The Oceanaria is a great attraction. However, the crowds do need to be managed - either spread out more or staff on hand to deal with running children. Constantly being run into was a problem for my companion with a walking stick That said, the fish are amazing.

Itinerary
A visit to the Oceanário de Lisboa is a unique experience that will take you to know and feel the unforgettable magic of the underwater world. Embark on this contemplative journey to discover 8000 sea creatures, from 500 different species. The permanent exhibition (Aquarium) celebrates life on Earth with a central 5-million-liter saltwater aquarium surrounded by four marine habitats representing habitats of the North Atlantic, Antarctic*, Temperate Pacific, and Tropical Indian Ocean, creating the illusion that we are looking at one aquarium and one ocean. The visit takes place on two levels, terrestrial and underwater, crossing the temperate, tropical, and cold waters of the different oceans of the planet. Discover also the «Forests Underwater», a work by master Takashi Amano, who presents us with tropical forests through the largest nature aquarium in the world and the new «Submerged Universe» exhibition, an immersive journey into the immensity of the ocean.

Our second visit. It was a lovely experience for the kids (and adults). A wide range of species on display with explanations to educate ourselves. The cafe was very good too.
Small but entertaining. Highlight is the central tank. Children love it. Could be a long walk for some kids.
We thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful aquarium! We have visited aquariums all over the world ( Europe, New Zealand, several in the USA, etc) We appreciate the many unusual species they house here. The aquarium is designed for easy access, multiple viewing windows for the largest tank and is handicapped accessible! We highly recommend making time to visit. Also, we arrived close to 4 pm and were given tickets for 50% off because of the time. Although there was a line to enter, we didn’t notice any crowds and all visitors had ample space and time for close up pictures of the tanks! As it is open until 8 pm we had plenty of time to meander through!! The gift shop was also lovely. Some hotels have discounted tickets but you get the same discount if you buy tickets online.
This is a world class aquarium. Allow a couple of hours to visit. The associated cable car ride is fun but the cars get hot on a warm day. If you land in Lisbon after an overnight flight from North America this is an easy way to spend a few hours on your first day.
The aquarium is a fabulous facility. The displays are incredible with explanations in both Portuguese and English. My daughter and I both enjoyed the experience..
It was a well spent day! Facility is beautifully kept. Plenty of beautiful fish, corral, etc! I also took the cable car after and that was a nice view. 2 recommendations buy the tickets online and for the cable car do it for one way and walk back…. If the weather’s nice it’s a nice walk
Best aquarium we've ever seen. The central tank is so large that it offers multiple -- maybe 10 or more -- windows into the tank on two levels, some very large, some smaller next to the nooks where some fish and creatures preferred to hole up. Lots of different kinds of marine life, but also penguins, otters and birds. It also has smaller tanks that offer closeup views of sea life that might not be visible in the large tank, like anemone, starfish and sea horses.
Such a lovely aquarium! We enjoyed the temporary exhibits as well as the wonderful creatures thay lived in the aquarium. My personal highlight was the Mola mola, which was a big reason for our visit.
Loved it. Central tank was amazing. Lots of viewing areas. Detailed species and habitat information; divers feeding specific species at different times; lots of areas to sit and rest as you went around the aquarium. Couldn’t fault it.
A nice place to spend a couple of hours with the kids. The area itself is very nice and also worth a stroll.
My second time here and always a blast. I do miss the water exhibit on the 3rd floor. The new tundra exhibit is kinda meh
This aquarium is one of the best we have ever seen. It is a must do when you visit Lisbon. Fee is reasonable. We spent 90 minutes seeing the various exhibits. It was crowded. I can imagine weekends are much worse. We highly recommend a visit.
I saw that this aquarium was the highest ranked TripAdvisor attraction of Lisbon, so I definitely wanted to see it. I booked my tickets online about a month before my visitation date, and while I thought that the price was high, I did spend 1.75 hours at this attraction. I lined up with all of the other people who had my visitation time, and we got processed rather quickly. I saw so many different types of fish, birds, otters, sharks, coral, jellyfish, and so many more creatures. I enjoyed a lot of of the works of art, and I liked how the information was provided about the organisms which I saw. Most descriptions were in both Portuguese and in English. This site had two (2) levels, and it featured information about the various water creatures of all of the oceans of the Earth. There were restrooms, a café, and a gift shop on this property. I also enjoyed the views and the nearby parks which were adjacent to this aquarium. It was frustrating to deal with the large crowds of the visitors, and many of the children were loud and pushy.
