My husband and enjoyed a private morning through lunch cultural and food tour with Raquel. She was excellent in every way: her explanations were thorough and in the depth we requested. She could answer every question about Portuguese history and the current political situation, often expressed in street art she identified. We especially appreciated our time with her in the Moorish Quarter where we visited some Fado haunts and sampled multicultural food offerings. Our word for her was “mellow”. She has a soft appealing voice and moves at just the right pace. We never felt hurried. The time flew past.

Itinerary
We take you from the historical Lisbon of the 12th century till the current times. In a stroll by the off beaten path starting in Downtown, you will find out why Mouraria is such a unique place - the birthplace of the Fado music and the most multicultural neighborhood in Lisbon. 6 stops and more than 10 tastings are included for you to enjoy and be introduced to very local places where we locals go, and to taste the icons and staples of Portuguese food culture and its influences. - Distance: 1,2 miles/2km. - Duration: 3,5 hours. - Physical level: medium - The itinerary involves a certain amount of uphill walking on cobblestones and climbing down steps, typical of old Lisbon streets.
The São Domingos Church, original from the 13th century, has witnessed for centuries faith and massacre, it was several times severely damaged by Lisbon earthquakes and a major fire. After the destructive fire of 1959, it stood closed for several decades. It opened in the 1990s, with a surprisingly simply restored interior, still reminiscent of the signs of the ruins caused by the fire.
The Rossio is the popular name of the King Pedro IV Square (Portuguese: Praça de D. Pedro IV) in the city of Lisbon, in Portugal. It is located in the Pombaline Downtown of Lisbon and has been one of its main squares since the Middle Ages. It has been the setting of popular revolts and celebrations, bullfights and executions, and is now a preferred meeting place of Lisbon natives and tourists alike. Located in the heart of Lisbon, this vibrant and colorful city square is bursting with flower vendors, shoppers and people bustling to and from their jobs.
One of the city's best-loved landmarks and also known as the "Elevator of Carmo," this extraordinary structure was built in 1902 by the Portugal-born French architect Raoul de Mesnier du Ponsard (an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, explaining the structure's similarities to Paris' Eiffel Tower), to connect downtown to Bairro Alto (the lowest and highest points of the city). Originally powered by steam, it's 45 meters (147ft) high, and remains an interesting example of post-Eiffel iron architecture. The top of the Neo-Gothic tower, reached via a spiral staircase, has a splendid view of the city, including over Rossio Square, the castle and the river.
The expressive monument dedicated to Fado and to Mouraria - Cradle of Fado. It consists of a marble block 1.5 meters high that has carved the Portuguese guitar. It is a tribute to the Fado of Lisboa, which originated in the alleys of this neighborhood, sung by poor people, with suffering lives and generous souls. It is also a tribute to the first great diva of Fado Maria Severa, who lived and died in this neighborhood in the 19th century, and to Fernando Mauricio, the crownless king of Fado during the 20th century and contemporary of Amalia, the great queen of Fado, and to all the most famous or anonymous Fado singers in Lisbon.
Probably founded in the 12th century, this church was already used at the beginning of the 14th century. From the intervention of the 16th century, only the rectangular chancel built in 1671 by the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament survived. Rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century, resisted the Lisbon earthquake.
Praça da Figueira is a square in Lisbon Downtown. Prior to the 1755 earthquake, it was the site of the All-Saints Hospital, whose foundations were laid bare during the construction of the current underground car park. In the design of the Marquis of Pombal to Downtown, the square became the main food market of the city. In 1885 a covered market was built there, demolished in the 1950s. Today, the four-story buildings are occupied by hotels, shops and cafes and the square is no longer a market. One of the interesting features is the bronze equestrian statue of D. João I erected in 1971, by Leopoldo de Almeida. The square is served by the Rossio metro station on the Green Line, as well as several public bus and tram lines.
Martim Moniz Square is the starting point of the famous tram 28, a tram line that runs through the oldest part of Lisbon. Although it is a regular transport line, tourists are often the longest in line to board. This square is something of a mini Chinatown, looking up to Saint George castle, and is the gate for Mouraria, the city's most multiethnic and multicultural neighborhood.
The theater was built in the nineteenth century, comes to us with all the strength of the past when the culture was only accessible to the elites. Today, the theater is open to all. In the main hall, Vihls' giant portraits of great actresses have been printed on the walls, there are guided tours, a bookstore and a friendly lounge with café / restaurant.
