Great food. Nice wine. Friendly service. Beautiful music. Everything was nice and organized. Yes it's a tight room, intimate but everything was ok

Reviews
Traveling with my Mom and two young kids and this was great. 3 food courses with wine pairings. We had an amazing personal and intimate dinner with Fado signing in between courses. Wait staff was top notch and singing was gorgeous.
Everyone should see a Fado show when visiting Portugal! Interesting experience. The only issue we had was that it was difficult to see the performers and to hear them.
It was a nice location and the food was great. You got a choice in food so don’t be afraid of a set menu. They were very generous with the wine too. The music was fantastic.
Very atmospheric , small restaurant. Food was great, and so was the service. The musicians and singer were all excellent. The small place allowed her to sing with no microphone and we were so close to the musicians you could watch their fingers and picks.
Very cramped space and everyone ordered and received their food at different times. We had a 9:30 reservation but were not welcomed inside until 9:45z The appetizers were barely warm and the green beans were surrounded by mushy dough, almost as if they’d been reheated. We had chicken for our main entree which was fine, but the fish finger appetizer made my daughter and I sick. The music was lovely but the food was underwhelming and the worst meal we had while in Lisbon. Way overpriced from our experience.
Even though this wasn't a long walk by distance it was still challenging due to the hills along the way. It would be best to get some type of transportation to get as close the restaurant as possible. The FADO show was excellant. The food was average at best. Still a nice event in a very intimate environment.
Terrible experience!!! The music was wonderful!! honestly, that was the best part of the evening. But the dinner was extremely disappointing, and I still don’t understand why we were treated this way. We were seated on one side of the room. Four people to our left received their dinner, and six people to our right received theirs. We waited for about 10 minutes, thinking perhaps our food needed a little more time, especially the meat. But the exact same thing happened with dessert. Everyone around us had already finished eating, and only then was our dessert brought to us. I almost never complain in restaurants, but this was genuinely upsetting. It was uncomfortable and embarrassing to sit next to people eating their entire meal while we waited, and then have to eat after everyone else was finished. The fado music is beautiful, but you can find fado music in many places. You don’t need to put yourself through this kind of treatment to experience it.
Entertainment was very good but the food fair Ok but seemed oriented to the average crowd Lucky we sat next to a couple from Brazil .
Great experience overall! We arrived a little early and were uncertain if we were in the right place (they don’t let you in until the start time and the tables/seats out front were pretty worn down so we were worried). Once inside, the setting was beautiful, quaint, and enjoyable. You have a choice of entrees and dessert (which was helpful). The music was interwoven between meal courses and the performers were fantastic! We started at 6:30 and finished around 8pm. Very nice thing to do in Lisbon!
The food was tasty, lots of wines to choose from, and we had a good taste of the Fado entertainment. The singers and guitarists were excellent.
Beautiful atmosphere, good food, and first-rate musicians. Add great service and that equals Avery memorable experience.
I was traveling with my 88 year-old dad and did the 6:30 seating. It is everything that I could’ve imagined it to be. The food was delicious, and as I looked around the room everyone cleaned their plates, so they must’ve felt the same way. There were several entrée and dessert choices. The music/singing was outstanding. The singers sang with such passion it brought a tear to my eye. The venue was authentic with amazing , the tables were set beautifully, the wait staff was attentive, and the attention to detail was spot on. We sat on the main level, which I would recommend. There is an upper level with some balcony seating, which would be nice to be sitting at, but otherwise not sure how seating is up there. We took a Uber that dropped us off at the end of the road from the restaurant which was just a short walk to the restaurant. I had to ask for a little bit of help from a local as it’s hard to understand all the restaurant names I did not want to miss the restaurant. The restaurant sits up on a cobblestone hill right off the road with outside tables and umbrellas. The name of the restaurant is posted above the door. They had us wait outside until 630 and then let us in as a group. The weather was perfect to be outside and wait. After dinner, the restaurant called a taxi for us and they picked us up right at the doors - perfect. I highly recommend, you won’t be disappointed.
