I always take a cooking class when doing European travel as I want to take home the knowledge of the local cuisine. This class on traditional Portuguese cooking was exceptional! I even purchased a Cataplana, the traditional Portuguese pan used to steam seafood on a bed of vegetables you create. Our chef Sylvia was "over the top GREAT" in her instruction, knowledge and personality. Sylvia was very well organized in her planning as she instructed us through multiple dishes. This class is truly "hands on"- you're not watching, you're listening to instructions and doing. Highly recommended for not just the Foodie but for anyone as you will expand your knowledge and gain confidence in the kitchen.

We were lucky, in that we had a small group of four. Our instructor was absolutely the best! Eager to show us the local market, teach us about the culinary history of Lisbon and Portugal, and showed us how to prepare the best meal I’ve had while here. All this and the personal stories shared by all made this a most memorable part of our stay here I this beautiful city.
Wonderful experience! Very enjoyable experience . Food we prepared was delicious. A real hands on experience . Went to market first to get the food and while there had delicious bread , cheese and meats. Learned about the different breads. Instructor was delightful . Lot’s of wine!
Samara and soux chef were absolutely wonderful team. So knowledgeable and friendly. Learned authentic dishes that were flavorful and easy ti prepare from farm fresh ingredients. Excellent kinship and made lasting friends.
This was one of the best experiences of my time in Lisbon and far more than just a cooking class. The day began with a visit to the market alongside our chef, where we selected incredibly fresh local ingredients, including golden dorado and sardines. Even before the cooking started, we enjoyed wonderful bread, cheese, meats, and coffee while learning about the market and Portuguese food culture. With only five people in our group, the experience felt personal, relaxed, and authentic. The walk back to the cooking space was short, and the venue itself was beautiful. It felt like having lunch in a friend's home in Portugal, combined with the convenience and functionality of a professional kitchen. We prepared a delicious three-course meal, beginning with gazpacho and followed by an amazing seafood and vegetable dish cooked in a cataplana. As a serious home cook, I was fascinated by this traditional Portuguese pan, which I had never used before. I loved it so much that I asked the chef where to buy one in Lisbon. The cataplana is now packed in my suitcase, and I look forward to recreating the meal at home and reliving my favorite food memories from Portugal. Our chef was absolutely wonderful. She was a passionate teacher who shared not only cooking techniques but also the history of the dishes, Portuguese food traditions, and the cultural connections between Portugal and Brazil. Her enthusiasm made the entire experience engaging and memorable. The meal concluded with a sponge cake made with fragrant oranges from southern Portugal. The aroma alone was incredible. While orange desserts are not usually my favorite, this was exceptional and something I'll be talking about long after returning home. I had only ever eaten canned sardines before this class, so preparing and tasting fresh sardine fillets was a completely new experience and one of the highlights of the day. The food was outstanding, I made new friends, and I came away with new cooking skills, wonderful memories, and a deeper appreciation for Portuguese cuisine. I would enthusiastically recommend this experience to anyone visiting Lisbon, especially those who love food, cooking, and cultural immersion.
Viator never disappoints! The kitchen was pristine and our chef, Sylvia, provided a wonderful experience which fit the description of our tour. Our group did all the cooking! So generous with the food and wine and a surprise starter spread before the cooking started! Always book with Viator; the guides are local and the best!
Angie was an exceptional guide. She spoke fluent English and made us feel welcome and supported throughout the whole experience. Starting the tour with a visit to the markets helped us understand the cooking process from farm to plate. Back at the cooking school the process was professional and instructive and irrespective of each individual's ability we were tasked with preparing a fabulous four course meal that we enjoyed with an abundance of wine.
My husband and I had so much fun taking this cooking class with Sylvia. The experience started with a fantastic trip to a truly authentic local market, where we purchased fresh produce and seafood for our meal. Sylvia was fun, warm, and knowledgeable. She made sure everyone in the class was actively included in the cooking process. We also really loved meeting and chatting with travelers from other parts of the world. To top it all off, the end result was a absolutely fabulous meal. Highly recommended!