The Rossio Train Station is the primary train station in Lisbon. This railway station is important for visitors, as it connects Lisbon to the popular town of Sintra and passes the two stations that serve the Palácio Nacional de Queluz. The Rossio Train Station is not only an important station, but also a magnificent building, and a tourist attraction in its own right. The wonderfully ornate exterior of Rossio train station was inspired by classical 16th-century Portuguese Manueline architecture, and passengers enter via two horseshoe-shaped archways, while turrets and pinacols line the roof.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Health is located in the Mouraria neighborhood. Built in 1505 by initiative of the artillerymen of the Lisbon garrison, it was dedicated to St. Sebastian, its patron and protector of evils such as war, famine and especially the plague, which had raged in the city and caused hundreds of victims. In 1569, it was dedicated to Our Lady of Health and in 1662 welcomed her image, and became known by that name. It underwent works after being damaged by the earthquake of 1755. However, the portal attributed to João Antunes dates from the beginning of the 18th century. Every year, on the first Sunday of May, the procession of thanksgiving for the protection of the Virgin takes place, a tradition that has been repeated since the 16th century.
Largo de São Domingos is a square popular among Lisbon’s natives and african community that daily gathers here. A monument mural, inaugurated in 2008, reads “Lisbon, City of Tolerance” in 34 languages recalling the terrible episode of 1506 and paying tribute to the Jewish victims. The square has several stores and cafés, and is home of the famous cherry brandy shop A Ginjinha.
The Lisbon Massacre, also known as 1506 Easter Slaughter, began on a Sunday Mass in April when believers were praying for the end of the drought, hunger and plague that ravaged Portugal at the time. One believer claimed to have had a vision of Christ, a miracle as interpreted by other Catholics. When a New Christian tried to explain the “miracle” as light reflection, the crowd wouldn’t want to listen. The New Christian was beaten to death. Thereafter, all Jews in the city were accused of heresy. It was also here that, some years later, those condemned by the Portuguese Inquisition were left waiting to be burned alive at Rossio. A monument mural, inaugurated in 2008, reads “Lisbon, City of Tolerance” in 34 languages recalling the terrible episode of 1506 and paying tribute to the Jewish victims.

Our guide Raquel was absolutely fantastic, she was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. It was great to be guided around local spots and experience the food and drinks, along with learning about all of its historic importance and the connections and culture. We had many questions about the history of Portugal and Lisbon, and she graciously shared her knowledge. It was a relaxed pace and we never felt rushed and we enjoyed a pleasant walk and education along the way. Raquel also gave us some wonderful advice on places to eat and visit on the next part of journey to Évora. We highly recommend this tour, especially at the start of your trip to lean all of the amazing things you may not otherwise find or experience.
> Thank you so much for a fantastic, special and truly unforgettable evening. > We were so fortunate to meet such a wonderful host,Ana , and such an interesting person, with an open heart, incredible knowledge in so many different fields, and a wonderful gift for conversation. > And, of course, the food was extraordinary. Every dish served was of gourmet quality, but what made the meal truly special was the personal touch behind every dish. Each one had its own story, its origins and traditions, and your own unique interpretation. It felt like a little journey through flavours, memories and stories. > We could feel the generosity, warmth and love put into every detail, and above all, genuine joy in welcoming people into Ana's home and sharing with them. > We left not only happy and wonderfully well-fed, but also feeling that we had met a truly special person. We very much believe, that this evening will be the beginning of a friendship and that our paths will cross again. > Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for such a beautiful evening. It is an experience we will remember for a long time. Definitely will recommend to our friends !
This was such an incredible tour. Filipa was a joy to work with planning everything, she adjusted perfectly for our team's needs and shared all of our dietary restrictions with the guide. Our guide Bruno was clever, enigmatic, and incredibly well informed. You could really tell that he has a real love for the city, and a true flair for speaking in front of audiences. The walk was the right pace, not to fast and not too slow, and it brought us through areas we wouldn't have seen otherwise. The bites to eat were the perfect size, starting out small, a larger sit down meal in the middle, and ending with coffee and Portugese pastries. The entire experience was such a treat. Bruno did a great job of bringing us in and out of areas, keeping our group together as we wandered for several hours, and avoiding large crowds. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about Portugal, see the beauty with new eyes, and enjoy delicious food as they go. I can't wait to return and do this solo with a large group. 10/10 experience, I would absolutely recommend this to anyone.
Great tour with Danielle "Dani," native Portuguese, great English, very knowledgeable about the area. Fun, energetic vibe. I was solo and felt extremely comfortable. Had a very good, small group.
Great tour with Ricardo! We enjoyed learning about the history and culture of Lisbon, while trying some authentic cuisine at historical businesses.
The guide was very knowledgable and personable. It was a great experience!
