Itinerary
Discover how authentic Portuguese pastéis de nata are made during a hands-on cooking class in Lisbon. With guidance from your host, you’ll learn every stage of the recipe—from preparing and laminating the puff pastry to making the custard, shaping the tarts and achieving their signature caramelised finish. As traditional puff pastry requires several resting periods, you’ll shape your pastéis using dough prepared in advance while learning how to complete the entire process at home. You’ll also prepare a second traditional Portuguese recipe, which may be sweet or savoury and varies between sessions. At the end, sit down together and enjoy both creations with tea. You’ll leave with the recipes and the skills to recreate a taste of Portugal at home.

Enjoyed Anna and Marta’s clear explanations - both desserts were delicious - will definitely try making them at home.
The best cooking class I have ever done!
It was great and delicious! We got to make two desserts which was lovely. It was a little fast paced and it would have been five stars if the experience had been even half an hour longer :)
We went as a group of 6 and had the best time! We were shown how to make Pastel de Natas from scratch as well as another traditional portuguese dessert. Really good fun and we all got to eat all of it at the end!
Excellent experience we really enjoyed it. Very knowledgeable team who explained things very well and made it fun. Just the right length of time.
Informative and fun, we loved this hands-on, two-hour cooking experience where we learned about both the history and step by step technique in making not only Pastel de Nata, but also Farofias. Everything was so well thought out and paced, and the desserts were absolutely delicious. We also enjoyed the clean and bright cooking school environment. Great facility and small group setting. Anna and Marta were wonderful, expert instructors. Again, pace of class was perfect for mixed ages (our group included ages 11 and 15). Fun to sit for a few minutes and enjoy eating our desserts at the very end!
A really fun couple of hours learning how to make traditional Pastil de nanda. Much more complicated than I expected but Anna and Marta made it very easy for us.
The cooking school was a little hard to find, but once we did, it was SO wonderful. The kitchen is set up very professionally and the staff (Thank you Anna and Marta) were patient, informative and very fun. The class was cooking Pastel de Nata, and was so wonderful. The staff gave us comprehensive lessons and made us feel very welcome in their kitchen. They made the recipe very easy to follow and gave us other ones as a bonus It was delightful cooking with others from around the world. Such a fun way to experience the culture of Portuguese food.
We had a wonderful experience at our nata cooking class! Anna and Marta were friendly and welcoming. They gave us special tips for cooking nata at home. The school is clearly very well run and organized. The nata and bonus dessert we made were delicious! It is a wonderful way to spend 2 hours in Lisbon! Highly recommend!!
We spent a lovely two hours learning to make Pasteis de Nata and more at the school - it was well organised, fun and a great experience.
we had a ton of fun baking and learning about the culture behind the pastel de nata, as well as all the tips anna provided to help us. definitely recommend!
It was a great experience and if you go during the off season like we did, there’s a good chance your class will be super small! We had a very intimate experience that made it informative, fun, and easy to follow :)
Nice way to spend a morning in Lisbon. The Compadre cooking school is very well organised. The 3 ladies kept us busy the whole time be it making the cake of listening to the local stories. would definitely recommend to anyone staying in Lisbon.
A really relaxed atmosphere with basic cooking instructions delivered in a very friendly manner by all staff. An excellent course, great for couples, or single travellers.
The kitchen was absolutely spotless, the staff were warm and friendly and the class itself was excellent. Our teacher, sorry have forgotten her name did a great job, keeping us all engaged and ensuring our cooking results were fabulous!
I would 10/10 recommend this course. It was explained very well and it improved my skills of making desserts a lot! They also explain the history behind famous Portuguese foods which is interesting to learn about. At the end we got to try the food and it was amazingggg! I went solo to this cooking course, however I made friends and found others who were also travelling solo, so it was a fun experience.
Loved this! We had a fun family activity learning to make our favorite dessert as well as the history and origins of it. Our chef was very detailed and we even made a secondary traditional dessert. Our teen daughters loved it and it was quite the highlight! Obrigada!
Amazing class and so much fun, you learn a lot of history about Portugal as well! Amazing girls teaching the class too, my friend and I did this right off the plane
The class was well organized and everyone got to do some hands on stuff. The two instructors were nice and patient. They move along pretty fast. You make pastel de natas and floating islands and get to eat them before you leave with their recipes.
First, I think the class would benefit from a written recipe, to go over before starting in the kitchen and to take home. The students did not need 25 recipes to download themselves, I found it distracting as kitchen helpers were putting dishes and utensils away while the students were trying to listen to instructions. I was very surprised that the kitchen scale was not used for all measurements, I expect a more professional lesson. I am giving this class a 3 stars.
I had a fantastic experience baking the pasteis de nata. Our hosts made it fun and enjoyable and also we had the chance to prepare another sweet and understand better the Portuguese food culture! definitely recommended
Anna and Marta did fabulous team teaching for a group of seven students wanting to learn the intricacies of making Pastel de Nata. They were well organized, personable and committed to ensuring the success of our endeavors as we made not only Pasteis de Nata but also “floating islands”. And even as a long time baker, I am happy to have learned several new “bench skills”.
Expected the experience to be hands on but spent a lot of time listening on how to make the pastry. Got to make the filling but even then the lemon rind was peeled ready. Did make 8 pastel de nata per couple to eat or take away but didn't find it as much fun as other cookery classes been on.
