A lot of walking and not much historical information. Poor tour guide had to keep adjusting her talks fur to all the noise around us.
Excellent experience! Victoria told a wonderful history of Portugal and we learned a lot about the back story to the locations. She was lively and respectful to the group.
We've done tours like this in other cities. This one was just light on solid information and contradicted information from a tour we'd taken the day before. Doing some research, the info we'd already received was more accurate. Nice walk.
Historical walking tour revolving around dark aspects of Lisbon's past. Our guide, Victoria, was an excellent presenter who made the subject very interesting and enjoybable despite the dark tone. This isn't a ghost tour, but an historical tour with dark themes.
A very enjoyable evening hearing about Lisbons history. Our tour guide was very enthusiastic and well prepared to share many interesting stories with us. Definitely enjoyed this tour
Lots of information great storyteller keeps you drawn in! A lot of walking make sure you have comfortable sneakers! We walked a few miles up hills, but it was nice after we were able to hang out around the area and we got gelato and french fries nearby as we walked back to our hotel!
Maria our guide was great, excellent knowledge and insight into Lisbon’s dark past, the only thing I would say is bring a jacket as the stops and information given go on for a long time
What an incredible way to get to know Lisbon and its history! We had a great time learning and exploring the cool stuff!
A lovely way to learn more about Lisbon and its history. The walking was spread out so it wasn't tiring. Our guide Maria was very knowledgeable and brought the history to life.
Maria was an amazing guide and story teller. She was so passionate, knowledgeable, and animated. It was a joy to walk the streets of Lisbon with her. She managed a larger group well and paced the stories well too. It was a great mix of history and culture. We would go on another walk led by Maria any day!
The customer service at Shadowing Tours was great; I reached out to see if we could reschedule due to the Portugal v Spain World Cup game, and Beatriz contacted me right away to work out the new time and date. She was quick, very accommodating, and gave me all of the information I needed for our reschedule, which was so appreciated. Our tour guide, Victoria, was fun, knowledgable, and had a great sense of humor. The 1.5 hours flew by and we got to see parts of the city that I hadn't been able to see before. The length of the tour and the content that was delivered was worth more than the price of admission. After the tour ended, we caught up with Victoria to ask about a restaurant recommendation and she walked us to a place that had the best grilled sardines and mussels that any of us had ever had, so big thanks to her for that!
This was a fascinating and highly enjoyable evening tour that took us to several landmarks in the historic centre of Lisbon that were significant in the dark history of Portugal that dealt with the inquisition. This notorious episode in history is most often associated with Spain but Portugal also had its share of horrific events and personalities related to the inquisition. Our tour guide Andreia provided a compelling account of the tragic and gruesome implications of the inquisition as it relates to Portugal and more specifically Lisbon. Her stories were captivating and her English skills impeccable. She displayed an immense passion for the subject matter that made this tour all the more memorable. I highly recommend this tour to those that enjoy an atmospheric experience pertaining to this dark chapter in Portuguese history.
Fantastic people who love the real brutal history. The guide maria had a wealth of knowledge and was very theatrical and passionate about teaching. I loved it.
We learned a lot and the guide delivered perfectly as expected. :) a smaller tour with a different topic exactly what we wanted.
This tour was a very interesting dive into some of the darker history of Lisbon (and Portugal) - quite a contrast to the modern, bustling city today. Our guide, Victoria, is a fantastic storyteller, full of anecdotes told in animated ways that make this tour so interesting and fun! A must for anyone looking to delve deeper into the history of this vibrant and beautiful city!
Victoria was very knowledgeable and engaging on this tour. I would recommend this walking tour to anyone visiting Lisbon who is interested in history, including the dark side of history.
We really loved the tour. It was a good bit of walking but nothing too hard or crazy. We loved the smaller group size and our guide really made the tour more personable. We really enjoyed it and learned a lot.
I took the “Lisbon: The Dark Unholy Secrets” walking tour today and it was one of the highlights of my time in Lisbon so far — and Clara is the reason why. Her knowledge of the Portuguese Inquisition and Lisbon’s darker history is impressive, and she has a simple gift for storytelling. She brought these centuries-old events to life in a way that was genuinely gripping. I felt like I understood a whole side of this city that most people never glimpse. What really set Clara apart, though, was her kindness and patience. I arrived late and had real difficulty locating the group — it took nearly half an hour until I finally found them. Clara stayed in communication with me the entire time, calm and gracious, she never made me feel like a burden. She simply kept working with me until I was where I needed to be. That kind of care for a guest is rare, and I deeply appreciated it. If you have any interest in history, mystery, or the hidden soul of Lisbon, book this tour — and hope you get Clara as your guide.
The guide Andreia is worth the price of admission by herself. She is a great storyteller, very charismatic and she came across as a genuinely nice human being. Thanks for all the patience with Morgana!
Fun and different. Interesting macabe view of Lisboa.
Wow! I didn’t fully realize what the subject matter was and totally loved the tour. The quality of the tour was all due to Beatriz. She had this wonderful energy, so vibrant and intelligent. We were just us two and her and yet the energy and spark was fantastic and invigorating. She went with the flow and in one amazing moment, a group of partiers was passing us by with loud music and she was able to weave that into her storytelling at that time. I was so impressed. I’m not good at history but she made it come alive in modern language which made it so relatable. I loved her energy so much. It makes a big difference when the tour guide is passionate about the subject matter. We wish her well—what an amazing person.
Maria was wonderful, she brought us the past of Lisbon in a very real way. I felt chills in some parts thinking and feeling how it would have been. Her way of telling us the history/stories was pretty amazing. Absolutely recommended!