Dinner at a Portuguese local home. We had a wonderful time visiting this lovely couple enjoying Portuguese food and wine.
We had a morning tour with Filipa, one of the best tours we had. Food and cultural information was excellent, at a pace that we all found comfortable, I am happy to recommend Filipa's tour
Our tour guide, Dani, did an excellent job. She guide a tremendous amount of knowledge of Lisbon culture and history along with some fabulous food. I would definitely recommend it.
This was an absolutely amazing experience. I’m Swedish traveling with an US-American and our group was really nice. Daniel , our guide was very knowledgeable, a local who knows the city like his back pocket. He quickly took us away from the touristy places and showed us some of the old less crowded areas of town. With intelligence, humor and a musical sense ( sense for the rhythm of the group ) and a lot of historical knowledge blended with personal stories from his family history I really got everything I could have dreamed of. He made sure everyone felt seen and had a great sense of the social part of it. The taste bites were delicious and I was full and happy after this day. I can highly recommend this experience. Daniel; you’re the best!
We just had a great walking food tour of Lisbon with Ricardo. He served as a great guide to Lisbon‘s food scene, and introduced us to many iconic dishes. Everything was so tasty and authentic, and we love how this tour selects local artisans, many that have been in business for over 100 years, and that we would never be able to find on our own. So much fun learning about the city and the food history, and hanging out with Ricardo, who was kind and friendly and a joy to be around. He even made special adjustments to accommodate one of us who is gluten-free. Highly recommend!
"I highly recommend Danny for his sense of humour and expertise. The tour was well-paced and great fun.
This is a must tour when you go to Lisbon Portugal. Daniela, "Danny" is a great tour guide. She is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. She took is to areas which you would not find on walking around by yourself. This is so you get a chance to experience the real culture of Portugal. The food was great and diverse. We really enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend Danny and Taste of Lisboa
Bruno led us on a very engaging tour through various parts of Lisboa, with historical context for the areas we went to, and for the foods we sampled. Great variety and very fun.
Our guide was full of life and energy. She chatted with us constantly and gave us a history tour along the way. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to take on the hills of Lisbon. A perfect way to see many of the areas—old and new. The tour is so well organized and there is food variety in all the stops along the way… from chicken to shrimp and rice to all the special olive oils and of course the most gorgeous bakery stop (pic attached). We did the tour from 10 to 2 and it was such a unique way to lunch! We were with our two adult children and I think we all had a different fav spot. My husband loved the spicy shrimp at the Indian spot and my son the Portuguese meat sandwich. And of course wine and beer provided as well!
Pedro was an amazing and talented tour guide. He took us to great spots for food and drink. He even sang fado a few times! He was charming and funny and got us off to a great start on our visit to Lisbon. It will always be a great memory for us.
Daniela (Dani ) was very personable, extremely knowledgeable, and had an encyclopaedic understanding of what makes Lisbon tick
Pedro was great! So knowledgeable and relaxed. He has a good sense of humor and kept history entertaining for our young adult kids. We enjoyed his choice of locations and feel like we saw so much more than we could have explored on our own. He also showed us the elevators which made all the difference for navigating Lisboa!
Our guide was great. Smart, friendly, and responsive to our wishes. Best day in Portugal. Ended the day with a better understanding of the diversity in Lisbon.
Be sure to ask for Duart. Really funny and interesting guy. Be sure to do this tour once you get to Lisbon. Bring an empty stomach and be ready to walk.
Pedro was amazing - we loved his commentary on historical sites/areas - very educational mixed in with his delightful sense of humor. He is super funny which made the tour fun for all of us (family of 5). The tastings were also delicious and it was difficult to pick our favorite of the 6 spots. All the dishes/drinks were varied and absolutely delicious. We very much appreciated the different areas that Pedro took us through, exploring true local history and established neighborhoods. We were also serenaded by Pedro who has a beautiful voice, earning applause by someone listening from the apartments above. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and very highly recommend it to all who visit Lisbon.
outstanding tour, great commentary and fun foods The tour group was small, so we had an easy time moving around and hearing the guide.
Our guide Girard was superb in every way: warm and personable and well informed and well spoken, extremely knowledgeable about Lisbon history and culture, a great sense of humor as well. Girard was also very enthusiastic about the various restaurants and bars where we stopped, obviously a foodie who was proud about what Lisbon has to offer, drinks as well, well connected with all the business owners and their history, lot of side stories about Portugal's history as well as its food.
