This was an excellent tour in each respect. Our tour guide, Antonio, was terrific. He was very personable, knowledgeable, and friendly! One couple on our tour had him as a tour guide for a different tour. They intentionally took this tour to have him be their guide again!

Itinerary
Meet your guide in Praça do Comércio, beside the statue of King José I at the centre of the square. Your tour begins in the grandest square in Lisbon — and once its most important. This riverside plaza was the site of the Royal Palace until the catastrophic 1755 earthquake leveled it, reshaping the city's entire history. Stand beside the towering statue of King José I as your guide sets the scene: the earthquake, the tsunami and fires that followed, and how Lisbon rose from the rubble to become the city you're about to explore. It's more than a starting point — it's the story that explains everything else you'll see today, and the perfect first stop to get oriented before venturing into Alfama's maze of narrow streets.
Tucked into a striking medieval tower overlooking the river, this cultural foundation honors Portugal's only Nobel Prize winner in Literature, José Saramago. Your guide shares the story of how a self-taught writer from a poor rural family became one of the most celebrated novelists of the 20th century — and why Lisbon shaped so much of his work. It's a quieter, lesser-known stop that most visitors walk straight past without realizing what's inside, making it one of those "insider" moments that turns a simple walking tour into something more memorable, a SANDEMANs experience!
This open riverside square was once Lisbon's bustling onion market — hence the name — and sat just outside the old city walls. Your guide points out fragments of Lisbon's medieval fortifications still visible nearby, offering a rare physical connection to a city that was largely destroyed and rebuilt centuries ago. Standing here, with the Tagus River on one side and Alfama's hillside rising on the other, you'll start to understand the layout of old Lisbon — how the river, the walls, and the hills shaped daily life for the people who lived here long before it became a postcard destination.
Also known as the Sé de Lisboa, this fortress-like cathedral is the oldest church in the city, built in 1147 — and one of the few major structures to survive the devastating 1755 earthquake largely intact. Its thick Romanesque walls and twin bell towers have witnessed nearly 900 years of Lisbon's history, from Christian reconquest to royal ceremonies. Your guide brings that history to life at the entrance, explaining how the cathedral's survival became a symbol of resilience for a city that had to rebuild almost everything else around it. A striking photo stop and one of Alfama's most iconic landmarks.
Built on the believed birthplace of Lisbon's beloved patron saint, this small but significant church draws locals and visitors alike — especially those hoping for luck in love. St. Anthony is famously known across Portugal as the "matchmaker saint," and June's Saint Anthony's Festival remains one of Lisbon's liveliest traditions, filling Alfama's streets with music, grilled sardines, and paper decorations. Your guide shares the legends and local customs still tied to this figure today, giving you a glimpse of Lisbon's living culture — not just its history — right in the heart of the neighborhood.
One of Lisbon's most photographed viewpoints, this terrace is framed by striking blue-and-white azulejo tile panels depicting historic scenes of the city and the Tagus. From here, the rooftops of Alfama tumble down toward the river in a view that's become iconic on social media — but seeing it in person, with your guide explaining the tiled scenes and the neighborhood spread out below, is a different experience entirely. It's the kind of stop that makes people pull out their phones immediately, and one of the clearest reasons this tour consistently earns rave reviews for its views.
Just a short walk from Santa Luzia, this viewpoint offers an even wider panorama — sweeping views over Alfama's terracotta rooftops, the Tagus River, and São Vicente de Fora church in the distance. Your guide uses this stop to point out landmarks across the skyline and tie together everything you've learned so far about the neighborhood's layout and history. With comfortable seating and one of the best vantage points in the city, it's a natural spot to pause, take photos, and appreciate just how much of Lisbon reveals itself once you're standing above it.
Finish at the foot of Castelo de São Jorge, the Moorish castle crowning Alfama's highest hill. You'll look back over the whole city you've just explored on foot.
