Great experience with a fantastic tour guide. Both wine Vineyards were excellent and the flexibility to see much of the city was welcomed.

Itinerary
Following a pick-up from your accommodation in Lisbon, we cross our “Golden Gate” bridge, heading south to Palmela/Poceirão, leaving the city behind for a scenic landscape of grape vines and farm fields.
To talk about the history of Filipe Palhoça Vinhos, is to talk about a story of love of the vine inherited from father to son. It all began in 1950, when Filipe Jorge Palhoça founded this family business dedicated to wine production in the Setúbal Peninsula, with its roots in a small winery belonging to his father, João Loureiro Palhoça. The winery is located in the Palmela region, more specifically in the Poceirão area, right in the heart of the Setúbal Peninsula wine-growing region. In total, they currently have 112 hectares of vineyards spread over 11 properties located in Poceirão, Fernando Pó and Marateca. Come and discover their wines.
For your lunch, we will go to a local family-owned restaurant owned by a fisherman and his family, located in the Poceirao region. There you will have the chance to delight in local fresh fish from the region. They also have other options to offer, no worries… Note that we might use another local restaurant, in case this one will not be available.
This winery was established in 1920 by Leonilde Freitas. Later continued by her granddaughter, Germana Freitas, and then by her great-granddaughter, Ermelinda Freitas, to whom Casa Ermelinda Freitas owes its name. With the premature death of her husband, Ermelinda Freitas continued to run the company with her daughter, Leonor Freitas, who took over, giving the characteristic of the brand, being one of the few wineries in Portugal that always had female leadership. The soil of this vineyard, located in the south of Lisbon, is composed of sands very similar to beach sands and is very rich in water, playing an important role in the ripening of the grapes. The surrounding breeze from the rivers (Tejo and Sado) cools the vines during the dry summers, giving the wines their softness and elegance. It is in these sandy soils that Castelão thrives. The characteristic varietal of the Setúbal Peninsula makes up 40% of Casa Ermelinda Freitas' vineyards

