We took a private tour to Porto with David, and this was one of the most enjoyable tourism experiences we’ve ever had! The Porto / Vila Nova de Gaia area is absolutely stunning, with so much to see and do. We could have easily spent multiple days there, but due to our scheduling we had to pack as much as we could into just one day. David is the ultimate professional that we all hope to meet when we sign up for tours. He was extremely personable and knowledgeable, and he provided many helpful tips for us, ensuring that we had the best possible time and that we were able to see all the places we wanted to go. Thank you, David, for a wonderful trip!

Itinerary
We will enter the train station where you will have time to admire the amazing tile work and take pictures.
One of the enigmatic places in Porto that inspired J.K. Rowling to write the Harry Potter saga.
Pictures inside and/or praying. Please note that sometimes this church is closed during our tour and we can't go inside to take pictures. Nevertheless we will show you other sites if this one isn't open.
This church has a touristic circuit inside. You can do it if you wish but just going around this beautiful building filled with tiles is usually a highlight on its own but we will let you decide whether to take the circuit of not.
We will walk around the area where the Clérigos Church and Tower are and you are free to decide to go up the tower for a great view of the city or simply take some pictures. This is another monument that you can opt to pay the admission fee and go to the top or just wander around it for pictures.
The famous shopping street of Porto. We can just walk by without stopping if you don't want to shop
We will walk around the traditional Ribeira neighborhood and have lunch at one of the typical restaurants there. We can recommend the best local places to eat. We can also go to a nearby fishing village to try the best seafood and fresh fish. We will adapt it to what you prefer as there are many options.
A great Port Wine tasting house, that owns the oldest Port Wine house as well. This is just an example of a great place to try Port wines but we can take you elsewhere if you prefer. Admission is free and you only have to pay for whatever Port wines you order. If you don't drink Port or any alcohol at all we will add other places to our itinerary to make your day better.
Stop for pictures of the church and to overview the city of Gaia from Porto
The best place to take an amazing picture of the city of Porto as you will be on the opposite side of the river, facing the whole city.

Pedro was an amazing tour guide. He caters the tour to your pace, and interests. He also makes great suggestions of things to see, and every one of them were great decisions. Pedro also throws in a couple of surprises along the way which add to the overall experience. The drive to Porto is approximately 3 1/2 hours each way, but Pedro makes the time go by seamlessly.
Porto is a beautiful must see city in Portugal. Most efficient way to see this place from Lisbon is by a private tour. David did not disappoint us. He arrived on time at our Lisbon hotel and was able to sit our family of 4 comfortably in his nice clean van. Take note that we had big luggages. He didn’t mind passing by Fatima as we randomly requested along the way. It was not originally part of the itinerary. He showed us the highlights of Porto along with great areas where only locals know. He took us to the best local restaurants too. Our family stayed overnight in Porto. David picked us on time again from our Porto hotel the following day before heading to Douro valley. He took care of our family very well until drop off to our hotel close to Lisboa airport where we departed back to USA the following morning. It was a concierge service for a reasonable price.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! David is incredibly talented and kind - his knowledge of Portuguese culture and history runs very deep and more importantly, he is hilarious, friendly, and altruistic. I traveled with my mother and brother with David to Porto from Lisbon (making stops in Obidos and Nazare) and through the Douro Valley. David’s English was so good that I initially thought he was American, despite the fact that he was raised in the Lisbon area and in reality is just very gifted with languages (he speaks five of them). There was never a dull moment - we had so much fun with David. Thank you David - you were the best guide to the beautiful country of Portugal we could have asked for! Looking forward to staying in touch my friend.
David and Daniel were very easy to work with and organized and prompt. It was an easy drive to Porto in a very comfortable van with Wifi and weather provided. We enjoyed our day and their assistance.
Thank you, thank you David for being a fantastic guide! Knowledgeable, accommodating, funny and friendly. We had the best time.
David was fantastic! Very knowledgeable, so accommodating to our special requests, and lots of fun! It was a great memorable day in Porto.
Pedro our guide was fantastic! Very knowledgeable, kind and patient. He will customize the tour to meet your expectations. He was friendly and very attentive. Porto was my favorite place in Portugal, you will not be disappointed.
We had a truly amazing time with Pedro. His flexibility, knowledge and friendliness were appreciated. We took two additional stops on our tour, one to Fatima, one to a medieval village, and had a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, O Rita, and Pedro joined us. We arrived in Porto, and had an all encompassing tour of the city before being dropped us off at our hotel that evening. Highly, highly recommend this private tour in Portugal.