Just beyond the eastern edge of Alfama, this imposing white monastery rises above the neighborhood as one of Lisbon's most significant religious landmarks — its twin bell towers and grand façade a striking example of Mannerist architecture that has watched over the city since the 17th century. Your guide pauses here to unpack the layers of history behind its walls: the monastery's dedication to Lisbon's patron saint, the extraordinary collection of blue-and-white azulejo tile panels lining the cloisters, and the royal pantheon of the Braganza dynasty resting within, where many of Portugal's kings and queens are laid to rest. With its peaceful courtyards, sweeping rooftop terrace overlooking the Tagus, and centuries of stories built into every corner, it's a natural place to slow down and take in both the artistry and the quiet grandeur.
Step off the main route and into a preserved slice of everyday Alfama life at this traditional house on Rua dos Cegos. While the miradouros show you Lisbon's skyline, this stop shows you something most visitors never get to see: how families in this working-class neighborhood actually lived for generations, in narrow homes built to withstand cramped hillside plots and centuries of history. Your guide walks you through the layout — tight staircases, shared courtyards, and small rooms that housed large families — explaining how Alfama's residents adapted to earthquake-era rebuilding with practical, humble architecture rather than grandeur. It's an intimate, grounded contrast to the postcard views, and exactly the kind of detail that makes guests feel like they've experienced the real Alfama, not just its landmarks — often cited in reviews as a highlight precisely because it's unexpected.
This stop honors Amália Rodrigues, the legendary "Queen of Fado" whose voice carried Portugal's most soulful music genre to the world stage. Set into the traditional Portuguese cobblestone paving — the same calçada craftsmanship found throughout Lisbon — this tribute marks Alfama's deep connection to Fado, the melancholic, guitar-driven music born in these very streets. Your guide shares Amália's story: a fishmonger's daughter turned international icon, whose songs of saudade (longing) still define the genre decades after her passing. It's a small, poignant pause on the walk — a chance to connect the neighborhood's cobblestones to the music that made it famous worldwide.
Tucked into Largo de São Miguel, a tiny square deep in Alfama's oldest streets, this parish church is one of the neighborhood's most historic — and one of the few buildings in the district with roots stretching back centuries before the 1755 earthquake reshaped the rest of Lisbon. Though modest in size compared to the grand Sé Cathedral, its interior reveals the same craftsmanship that once defined the city's parish churches: gilded woodwork, carved altars, and a sense of intimacy that larger tourist sites simply don't offer. We explain São Miguel's place in Alfama's daily life — a true neighborhood church tucked into one of the district's most atmospheric little squares, still active in the community today rather than preserved purely as a monument. It's a quieter counterpoint to the miradouros and castle, and often the moment we get to show a genuine window into how Alfama has lived, worshipped, and endured for generations.
Your tour concludes at the Museum of Fado, fittingly located in the heart of Alfama — the neighborhood where this soulful musical tradition was born. Dedicated entirely to Fado's history and cultural significance, the museum traces its journey from working-class taverns to a UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage, with exhibits on the Portuguese guitar, legendary performers like Amália Rodrigues, and the themes of saudade — longing and nostalgia — that define the genre. After walking Alfama's streets and hearing its stories firsthand, ending here ties the whole experience together: you leave not just having seen where Fado came from, but understanding why it still resonates so deeply with the Portuguese. We hope this helps offer a memorable, full-circle finish to the tour.

The tour guide was very knowable and was very understanding of our limitations. New the entire area, brought our attention to the small details of the city that most times would go unrecognized.
My parents and I had a wonderful experience during this walking tour with Nuno! We learned so much, we got to ask questions, we were able to personalize parts of the walk, and we got to see so many parts on Alfama that we wouldn’t have known about without the tour. Nuno gave such in depth stories and history, and was so kind and entertaining! We laughed and learned so much with him. And he took great pictures for us. This experience was an amazing one!