We had a wonderful tour of two wineries. Plus a beautiful drive through acres and acres of majestic cork orchards and a delicious traditional Portuguese lunch at a local restaurant. Joao was a fantastic guide. He was very knowledgeable about Portugal and about the different wineries and wines. He was a fun and gracious host. Very flexible to our needs. We would love to go on another tour with him as our guide.
Group of 12 from Canada! We had a great time. Our tour guide had great stories and taste in restaurants. Ask for Paulo. Thanks.
This was an incredible private tour. We went to two very different wineries--- but both so amazing. We then had an absolutely delicious meal in Pamela. Our guide was not just our guide. It was like having your best friend taking you to really cool secret spots. Do yourself a favor and book this tour.
Expertise of guide was very good, English was also good. Automobile was comfortable with good air conditioning
Our destinations were altered due to winery availability, so we visited the Setúbal and Palmela area south of Lisbon. Ricardo was the most gracious and accommodating host, making sure we had excellent wines and delicious food. We had a nice winery tour at José Maria da Fonseca winery, learning interesting facts about the making of aged moscatel wines, tasted wine and observed cork trees at Quinta de Alcube, and ate the most delicious, fresh-as-could-be sea bass at a small family restaurant in Palmela. What made our day the best was our instant connection with Ricardo, who is charming, warm and knowledgeable. Obrigada, Ricardo!
Ricardo was such an outstanding guide. He constantly was attentive to our interests which resulted in making the tour everything we had expected and more. The wineries he selected were excellent.
Our host arrived early and that was a perfect start to a perfect day! Ricardo was easy going, gave us lots of information, and engaged us in interesting conversations about culture, entertainment, food and wine. We had a lovely lunch in a traditional Portuguese restaurant and following that we had a bit of time to get some nice pics. The day flew by. And we loved the tour and the wine tastings! It was our best day of our stay in the Lisbon area. Glenn and Cathie
Our guide Paolo was lovely and entertained us all day. We ended up in the mountainous are near setubal which was gorgeous. A fun mix of wineries, one more rural, one historic where the 7th generation of the founders still work and a coop style where people bring their own grapes. All the wines were delicious and Paolo was knowledgeable. He also took us for a pit stop to a studio that paints authentic Portuguese tiles and it was fascinating to watch them work. Lastly we stopped for lunch at a very authentic mom and pop restaurant which was delicious and cheap! Had a great day with this company would use them again in a heart beat.
Rod was our tour guide. We were very impressed. He was on time, friendly and very knowledgeable. We had a wonderful afternoon-great wines!
We went from seaside to the mountains! Enjoyed it every single minute and there was always something to see and do.
Our guide, Pualo, was fabulous. He went out of his way to accommodate our every request. He was very personable and made our tour one of the most memorable ever!
Our group had an amazing day on this tour! Rodrigo was a great driver. He let us take the day at our own pace which was great. At the first winery Sonya was so knowledgeable with all the questions we shot her. At the second winery we had an amazing time with Vera and Pete. They both have such passion for their jobs and it shows!! Highly recommended tour!!
Ricardos knowledge of the Alcube Vine yard and the wine industry in general was par excellence. I will strongly recommend this tour. Sean Webster Kildare
This is a great tour for anyone who has a great interest in wine, Joao was a wine garu but not stuffy at all. You can see he is full of passion in wine, and explained the history, culture and wine making story really well. The 2 wineries we went are small batches, top quality producers so a rare gem in the region. Must try tour for serious wine lovers.
People there are very friendly. We enjoyed beautiful view and the atomsphere there. Easy and relaxing.
We had a wonderful day touring two different wineries. The first one is in a cute little town and the winery was very boutique-ish. Just lovely and the wine was delightful. Our guide Paulo was perfect! Very engaging. He took us to a small authentic Portuguese restaurant for lunch and ordered for us. It was a very authentic meal, and quite a treat for us! The second winery was in the country with beautiful sweeping views of hills and valley and the vineyard. We absolutely loved this tour and highly recommend if you can get Paulo as your guide.
Excellent, tour guide was great, wine was excellent, everyone was nice and informative and we got to see beautiful country side.
We had a friendly and informative host (Joao) and a great day learning about Lisboa wines with a stop for a local lunch in between the two wineries. The first winery highlighted a rediscovered white grape specific to the region (although they had some delicious reds as well) and the second was a walk with the (very entertaining) winemaker around the vineyard learning about vine management followed by some wine tasting and storytelling.
This tour was an absolutely wonderful experience for my wife and myself. Having Paolo as our private tour guide made this an experience we will talk about for years to come and share with our family and friends. Paolo is so passionate about Lisboa and the surrounding area it gave us a much richer experience and understanding of Portugal's beauty. The wineries and villages we toured were intimate and picturesque. The wine was also very good. A very unique experience overall and we will return with a group of friends for an extended stay.
We had a brilliant day with Rodrigo in the wine region north of Lisbon. Rodrigo was punctual and gave us so much information about the region, wines and Portugal itself. He was so friendly and it was lovely to spend the day in his company. Both wineries were interesting and unique. Not only did we learn about how the wine was made but its history and what makes it special. We enjoyed all the wines we tasted (and thought the measures were very generous!). We would definitely recommend and plan on booking another tour next time we're in Lisbon - in fact we'd consider going back to Lisbon just to do another tour!
Having done a lot of wine tours as they are a great way to explore the country side and culture of a country, I found this tour to be one of the best. Rod is a passionate tour guide with local and culture knowledge on top of just being a really top guy. The vineyards and beautiful and have with some real characters. cannot recommend this more!
We enjoyed a wonderful day with Paulo travelling North on what we thought was a standard wine tour. Paulo spoke proudly of Portugals heritage and history showing us some amazing sights along the way. We stopped for a short visit in Mafra and were amazed by the beauty of his small community and the National Palace was breathtaking. The two winery’s we visited (Manz Wine and Quinta da Murta) were both unique and pleasing with wonderful people, wine tasting and education. We would highly recommend Paulo as a guide! Our guide Rodrigo was very prompt. We were provided so much more history of Portugal. At the end of the trip we felt we had known him forever. The interaction between all of was quite pleasant. At no time did we feel rushed to be at one stop or the other. Lunch in Manfra between wineries was a nice place. We insisted he join us but declined. Wish he had. He was a joy to be with. The second winery was a little more laid back but such a beautiful setting. And the tour there was phenomenal. Mario was an interesting character. We probably overstayed out tour. The wines were fantastic. At no time did we feel rushed. I hope if you ever had Rodrigo as a guide you will not be disappointed.
Rod was right on time at our hotel in Lisbon (in fact he was a early so we got started before 10 😀). We had a great time at the wineries and at our little stop over in Mafra. Rod was an excellent guide teaching us about both Portuguese culture and wine. I highly recommend this tour.
Paulo collected us from our hotel and took us in his van to Manzwine where we were able to view where the wine is processed and stored. Here we sampled 6 wines and tasted local bread and olive oil. We then went for lunch in a town on route to our next vineyard. Quinta da Murta was our second vineyard, where we walked through the vines, visited where the wine was produced and stored and then sampled a further 3 wines. Mario was a great tour guide at Quinta da Murta and made us feel very welcome. We would certainly visit these vineyards again in the future and would recommend this tour to anyone.
Excellent, went alone with tour guard , as rest of family was sick.. Lovely day and other winery were different. Great lunch in local village, no tourist around. Nice to get away in country side and experience the local culture. Great wine too.
Okay - our second trip to Lisbon, and the 4th & 5th day tour with Taking U There - so you can assume a positive review. João, in usual style, was clear about pickup details (right down to the satellite pic from google maps), insisting to pick us up as close as possible to our locale in spite of tiny one-way nonlinear streets. We were transported to places off the beaten tourist path such as (on the 4th tour) the little church in the grotto, a local restaurant with a large array of traditional Portuguese dishes, (on the 5th tour) Cheleiros and the quintessential little bridge playing a key role in the transport of the supplies to the Mafra National Palace - an amazing site itself and somewhat of a secret from the masses. There were qualitative tastings (on the Setubal tour) at the small family-run Alcube winery and (on the North Lisbon tour) of Manz, perhaps lesser-known to the tourist but operated within the standards characteristic of the best wineries around the world. We were thrilled to discover one of the Manz wines is available right here at home so of course, it's on order :) There was no feeling of being rushed through the sites and João without hesitation tweaked the tour to suit our wishes. It was like touring with a good friend who also happens to be very knowledgeable. We look forward to more of the same on our next visit!