Our family traveled to Lisbon for a family wedding. We decided to hire a tour guide so that we could take a week, prior to the wedding, to enjoy some of Portugal’s countryside. Luckily, for my family, I hired a “super guide”. Words cannot explain how wonderful, respectful, and knowledgeable David was. He went well beyond the call of duty. He pushed a baby stroller, wheelchair, and was even willing to stop the van “on the highway RIGHT NOW” (obviously an inside joke). He made special detours for us to visit with relatives, never once saying that it was too far, inconvenient, or not part of the itinerary. Even my relatives enjoyed his company and friendship. David became part of our family. So, if you want a tour guide that is experienced, gregarious and a fantastic guy HIRE David – you will not be disappointed.
If you are looking for the best travel experience, congratulations... you found him! David will personalize your trip just the way you want it. He spent days with our family of 6 and planned special activities for us all! We hiked, drove, explored, took boat rides and horse carriages, enjoyed local food, pastries and drinks, made detours to visit our family across the country, and overall had the BEST time! David became part of our family; my 2 year old ran to him every morning! No matter what you're looking for on your trip, David will not disappoint. You will learn fun facts about Portugal, see more than you can even imagine, and frankly will make a new great friend. Our only negative, we had to say goodbye! We hope to see David again in future travels and would welcome him to our home anytime!
We had an amazing day with Pedro. He was very accommodating and warm and personable. He knew so much about the history of and architecture in Porto which we loved. Even though the drive was long we did not feel it at all. We felt like we were hanging out with a good family friend the whole day! We strongly recommend this tour - there’s nothing like having your own personal ride and guide like this!!
We had the most wonderful experience during our private tour of Porto! Our tour guide was Pedro, who was incredibly knowledgeable and who made us feel so welcome and comfortable! He was so accommodating, even after we needed to change our start time to an hour later due to an emergency at a very late notice. Truly above and beyond our expectations and we had the most incredible time. Cannot recommend Pedro enough!
David is great. He is very friendly, accommodating, and easy-going. He has great food recommendations too. We had an awesome time visiting this charming city of Porto.
We had a fabulous day trip from Lisbon to Porto thanks to David Monteiro, @WhatToDoinPortugal. He was super friendly and knowledgeable. The communications prior to the trip was excellent. The rides back and forth were comfortable and felt faster than what it was due to the fun conversation and great driving. Once in Porto, we got to see so much, definitely more than what we would have done on our own. David was able to accommodate everything we wanted to do, including getting gelato for my son and a fabulous port tasting at Kopke. We did so much yet never felt rushed. David was fun and generous, like a family friend we had known for years. It was evident that he cares about his clients. I would definitely recommend David to anyone looking for great tours in Portugal.
We booked this private tour from Lisbon to Portugal and are so glad we did! David was extremely professional and was quick to answer any questions I had before the day of the tour. Our tour guide was Pedro and he was fantastic! He is a walking book of knowledge on Portugal's history and culture. We had an absolute incredible day touring Porto with him and would not have visited the sites we did had we gone on our own. On the way to Porto we made a stop in the mediavel town of Obidos for a walk around which was great. In Porto, Pedro took us to a lovely place for lunch in between seeing the sites. At the end of our tour, we stopped at Taylor Fladgate in Gaia for port tasting. Pedro was friendly and so personable and we felt like we had known him for a while. The tour vehicle was comfortable and made for a great ride. I will definitely recommend this tour should any of our friends and/or family decide to visit Lisbon. Thank you David and especially Pedro!
Victor Arouche is a history Buff who has fallen in a perfect job for his expertise, his love for people and his enthusiasm. The four hour porto Portugal walking tour covered all the highlights of the inner city and took us right through the important landmarks, churches and ended on the don pedro ponte Luis bridge
Pedro was an amazing tour guide. He was so knowledgeable about Porto, and even about landmarks along the long journey to Porto. We were picked up in a large van and we began our trip to Porto with him telling us a little bit about Lisbon. When we arrived at Porto, we parked the van and proceeded on our city tour. Again, Pedro was so full of information, like a walking book. The views were spectacular. We stopped for an amazing lunch and then later in the day completed our trip with some port wine tasting. On our way back, we had a short but beautiful stop at a resort bar with spectacular views of the city. What a nice surprise! In the meantime, Pedro grabbed the vehicle and we departed Porto back for Lisbon.