Antonio was a sooooopa tour guide....lots of good information about Lisbon...highly recommend....Peter from Boston
The tour with Jimmy of Alfama was unique and really interesting. We walked to hidden gems of the neighborhood and Jimmy explained us the history and anecdotes of the different streets.
Cécilia was a great guide. Before the start of the tour she set the mood by explaining what we will see. She shared her knowledge and emotions elevating the walking tour significantly. Book it and enjoy.
Great tour. Highly recommend it if you're short on time and want a quick overview of Lisbon and the main attractions. Our guide Partick Hughes was very engaging and knowledgeable.
Thank you JIMMY for the perfect introduction to Lisbon! For me a walking tour is when the holiday truly begins. JIMMY made the tour so enjoyable for myself and my family. He had such a cheerful positive energy, gave such great detail and kept us all engaged This of course set the tone for all of us, talking and laughing with each other as we moved from spot to spot. Never hesitating to answer question/ and give great recommendations he really went above to ensure we got the best out of the tour. His balance of humour and sensitivity on certain topics came across so well. You’ll be lucky to have him as your guide and you’ll recognize him by his welcoming smile. Best wishes Marie, Isata (UK) & Sally (USA)
We first did a city centre walking tour with Rita and it was so impressive that we then booked an Alfama one with her the following day. Alfama is such a historic and intriguing area but having the insider knowledge really brought the place to life for us. It felt like Rita gave us a real glimpse into the Alfama of today, and yesteryear. She was such a genuine, engaging guide with a clear love for her city. The walking tours with her were definitely one of our highlights. Also she makes sure everyone keeps up and can manage....an advantage with the hills! Many thanks. Highly recommended.
Rita was a great tour guide with local knowledge and connections. She was well informed on the history of Alfama and Lisbon as well as modern developments in the area. She brought us to a "private" ginjinha bar run by an Alfama local who served us the tastiest ginjinha of our Lisbon stay.
Jaime aka Jimmy , out of five free walking tour I attended, got the second highest tip from me. With him, I felt like I was guided by a friend, a feeling I haven't got in the other four tours. His knowledge and his stories were also very pleasant to hear and almost at the same level as the best tour. I was lucky to have a tour with him and to enjoy a passionate city like Lisbon
We arrived in Lisbon on April 25. On 4/26 we were assigned a walking tour at 2pm with JIMI. We were very lucky to have him as our guide. He took his time as he showed us many of the highlights of Lisbon. He answerd all our questions and directed us to some fine restaurants.
I had mixed feelings about this tour. The Alfama neighbourhood was definitely fascinating to look at, explore and hear about. Something I had some reservations about was a couple of stops we made at some private residences. Both elderly men. One we were told we could sample some Ginjinha from and our donation would help cover his medical expenses. All of our guides during our stay in Lisbon mentioned the poor state of the economy and how people in the Alfama neighourhood in particular had it very tough. We were encouraged to peek inside and see how tiny his kitchen was. He certainly seemed happy, chatty and welcoming but I found it a little confronting as it certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I guess if the money from tourists genuinely does help him it's a good thing, but it did feel a little unethical, kind of like treating impoverished people like animals in a zoo. We made a second stop at another house just to briefly chat to another elderly gentleman who very clearly looked unwell, but again happy enough to see us. Our guide Antonio was very engaging and charming and seemed to have genuine connections/relationships with the men we visited.
Rita gave an amazing walking tour of Alfama. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about Portugal and specifically Alfama.
JIMMY was an awesome tour guide providing us with a thorough history of Lisbon and the culture of the city. We walked away extremely informed and an increase love of the city.
We did the walking tour with Jimmy and it was absolutely wonderful! He was so fun and engaging. He provided an excellent historical perspective of Lisbon and we were able to learn about the most interesting sights in Lisbon.
