Meeting Point
Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary, in Belém, Lisbon. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and the Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or Age of Exploration) during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Belém Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage located in Lisbon that played a key role in Europe’s Age of Discoveries, since it served both as a fortress and as a port from where Portuguese explorers departed to establish what would be the first European trade in history with China and India. It also served as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.
This museum is housed in a group of buildings classified as national heritage - the Central Tejo or Lisbon power station. Besides the building itself, the main interest is the machinery used to supply electricity to the city of Lisbon in the first half of the 20C. It includes 19C dynamos and electric motors, steam engines, high-pressure boilers, hydraulic generators and other tools and equipment.
Inaugurated in October 2016 within the framework of EDP Foundation’s long-running policy of cultural patronage, MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is an international institution dedicated to arouse critical discourse and creative practice with the intent of sparking new understandings about the historical present and a responsible commitment to the future. Located on the riverfront in Lisbon’s historical Belém district, MAAT comprises a former power station built in 1908 – MAAT Central – and a contemporary building – MAAT Gallery – connected via a park that extends along the River Tagus: MAAT Garden. In addition to the programme of temporary exhibitions and activities – Agenda – the museum also features permanent exhibitions such as The Electricity Factory at Central Tejo and the sculptures in the outdoor spaces.
The Fábrica Nacional de Cordoaria, or Cordoaria Nacional, belonged to the Portuguese Navy. This was where the cables, sisal ropes, sails and flags that equipped the Portuguese ships were manufactured. The building, which dates to the 1770s, has been classified as a national monument since 1996. The art gallery, housed in the Torreão Nascente (Eastern Tower), regularly holds major exhibitions from Portuguese and international collections.
Travelers will pass under the bridge The 25 de Abril Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tagus river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966, and a train platform was added in 1999. It is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, US, because they are both suspension bridges of similar color. It was built by the American Bridge Company which constructed the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, but not the Golden Gate. With a total length of 2,277 metres (7,470 ft), it is the 32nd largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper deck carries six car lanes, while the lower deck carries a double track railway electrified at 25 kV AC. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge. The name "25 de Abril" commemorates the Carnation Revolution.
Bairro Alto is one of Lisbon’s most historic and lively neighborhoods, celebrated for its distinct day-and-night contrasts. During the day, it offers a calm atmosphere with traditional architecture, small independent shops, and colorful street art. As night falls, it comes alive as one of the city’s most popular nightlife districts, packed with bars, restaurants, and Fado houses. Perched on a hill, its narrow cobblestone streets blend residential charm with a vibrant commercial scene. Chiado, Lisbon’s perennial upmarket neighbourhood, is a place of studios, original shops, renovated spaces and marvellous pavement cafés for watching the constant coming and going of those shopping, wandering and those still trying to figure out where the river is. Baixa, more traditional and authentic, serves up souvenir shops, famous patisseries and adventurous eateries. Take your time to discover the streets and corners and all their charms.
The Praça do Comércio is located in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. Situated near the Tagus river, the square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira (Royal Ribeira Palace) until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodeled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown, ordered by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, who was the Minister of the Kingdom of Portugal from 1750 to 1777, during the reign of Dom José I, King of Portugal.
From the River you can see the beautiful Castelo de São Jorge that stands majestically above Lisbon and is one of the finest tourist attractions in the city.
Alfama, the oldest and most traditional neighbourhood in Lisbon, with cobbled lanes and alleys and steep, gruelling inclines, should be discovered little by little, stopping frequently to savour the view, atmosphere and authentic spirit of the oldest side of the capital. Take a deep breath and start to climb the hill that will reveal one of the best views of the city.
Almada, on the south bank of the River Tagus, has undoubtedly the best view of the city of Lisbon. The most outstanding views are from the castle, the panoramic funicular of the Boca do Vento (Mouth of the Wind), and above all the statue of Christ the King, built in 1959. In past centuries, Almada was a popular summer resort for the Court, which ordered the construction of stately homes and buildings that are still preserved in the city. Life in Almada does not revolve only around the capital, where most of its inhabitants work; it is a city with its own life, the setting for well-attended events like the Theatre Festival.
The Sanctuary of Christ the King is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon situated in Almada, in Portugal. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument. The project was inaugurated on 17 May 1959, while Portugal was ruled by António de Oliveira Salazar. The giant statue in cement was erected to express gratitude because the Portuguese were spared the effects of World War II.

A boat tour is a great way to see a sample of Lisbon’s key sights. Luis and Vasco were wonderful from the moment they assisted us boarding and settled us in with wine or soft drink (remained available through the cruise). They were friendly and gave clear and interesting information about the various sights. They always looked out for our safety, for example advising us whenever another boat’s wake would impact us. I appreciated that we sailed to the far side of the river for a closer look at those sights. A tour a few years ago with a different company didn’t do that. As we returned to the dock Luís pointed out an excellent fish restaurant and advised us to hurry over for lunch. The recommendation was spot on.