David Monteiro, @WhatToDoInPortugal, is the best, and it shows in everything he does. We enjoyed our tour of the Algarve with him two days earlier so much, we signed-up with him for a day trip to Porto. We could have taken a train and gone on our own, and we would have wasted a lot of time and missed a lot of the major sites. With David, you don't worry about any of that. David himself stands out, he is everything you would wish for in a tour guide. It's like having a family member in Portugal who has offered to show you around. He is native Portuguese who speaks flawless English with an American accent. I joked that if he told me he was from California, I would not doubt the claim! The detailed knowledge he has of Porto is extraordinary. He knows the restaurants and their price points in the area you're likely to stop for lunch (how fancy you want to eat is up to you), and personally knows the owners of the cafe we ate in, overlooking the Douro from near the most famous of 7 bridges. He is an excellent driver, the van is comfortable and spotless, he even has a mobile wifi hotspot device onboard. He is willing to stay at a location as long as you want to stay, then backed that by waiting patiently while we stopped for 45 minutes to listen to a public concert put on by the Porto Symphony Orchestra. I never saw him glance at his watch or appear to be the least bit impatient to get moving to the next location. Need a restroom break (you might, it's a 200-mile trip from Lisbon to Porto)? Just ask, he knows the locations of 30 or so restrooms along the route, you're never more than 10 minutes away from one. It's details like that that make or break a day trip, and he excels at it. The second thing that stands out is Porto itself. The city was better and more interesting than I thought it would be. Once you get there, this becomes a walking tour of the city's major sites. It was a little hilly, and there are some steps involved, but I did not regard any of it as strenuous. David knew details of the various Port wine brands and their tasting rooms, and we enjoyed a very nice tasting in a room overlooking the Douro. This tour is money well-spent.
A wonderful tour mixing what we wanted to see/do with the knowledgeable suggestions from Pedro. We really enjoyed our day!
This is the most worth it tour we booked during our Portugal trip. Porto is absolutely beautiful, the food is amazing, the history is incredible, and we are so glad that our tour guide, David, is warm, sensible, and knowledgeable. He made us feel like there is no rush and our day is completely up to us. We enjoyed our leisurely lunch by the Douro river and port wine tasting! We were a group of 4 and we all agree that Porto was our favorite tour.
Great choice! David was professional, kind, knowledgeable, accommodating, and engaging. He don’t give a “cookie cutter” tour. He asked us our preferences to personalize the experience. Porto is a beautiful place - perfect for all travelers! Lots to do!
What an eye-opener! 5 days with David touring not just the city of Porto (I'd have to admit Porto is a delightful city!) and the Douro Valley and its wineries (hiccup! followed by a nap), and a cruise up the river, but other side-trips and stops along the way up and back from Lisbon, and all with David's wonderful informative commentary at every step. In my previous review I waxed lyrical about how wonderful David's tours are, but it's true, we've done several day-trips now, and this 5 day Porto trip, and a 5-day Algarve trip (guess TA will make me wait another 3 months before I can add another review for that! :-( ). But it's all true, David is like an old friend who welcomes curious travellers to his home country, and shows them what it's all about, like we've been friends for years. Thank you, David, you're worth every €!
Our tour guide David Monteiro, owner of What to do in Portugal was GREAT! ! He exceeds the Excellent Rating! David is professional, knowledgeable and great to talk to. I had been in contact with David for a couple of weeks before we arrived in Portugal. He went out of his way to help plan our trip to Portugal. By the time we arrived in Portugal I felt like I had known David for years. Our day in Porto was great! David showed us all the highlights and giving us the history. David was always making sure that we were enjoying our day and doing everything we wanted. David's wife Michelle joined us that day. I felt like we were family spending the day in Porto. We were talking, laughing and having the Best Time! We especially enjoyed our Port Wine tasting at Kopke. The 3 hour drive back to Lisbon went by fast with all of us talking and laughing. David and Michelle made our day in Porto memorable. I HIGHLY recommend a tour with David and his company. You will not be disappointed! On a side note....David is a very conscientious and safe driver, his car and van are very comfortable and clean with Wifi, water and umbrellas. David thinks of everything to make sure you are comfortable. We look forward to future tours with David on our next trip to Portugal. Thank You, David and Michelle for going above and beyond! The memories you have given us are priceless!! Until the next time....
Was not sure what Portugal had to offer but I was pleasantly surprised and zi can highly recommend a visit to this enchanting Country. There is so much to see and Porto is definitely not to be missed especially the railway station with all the blue and white tiles telling the history.