Our tour guide, Paulo, was excellent! He picked us up from our Lisbon apartment and as we were leaving Lisbon, he recommended restaurants to visit as well as attractions to see which were very close to our location. He was very knowledgeable about Portugal as well as this wine region. We visited Mafra and had a very good typical Portuguese lunch at a local restaurant. During the day, we visited two wineries where we tasted their wine and were given a history of the winery as well as a description of their wine production. We were very impressed with the winery choices and we would definitely recommend this tour!

This was a great tour and if you are a wine loving person you should absolutely do! Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative and the 2 wineries we visited had excellent samples and winemakers who gave us the low down on the grapes, climate and ratings of each. It was a great afternoon and would highly recommend!

Paulo, our guide was very good. The Quitas we visited were, overall, good. Manzwine deserves a special mention. Rita, our host, was knowledgeable and happy to answer our many questions about the winemaking processes and wines. The wines were very good. Paulo took us to a small cafe for a typical Portuguese meal, including soup, sardines and mackerel. He also went out of his way to organise vegetarian options for one of us.

Paulo was excellent. He came on time, drove well, was polite courteous and informative.
He took us to very good places.

We highly recommend him to our family and firends

We had a truly wonderful day. First communication prior to the tour was great, received a few emails confirming time and place for pickup. We were picked up promptly at our hotel, actually Paolo was early, we were still eating breakfast. It was pouring rain, and he literally pulled the van to the door and was right there with the umbrella. We enjoyed both wineries, both the staff that did the tours and the wines as well. Beautiful countryside and the people were genuinely warm and kind. Paolo was a great guide. So energetic, you can tell he's passionate about Portugal, wine and food. Made a couple of stops, one in Mafra to see the lovely church and then to sample the best nata in Portugal. Would highly recommend a day trip with this company!