Omg! One of the best things to do in Lisbon! Absolutely enjoyed the atmosphere and Marta was so cute (her handmade earrings was even cuter)! Anna and Angela were also so nice and very welcoming. I loved that they gave us the full history about nata. Very enjoyable.
Lovely instructors and great cooking facilities. Fun, happy experience and deliciously fabulous pastries. Well organized, too.
Fun, family experience learning how to make egg tarts. The time passed quickly and the chefs were skilled educators. Anna and Marta gave a nice history of sweet treats in Portugal.
Staff were lovely, gave history behind the dish and taught us how to make another dish as well so we weren’t waiting in between parts we couldn’t do anything. The recipe was delicious especially the puff pastry outside that made the pastel de nata. Would definitely recomend to anyone debating it.
We had a fantastic cooking session with Anna. It was lots of fun, we learnt loads, and loved the delicious results. Would highly recommend.
This was a fun thing to do during my solo trip. The location is in a cute neighborhood and the kitchen has everything you'll need (including bathrooms and a small locker for your personal items). We made pastel de nata and bacalhau fritters. I liked that we got a little history lesson in addition to the cooking lesson. I would definitely recommend this to others looking to do something different during their trip.

It was so fun, yummy, a great start to our holiday in Lisbon. The instructors were friendly and gave us great cultural information. It was also fun to meet other travellers.
The hosts were knowledgeable and entertaining, with lots of history alongside the helpful cooking tips, and hosted the class in a great space. And there was lots to eat at the end of the class!
I was expecting to participate in a cooking class. There were 11 participants. The classroom had enough work stations if we worked as couples. Unfortunately they only had 4 stations set up. I'm guessing that's because they only had 2 instructors. We ended up watching more than doing as everyone had to have a turn at doing at least one thing. I was expecting more hands on and didn't get it.
We came after a recommendation from a friend to attend a cooking class abroad. Great value for money, as we anticipated only cooking the pastel de nata, but we also made traditional cod fish fitters, which were very tasty. The people and instructors were very friendly. We particularly enjoyed how the lesson linked to the history of the dishes, and gave some insight into Portuguese cooking techniques. The pastel de natas were the best we had on the holiday, and we indulged in several! The fish fitters were also very delicious and we left reasonably well fed. Would have maybe liked it to be a bit more hands on, however this in no way took away from our enjoyment of the experience, and was understandable within the two hour time frame. The equipment provided was professional and the environment was conducive to the number of people that attended. Would highly recommend a cooking class when away, as it greatly increases your understanding of the local culture and cuisine.
Beautiful place and girls who work there were just wonderful! So helpful, polite and nice! Great experience!
A very fun cooking class. Ana and Marta were excellent instructors and gave us a lot of helpful information, tips, and historical and cultural background. We made cod fritters in addition to the pastel de Nata, both of which were delicious. Not sure that I can undertake the task of making the pastry dough in the future (a multi step process of maybe 15 hours) but it was fun to learn how these delicious treats are made. We are still enjoying our creations a couple of days later! Take this class, you won’t regret it!!
This is an absolute must do if you’re in Lisbon! The teachers were so friendly and helpful and they were more than happy to make changes/accommodations for dietary requirements. We ended up getting to make two different recipes and also learnt a lot about the history and modern culture of Portuguese food. Thank you Compadre Cooking School for an awesome experience!
We had a great time. Instructors Anna and Marta very fun and helpful, and the food we made was very tasty. It's was a quick and easy cooking class, good for kids and beginners.
Wonderful small group cooking class. We made one savoury dish. Cod fritters, and then the most glorious Pastel De nata's that we ate fresh from the oven. A wonderful experience to enjoy with friends.
The instructors were knowledgeable, friendly, and energetic. Learning to make pastel de nata was what we signed up for, but it was such a treat to have the added bonus of making cod fritters. The facility was clean and very professional looking, and we had a great time!
This is a really great activity for families, even my teenager enjoyed it! The venue was lovely and modern and was easy to find. There is lots of interesting information about the history of Portuguese food. It’s a hands on class, although the process to make pastry is really slow in real life so we just had a quick demonstration of the process then we used pastry the staff made earlier. There is a communal table to eat and enjoy your food at the end of the class. There are 2 people at a workstation, so if you’re going alone (or have an odd number in your group) you might be paired with someone else, which we enjoyed.
We all had an amazing time, took my two nieces, daughter and sister. They haven't stopped talking about it since. We were so well looked after and entertained and very pleased with what we made!
It was an awesome cooking experience that i highly recommend. We cooked cod ( of couse ) and the famous Pastel De Nata
The location was well setup and easy to get to by transit. Our instructor was patient and entertaining. Our finished pastel de nata were some of the tastiest we had on our trip to Portugal.
The space is professionally set-up and well laid out, but not well prepared. Found the lesson rushed, puff pastry demo was also very quick. Not at all what I expected from the afternoon.
Fabulous cookery course- hands on and informative- felt very authentic. Good for foodies and budding chefs. Great demonstration by friendly professional staff. Highly recommended for a special moment in Beautiful Lisboa.
This is a fun way to learn about Portuguese culture. The lessons accommodate many ages so it’s a perfect activity to do as a family.
We had a great time and got to make two traditional Portuguese dishes. The lesson ran a little too fast (perhaps because we were making a savory AND a sweet treat) but other than that it was really great!
We had a wonderful time! Anna was great and everything was so delicious. Would definitely recommend!!