Good experience but NOT exactly what was in description in Viator. Place was very cramped and no air circulation.
Nice food, great performance, not a proper air conditioning, hard to breathe due to the number of people, weak AC and no fresh air
Beautiful venue but very warm with no A/C. The food and ambiance make the experience very worthwhile and the Fado singers were terrific. The wine tasting was a very nice touch! We enjoyed it!!
The food was good and the fado singers were excellent! The portions were a little small but I was well fed and well served. My only complaint is the venue was very difficult to find and the venue has no AC so dress light. I also recommend leaving yourself time in the morning after as the show runs late into the night and is well worth staying for.
The food was really delicious! I thought it was a prefixed menu, but we had the opportunity to chose our main entree and dessert. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed everything we had! The waiters were super friendly and never let our glasses run dry! We had so much wine, beer and water!!! The singers were outstanding! I am a musician and singer. Trust me: these performers were great! I can’t recommend this experience any higher! You will love it!
I will be in Lisbon July 29th. While trying to book one person for the Mesa de Frades dinner show on July 29th I accidentally booked 2 adults for June 28 dinner show. I immediately contacted Viator customer service that this was an error and I wasn’t even in Spain until end of July. No assistance from customer service. I also messaged the local tour operator and did not receive a response. Please refund my money (~150€). Thank you.
Surprisingly good food accompanied by wonderful music. The fish was excellent. The view from the upper level was prime.
This was a great experience! The fado show was spectacular, and the food and service were exceptional!
Must go evening. !! Suggestion: go to the Fado Museum 1st, have a wine in the Alfama area and then go to the 9:30 dinner
Tourist trap. This place is a scam stay away,
It is important to know you are in a small space and it is very important to be quiet while the artists are performing. We were 6 people, 4 adults and 2 children ages 6 and 3. The children were amazingly quiet the entire performance however some adults did get shushed. There were also good options for dinner and the food was very good.
Great food, phenomenal acoustics in the building and fantastic service. Fado experience to remember ❤️
Great atmosphere! We had very good seats in the upper floor. Food and wine was very good. Service and music was very good.
Delightful evening.. my husband and I met a wonderful couple and enjoyed a delicious and flavorful meal and well paced Fado show… Wonderful way to end the evening in Lisbon!
Enjoyed the music. Would have appreciated some translation/commentary. Food mediocre. VERY CROWDED.
Fanatastic performances. Good food and drink. Beautiful setting. Lovely acoustics. Tiles surround you.
It was an amazing experience the 3 course meal was fantastic..staff was polite and friendly amd the fado show was great..service was fantasfic I recommend this restaurant
Everything was 5 stars except for the rude patrons who made noise and took pictures during the performance.
We sat down and started eating, waiting for the show. I hear this voice warming up in the back, and it immediately grabbed my attention. "Who is that!?" When the warm up grabs your attention, you know something special is about to happen. Her voice fills the room. Her voice does some amazing things, and they seem so effortless. Very impressive.
Food and drinks were sub par! The music was good. Multiple sets of musicians played and we got a good flavor of Fado!
Wonderful singing, great ambience. Food was nice.
WOW, WOW and ... WOW. ! this was such a wonderfully romantic and intimate event. A real surprise. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a truly authentic Portuguese experience.
At the Fado dinner, the singer had a wonderful voice, the food was very good, and service was accommodating.
Venue is small but beautiful with great acoustics and atmosphere.. Music great and food fantastic. Staff really friendly and helpful
Had high hopes going into this Fado experience due to a recommendation from a local. Nonetheless , our family was quite disappointed especially since we had gone to a far superior Fado experience the night before in Alfama. The musicians were excellent and were exuding with talent. Just wish they introduced themselves and interacted with the audience better. However, what truly needs to be improved is the service and food quality. We only wished it could have matched the musical performance. We had a 9:30pm showing and it seemed like the staff didn’t want to be there. They were not friendly, handed our silverware in such a hastily manner. We had no choice with desserts, even though the menu had several options. We had 3 people ordering the beef at our table and they were all well done despite them asking for our steak preference. Appetizers were fried greens beans which came out saggy and cold. All in all, it was one of THE WORST dining experiences. So not worth the price! Do yourself a favor and find another Fado experience. Plenty of better ones out there!
