We had an amazing tour with Daniel. We enjoyed his professionalism, his knowledge and his easy going manner. The tour was very well organized and we will book with Daniel again when we come back to Lisbon to do a tour of Lisbon (even though we have already done a tour of Lisbon - we think we will see things with Daniel that we did not already see). While this is definitely a tour that focuses on the Jewish history of Lisbon, our guide, Diogo, provided so much more detail and information about this wonderful city. We were picked up promptly and driven to a number of locations in a very comfortable van. This allowed us to get a terrific overview of the various neighborhoods and views of the city. Diogo shared lots of detailed information about the Jews who have had a presence here for many years and really brought the history to life. It was a very enjoyable and informative 4 hour experience that I can wholeheartedly recommend.

Diogo was one of the best tour guides we’ve ever. Right from the start we could tell his high level of knowledge and enthusiasm for truly “teaching” Jewish history in Lisbon and more broadly in Portugal. Several things stood out: 1- his passion for the subject matter and genuine desire to personally continue to learn more; 2- His ability to make history come alive by, for example, on several occasions, beginning a topic: “imagine you are standing here (in a particular year) looking in this direction…..”; 3- Diogo was well-versed in Jewish terms from history, from things you would find in a synagogue, to customs; and 4- Diogo also melded Jewish historical events into more broader history of Portugal. We could not have been happier with our tour and could not recommend Diogo more highly.

Daniel was a really incredible guide. We had such a nice morning with him learning all about the Jewish history of Portugal. Touring the old city of Alfama was especially fascinating as was discovering many artifacts throughout the city bearing proof of a rich Jewish history in Lisbon. Learning about the slow revival of/awareness about the Jewish community was also interesting. We were delighted to see that the city has commemorated Jewish lives lost during the Shoah and also from the massacre of 1506. To top off the experience, we went to the oldest Ginja shop in the city! Daniel was so great! I highly recommend this tour with him!

We took a Jewish Heritage Tour in Lisbon with Daniel Bastos, our tour guide. He is so knowledgeable, and so able to convey details of the history of not only the Jews living in Lisbon, but the history of the connection among all the different communities of Christian, Muslim and Jewish living in Portugal throughout the centuries. Danielle was fantastic! His knowledge of the Jewish community in Lisbon was so interesting, not at all like we expected. The community now is very small with very little to see on a tour. But the history of the community, and specifically the hidden Jews is fascinating! Daniel showed how spot the secret places in the ancient streets where Jews successfully lived. Great history lesson!

There’s a lot of Jewish history in Portugal that most people don’t know. For example, Jewish people were forced to convert or be expelled. For those who converted, they found ways to continue practicing their faith & pass down their traditions.

He took us to all of the important places and explained things so well. He was a professor at the university for 20 years and now loves to share his knowledge and passion with others.