I visited the Oceanário de Lisboa with high expectations. It is currently ranked by Tripadvisor as the No. 1 aquarium in Europe. What I saw, however, left me deeply uncomfortable. There were only a handful of puffins – birds that naturally breed in colonies, sometimes numbering thousands. What struck me most was their appearance. I know puffins from seeing them in the wild, with their striking rainbow colours – but I did not even have to rely on memory: right beside the enclosure was an information panel showing what these magnificent birds normally look like. The contrast was painful. In front of that image, their shimmering rainbow colours seemed to have faded into shades of grey. The few puffins standing there looked miserable to me. Nearby, when I was there, every single penguin I could see was standing with its back to the visitors, staring at the artificial rock wall. Not one was facing the viewing area. I cannot judge the animals’ mental or physical state from a visit – but what I saw was profoundly disturbing. The huge central tank certainly gives the fish considerably more space. Yet even there, I noticed fish with visibly damaged fins. I cannot know what caused these injuries, but they added to my unease. Elsewhere, the conditions struck me as far worse. I saw an entire school of fish confined to a small, completely bare tank, swimming endlessly back and forth – no plants, no rocks, no structure, nothing resembling a natural habitat. It reminded me more of a holding tank at a fish market than of an environment in which wild animals should spend their lives. At some point, I simply did not want to look anymore. This raises a more fundamental question: What do we actually learn about wild animals by observing them in artificial environments? We may learn what they look like, but very little about what it means to be that animal in the wild – its natural behaviour, range, social structures and ecosystem. An artificial habitat designed to resemble nature to the human eye is still artificial. If this is considered one of Europe’s finest aquariums, perhaps we should not only ask how beautiful an aquarium is for its visitors, but what a truly outstanding marine education centre should look like in the 21st century. My suggestion to the Oceanário: Lead the way. Develop a new model of marine education that is humane, science-based and sustainable: conservation in natural habitats, marine research, underwater observation stations and cameras, responsible encounters with wildlife, and immersive technology that allows us to experience marine ecosystems without having to confine every animal we want to see. Don't build bigger tanks. Build a better idea. Portugal already has the greatest aquarium imaginable: the Atlantic Ocean itself.
Brilliant aquarium, loads of different settings, thousands of interesting sea creatures. Well worth the admission fee, I was in there for about two and a half hours, I would have stayed longer except I had to sit down. Not too crowded, but quite noisy. The staff were very helpful and professional. Book your ticket online, so you don't have to queue.
A lovely large aquarium but they let in way too many people. For the price of what you pay I don’t think it is worth it . Even with ticket have to queue to get in and inside it is Very crowded - hard to get to the front of the glass
we booked tickets in person admission fee was cheap. we stayed less than an hour. it was overcrowded they let too many visitors at once to point you will not see much of anything. dissapointing. the staff was friendly. the penguins were cool.
We went to the Oceanário starting at 13h, it wasn't that busy but the noise of children is present. We were able to see everything and people were nice, taking turns occupying the best view of certain aquariums. I personally think it was pricey but the Oceanário is really big and they help with projects for the well being of oceans all around the world. We were there in total for about 2 and half hours and that was enough to be tired but satisfied. My favourite exposition is the temporary tropical forest and the otters! Everyone loves otters! PS: Photos were taken by my 10 year old niece, enjoy :)
Booked tickets for her halfway through a 7 mile walk from the cruise ship we were on. Given a time slot. The aquarium itself is very good. Large central aquarium with other smaller exhibits around. The problem was there were far too many people there. Struggled to get a look at the exhibits at times. Being only 5' tall, I felt pushed around by other people.
We had a lot of fun. It is not a big aquarium overall compared to others I been to. The large tank in the middle is the largest I have ever seen. The rain forest was fantastic.
It was an amazing experience, kids and adults will love it. The sharks and string rays were so large with great views. The aquarium was so clean and clear for everyone to experience it in front of our eyes. The area the aquarium is set is so beautiful with greenery.
children really enjoyed the visit and guide was excellent
This place is nice for a family adventure. You must give yourself time because it is by hour entrance.