Knowledgeable and personal guide David who is willing to step above and beyond to make you happy. He knows so much about Porto and Portugal and is great to work with. He took to many wonderful places and explained interesting things. We would never get there on our own and/or with the group. He is very credible, pleasant, and professional and I highly recommend him and this tour
Our tour guide David Monteiro, owner of What to do Portugal, exceeded all our expectations. He contacted us a few days before to ask what time we wanted to start, arrived promptly at our Lisbon hotel in a very comfortable car. I tend to get car sick, so I sat in front with David and my husband sat in back seat. David is quite knowledgeable and a great conversationalist. We chatted the entire 3-hr drive into Porto planning our day and getting to hear about Portugal’s history, and getting acquainted. We stopped at Manteigaria for coffee and pasteis de nata (David’s treat) shortly after arriving in Porto. Porto is so charming, every site was beautiful. David showed us all the highlights (various churches, Sao Bento train station, Ribeira waterfront, Lello bookstore, rode the funicular, Clerigos tower, had a shot of Ginga cherry liquor) and then took us to one of his favorite fish restaurants Restaurante Tito for lunch, it was one of our best meals in Portugal. In the afternoon, we had a delicious Duoro Valley/port wine tasting at Kopke. The ride home we talked the whole time. David got us back to Lisbon safely in time for our fado reservation, he was very conscientious about our schedule. David made the day so memorable, will definitely reach out to him for more tours on our next visit.
We totally enjoyed our day trip to Porto with David. He is knowledgeable, professional, friendly and he took us to places we would never have found on our own. We would highly recommend David for a totally enjoyable day in Porto! Many thanks,David! Sue and Bill Toronto,Canada
It was a great experience, Porto is a Beautiful place to visit . our guide David was great. Friendly , pleasant and very knowledgeable. We had a great time and we will use him again in the future.Make sure not to make a mistake on booking choose the best David, “what to do in Lisbon.
We took this tour from Lisbon and we were extremely satisfied with the service we had from David, our private tour guide. He made sure we were comfortable and always check if we need anything. He goes beyond what you paid for and is willing to compromise. He was the best among other tours we've taken. We had an amazing time with him. We highly recommend him if you wanna see porto or around Lisbon.
David had a long day showing us around. We had good conversations on the drive up and back to Lisboa. He knew the city and its charming sites very well. A great day with many fond memories. Thank you very much.
Touring Portugal with David and Michelle truly exceeded our expectations. “What to do in Portugal” is an extremely Client Focused tour company. They treat you like they would want to be treated. Our wonderful experience started when David and Michelle met us at the airport. During our week in Portugal, we spent two days with both David and Michelle. One full day visiting Porto and another full day visiting Obidos, Nazare, Batalha and Fatima. Another day, we toured Sintra, Cascais, Belem and Lisbon with Michelle. And our last tour was the Knights of Templar with David. During the long rides and time spent at restaurants, we really got to know each other. When we said goodbye at the airport, we had in fact become “like family”. David’s and Michelle’s knowledge of their country’s history, geography, culture and food is excellent. Their English is perfect. They are flexible and willing to work with your requests, they suggest changes to make for a better experience and will modify the itinerary when necessary. Their vehicles, with Wi-Fi and bottles of water, are comfortable and spotless. When visiting Portugal, spend your time touring with David and Michelle. The list of personal touches is endless and make each day memorable !
A must tour for everyone who visit Portugal. Porto is such a scenic and fun place. We plan to go back and spend more time there next time. Our tour guide, David Monteiro, is very professional, knowledgeable and caring. David is a model for every tour guide. Just perfect in all ways. Thanks David.
We had an amazing journey and experience during our private tour. Our guide David was extremely flexible with timing and even gave us extra time at the end. David customized every stop during the day with popular sites and local finds. We ate lunch at a local restaurant and yet catered to my son's interest and food favorites. On the whole we got to see so much more than we would have from a group tour or if we had done it by ourselves. I booked David for the Sintra and Algarve tour as well. Highly recommend going with David. A totally amazing experience.
Our guide, David, took us to Coimbra and Porto. David was knowledgeable, courteous, friendly and helpful. The vehicle was spacious, new, comfortable and spotless. Numerous bottles of water were provided. The vehicle had WiFi and USB ports. We saw many important landmarks and it was an enjoyable day. Thank you, David!
Would highly recommend this company for your next tour in either Portugal or Spain. Our guide David was very accommodating and knowledgable about the locations we visited. We travelled at a leisurely pace but was still able to maximize our time. The tour was tailor fit to our travel preferences. It was a stress-free experience!
David was an excellent host. He is personable and accommodating and will tailor the tour to your interest. The car had water, wifi (which the kids enjoyed to keep them occupied on a 3 hour drive) and a USB charge port. He picked us up at our hotel, drove us to and showed us around Porto and drove us home. Very easy. No hidden cost. I would do it again.