Renata was amazing! The walk to the market provided insights into the area. The market was an amazing way to buy all the ingredients that were going to be used. The cooking was fun, educational, and easy. I would recommend this to anyone regardless of cooking experience.
This market and cooking experience was phenomenal! Samara led our group in a preparing a delicious set of dishes and we learned new cooking techniques and an appreciation for Portuguese cuisine beyond salt cod.
Renatta was awesome! We had a great time at the market and learning about Portuguese cooking. The food was outstanding. Would do again if visiting Lisbon.
We had a fantastic experience! Our chef and guide Samara was knowledgeable, kind, and made us feel amazing! The food was delicious and kids had a blast! All our kids (ages 6,8,11) and us Loved it!
Excellent cooking class! Our instructor was lively and passionate about food and Portugal. We tried new foods and had fun preparing a variety of dishes. It was one of the highlights of the trip!
I had a great experience on this tour! Going to the local fish market and veggie stand was such an incredible experience, especially because I live in the Midwest of the United States, where it is difficult to find fresh fish. We made so many incredible dishes. The grilled sardines were my favorite. I took this tour on 7/7/26, and unfortunately I don’t remember the name of our chef. She was great though.
From shopping for ingredients to eating our meal, Samara and Fernanda's class was a delight from start to finish. The entire experience was educational, the atmosphere was always friendly, and I'm excited to try these recipes at home.
Our family of 5 ranging from age 20 to age 80 enjoyed every moment of this cooking experience! Our chef was so knowledgeable about the market, Portuguese history and food, and so calm and friendly. We met at 9:30 and started with a tour of the market. Then we cooked and ate until 3pm; the pace was leisurely and pleasant - not at all rushed- with plenty of time for questions and learning. And the food was excellent, if I do say so myself as one of the cooks. We made gazpacho, clams, fish rice, tempura green beans, sardines with roasted peppers on corn bread (the highlight of the meal), cataplana with chorizo, and poached pears. Everything was delicious and we enjoyed every moment.
We had an amazing food tour experience in Lisbon with Pablo as our guide. He was friendly, helpful, informative, and incredibly personable from start to finish. The tour included 6 different stops, each with fantastic food and drinks that gave us a great taste of the city. What really made the experience stand out was how Pablo went beyond just the food. He shared fascinating insights about Lisbon’s art, history, and architecture, which made exploring the city feel even more meaningful. He was also full of great local tips and suggestions that helped us make the most of the rest of our trip. Highly recommend this tour (and especially Pablo) to anyone visiting Lisbon!
Loved it! Will be back for sure. This was not just chef watching!
I didn't know exactly what to expect. I do a lot of cooking & travel for food. It was overall excellent experience starting with the traditional market to pick up the produce, then heading to the well set up kitchen. The instructions were clear & the presentation style was excellent. All questions regarding the ingredients were welcomed. Having done similar style cooking classes in many other countries, this was among the best.
Great fun and food and you can learn great recipes and techniques. Fun trip to market and you can meet some fun people
A standout experience in Lisbon. The market visit and cooking class with Cooking Lisbon was the perfect mix of culture and fun. Renata was exceptional. She was incredibly detailed in explaining the ingredients and traditions and made the entire experience feel easy and enjoyable. The food was amazing and ended up being some of the best we had on our trip. Highly recommend for a true taste of Lisbon.
Our family had a wonderful time going to the market and enjoying the traditional Portuguese meal cooking class. We had two boys with us and they really enjoyed learning, cooking, and having the best authentic Portuguese meal that they made! This is a highly recommended activity if you are visiting as a family.
An excellent activity for any level cooks. Besides recipes and hands on, delicious meal and info about Portuguese food and culture. Highly recommended!
Highly recommend! This market tour and cooking class was my favorite experience in Lisbon. Our instructor Filipa was experienced, kind, patient, and knowledgeable. I learned so much about Portuguese culture from this class, and had a great time. Will cook these recipes at home. Delicious!
This was my favorite thing I did in Lisbon. It was very informative and taught me a lot about authentic Portuguese cooking. The two chefs, Angela and Sylvia, were fantastic. And the lunch was so delicious.