I can't recommend this tour highly enough! Antonio is an outstanding, engaging and very knowledgeable guide. He brings the whole city alive and has many interesting stories and numerous recommendations. I enjoyed the experience so much, I booked for the city walking tour that he was leading also a brilliant tour with the two and a half hour walk sadly passing far too quickly, no one left the tour and no one wanted it to end!! Thank you Antonio a brilliant ambassador for Lisbon.
Our guide, Bruno, was very knowledgeable and in close relationship with some of the residents in the neighborhood. He knocked on doors, told us local stories and atmosphere, and all there is to know about Alfamasl's history, and future. Highly recommended.
Had an emergency and wanted to reschedule tour for the next day. No one answered the phone or responded to my messages. I won’t use this company again.
Today is our last day in Lisbon. A afternoon tour with Bruno makes us regret that we did not have it on day one.
The guide was very kind and knowlegable in sharing a lot of historical facts and stories. Highly recommended. Wish to enter the Lisbon Cathedral.
Anthony gave my husband and myself a very informative, unique and sometimes funny tour of the real Lisbon. There was a lot of walking uphill but he saved us a climb part of the way by using the lift which helped. He introduced us to 2 locals where one had a local drink to share with us. Not all of the tour was to the tourist areas but also to where the locals hang out. It made the tour somehow more authentic. We enjoyed it a lot.
Great tour and super informative tour guide. The views were also amazing! Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes because there is some up-hill walking.
Before starting a city break, check out these guys for a free tour first! Thank you Antonio Miguel for our fun, informative guided tour! Loved it all. Thank You! We saw parts of the city you would not see on your own. Thank you for the tip to eat at Fabrica Da Nata, Rua Augusta, DELICIOUS!
Bruno shared his insights about Lisbon culture, architecture and people in a very personal way which made the tour more interesting. Best of all, he introduced us to several of his friends along the route and even knocked on doors to give us an insiders view of the culture.
Honest and knowledgeable tour guide. He made very good recommendations regarding places of interest and avoid pitfalls. Thanks.
We truly enjoyed the walk, during which our experienced guide Antonio gave us a lot of historical and cultural information about the Alfama district.
It all started well, but half way through the tour I turned to take a picture and when I turned back the entire group was gone. So I missed part of the tour. I think the tour guide has to make sure every one on the tour is there before moving from one spot to another spot. This was pretty upsetting.
Rita -our guide -was delightful. She obviously knew the area so well and made it live. Amazing area and such fabulous views.
Patrick was a great guide and he showed us places we probably would have not seen without him. Alfama district is definitely worth a tour and learning about the history of this part of Lisbon rounded it up perfectly. Thank you, Patrick!
Our tour guide was Rita and she was really good! So much information and emotions which came from the heart. For me it was a really special tour and brought me closer to Portuguese people and culture. And ofc Rita gave us amazing tips and took as to amazing places (which weren't so touristic ones)- a good reason why to join these kind of tours!
Perfect way to get to know this unique neighborhood. Our tour guide, Bruno, was very passionate about sharing his home country. He’s very knowledgeable about the Alfama area and he made our tour very interesting. He spoke to us about the people who lived there, the history and costumes. We even stopped to try a typical drink from Lisbon. I would recommend the store to anyone interested in learning and visiting Alfama.
This was a great tour that I would definitely recommend! Our guide, Rita, was energetic, enthusiastic, caring, and knowledgeable about the city. She was a great guide and we felt a whole new appreciation for the city and the Alfama neighborhood in particular. We loved the tour!
Antonio, our guide, was superb. He not only knew the buildings and history but perhaps even more interesting he seemed to breath the district itself and knew plenty of the locals. His ability to make his knowledge engaging made the tour very enjoyable. If you want to go on a tour of this area make sure you book with Antonio.
Such a great tour guide but 30 people on the tour was a lot bruno our guide provided great mix of history and contemporary insight. I feel like we could have entered buildings and seen insides of places but the size of the tour limited us and I would have been happy to pay more money for that opportunity
Our guide Cecilia was wonderful! Very informative. The views were spectacular at each vantage point and she even shared her family’s personal history with the country.