We hired David to drive the four of us from Lisbon to Porto. He was knowledgeable, flexible (we stopped at a few unscheduled markets & we took lots of photos), and professional. David took care of us when we needed to stop, eat or handle my allergies. His English was amazing - I rode in the front seat with him for 3 hours each way while the others napped in the back - and we discussed history and life. I would highly recommend David to anyone - he is personable and reasonably priced. I would use him again on my next trip to Portugal! He is one of the best tour guides I have ever experienced. You can't go wrong with hiring David!
We did a private day tour of Porto from Lisbon. David was accommodating, very informative, and organized. Since there were a lot of us, David was actually able to get us a second tour guide, Pedro, super quickly, and he was awesome as well! We kind of just went with the flow of the day but David was able to tailor our trip according to us, 2 families (7 adults and 1 toddler). It was a great overview of Porto in the time that we had. Overall, such a great experience and wealth of knowledge! Amazing experience, would highly recommend!
We had the most amazing time with David in Porto! He is extremely knowledgeable about the area and really tailors the tour to what you want to see. Taking care of the small details is what sets David’s tours apart from others. We would highly recommend taking his tour if you want to enjoy a private tour and have a fun time learning about the beauty and history of Portugal.
My girlfriends and I booked a tour with David to Porto and we loved every minute of our trip. It’s a private tour so you can chose wherever you want to go in Porto. It’s about a 3 hour drive from Lisbon to Porto and the 3 of us chatted with David on the way there. He’s very friendly and speaks great English! We didn’t have a problem communicating at all. When we arrived in Porto, I felt like David was a friend showing us around and not our “tour guide”. I highly recommend booking this tour! Our day in Porto with our new friend David was what made Portugal so amazing!
David provided an excellent tour to Porto and met every promise that he made and then some. My wife and I had a great day with him and would highly recommend that you consider him for your own needs when traveling to Portugal. He is willing to accommodate your needs/requests and really cares about his clients. He even drove us to Pastéis de Belém after returning to Lisbon in the evening so that we could purchase some of the pastel de nata (we mentioned on our tour that we hadn't tried them due to the huge line on a previous day). He's good at what he does and charges a very fair price. If you want less stress when you visit Portugal, consider David for at least one, or many tours. Its very much worth it.
David the tour guide gave us an excellent tour. He catered to all our needs and adjusted to what we wanted to see with out time limits. By the end of the trip we felt like we made a new friend.
If you're looking for something to do in Portugal, look no further than "What To Do In Portugal"! This personalized tour is tailored to meet your every need. David, the owner is not only extremely knowledgeable, but he's also friendly, funny and accommodating in every way possible. What we loved about his approach is that you don't feel as though you're on a "tour", but rather that you're touring around with a life-long friend. When I first booked this on Viator, I was a little worried since the cost was much more than I wanted to spend, but looking back, it was the best decision I ever made. My brother, sister and I spent 15 hours with David and we began our tour of Porto walking around the Ribeira district (downtown area) followed by a visit to Burmester winery then climbed the stairs to the Se of Porto (Cathedral) then we walked down to tour the S. Bento train station followed by The Clerigos Church and Tower then off to Carmo and the Carmelitas Church. On the way back to Lisbon, we stopped in Aveiro (the Venice of Italy). This was not even part of the itinerary, but David modified the trip for us to stop in this beautiful city since we had opted out of the sit down lunch in Porto. It was worth every penny and we wish we knew a "David" in every city in the world. He is truly one of a kind and meeting him was the highlight of our trip. Thank you again "What To Do In Portugal"! We can't wait to come back!
My family and I have been on several vacations with lots of great tour companies! However, David Monteiro at “What to do in portugal” has by far been the absolute BEST! Right from the beginning, you could see how passionate and excited he was – he was willing to work with us on creating a flexible schedule that best fit our needs! David’s service, driving and professionalism was outstanding!!!! David made sure we saw the best places in Portugal, tried great local restaurants and was extremely punctual. We did a private tour of Porto, Sintra, Fatima, Lisbon and Obidos. David was able to accommodate all of our requests and interests. David is a very safe driver and has a great car for small/large groups – always very clean! I would highly recommend David and his tour services – it will change the entire dynamic of your time in Portugal. We were lucky to have David as our tour guide and experience Portugal in the best way possible! This review doesn’t come close to the AMAZING experience we had – it is easy for anyone to see how passionate David is about his work, clients and Portugal – thank you David for making our Portugal trip unforgettable!
If you want to have a tour full of satisfactions, choose this option and you will not regret it. David our guide, is a professional: punctual, attentive, helpful, reliable, a perfect gentleman, impeccably clean vehicle and above all speaks perfect Spanish.
