Evora were the icing on the cake. Again, Anastasia efficiently led us around town explaining clearly what we were seeing and sharing fascinating history. We appreciated the experience of a traditional lunch with her. My husband was thrilled to have her explain and translate with the wait staff while he used his phone to pay for the first time. She made sure that we were always comfortable while touring and in the car. She is a highly experienced and extremely knowledgeable guide. We highly recommend Anastasia as a tour guide and will seek her out again if we return to Lisbon. She is the BEST!
João, Was on time for tour pickup. Extremely informative, very well versed in history, and made the time a learning experience and fun. Welcomed questions and seemed to have all the answers. His ability to tie history to Portugal was enlightening. If yoy have a choice in tours, pick João!
We had such a wonderful time today. Our tour guide Anastasia was amazing and funny and made us truly appt the tour. I would highly recommend her and the tour company and she took us to such a great place for lunch. We had a great time we were able to stop at the Statue of Jesus which she promised to show us all of Lisbon.
We had a wonderful day exploring Evora with Anastasia! She shared so much information with us about the area. We saw everything on our list!
I cannot stress enough how AMAZING João was on this tour. He is the most informative, respectful, fun, tour guide I’ve ever had! His knowledge of Portugal is beyond. His communication was phenomenal, and always making sure we were taken care of. I will be recommending João and his company Kitzel Tours to everyone I know. Whether you know the country or don’t, you will have the best time with him! Thank you João & Kitzel Tours for the best hospitality and an unbelievable experience! See you again soon! Best regards, Michael and Marisa (from Toronto, Canada)!
Our private tour with, Anatacia, was absolutely fantastic. We went at our own pace, ate lunch peacefully, and enjoyed ÉVORA! Anatacia was polite, professional, and knowledgeable. We had great conversations. and laughs. What a great day!!!!
João was an amazing tour guide with incredible knowledge about so many topics. It was a pleasure to talk to and learn from him. The cork factory was really interesting and the town of Evora was a nice change from the bustle of big cities.
Cork and Bones. Excellent adventure into the heart of the Cork countryside with a tour of the city. Enjoyed our tour guide and her knowledge of the area.
Evora was nice, but we had higher expectations. The bones chapel is something different, but the highlight for us was the visit to the cork factory. The tour guide (Anastasiya) was excellent.
This is one of the best tours I've ever been on in Europe. Anastasia was our guide, and she is excellent in every way - knowledgeable, a great storyteller, patient and flexible. The pace of the tour was perfect, with just the right amount of time at the cork factory and major sights in Evora. We had a wonderful alfresco lunch right outside the Church of St. Francis, and Anastasia even allowed us to stop for a pastry break when we couldn't resist the local delicacies we saw in the windows! Definitely worth a day to discover a historic and charming city in the countryside. We'll be looking to book a tour with this company again when we're back in Portugal. Thanks Anastasia!!
Great tour. The Cork factory was an unexpected great surprise. The church and nativity museum was wonderful. Great lunch location. Anastasia has a great grasp of History. She is a great guide. Patient and kind.
We had a great tour with Joao. He was very engaging and informative. The highlight for us was the Cork factory tour. Highly recommended.
My tour guide João Andre with Kitzel Tours provided a great experience to learn and appreciate Evora for its natural beauty, resources and history. João is knowledgeable, professional, courteous and puts you at ease with his sense of humor and relatable personality. I would definitely recommend this day trip to learn more about the Alentejo region in Portugal !
It was a pleasure to spend the day with Anastasia touring a cork factory and Evora. She also provided general knowledge about Lisbon and Portugal as we drove. Highly recommend. You will be pleased with the tour.
The personal tour of Evora accompanied by Anastasia was absolutely delightful! We learned so much and followed our own pace which was helpful. We would highly recommend this experience for people prefer an intimate experience rich in diversity, history, culture and local knowledge.
Pedro did a great job of getting us to all the places we wanted to see without dealing with the large crowds on Saturday. We sawcit all and even attended mass in the Basilica of the Holy Trinity which can seat 9000 people. There weren't that many but it was still pretty full. Stopped at a small coffe house for a sandwich then off the the village where the children lived back in 1917! An enjoyable day with lots of interesting history provided by Pedro.
Joao Andre was the best!! Fluent in English, and many other languages, he absolutely made our trip to Evora fun and informative. Easy conversation and tailored our trip for us perfectly! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! I would give more stars if I could. Truly great.
Cork factory was interesting Our guide was so fun and full of information. climbing the steps of the tower and seeing the view was lovely.