Booked the afternoon tour of Alfama got swapped to tour of Belem. Antonio was a super guide, super helpful, as I said to him, he was king amongst guides 😃. Absolutely recommend him and his company if they are all like him.
I really liked Alfama. But there were many things the travel guides got wrong. (1) The hills are not that bad. I'm 71 with bad knees, and I had no problems. Just go slow. (2) The 28 tram is overrated. I would still take it to get to the top (and then walk down), but the trip itself is not nearly as exciting as some travel guides suggest. Maybe take a tuktuk instead. (3) The castle is the highlight. I've been to many castles; it's one of the best. And it offers a wonderful view of the city and the river. (4) The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is worth the climb; the Miradouro da Graca is not. (5) Check to see whether the sites you plan to visit are open on the day you take your walk. About half were closed when we went.
Excellent guide and I learned a lot. He clearly loves what he does. It's a lot of walking and some steep hills so be prepared!
We had a wonderful tour of Alfama with Bruno. The start of our trip was a little messed up thanks to flight issues, so we missed our overview of Lisbon tour, but this tour was a great way to dig deep into Alfama while learning about Lisbon on the whole. Bruno was a wonderful guide who shared interesting stories and information. He was very personable and we enjoyed our time with him. He took us to many areas of Alfama and we saw areas we never would have found on our own. We had 3 teens with us, and the tour appealed to them as well. I highly recommend this tour!
Jaime brought Alfama alive for us with his thorough knowledge of the history and culture of the area that was not destroyed by the famous earthquake. He is a great story teller and able to educate while interjecting humor and fun facts. We loved the stop for Ginjinha, the amazing cherry cordial from the area.
Theresa was an excellent guide who led my husband, daughter and me through the Alfama and essentially the country’s history. She graciously answered all questions. She’s a veritable walking encyclopedia for she could speak about language, poetry, history, cuisine, and the earthquake that devastated Lisbon. The exercise was invigorating and not beyond we senior citizens. Recommended.
Great tour with Anthony!! Friendly, knowledgeable and knowledgeable.cxcccvvvvvb by jhujhhd hi ghh h jeff hh
We took this tour the first day we arrived in Lisbon to get an overview of some of the city. We were fortunate enough to have Jaime as our tour guide. What a treat he was, and an absolutely fantastic tour guide. He was basically a walking encyclopedia of information and had such interesting information about the city of Lisbon, Portuguese history, and interesting facts about the Alfama district. Be prepared to see quaint cafes and bars, beautiful churches, and picturesque alleyways. Our tour was 2 1/2 hours, then he recommended a local bar to try some Vinho Verde at the end of the tour. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to learn more about Lisbon and Portugal history! It was really enjoyable and Jaime was the best!
Had an amazing walking tour with Teresa. She was extremely knowledgeable about Portugal’s history and Lisbon’s beauty. Her presentation was amazing making you feel that you were a part of the history as it happened! Thank you!
Jaime was a great guide. Knowledgeable, fun, loud enough. Not too much walking even though a hood 2.5 hours. Maybe 2 miles total.
Rita was a fantastic guide! She was very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of Alfama. She made the tour extremely interesting and the time went very quickly! Book it, you won’t be disappointed!
The tour around Alfama was amazing. Our guide, Jorge, was excellent and made the tour very informative, enjoyable and had a great sense of humour. We highly recommend this tour and if can get Jorge, then tour are in for a great treat.
excellent tour. the guide was amazing. He knows all the details and answered all questions. I strongly recommend.
No one showed up. I walked around for a half an hour looking for the red shirt and the red umbrella. I tried calling the operator and one of the numbers listed was not a working number. The second number only allowed me to leave a voice message, which no one has returned. I requested a refund but have not received it. Incredibly disappointing. I signed up and received confirmation so I had no reason to believe the tour wasn’t happening.
