Itinerary
A few facts about the town of Évora: it has 55,000 inhabitants; it is more than 2,000 years old; and it is under the designation of UNESCO. Within the walls of the wonderfully preserved town center are ancient Roman temples, medieval cathedrals, and narrow cobblestoned streets.
Begin your day trip with a pickup from your central Lisbon hotel, and then hop inside a comfortable minivan with your private guide. During the hour-long drive, gaze out at the Portuguese countryside and learn about the history and culture of the places you’re about to visit.
Start by visiting the Temple of Diana, the famed Roman temple that was dedicated to Augustus, emperor of Rome, and learn the changes it suffered through time.
Visit the grand Gothic Cathedral, built in the 12th century, and the medieval cloisters. Climb to the roof of the building to get a great view of the town and the surrounding countryside.
Check out the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos) inside the Church of St Francis. As the name suggests, the mysterious chapel is made up of human bones.
Enjoy some free time to explore the streets and city center of Évora, and have lunch in the excellent restaurants available.
Make your final stop of the tour at the Almendres Cromlech, a Neolithic stone circle, which is aligned with the Summer Solstice. Wander around the ancient circle, said to be the largest existing group of structured menhirs in the Iberian Peninsula, and hear how the stones were likely used for sacred rituals.
Return to Lisbon crossing the iconic 25th April Bridge, from where you can see the most amazing vies over Lisbon.

Nuno was so much fun! He was knowledgeable of the Portugal life and history. He was able to recommend places and activities. The sites we went to were great as well. Different part of the country
Our guide Nuno was incredible!! We loved him. He was so knowledgeable and energetic. It was a perfect day!
Our tour was wonderful in every possible way. Our guide was delightful, helpful, very fun, friendly, considerate, knowledgeable and interesting! The day was perfect - perfect weather, a fun group of people on the tour and spectacular and awe-inspiring sights. we enjoyed driving through the Portuguese countryside, learning about cork (and seeing the cork trees some of which had recently been harvested). We loved seeing the Roman temple of Diana and spending time in charming and lovely Evora (which is a walled city). We enjoyed seeing the beautiful medieval cathedrals and exploring the town by wandering through the cobblestone streets. We had time to shop and eat and appreciated the relaxed pace. We also thoroughly enjoyed seeing Almendres Cromlech, a spectacular Neolithic stone circle, and learning about its history. It was AMAZING! One more exceptional thing about our guide. He was instrumental in helping us to transfer from one hotel to another. We greatly appreciated his help and guidance!!! It was a perfect day!
Great day trip! Loved Evora. Nunu, our guide was very knowledgeable, pleasant, and professional. Very comfortable transportation.
The fuide was very fun, extremely informative and entertaining. Learning about cork farming was a treat. He gave as an amazing recommendation to eat in Evora. The standing stones were awe inspiring and humbling. This is a must do excursion when in Portugal.
Excellent trip to Evora and surrounds with group activities and free time. I really enjoyed this trip. Thoroughly recommend. Guide was great.
Great experience, loved our guide. Highly recommend this private tour. But make sure you get a guide.
We had a great tour with our excellent guide Nuno. Our small group consisted of 7 friendly people who were all interested in what we were seeing. We visited the Almendres Cromlech megaliths, cork tree farms, Evora with it's Roman ruins and Sao Francisco church and bone chapel. The small town of Evora was lovely for walking around, shopping, and having lunch. There was a lot of walking but it was easy to keep pace with the guide, so we never felt rushed. Great day.
Enjoyed seeing the monoliths was very interesting as was the Roman ruins in Évora. Tour guide made a good recommendation for lunch.
Our guide Nuno, was wonderful. I learned so much about Portuguese history from him, and he was also a good storyteller. The tour itself was well designed. I had a great time. The pickup and drop off was seamless. I would recommend this for female solo travelers.
Very enjoyable experience. Nuno was an excellent guide who really knew his stuff! We ran into some bad weather and he managed it well, adjusting the schedule slightly to keep us as dry as possible.
Oriana is the best guide we have ever had! She is very knowledgable about the history of the sites we visited and pleasant to be with. She kept an almost constant stream of information going, even pointing out things as we drove. At the end of the trip she left us with great recommendations for restaurants in the area and future trips. Fantastic day!