My travel group had an amazing time on our food tour with our host, Daniel. He was knowledgeable, warm, and humorous. I loved that this tour went beyond food and highlighted the people and different cultures within Lisbon. Daniel tied in some family history which was super interesting to learn. I’m vegetarian, and accommodations were made for me in advance at every stop so I always had a meat free alternative to eat. Highly recommend this tour to taste a variety of dishes and see some of the lesser explored areas of Lisbon! Thank you, Daniel 😊
We had a great time, ate a lot of delicious food, and learned a lot about Lisbon food, culture, and history. A great introduction to Lisbon. Show up hungry.
This was an amazing tour! Pedro was incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we had fun, too. The food was so good, definitely a highlight of our trip. I appreciated how thoughtful he was to put together a tour considering both dietary and mobility restrictions in mind. I would recommend doing it early during your stay so you can go back to the places, he also gives lots of recommendations for other places to go.
Pedro did an excellent job with our group, mix of funny, knowledgeable, and personable. Great recommendation list for us of best bets in Lisbon. We are still talking about it days later. Best food tour we have taken, and have been on several occasions n other cities globally. Ask him to sing for you, he has an excellent voice!
With so many food tour companies to choose from, it can be overwhelming trying to decide which one to book. We've been on food tours in lots of different cities. In comparison to other tours, this one did a great job of combining Portuguese history & culture with relevant tastings. Daniela was the perfect guide for our Taste of Lisboa Roots, Food & Culture walk. She clearly loves Lisbon and the locals we encountered along our path clearly love her. Before leaving Lisbon, we re-visited some of our tasting stops for another bite or to buy things to take home. Thanks, Daniela!
Ricardo provided a wonderful tour with cultural knowledge of Lisbon along its delicacies. Food and beverage choices were fantastic!!
The food tour was a definite highlight of our trip! Pedro, our guide was so knowledgeable and took us on a 4 hour guided walking tour through the city. Although it was a multi hour experience, we did not feel tired walking everywhere as the pacing was wonderful and interspersed with tasty bites and drinks of Portugal. Pedro had funny jokes and intimate knowledge of the culture and historical context of Portugal and its food that gave the trip much more meaning! I would do this again in a heartbeat and recommend this for everyone who is interested in learning and eating at the same time.
My wife, three adult daughters and I were booked for a Private group tour with Daniella. Dani was a fantastic guide. She knew so much of the history of Portugal, Lisbon and of course the influences on food and culture. As part of our tour Dani took us to the Moorish part of Lisbon, admittedly an area that we would likely not have ventured to, to sample some truly local restaurants. All in all, Dani took us to 6 places which were as good as they were different. We were the only tourists in all but one of these places and Dani knew so many people as we walked along the streets and alleys. The next day we returned to one of the restaurants to have lunch we enjoyed it so much. I will definitely book with Taste of Lisboa again when we get back to Lisbon!
First time doing a food tour and this one did not disappoint. Dani was the most amazing, informative, enthusiastic guide. The variety of restaurants she took us to surprised in a good way. I hadn't realised that there was alcohol at each stop, but there were alternatives if you didn't feel like alcohol. Highlight was the 300 year old pub, but every restaurant had something yummy to try. And although we didn't have any dietary requirements some on our tour did and were accommodated well. Small group which made it personal. Definitely recommend!!!
Dining with Sophia and her husband was the absolute highlight of our Portugal trip. Their warm hospitality and Sophia's exceptional culinary skills created an unforgettable cultural experience. We were immersed in rich conversation that gave us a deeper understanding and appreciation of Portuguese traditions. I would enthusiastically recommend this intimate dinner to anyone seeking to truly connect with the heart of the country through its people and cuisine. Sophia's talent as a hostess and cook is surpassed only by the genuine care she and her husband have for their guests. This was a truly special evening that elevated our entire vacation.
We had a great experience. Our tour with Pedro gave us an overview of Lisbon’s old town, including some of the more well known, bus also several stops at places that both exhibited the history and breadth of Portuguese food, but also to places we would never have found on our own. Thanks Pedro!
We loved our tour with Daniel. As a native of Lisboa, he had so much information to share. His perspective and background gave us a deeper understanding of Lisbon. The food stops were top notch and we had a wonderful sampling of the combination of Portuguese and foreign cuisines that Lisbon has to offer. The Mouraria neighborhood and the Fado culture that he took us through and shared with us added an unexpected dimension to our time together. Can recommend without reservation.
Daniel made our Taste of Lisbon Food Tour one of the highlights of our 10 day vacation in Portugal. Daniel arrived 10 minutes early, and walked us to our first location after meeting at the hotel lobby we were staying at. He quickly outlined the Tour stops with a map of 3ach location, what would be served, and some history and culture regarding each food and visit. In summary, Daniel was knowledgeable, funny, and managed our time at each location with a balance of enjoying, yet, not getting off track on the time of our overall tour. Could not have asked for a better experience and I highly recommend for any tourist to spend the money to experience this wonderful tour.