It's been a while since me and my partner went on this tour, but I couldn't not leave them a review! I booked it as one of various surprise birthday activities, and let me tell you how wonderful it was starting the day with stunning views and green wine (no one judged haha!) Our guide, Benedita was a very warm person, with immense love for her homecountry, which showed in her narration. She also answered a lot of extra questions for us, concerning both the history and more activities we could do. Hate to admit it, but we were a bit late, yet the staff was very patient and after proper communication, they gave us some extra time to arrive. Don't be like us though. I was also worried that we'd get sea sick, so I was careful about what we ate for breakfast, and took a pill for nausea; in the end everything was fine!
This was our third time sailing with Palma Yachts and was absolutely the best yet. We booked onto a small group sailing but on arrival discovered we were the only couple booked on and so had the boat all to ourselves. As always the crew are so knowledgeable and full of historical facts about Lisbon. From start to finish this was a truly unforgettable experience and really not expensive. As there were no other paying members of the public on Board we were allowed to steer the yacht for a short while. a lovely touch that will always be remembered. If you haven't sailed with Palma Yachts its time you tried it.
Such a great time in the yatch. the capitan was incredible sharing the history of Lisbon. Great activity to explore Lisbon from a different perspective
A great 2 hours sail. Well worth the money. Our boat crew very knowledgeable and explained the many land marks that we passed.
Awesome sail with my daughter! Beautiful, Relaxing, Informative! Antonio and Rui were extremely personable and friendly crew! Open and receptive! Attentive and hospitable! Will make you feel like a good old friend. Suggest this particular sail and crew to anyone! Absolutely loved it!!!!! 5 star effortlessly!
This was a wonderful experience . Our sailing adventure was another way to see Lisbon. The two tour guides were the best, personal, knowledgeable tour guides!
Very informative tour. Lovely hosts Benny & John Different perspective of Lisbon from the river. Thoroughly recommended
This year we've decided to celebrate the birthday of our daughter differently...and I'm so happy we did! The trip was not only amazing and blessed by the very good weather, but the skipper also gave us a 5 star reception! We took 7 kids between the ages of 6 and 7y and they took part of the adventure, so much more then we do! They were true sailors for a few hours, and oh men you should see the smiles on his little faces! I was unsure if the kids at this age would enjoy, but after a few minutes after leaving the port, that doubt was washed away! In summary, an amazing experience that I would surely repeat it again!!
Great two hour tour where you actually sail and not just motor. My family thoroughly enjoyed it. Also had some wine and took in the sights. Telma and Antonio were wonderful and very attentive. Would do it again.
This was an amazing trip on a beautiful yacht. The weather was perfect for sailing and our skipper Benny and crew John made us feel most welcome and safe. Benny’s stories about local history and the beautiful landmarks we sailed past were really interesting. We also enjoyed the wine and conversation very much and this trip was the highlight of our visit to Lisbon.
This was my husband’s and my first time visiting Portugal, and we thought a sailing trip would be a great way to see the city. We booked the two-hour tour with Palmayachts, and it exceeded our expectations in the best possible way! Our guide, Benny, was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us a fascinating history of not just Lisbon, but Portugal as a whole. The day started with a light haze over the river, which made for a beautiful scene as we watched the sun burn through and illuminate the coastline. Our captain, Miguel, navigated the breezy conditions effortlessly, making the experience both fun and exciting—especially when the catamaran caught the wind and tilted on its side! Beyond the amazing sailing experience, we also got a great perspective on parts of the city we wanted to explore further once we were back on land. It was an unforgettable introduction to Lisbon, and we couldn’t recommend it more!
It was a glorious day weather wise which just made the trip even more special. Benny and Francisco looked after us really well and we're so knowledgeable on Portuguese and Lisbon history. One of the best sailing trips we have ever been on
This was the best tour we did in Lisbon. Benny and Miguel were so kind and knowledgeable and made us feel like family
Benny and Fransisco were amazing sailors! Made us feel so loved in Lisbon. We will be coming back and hope to have these amazing people show us around again.
We had an amazing experience! Everything was perfect. Miguel and Francisco were incredible hosts. Expert navigators, very attentive and knowledgeable. They created a special atmosphere on board. The views were breathtaking and the trip was sooooo relaxing. This experience is a must if you visit Lisbon. Don’t miss it!
We did the sailing tour with Benny and Joao and it was really amazing. We were all really impressed. Benny told us a lot about the history of Lisbon and it was really interesting. She does a great job :) This sailing tour should definitely be on the program if you visit Lisbon :) Benny and Joao, thank you very much for this great experience :)
Gorgeous views from the river and a nice overview of history from our captain. Miguel and Luiz were classy, gracious and knowledgeable. Wonderful experience- a highlight for us in our 3 day visit!
Awesome experience! Great knowledgable crew, Benny/Tefres. Benny has great experience in handling the sailboat. Her knowledge of history/culture is immense and she enjoys sharing that information with you. Highly recommend this company and definitely this crew!!
My dad and I had a lovely time on this tour! We loved the views, captured amazing photos and felt like we really got an educational lesson on the history of Lisbon Old town. Highly recommend this tour. You won't regret it.