Angela made our experience wonderful!! From the short walk to 31 January market to select the fish, produce, bread I cheese etc…where she had great relationships with the vendors & she made us feel very welcome !! The prep work was expertly handled. Y Fernanda and we made 5 courses over the time: soup, clams, a seafood & vegetable Portuguese stew & tempura then the most amazing poached in port wine pear with homemade whipped cream and crumble! WOW!! Everything was so yummy! We rolled out of there needing a good walk to help digest our delicious meal! What a great time spent with my daughter & wife and Angela!! - Be sure to request your class be taught her! Thank you for sharing your skills and creating some great Lisbon memories!! Cheers! Lowell
This is my first time experience in Lisbon. Try something new and absolutely love it.
We thoroughly enjoyed our market/cooking class. Philipa was great, engaging and knowledgeable about Portuguese food! We did the class towards the end of our stay so my son had been enjoying fish all week and it was fun to see and learn more about what we had been eating. We got such great tips on handling/cooking fish and enjoyed the other recipes, too. (And the tasting options) I would highly recommend the class!
Great experience! Learned a lot and had fun and great food too. Angela, our chef for the day, was an excellent teacher and very knowledgeable about Portuguese food and customs.
Angela was wonderful. We learned a lot about Portuguese cooking and how to prepare from scratch some very tasty dishes. A great way to spend a wet day in Lisbon
A great experience. Highly recommend. Angela was exceptional! Fun, informative, relaxed and absolutely delicious!
My mom and I had the pleasure of taking a class with Renata and we are absolutely head over heels in love witht he experience we had! Renata was educational, fun, personable, and hands on with teaching us how to make three dishes for the afternoon. We had an incredible amount of fun joining her at the market and then coming back to the kitchen to begin prepping. We made 90% of each dish with Renata helping for timing purposes. It was incredible to be so hands on and get to filet whole fish, poach pears in a reduced wine sauce, poach eggs, and many more food elements! WE WILL be doing this class again if we're ever in Portugal and we highly recommend you take this class!
Renata was amazing! She had such a great vibe and made the whole class fun and informative. We were lucky enough to share the class with another couple that we really got along with. Instructions were easy to follow and we cooked and ate some great food. Highly recommend Renata!
Participated in about a 4+ hour course last week with Renata and had a fantastic experience! Renata was passionate, knowledgeable and a lot of fun. We started the day at a very local (non-tourist) market with an incredible array of fresh fish, shellfish, crustaceans, cheese, sausage, pork etc…we bought all of our ingredients at the market and then went back to Cooking Lisbon – which has a very well equipped, commercial kitchen. We made a number of dishes: • Sardines on toast with garlic, bell pepper and micro greens • Deep fried mackerel • Tempura green beans • Steamed Sea Bream • A soup with egg and prawn • Braised pear in Port/Maderia wine This was one of the pricier cooking classes I found – but you certainly got your money’s worth with an amazing experience, high quality ingredients, excellent instruction and a lot of fun. I would very highly recommend this – you won’t be disappointed.
This was a fun experience. We took a short walk to a local market where our chef, Marcos, let us wander for a bit while he arranged some tasty samples with local merchants. . After buying our provisions, it was back to the well equipped kitchen to drink some wine and cook. There were 8 in the group and it was a real “hands on” experience. Marcos coached, told stories, and gave us a history of the food we were preparing. We then sat down for a hearty meal with fried calamari and sardines, clams, a peasant soap, a traditional fish stew and dessert - all made by us. We enjoyed it very much and would highly recommend.
This cooking class hands down was the BEST EXPERIENCE WE HAD IN LISBON!! We had the best time with this establishment. They treated us like family and made us feel so welcome. We would highly recommend this tour. You will not be disappointed at all. From the second we walked thru the door all the way until the end we enjoyed ever second of this tour. We actually enjoyed it so much that we would have signed up for another class on the same day but the rest of the day was already booked. Angela and Felipa were unbelievably amazing. They directed and taught us everything about our meal and walked us thru preparing the most amazing meal and dessert. We seriously had the BEST time that we’ve spent in Lisbon. We cannot wait to rake another class with them. We highly recommend this cooking class and tour. We can’t imagine being treated better than what we experienced today. Thank you Angela and Felipa for the amazing hospitality. We loved every minute.