This tour was beyond outstanding plus. All communication with Kitzel was thorough, thoughtful, professional and timely. Was unsure the participant # (max at 6); yet my wife and I had a private tour. Our guide, Anastasiya, was exceptional. Very knowledgeable, very considerate, affable, always asking as to status / thoughts / needs, and beyond fun / enjoyable. She is a commensurate customer service professional. On the drive she gave continuous information regards the region, the cork process (you see numerous cork trees on the drive), the storks nesting on the electrical metal poles, grape and olive vinyards. She did the cork factory tour, with great insights regards the process and history. Our tour of Evora was insightful with historic references, we visited all the key areas and she allowed appropriate time, with back and forth questions and follow up, plus lingering as needed and inquiring as to status / needs. / food / rest. She also helped me with some purchase decisions. My wife was a little tired and did do the end of the tour to the cathedral and ruins (she took a rest break at the main square), and when we returned Anastasiya got the car was returned to pick us up. Over and above the call of duty so to speak. On the ride back she took a side trip to show us a cactus farm which was interesting (had no idea there a cactus fruit). Great information and conversation on the way back on all sorts of topics. Have another tour with another company that was paid and not cancellable or I would have eagerly switched to Kitzel. Nick and Patricia
This private tour with Joao Pedro was, by far, the highlight of a week's vacation in Portugal. He's incredibly knowledgeable about the region, and went out of his way to customize our experience. He shared his expertise in the development of cork production, as well as all kinds of agriculture. Really passionate about his country and you can tell this is his expertise--he's not just repeating a script. He showed us off the beaten path places, and stopped into locals only kinds of places. We walked into a house/shop and watched clay pottery being made in one room, and hand painted in another room by a local family. We were the only people in the workshop, and it felt like we were part of the family. He was patient and allowed us to spend all the time we wanted in Evora and Alentejo. He shared lunch with us in a tiny little restaurant which was part of a medieval building--just amazing architecture, and the food was delicious! I can't wait to come back to Portugal and have him guide me through another area. Book a tour with Joao Pedro--you will not be disappointed! I feel like I have a friend in Portugal now!
Our guide Joao Costa was on time to our hotel with lots of enthusiasm and did a great job of playing the weather and giving us some history of the area as we drove to the cork factory - a must do. Then to the city of Evora for a beautiful tour of the church and cathedral with lots of info along the way. Had a nice traditional lunch in town - Joao was very nice to offer loads of of info about other places we were going to visit in the upcoming days. Our friends have already booked him for their trip in Porto and Lisbon. And Viator makes it all so easy with the booking process. I always use them...Enjoy Portugal everyone...
We really enjoyed this trip and our guide Anastasia. This was a great way to get outside of Lisbon and see the beautiful sites of Evora. Anastasia was very knowledgable and kind.
I'm so glad we took the full day from Lisbon to visit Evora and surrounding areas! We had two weeks in Portugal and this excursion allowed us to see highlights of the Alentejo area that we otherwise wouldn't have had time for ourselves. But what made it particularly special was the guide's in depth knowledge of the area. As we drove the hour and half from Lisbon she explained sights along the way. We stopped at a cork factory (more like a barn) and saw up close how the cork material is put together ready to be shipped. It was very intriguing to see this all done by hand! It sounds corny but it was actually very educational and something I'll remember every time I pop a champagne cork! The cork store has everything imaginable for purchase. Then we headed to Evora and saw the Chapel of Bones, cathedrals, Roman ruins and colorful shops. The guide takes you to the ticket windows of the churches where you purchase your own entry tickets (inexpensive). Guides get in for free with their ID. So she was able to show us everything inside and provide the narrative. She was also very good about capturing photos of the two of us. She had a lunch booked for us but we weren't hungry for a sit-down meal so we just grabbed small bites at a local spot within the walled city and kept exploring! I'd read tour ideas about also visiting the megalithic sites or seeing Mourao (by Spain's border) along with Evora but there is so much to see and enjoy within Evora that I'm glad we didn't add on the extra driving time. If your itinerary allows, I'd recommend an overnight in Evora so you can truly experience this beautiful area of Portugal.
Our private day tour of Evora and Alentejo with Anastasia was great. She was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. We got to see the amazing sites in town and she helped us find one of the best meals we had in our time in Portugal. It was our favorite tour of the trip!
