Great tour. Diogo knew everything and is a good driver. He answered every question we had. The tour is a good introduction to Lisbon.

Itinerary
Begin your tour at the Santa Luzia Viewpoint, where you can take in the breathtaking views of the Tagus River framed by the red roofs of Lisbon's medieval district and the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. This panoramic spot offers a perfect introduction to the city’s historic landscape, stunning views and historical secrets.
Next, head to Santiago’s Church, where you will uncover a five-hundred-year-old espionage case that played a crucial role in one of the most important historical events of the Modern Period. This intriguing tale sets the stage for understanding Lisbon's significant role in global affairs.
S. George Castle Citadel and S. George Castle Citadel Belvedere (Does not include the visit inside the Castle). Continue to explore the St. George’s Castle Citadel, perched on the hill where Lisbon was born. This ancient fortress not only offers stunning views but also marks the place where Lisbon took its first steps toward becoming a world power. Wander through the castle grounds and imagine the strategic decisions made here that influenced the course of history.
Descend and stroll through Alfama, the city's oldest neighborhood, to witness the evolution of Lisbon during its Golden Age. As you walk through its narrow streets, you'll discover 16th-century architecture and learn about the cultural and economic boom that transformed the city.
Next, visit and discover Terreiro do Paço (Praça do Comércio), one of the most beautiful squares in the world. Picture the exotic goods arriving at Lisbon's port and the grandeur of the Royal Palace that once stood here. This square symbolizes the transition from medieval obscurantism to the flourishing cosmopolitanism of the Modern Age.
Continue to Bairro Alto and explore a vibrant neighborhood where the atmosphere of the maritime expansion and intellectual movements period comes to life. Here, sailors and boat builders once thronged the streets, contributing to Lisbon’s bustling port activity. See the statue of a prominent intellectual who challenged 17th-century society and learn about his fight against slavery. Inspired by his ideals and the Humanist movement, Portugal issued its first decree condemning slavery in 1761.
Move towards Madragoa, the first European neighborhood entirely inhabited by African people. Here, they practiced their beliefs and traditions, creating a unique memory of integration and cultural blending in Lisbon.
Discover the charming Chapel of São Jerónimo, a hidden gem that exudes historical significance and architectural beauty. Nestled in a serene setting, this chapel offers a tranquil retreat and a glimpse into the past.
Visit the Jeronimos Monastery from the outside and visit the church. Jerónimos Monastery is a symbol of Lisbon’s Golden Age. Marvel at the Manueline architectural style, inspired by sea voyages and the mysticism of the Fifth Empire. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a testament to the city’s rich maritime history. Jerónimos’ Monastery Church - closed on Mondays
In Belém, indulge in the city's most famous sweet treat, the Pastel de Belém. This delicious pastry is a perfect way to savor the flavors of Lisbon while enjoying its historical ambiance.
Conclude your tour by the Tagus River with visits to the Belém Tower (only from outside) and the Monument to the Discoveries. The Belém Tower, a symbol of Lisbon and Portuguese nationality, stands as a sentinel over the city’s maritime past.
The Monument to the Discoveries celebrates the explorers who launched from Lisbon, ushering in the city’s Golden Age.

We really enjoyed our tour with Daniel. It was a perfect overview of Lisbon and even though I have been here several times before, I learned a lot. Daniel made everything interesting and capped it off with wonderful pasteis de Belem!
Daniel , the guide for this Viator tour, was wonderful. His knowledge and the manner in which he imparted his information and insights was a delightful way to learn history. A very worthwhile tour.
Excellent comprehensive tour. The guide,, Diogo, was Very knowledgeable and, for those interested in the sites of Lisbon and the history of Portugal, he is the perfect guide.
Daniel gave my husband and I an absolutely great tour of the historic sites of Lisbon. He has a remarkable grasp of history as well as knowledge of the 'behind the scenes' stories of royal intrigue. It ranged from the great landmarks and sculptures to an inside tour of the Pasteis de Belem (one of my favorite sites) and the history behind the recipe for these great treats. We were both delighteds with the tour and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the history of this fabulous city!
Daniel was very knowledgeable and lead us through a great narrative of Lisbon Golden Age! He accommodated by husband’s limited walking while ensuring he shared all the significance of each aspect of every site visited! He ensured that this private tour was arranged for us to grasp the history of Lisbon! It was a great tour and we highly recommend Daniel as a great guide!
Wonderful tour with an engaging and knowledgeable guide. It was a really good introduction and to a beautiful city.
An in-depth look at the history and politics of the Golden Age, and some of the hidden history of the Sephardic and Moorish people who contributed to Portugal’s greatness. Daniel was an extremely knowledgeable and responsive guide, and went out of his way to provide information, answer questions, and discuss all aspects of Lisbon’s history. I appreciated the opportunity to visit Belem ( and enjoy the famous custard tart from the bakery there) , as well as looking behind the colourful surface of Alfama. I would recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in the politics and history of Portugal, who is looking for more than a glib travelogue
First of all, our guide Daniel was professional, very well informed and knowledgeable, and kind. He answered our specific and detailed questions. Very safe driving. The tour was well crafted, and unlike no other. We highly recommend it.
Booked this online on travelocity and very happy. Shortly after booking I was contacted by Essencia to confirm details. Our tour guide Vasco Loja met us at our hotel promptly at 9 am. Vasco was incredibly informative, funny and willing to answer all our questions. It is mostly a driving tour but we did walk around Alfama for about an hour. The driving allowed us to truly see the highlights, including Belém ( while we toured the monastery Vasco bought us the infamous custard pastries from Pasteis de Belém). I highly recommend this tour company. Great value for the money!
Very entertaining, necessary a little more time, Daniel the guide very attentive and enjoyable in his explanations and the cake of Belen very delicious.