This was an exceptionally fun day. My friend and I stayed in Alfama district and had a little difficulty getting from where we were staying to the cooking class. We eventually found a tuck tuk driver who took us. We were early. They let us in early, and we could have waited until the class started. We asked for directions to a coffee shop and walked a block. When we came back, the rest of the class had arrived, and we had so much fun cooking. It was a fabulous meal with good instruction and lots of participation.
Such a great experience and Philipa was a wonderful host and chef. We visited and shopped the Mercado 61 with her, purchased supplies for the day and cooked all together in the most wonderful kitchen. Great small group of 10. We were there for 6 hours and enjoyed every minute. Would certainly recommend and great value for the experience!
Our chef was so kind and friendly! Food was delicious and loved how hands on the the class was. Quality of seafood was high but I wish there were a bit a more premium unique seafood option
It was an amazing experience and was very worth wasting half a day not exploring Lisbon We went to the market, did some tasting then went back to cook and learned new skills and had a delicious lunch. Our instructor was a sweetheart and very genuine and made us try everything
Loved visiting the fish market to pick out what we were going to cook. Renata was a great leader, helping us cook a great lunch. Kitchen is a commercial kitchen, so they had everything (and then some) you would ever need when cooking. Loved the entire time we were there!!!
Absolutely amazing experience! The hosts/chefs are so sweet, knowledgeable and friendly! It felt like we got to do so much but never felt rushed. Nice walk to the market. Snacks throughout the entire experience. Hands-on, detailed cooking guidance. Wine, juice and water always available. Delicious, several course meal after all your hard work! So much fun!
This was an amazing experience. Chef Pidro was knowledgeable and attentive. The food we prepared was beyond delicious. This was an awesome experience!
The best market tour and cooking class we’ve ever had so far when we travel!! Very informative and great for those who want to advance their cooking and chopping skills. All delicious food and wine. We made everything from scratch!!
Diane and I took this class. Started with a interesting trip around a professional market where many chefs go. We were treated to several breads, cheeses and meats and got to explore the location. Upon return, we opened our first bottle of delicious wine and went to work. We really enjoyed meeting some others in the class and sharing the experience. Finally we enjoyed our three course meal which was fantastic. We have already made the Cataplana and Orange roll dessert at home in Ohio.
Lots and Lots of food, all great. Rodrigo was a great food and Portugal wine ambassador and kept us moving through the city. Our favorite was the Mozambique restaurant, picked up a bottle of the hot sauce......and got a quick introduction to Lisbon while we made our way through the city.
A tour of the market, samples and good food. It was relaxing and educational. Food was good and we learned a few kitchen skills
Pedro was wonderful. Took the time to answer any and all questions. Was enthusiastic about so many different parts of the fresh market and how it all worked in Lisbon. The class was great, patient and guiding us through all the steps and encouraging everyone. I highly recommend the Cooking School tour
It was a fantastic day! We were a group of six. First we toured the market and bought the fish and vegetables for our three course meal. We returned and were introduced to the kitchen and started peeling and chopping — the “prep” work. Everyone got to chat and enjoy sips of Vino Verdas as we worked. The dessert was prepared first and put in the oven while we started the soup and prepped the fish for the stew. We all learned so much about the proper cleaning of shrimp and filleting fish. And cutting the vegetables just as the chef preferred. Voila! It was assembled and cooked and soon we sat down to enjoy our first course of kale soup with chorizo. Followed by the fish stew and then… the wonderful orange dessert which was light and fresh. Chef GUI was great. He answered all of our questions, taught us techniques and shared his good sense of humor and his background. It was a terrific experience! Thank you.
We had a wonderful time with Chef Gui. He took us to the daily fresh produce and meat market to have a local cheese and bread tasting and to purchase our ingredients for the class. We returned to a well equipped facility to prep and cook and eat our traditional meal together. Lots of laughs. Delicious soup, cataplana and orange cake dessert. Wonderful. A delightful, thoughtful experience.