We had the most amazing time on board the palma yacht. Great way to spend the time learning about Alison, maritime history and see the city from a different vantage point. We skipped the busy sunset cruise for an early morning and had the yacht to ourselves 😍. Definitely a must
The boat tour was so informative and it was a beautiful day to sail. Our guides were very nice and we felt safe.
We had a lovely relaxing 2 hour sail along the river of Lisbon city. Thank you to our guide Telma who made us feel comfortable, relaxed and informed for the whole trip and even gave us a mini photo shoot on board. We had an amazing day.
What a great adventure!! Benny and Vasco were great guides/ captains on this 2 hr sunset sail around Lisbon. Our first day in Lisbon and this was a great way to start it off. A simple cocktail, a great amount of history they shared and new friends were made. It was Very easy to uber to the marina only about 15 min from the downtown Lisboa areas. Thank you again for a great time. Amber and Steve
This was an amazing small-group sailing experience on the river. Miguel and Rui were fantastic - safe sailors and great company. Would definitely go again next time I'm in Lisbon.
The Tagus River cruise was a perfect experience for the last day of our family vacation in Lisbon. The views of the city, historic landmarks and builds provided us with a whole new perspective. It was amazing and we highly recommend this sailing cruise. We were fortunate to have both guides available to us for our questions and to provide information that was interesting. The drinks offered elevated our experience! Thank you for the memory!
Our tour operator was so lovely and really knowledgable. It was a great way to relax and take in Lisbon at the same time
I went on this boat tour with my mom and we loved it. Benny knew so much about Lisbon and Portugal and it was wonderful learning all about the history out at sea. I would absolutely recommend this tour
I ended up doing the sunset tour instead. It was an excellent, enjoyable experience with Palma Yachts. I highly recommend it. But I suggest booking direct on their website instead of through TripAdvisor. For this booking TripAdvisor took me to Viator and instead of charging me in AUD as per my TripAdvisor account charged me in USD. This wasn't obvious until I got the confirmation email. Protesting to TripAdvisor was a waste of time. The lesson from this is always check the currency you are being charged in and consider booking directly with the tour operator.
We had an incredible time on this 2 hour boat tour. It was nice weather when we went. Drinks were offered and they took our pictures. It was nice to see the city from the water. Highly recommend!
This cruise was one of the highlights of our two week visit to Portugal. The tour guide and skipper are really terrific. We learned so much about the history of the area, the architecture and how the earthquake of 1755 changed Lisbon forever. Mark, who is an experienced sailor, was delighted to have the opportunity to steer the boat for much of the cruise. Our guide gave us great suggestions of places to visit on our journey north. Making the arrangements, finding the meeting point, and the friendly attention of the staff to all of us on board made this a truly wonderful tour and we highly recommend it.
Tomas and Francisco were fantastic guides. We ended up on this tour with only one other couple and it might be our favourite thing we did in Lisbon. Highly recommended.
My husband and I visited Portugal on my birthday and we had unforgettable yacht tour with Palmayachts Team. The host on the yacht was beyond welcoming, and were there to make us as comfortable as possible the entire time. We really enjoyed all the stories and information she had to share. It was chilly, so they gave us blankets and drinks (beer, green wine). A must do and an unbelievable value for your money. I’m so happy we took this trip!
5/5⭐️! What a wonderful day to sailing with palmayachats!! Tour guide & Captain Penny is very professional!! I am very enjoy this 2 hours trip!!! Highly recommend to choose them!! The trip is great with kids as well
A new perspective of Lisbon with a very friendly and professional crew on a very comfortable sail boat. Thank you Benedicta and João for a wonderful afternoon.
We really enjoyed our 2 hour cruise with a great crew, Miguel and Alex were very welcoming and knowledgeable and had a great since of humor (and appreciation of good music)! Our group was 4 of the 8 passengers and we got to meet some good people. The sail boat was in very good condition as well. Highly recommend with a very good price with GetYourGuide website.
Great experience, loved it. We had a great time. Beautiful yact and the skiper had a lot to say about the city.
Fabulous sailing with a small group of other passengers; Luis and Fernando were great guides and hosts; blankets provided if needed and nice chilled glass (or two) of wine
Excellent cruise thank you! My husband and I had a lovely cruise departing at 2pm last Saturday! We would highly recommend this cruise. Was great to get a different view of the city from the river.

My 2 hour boat tour was a wonderful experience. The guides were fantastic, very knowledgeable about the city and gave us a rundown on the history of the landmarks that we saw along the way. This 2 hour sailing trip with palmayachts was one of the best experiences me and my partner had of Lisbon. Luis and Luis are highly professional sailors with lots of knowledge about the river and the city. Everything went smoothly from the beginning of the trip to the end of it. Both me and my partner loved every second of the trip. We learned super much new things about the city and its landmarks. Thanks a lot to Luis and Luis for making this great experience for me and my partner. Cheers from Sweden. /Fredrik and Melinda