Highly recommend! A very special treat to hear and see beautiful Fado singers and musicians up close, with the stone walls, candelight and large oak doors giving you a feeling of going back in time. The staff and owners of Mesa de Frades were kind and gracious. The food was good. Loved the chocolate mousse for dessert.
Nice place, friendly staffs and good show, specially male singer who had the great voice… we enjoyed a lot and i recommend this tour to anyone who loves music… just suggest that try to take ground floor table not upstairs to see the show clearly…
Wonderful intimate venue that served authentic Portuguese dishes. You were given choice of main dish and dessert. The wine was included in our package. Food was very good. Quite a bit of food, in fact. The guitarists were excellent. We were treated to both a female and male Fado singer. Strong soulful singing. Well worth it!
The room is very small and every spot is used. The food and atmosphere were terrific and the staff super friendly. The musicians came on 4 different times, playing 2-3 songs at a time. The room used to be a chapel and the acoustics are amazing and the musicians very talented. We had a great time and would highly recommend this to family and friends.
Great food, atmosphere & the Fado music was wonderful. It's a bit of a hike up hill & through narrow streets so recommend Uber or taxi to drop off near address.
Everything was “fine,” but everyone—waiters, musicians, and apparently the chef as well—were clearly just “going through the motions,”…highly ironic when Fado is all about passion and soul. $80pp? With 10 Fado houses on every block in Alfama these days, my personal recommendation would be pick somewhere else.
Wonderful experience! Great seafood, the fish dishes were excellent. Bottomless Portuguese wine! And a great Fado show with excellent singing and guitarists! Definitely recommend to all. Keep in mind that it’s a diner plus show, so they are not rushing to get the food out for each course. The timing was great for my wife and I, since we were soaking in the experience and having a great night out!
We hadn't finished the meal yet and they were already setting the bill for us to send away! I do not recommend.
We booked the evening before, although everything should have been busy, so we should have thought about it already. The reception on site was OK and we were politely referred to our table. The staff, however, seemed confused and it did not seem like there was much control in connection with the evening, which we, as a couple had paid 160 EUR for. It was difficult to see who among the staff had the main responsibility for the event. With a confused hustle, we were given a menu card from which we had to order quickly. The food came quite accidentally into a stressed environment. Some of the staff went around confused while others had time to check their cell phone. The room was very hot, so water needed to be added. The water from the caraffle was lush and tasted clearly chlorine. No wonder the staff drank bottled water. The business was standard, bread and olives and the main dish as well. Cold soft potato boats while the meat was wet and good! - but in a strange gum-like sauce. Along the way there came a couple of Fado elements, which were a bit unengaged. We had paid 20 EUR extra for a selection of Portuguese wines to choose from. The result was a Moscato for start and a glass of port wine, but a selection of different wines was not possible - I asked three different waiters. White wine came from karafe or when we insisted from a bottle, but the red wine was only in one version - of questionable quality from karafe . I finally got a reply from the waiter that I could get a beer instead. The dessert set a point on a gastronomic low. Both we and the guests at the neighboring table were pointless about both the visual and taste quality - many did not eat it at all. The final part of the Fado show, where the artist was changed, raised the quality and engagement to the level we expected. The show stopped approximately 30 minutes early without any explanation or the slightest hostess from the organizer. Our recommendation is: Stay away! It's not worth the money at all. These are beautiful and atmospheric rooms, which were also acoustically challenging, as it was very difficult to communicate with each other. A highlight was the good company with the other guests, who were in the same situation with poor food and service and with a Fado without much commitment and unprofessional service.
The visit was worth it: Good food in a nice ambience, friendly and fast service and fado with soul and heart.
Incredible atmosphere, music that transports us, exceptional food and very attentive staff! We loved our experience!