We had a wonderful day with Joao and Kitzel Tours. We had originally booked this tour 5 years ago and had to cancel due to a medical emergency. Joao was incredibly kind and understanding and that stuck with me. I’m so glad we were finally able to take our trip to Portugal and go on this tour. We started the day at a cork farm, learning how the cork is harvested and then had a chance to shop for cork products. Then we continued to the lovely town of Evora and visited the Chapel of Bones, San Francisco church, Roman Temple, and the Cathedral. Joao had an excellent recommendation for lunch with local cuisine and I had a nice glass of Alentejo wine. Joao was friendly, knowledgeable, and had excellent recommendations for photo opportunities. I think our day in Alentejo was a lot more meaningful having a guide who could tell us interesting information about all the sites, as opposed to trying to visit the sites on our own. He answered all of our questions and gave us insight on the architecture and culture in the region. I’m so glad we finally got to meet Joao and highly recommend this tour!
The tour guide was fantastic. She gave us so much information on this quaint little town. She even recommended a good restaurant.
João was an amazing tour guide! He was so knowledgeable about the history of èvora and the cork industry. We went to the cork factory and bought some great products made there and then continued onto Èvora where we saw a couple beautiful churches, had lunch, saw the temple of Diana and the chaple of bones. João explained everything to us about these sites in such great detail. We appreciated him so much! Thank you so much for a great day! I will be recommending this tour to all our friends and family who want to visit Portugal!
Our private tour was both informative and relaxed. The guide went out of his way to make sure we saw and did everything we express an interest in. Especially interesting was the visit to the cork processing facility. Overall, this tour not only met but exceeded expectations.
Wonderful day. Really appreciated the hotel pick up and drop off. Anastasia was a knowledgeable guide. She made it easy for us to appreciate the history of the area and ensured we were able to enjoy the sites. From the bridge, to the storks, to the cork, green wine and beyond. Our heads are spinning with the amount of information she managed to impart. Evora was a delightful town to explore. A nice break from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon.
We enjoyed our tour very much. Anastasia was wonderful as our guide. She was very knowledgeable and she took great care of us and made sure we got to see everything we wanted to see. Evora was lovely and I especially enjoyed the Chapel of Bones.
The cork factory was the highlight of our tour…David was wonderful there! Evora was so beautiful and we loved our visit. Our guide Xavier was very informative and we enjoyed talking with him! We would definitely call him again…a private tour was the best adventure!
We had a wonderful time with Anastasiya in Evora! Anastasiya is extremely knowledgeable and she has such a calm energy, it's a pleasure to spend time with her. We were on our "babymoon" so she adapted the tour to our slower pace. We would recommend!
This day trip to Evora and the Alentejo region from Lisbon with Anastasia was truly one of the highlights of my over two-week trip to Portugal. Not only is Evora beautiful and rich in history, but Anastasia made it understandable and relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed her company and where she took me, from a cork factory visit, museum, parks, churches, to food. Definitely recommend Kitzel Tours, and can't wait to go back!
Our private guide was wonderful- intersesting, well informed. The guide blended history, culture, and food- the ideal combination. My favorite thing was going to a cork factory and learning all about how cork is harvested and made into various things. The other thing was going to the top of the cathedral.
Our tour guide was João. He was friendly, fun and is very knowledgeable. A lot of history but explained in a fun and simple way. A highlight of our visit to Alantejo was a visiting a cork factory where we learned the process of how the tree bark becomes not only the wine corks but chairs, shoes and beautiful purses! We will definitely will be looking forward to more of his tours in a future vist. Highly recommended!!
We had a wonderful tour! Joao was so knowledgeable and engaging! I will never look at a cork the same way 🥰
Anastasia was AMAZING!! Not too much, not too little in regards to energy, information, and itinerary. Probably the easiest guide we’ve had to make conversation with, the whole day flowed naturally! We weren’t expecting to have such a good time at our first stop, the cork factory, but it was surprisingly fun and we learned a lot about one of Portugal’s biggest industries! The bone chapel was all it was hyped up to be and more, and the tourists are definitely less in numbers compared to Lisboa and Sintra. She always offered to take pictures of us along the way, had great recommendations for travel, food, and wine, and shared lovely anecdotes that tied perfectly into our trip! This is THE company to use if you want a personalized private tour around Evora ☀️
Anastasia was our guide for the day and she was wonderful—personally engaging, punctual, patient, and very well-informed. Besides a rainy start, we could not have asked for a better excursion!
Joao is an amazing guide. He was fun, extremely knowledgeable on many subjects, chatty and thought provoking. We saw many wonderful sights and learned so much on our tour of Evora and the cork factory.
The entire experience was great — I was initially more excited for evora than the cork factory, but ended up enjoying the latter just as much. Would 100% recommend