We were a group of 5 with 3 adults and 2 x 12 year old children. We went on the tour in the afternoon from 3 pm. There were overall 9 in the group in total which was a good manageable number. The tour itself was well organised. We met our guide Dani and she gave us a good introduction as to what we could expect and what would be doing and where we would be going. There were about 6 stops on the tour itself which lasted about 3 hours. The star of the event however was our guide Dani !!! ;-) She had great enthusiasm for her city , its history and also the food and drink which we sampled. In addition she really involved all the group in her talks and kept us on our toes with interesting fun facts and assorted questions. Why only salted cod ? Origins of the drink of port. Stories around the cobblestones and more... What was great , was that we got a great intro to the city and good recommendations from a local which meant that in following days we could could follow up and know that we were going to spending valuable days at quality local places.... I would recommend the tour to anyone and therefore encourage you to do it early in your stay... Thanks ! and hope to see you again next time. John Kate Zoe Todd and Romy
Pedro did a wonderful job of sharing Lisbon with our group! He was very informed and we learned so much! The food and drinks we sampled were so good and the perfect amount of flavors ! I highly recommend going on his Food & Cultural Walk tour!!
We did this tour with Dani. She was absolutely incredible and this tour was the highlight of our trip to Portugal. She was fun, knowledgeable, and made this trip absolutely incredible. We enjoyed it so much and would so recommend this tour with her.
Great variety of food places, appetizers, soup, tapas, port tasting, dessert, coffees- different venues, lots of walking and good Lisbon history
Our tour was fabulous! Pedro was a great guide: knowledgeable, courteous, and humorous. The vendors we visited were interesting, and the food was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Pedro. Thanks!
Lisbon or Lisboa (Lish-bow-aa) is a friendly and distinctly European town. The Taste of Lisboa run by Phillipa and her team captures its culinary history along with how it was enriched with sea voyages to foster trade from South Africa, India, Madagascar, Timor among others. Ricardo our guide was fluent in English and was very memorable. The tour began with a sampling of Romeo and Juliet (cheese + Quince fruit leather) and a sample of Port wine. It winds through Portuguese food staples, along with an intro to the rich history of Fado music. My favorite part of Lisboa was the love and care imparted to the elderly in the middle of the Fado districts. Ricardo our guide spontaneously stopped and helped an elderly handicapped person down the stairs (see pic). This simple act of spontaneous kindness reflects the very spirit of Lisboa…take the tour ….enjoy the neighborhoods, wear comfortable shoes, and sample the taste of Lisboa. A tour company with ‘Heart’.
What an amazing adventure! There were 6 in our group. Our guide was Pedro. He walked us 6 great locations for food and/or drink. A couple we off the beaten path, local favorites, or historical importance. Pedro, being from Lisbon, was very knowledgeable of the restaurants and the city. While he walked us from restaurant to restaurant, we passed a lot of local art that he would elaborate on with stories and references. From fado, to murals, to local characters, Pedro expanded on these with detail and passion. At one point, we were all singing fado in the street together. This was definitely my favorite tour I was on while in Lisbon. I cannot vouch for anyone but Pedro. He was very charismatic, animated, and came off as very genuine. His knowledge of his city is only matched by his passion and love for it. Thank you Pedro. And thank you Taste of Lisbon.
This was the best food tour we’ve been on! Pedro was amazing—knowledgeable, engaging, and funny! Each stop was filled with interesting information and yummy food. All of the drink options were excellent as well. He made sure to accommodate our vegetarian in the group too!
Daniel was a wonderful guide - my niece and I loved the food tour and gained a new appreciation for Lisbon food/culture/history. Big thanks to Daniel! He was the best!
had an excellent time in Lisbon. This eating tour was great. Fred was a great tour host. We visited lots of interesting places. Experiences great food, great wine and had a very fun time
Pedro was amazing! Explaining everything and giving lots of history background, was giving us a lot of advices about Lisbon
It was really amazing. A perfect combination between history, localism, tradition and ... FOOD! The wonderful portuguese tipycal food. 5 stars! 👌
This was an incredible experience. It was a great introduction to Lisbon-the food, history and culture. Dani was an amazing guide, sharing her love of the local food and drink as well as her knowledge of the city’s history. We were introduced to food we may not have tried and now we know what to eat and where. I highly recommend this tour-well worth it. Ask for Dani!