We had a wonderful time. It was perfect for all ages. We had three generations with us and from the oldest to the youngest there was something to see and enjoy!
Fantastic aquarium we didn’t even manage to see it all Came with my twin toddlers and in-laws during off peak at €50 a ticket it’s quite pricey but absolutely worth it we will be coming back as we didn’t see it all We spent majority of the day there and it wasn’t very busy, food was decent in the cafe, no other aquarium compares to this one for us now we have been spoilt it’s very child friendly
A fantastic aquarium. It’s not inexpensive but you can easily spend 3 hours immersing yourself in the exhibits. All ages are catered for and we would definitely recommend.
An excellent 4 hours spent here. The displays were clean and clearly well maintained. Not one dead or poorly fish to be seen anywhere. The central tank is just amazing with so many viewing points where you can see everything from different angles. It’s like there are multiple tanks.. The sea otters are an absolute delight and very entertaining. From start to finish such a great day out and the staff were really helpful too.
A big amount of different fishes. Very nice. Was crowded.
Well-maintained aquarium with many interesting exhibits and animals including penguins, otters, and a huge central fish tank.
This is the best aquarium I have ever been to ! It’s so well worth it ! My coworkers all said they would visit it again !
Amazing experience! We’ve been to some oceanarium before but this was so special. Great atmosphere even lots of visitors. The exhibits were one of a kind. We loved it and well recommended.
Beautiful aquarium with lots of exhibits
Superb relaxing experience. Great food in the café before . Super set up.
Short and sweet. Should only take 1-2 hours but there is plenty to see between all the different exhibits.
This was a repeat visit and once again, it didn’t disappoint. Highly recommend visiting.
Very large aquarium with a wide variety of sea life. Good interpretive materials. Loved seeing the sun fish, the penguins, the sharks, the garden eels, and the sea otters.
The aquarium is beautiful with an amazing variety of fish, and the large glass panels allow for truly great views, although it does get quite crowded. For future visitors, I would recommend skipping the cable car add-on. It is quite pricey for such a short ride and functions just like the Disney Skyliner if you’ve used it at Disney World. If you have already experienced the novelty of that type of ride, it is definitely not worth the extra cost, especially since you can get similar or better views from the local castles and other nearby attractions if you have already visited those.
Lovely aquarium, loads of different species.
Stumbled upon this after an event at the FIL looking for cable cars - the cable cars were closed for maintenance but we decided to pop in - initially thought it was a little pricy and was worried after completing the first bit as you come out of the building back to where you was and think is that it but…. Honestly one of the best aquariums we have visited so many things to see and it wraps around the large tank in the middle - so many species …… Kids and adults loved it and probably one of the best places we visited this trip
Such an incredible experience. It was as educational as it was visually stunning.
Rita took us on a private behind the scenes tour. My 13 year old said it was one of his favorite adventures thus far. I highly recommend!
We were in port on a very hot day and looked on Viator to find an activity indoors. We bought the tickets on Viator, and caught a cab. Lisbon Oceanario was a short ride from the port. It did not disappoint! The “One Planet, One Ocean” permanent exhibit connects the world’s water sources in a way that shows how everything affects our planet-plastics pollution, clear cutting of forests, climate change. The marine life is extraordinary! A giant sunfish, rays and sharks, etc. in the main tank, with areas devoted to penguins and to otters as well. Despite being there on a busy Saturday, it did not feel crowded. The gift shop is enormous and filled with ecologically made gifts.
This is a good aquarium. Loved the different ocean environments in the aquarium . Kids will love it .
Worth the visit. Plan a few hours. Take your time.
Better than expected lots to see great for anyone interested in marine life
We went with 3 teenagers. We all enjoied it. Large and alot to see. Many people there, but still nice. We were there for many hours.
Very cool! Altough it takes like 1 hr to visit the whole…. Thing. it has very cool stuff! Like penguins!
Spent three hours enjoying the displays and all the different sea creatures. Learned new things, saw creatures I only had read about. I could have spent hours watching the shark and ray tank. Well done and worth my time and ticket.
We made a last moment decision and we enjoyed every moment!! It was also very exciting to see the different groups of children (students ?) and their enthusiasm 🙂 You can go at your own pace and spend as much time as you want 👍🏼