I am not exactly fond of spooky stories, but our host Maria did an excellent job of weaving stories to create a vivid image of Lisbon's past and present. You could sense both her love for the city and passion for the history. I did few more tours after this, but, if you only had time for 1 tour to understand Lisbon, pick this 1.
Amazing tour, operator did everything so the tour will happen on booked day. We had a good time, very informative excursion
A very nice evening strolling around Lisbon learning about not very nice things
This tour was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Andreia was so on point, she never stumbled or missed a detail. The script brought everything together so wonderfully, I didn't even have questions. Normally I have tons! I had never even heard of the Portuguese Inquisition, but this has ignited a new special interest. As a sidenote: Most of the tour is flat, but there's a little bit of uphill toward the end. Nothing bonkers, though. For Lisbon, this is about as flat a tour as you can get.
Good stories and great atmosphere from our guide! Small group made the experience feel intimate and fun. Would recommend.
Clara was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The tour itself is a great compliment to the Lisbon’s history. Definitely recommend to anyone who wants to deepen their connection to the city.
This was so interesting - all about the Portuguese inquisition. Some is a bit grisly, some shocking, some sad, some surprising- all fascinating. Well worth it. The guide was interesting and friendly. We enjoyed her company as well as her stories.
Loved this tour, one of my highlights for the trip as I love the format of the history discussed and I find it's good to do on your first night in the city to familiarise yourself with the area. Andreia was so animated, fun, passionate, and most of all knowledgeable. The history of Lisbon and the areas we went to were so interesting and you take for granted all that happened on a space you just walk by casually. My only spot for improvement is throw in a couple of actual ghost stories here and there. It's more of a morbid history as opposed to spooky. Andreia even gave us recommendations on the route and also answered some curve ball questions about the history and politics of Lisbon not included in the tour. Loved it and highly recommend!
A really enjoyable dark tour of the city, rich in Portuguese history and a great way to explore the city's darker elements. Our guide Maria was knowledgeable, witty and engaging. A different way to walk around Lisbon and discover some of its secrets! Obrigada ☺️
Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. It was more of a history tour than a ghost tour. Discussed the inquisition in Portugal and took us to relevant places related to the inquisition.
Amanda was great! Guiding us through the main squares to the old neighborhoods with a lot of insightful and chilling history stories!
It was amazing!!! Andreia was fun and knowledgeable, and everything and more I expect from this kind of tour. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information and history I learned on this tour. I sent them a message the day of and wanted to pay cash and Beatriz fit me into the tour and coordinated with Andreia for me all last minute while being super nice and accomodating! Lovely experience all around!
Amanda Was great. Very knowledgeable and never knew that there was a Portuguese inquisition Learned a lot of their dark history
I am so grateful a friend recommended this tour. This is a history tour with a focus on the inquisition. These are the stories they don’t tell you at any tourist office or in any lightweight guidebook. Amanda did an excellent job setting the scene and telling us the tales at each of the sites. I’ll be looking for similar tours in Barcelona, Madrid, and the other cities we plan to visit.
It was great information and I learned so much being on this trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable on the areas that she was discussing.
Lovely walking tour about the Portuguese Inquisition! Amanda was extremely knowledgeable and told the stories very well. We learned so much.
I received a private Tour since no one else had signed up. It was wonderful and very informative. It's definitely a lot of walking at a fast pace and with lots of hills, so not for the faint of heart. Absolutely recommend it!
The Dark Unholy Sevrets tour was amazing!! Our tour guide Amanda was extremely knowledgeable about the history. She was able to answer our questions beyond just telling the stories at each location. She was friendly and very mindful of where we were going and when speaking. She really made the tour as great as it was. The pictures she brought helped you envision what it was like back then and to tell the story. It is a lot of walking but my husband and I love walking to it was perfect for us. I highly recommend it. I learned so much about Portugal that I did not know. This tour is worth every penny and more!
This was a very interesting tour about the dark history of Lisbon. The guide was friendly and had a lot of knowledge. Between the stops she was also very pleasant to talk to.
Was great to learn about the history of Lisbon, and the Inquisition. Our guide was a wonderful storyteller, and even the kids enjoyed it. Its a lot of uphill walking, so be prepared!!
We loved Amanda! She was great and thorough with the information! She patiently waited for us as we were running late. I definitely recommend to take this tour with her.
My husband and I enjoyed learning about the Portuguese Inquisition and the history of Lisbon. Our guide Amanda was very knowledgeable. This is a fast-paced tour covering many sites in Lisbon finalized at the castle. It is important that those taking the tour are able to climb steep hills and stairs.
This was a very informative and entertaining tour of historic Lisbon! Amanda was a great guide and brought amazing energy to the subject matter. I booked this tour kind of last minute and I'm really happy that I did! It was a fun evening walking around and I learned a lot.
Andreia was an amazing storyteller! Before her tour I came across so many buildings and historic sites that I had no idea of its dark past. 10/10 recommend
Andrea is knowledgeable and amazing! Lot's of dark history, haunted stories and just good storytelling. Couldn't recommend more!
We had a fantastic tour with Andreia. This was the perfect activity to do on our first night in Lisbon.
We booked this tour for last weekend in Lisbon. Unfortunately, the small print indicated it was in Spanish only, even though the full description was in English. We arrived and the guide, who was friendly, said he couldn’t take us in English and I spoke to another person on the phone who offered a different day which we couldn’t do. The whole thing took 20 minutes. More than happy to compensate for the guys time as clearly it was a mistake, however, refunding us only 20% of our full booking is outrageous. You took 80% for what? Twenty minutes to tell us there was a mistake? I applied to Viatour and the organisers declined our request. Like I said, more than happy to compensate but 80% is disproportionate and we feel cheated out of our money. For those looking for book…check the small print because these guys will take your money.