Our guide (Nuno) was so knowledgeable and intelligent and spoke very clear English. He had plenty of water for us and went above and beyond when it came to our personal requests. He was so funny and personable and remembered our names and even changed the location of our drop off at the end of the day at the last minute per our request. We couldn’t have asked for a better tour guide. Nuno was excellent.
good day. Nunu was a wonderful guide. very knowledgeable. only drawback for me was the very bumpy back roads to get to the megaliths.
Our tour guide, Diego was so knowledgeable about Évora and its history. During the tour, my nickname for Diego was Professor Diego. I felt as if Diego was a history professor and a foodie all wrapped up in one. My husband and I learned so much about this trip and we loved it very much. After the this tour, we followed up with Diego’s recommendations. This was a private tour but definitely worth it!
I ran out of things to do in Lisbon so last second booked this and Oriana was a great guide! It is a little pricey, but I wouldn’t haven’t been able to reach these places without renting a car so it’s worth it if you don’t want to drive.
Diogo, our guide, was very knowledgeable and had a wonderful droll sense of humor. He is fascinated by birds, and we had fun scoping out stork nests on the way to Évora. He gave great background on both the megalithic site and the town of Évora. He was also open to our questions about other part of Portugal. On the way to the cromlech, over very bumpy dirt roads, he displayed excellent driving skills. We came upon a team harvesting cork (unusual for June), and Diogo enthusiastically filled us in on the techniques involved. We enjoyed our time in Évora very much. Keep in mind that many of the restaurants have very slow service; we would like to have spent more of our lunch break walking around the sites!
Renaldo was a fabulous informative and friendly guide, easily one of best tours we’ve ever done. The history of Évora is amazing and easily accessible from Lisbon, well worth a visit.
Nino (Ze) was awesome tour person. Very knowledgeable and personable. He was always communicating with us and told us a lot about our tour. We do another one with him!! Thank you
This is a great tour. Not as busy as some of the others and was Very enjoyable seeing the countryside and interesting history of Evora. Our tour guide Nunadiaz was fabulous and very passionate about His job. He was very knowledgeable and a great guy. Recommended
It was an amazing experience. Our guide Nuno was amazing and very knowledgeable and helpful. Thank you.
Really lovely and relaxed day exploring Evora. Had door to door service which was amazing and so welcomed. Great sights in Evora and the countryside, the tour was relaxed, comfortable and friendly
We had a fabulous tour and learned so much from our knowledgeable guide, Nuno. The megaliths are impressive, and we enjoyed getting up close and having a hands on experience there. The city of Evora is lovely and historic. Nuno guided us along as we walked through the city, and recommend a great local restaurant for lunch. The Chapel of Bones was a very interesting site. It was a full and fun day with a great and personable guide
The megaliticos were underwhelming at best! Our guide was not a real/professional guide. Typically, guides have a narrative for the tour, which he did not. Often he could not describe scenes or history of what we were looking at. He himself confessed that he had another job and he doesn’t do the tour too often! He would drop us off at sites and then pick us up. He did not give a talking tour of anything!
Wonderful experience and a very informative tour guide. Évora was beautiful and the chapel of the bones was very unique and fascinating to see. It’s a full day tour over 8 hours but well worth it. Highly recommended!
Our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and personable. The tour size, with 8 tourists plus the guide was a good size and the van very comfortable even in the rear seat. We highly recommend oit
This was overall a great tour and I enjoyed it very much. Evora is an interesting town with good sites and the bone chapel is amazing! Guide was very informative. We were unable to visit the main site of almendres and instead visited a much smaller site, which was fine, but since apparently the road is frequently impassable, maybe they should just say theyre going good somewhere else instead. It would also be nice to have a bit more free time in evora, as you only get 1.5 hours and need to have lunch during that time. I was left running through the cathedral because I had wanted to visit it. Suggestion would be to have a main meeting location for everyone on the tour so you actually leave lisbon at 9 instead of 10 after the pickups. But overall I highly recommend the tour.