We had a fantastic day with Joao from TakingUThere, visiting two gorgeous vineyards within the Lisbon area. The private vineyard tours were really informative and interesting - and really fun! - and the wine we was fantastic. We also made a quick stop in Mafra to see the palace and learn a bit about the town. Joao is extremely personable and knowledgeable about Portugal, which made the time spent driving pass very quickly. Overall, it was a perfect day - and a great value!

AMAZING day!!! A must when visiting Lisbon....Joao was a great guide! Knowledgeable and eager to please - it was so nice to have personalized service.... the vineyards are simply beautiful and the wine is divine! The sommeliers at the vineyards were passionate and excited to host us. It was a special experience and highlight of our trip!

We had an amazing wine tour with Paolo, covering two vineyards and several stops along the countryside to get a better feel for the areas we were visiting. Paolo is a great guide - he is very informative, makes you feel comfortable, and wants you to have the best day possible by catering the tour to your preferences. At lunch, Paolo got a local restaurant recommendation, and helped us order some local favorites. Definitely recommend this tour, it was one of our favorite days of the whole trip!

This trip is fantastic and we could not have loved Paulo more as our tour guide. He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the history and culture of Portugal all while drinking delious wines. Would recommend this trip to anyone!

Paolo was fabulous. He was very engaging and informative with a great passion for his country and culture. The wine tastings were each unique and personal learning experiences, and the wines were fantastic. We could have chatted with Mario all day. We had a wonderful lunch at a charming little local spot in Mafra.
It was a fantastic way to spend the day, and we highly recommend this tour.

Our Lisbon wine tour was fantastic. We booked our vacation through a well- known travel agent who scheduled all of the tours except the wine tour which we booked through Viator. By far the Viator Wine Tour was the best tour of our two week Spain Portugal vacation. Our guide, Paulo L with the company Viator engaged, Taking You There, was excellent. He was knowledgeable, humorous, spoke excellent English and made the tour memorable and a lot of fun. The wineries Manz Wine and Quinta du Murta were old world and charming. Our hosts at the wineries were knowledgeable and hospitable. The wine was excellent and the scenery was very nice. We will be booking more of our tours through Viator in the future because of our experience with this tour and specifically with our guide Paulo

The tour was awesome! Paulo was a great guide! Plenty of site seeing, good lunch, a little walking and lots of wine! The wine to buy was super cheap as well! We brought several bottles back! Definitely would recommend!

It was a definite worthwhile tour. Paolo, our guide was really good and went out of his way to show us as much as possible. It was an amazing experience. We enjoyed the 2 winetastings very much, also the traditional village he took us to, which we most definitely would never have seen on our own, even the lunch in a local restaurant was great and of course the very old Roman bridge was something we wont forget. We recommend this tour and Paolo is such a good tour guide. Would love to do another tour with him.

We really enjoyed the tour from start to end. From the moment we were picked up at our hotel, we were in very good hands with Joao as we drove out of Lisbon he pointed out some highlights of the city, told us about what to expect that day and made us feel very welcome and comfortable.
We saw some stunning country side and learned about some of the trades and traditions of the Portuguese. Once out of Lisbon we parked the car and had a lovely stroll through a small town to get a taste of life in the countryside. We looped back and had our first stop at a lovely winery with an incredible story. The owner discovered he had an extinct grape growing on his property. Very fun to drink something so unique in a very modern winery tucked amongst old world tradition.
We got back in the car and visited a few additional road side sites as we rambled our way in Joaos capable hands to the next winery. Again, we were welcomed like friends to our second stop and very entertained by the wonderful charm of the winemaker and his interesting approach to making wine in his region.
This tour appealed to us as it was a glimpse into smaller wineries with unique stories and very passionate people making great wine. We were very happy with our choice! Joao was very attentive and full of information. A great way to spend a day if youre in Lisbon and looking for a day trip.