I highly recomend this tour. We had an informative and fun day with Nuno as our guide. The stops that we made were very good. After we returned to our hotel, I realized that I had left my sweater in the tour vehicle. I contacted Nuno to ask how I might get it back. He said he could drop it at our hotel the next day. We had one problem. We were to leave for Porto at nine the next morning. He said that he could, probably, get it to me before nine... And he did!! Way above and beyond. Thanks Nuno.
Enjoyed this tour immensely. Great tour guide.
Unfortunately can’t remember guides name but was a driver from Lisbon out The guide was fantastic funny and full of information He showed us lots of places and told us all about the history It was a small tour and work recommend them over larger tours /buses more personal service Would 100% recommend
Very interesting trip. Our tour guide, Orania, was very polite and pleasant. She gave us a lot of interesting information about all the places we visited and answered all our questions willingly.
Fabulous trip. Our guide, Nuno was so knowledgeable about the country and area. He is passionate about his country. He was flexible and willing to change our plans. I would highly recommend him and the company.
Nuno was an excellent tour guide. He was energetic, fun, personable, and incredibly knowledgeable not only about our destinations, but also about Lisbon itself. He showed us different neighbourhoods, shared interesting local history and culture, and took us to places that felt more off the beaten path rather than just the typical tourist stops. His enthusiasm made the day even more enjoyable. I would absolutely recommend a tour with Nuno.
We had a fantastic time learning the history of Portugal with our guide, Diego! We visited Neolithic sites as well as Roman ruins. Had a lovely lunch in Evora. And the bone chapel was amazing! I highly recommend this tour!
Our guide Nuno was entertaining and informative. We spent a lovely day viewing sights like the Roman temple and megaliths. A bonus was seeing nesting white storks and learning about cork harvesting!
Fantastic experience! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and kind. So happy we decided to book this excursion!
Wonderful tour - our tour guide was friendly warm and knowledgeable and was flexible. We highly recommend her.
Great tour! Diogo was a friendly, knowledgeable and flexible guide. This is a good way to get a window to the past and see it from different perspectives.
Interesting tour of sites less seen by American tourists. Megaliths and cork trees particularly fun to learn about. If you enjoyed Stonehenge- like a mini version- you’ll enjoy this tour too. Tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Very nice being picked up in at our hotel. Tour began and ended on time.
The tour was fantasti. We learned a great deal, saw many interesting historical sites, and saw beautiful countryside. We loved the 17k Vasco da Gama bridge. Oriana was a super great guide! She is very knowledgeable, shared wonderful information, and answered all of our questions. EXCELLENT TOUR!
Wonderful itinerary with a great leader, Orianna. So much to see!
Great tour and good overview of a unique part of Portugal. Worth a day to learn the ancient history. Easy day with lots of free time to explore too.
Absolutely loved the interesting stops, the history and our local guide was extremely thoughtful and knowledgeable…
A great pace for a day filled with stories and getting to know Evora and the history of the area. Nuno picked us up in the morning and we spent the day out of Lisbon getting to know more about the archeology and history of the area. We were recommended great places for lunch to choose from and by the end of the day learned so much about the lands, people, and food of the area. Was a highlight of our stay!
Good tour with interesting insights into the area from the guide. Dropping to 3 stars as the percent of time traveling/eating lunch vs actually on-site learning was not worth it for us. Additionally, beware of pick up locations - even though our hotel was listed we needed to travel to another site.
Such an amazing experience. Nuno was a fabulous tour guide and so informative! The megaliths were captivating and Evora is beautiful and charming. The Chapel of Bones was a great end to the tour but learning about the history and seeing the ancient Roman temple and aqueducts was inspiring. Highly recommend this tour!
Although I was picked up late because of police activity unrelated to my tour, it was a complete day - some 9 hours long. You will never find a more enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide than ours. The megaliths are unfathomable. They are located in the middle of a beautiful farm of beef cattle, black pigs and cork oak trees. The walled city of Evora is charming. The climb up the cathedral is not for the faint of heart but the view is impressive - from the artwork of the three towers to the view of the surroundings.
Great excursion to get out of Lisbon for a day and see the country side and see some other historical sites in Portugal. Our guide Nuno is excellent. He is professional, knowledgeable, friendly and fun.
Diego was an excellent guide (and driver). We learned so much about the countryside, megaliths, and the town of Évora. Our fellow travelers were also delightful. This was a highlight of our visit to Portugal.
