Excellent outing. Experienced guide who walked us through the historical alleys of Lisbon while getting us so exciting for the upcoming meal that was absolutely delicious! Such a unique experience for a fish lover and foodie! Restaurant had excellent service, very friendly staff that communicated well with our excellent guide.

Much fun experience with a great host. Really learned a lot about the history of Lisbon during Roman times and how they made and persevered food using Garum. Very tasty and interesting foods using this ancient preservative to enhance the flavors. Would definitely recommend for couples and foodies!
What an incredibly interesting, fun and delicious evening. Marina was an exceptional guide and really great company. She was so knowledgable about the history of garum and was able to share that with us. The museum that we went to before our dinner was fascinating and we were happy to be exploring a different part of Lisbon. The food: One item was more delicious than the next! We ate fish prepared in ways we had never seen and probably would never have access to again. The restaurant we were at was beautiful and the manager incredibly friendly. If you are looking for an adventure this definitely fits the bill!
Marina was so kind, friendly, and funny. We had such a truly special and intimate experience learning about the garum history around Lisbon. Marina, thank you for your hospitality. It felt like we were touring with a close friend. If you want something truly memorable and small, book this. Some of the best and most creative food we had on our trip.
This experience was outstanding, and I really couldn't recommend it more. Marina was so knowledgable and kind, and the food was unique and delicious. If you like fish, you have to try here!
I went on this wonderful tour after participating in a conference in this beautiful and interesting city. It was a wonderful way to get a sense of the deep history and culture of the place, learn about sustainable seafood and 'whole fish' cooking, and of course to enjoy delicious food. The guide was knowledgeable, interesting and generous with their time and thoughts, and it was great group of people also. Highly recommended.
This was simply an amazing food tour. Before we sat down to an incredible meal, our awesome guide Marina showed us around the historic Alfama Quarter. She had a wonderful breadth of knowledge about the history throughout the Greek, Roman, and Moorish periods. And rather than just spouting off esoteric facts, she always brought things back to some degree of modern relevance, which allowed us to really appreciate both what happened in the past and also how it applies to the present. Before the tour, I didn't even know what Garum was, and now I feel like a rather well-educated Garum amateur. The fact that it was such a big part of cuisine back in Roman days and now has been rediscovered made the meal all the richer. Cannot encourage or endorse this tour too strongly.
This walking food tour through Alfama was such a fun experience. We loved exploring the neighborhood on foot and learning about the history & local food scene along the way. Tasting five different garum sauces was really interesting and something we’d never done before, and the tour finished with an amazing five-course meal. Our guide, Livia, was great—super nice, well spoken, and very personable. She made the whole experience feel easygoing and enjoyable. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a laid-back way to eat well and explore Lisbon.
I had read a little about the Roman production of garum years ago in a book titled "Salt", but never expected to one day be able to see and even touch some of the original stone basins in which it had been produced nearly two thousand years ago! The walking tour provided that experience, retracing the path from where fish arrived at the docks to where they were finally processed. After the walk, we all sat together and enjoyed a delicious, multi-course seafood dinner with nicely paired wines and a variety of garums incorporated into the meals. I was so full at the end! Save your appetite for this experience. Our guide, Marina, was very friendly, knowledgable, and made us feel more like friends than tourists. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Lisbon who likes a nice walk, is interested in history, and loves seafood!
Fantastic tour with access to commercial buildings in Alfama with ruins right in their lobbies! Then on to a delightful food adventure of Garum. Well worth the money as the food was plentiful and excellent quality, with wines, sparkling water and coffee at the end.
Such a pleasure to experience more of Portugal's rich culinary history than every other stock standard tour (no pastel de nata here! But still an amazing egg dessert that I forgot the name for heehee). The atmosphere Marina created was like sitting down with old friends for dinner, chat, a glass or 2 of wine and tasting things I'd never heard of but would totally eat again. Umami tour is an apt name with power houses of flavor in every course. There was a lot of food... More than I could finish. Not too much walking which was great as we visited during the heat wave.
The power went out all over Spain and Portugal the day we were scheduled for the Food Tour. However, since our food tour focused on raw fish Oh! My Cod Tours was able to run the tour anyway and it was fabulous! We did a walking tour and then had all of our meals at one restaurant. The food was amazing and Livia, our guide, was exceptional. I learned all about Garum and brought some home. I had tuna tartar for the first time and it was life changing, so good:) I highly recommend this company and this tour.
Unique, educational, and one of my favorite Lisbon experiences. Learning about Garum was very interesting. The cured fish was amazing. Definitely for fish lovers.
We chose this tour because it was celiac friendly, but I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys fine cuisine and fish. Livia, our tour guide was delightful and a passionate chef herself. Her knowledge about Lisbon, food, and wine really enhanced the evening. You will experience new tastes and texture combinations that will truly delight. Need I say more… I highly recommend this food experience.
Best tour - food and drinks delicious, learned so much, great host! Marina was the best! Would highly recommend doing at the beginning of your stay because they also give great recommendations for other night out!
Our host, Livia, was so welcoming and immediately put us all in a good mood. She had a great enthusiasm for Lisbon, it history, culture, and local fish heritage. She truly loved sharing all her knowledge with us. If you take the Garum & Seafood Tour, be prepared to eat a lot of fish (I couldn't finish it all, despite how good it all was) and be sure to leave room for the amazing dessert!
This tour exceeded my expectations. Great guide, interesting food stops and very organized. During this gentle walk was a great time for the guide to answer individual questions. I thought 4 hours would be too long, but plenty of time sitting down eating and getting information from the guide. Also, you won’t leave hungry.
Wonderful experience with Silvia. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Portuguese food and its history. Highly recommend her tours!
The Umami & Garum Lisbon Food Tour with Livia was incredible. First a walk through history then an exquisite taste adventure. Don't miss this unique experience when you are in Lisbon.
Always try everything at least once. When you hear the history of the food and where it came from it seems to taste that much better.
Livia from oh my cod tour was awesome. We throughly enjoyed the tour, the food and the history lesson. Her knowledge of multiple cultural influences on Portugal ‘s food landscape was spot on. She made everyone feel like a family for the four hour tour. Her local recommendations for our stay in Portugal were an A+. A luncheonette that was 95% locals and the best Fado dinner experience were highlights of our vacation. Do this tour and ask for Livia.
This was by far one of our favorite experiences we had in Portugal. I would describe this more of an "experience" than a tour. It starts with a small walking tour through Alfama, taking in local history and Roman ruins, and learning about ancient fish preservation. This historic tour concludes with a specialty prepared food spread at a local restaurant, that includes all sorts of unique, creative, sustainable and delicious ways to prepare (and preserve!) fish. Combined with the incredibly umami created by the Garum (going in blind about what Garum is, is totally fine). This tour is less about seeing lots of different sights/sounds, but more about the food, tastes and ancient culture. I can not recommend Sylvia, or any of the Oh! My Cod tour guides enough. We loved this so much, we booked their more typical tour the next day. Also had an amazing time, but the flavors and history with the Garum tour were by far our favorite. It was special to be able to sit down and share a meal with Sylvia. Obrigado!!
It was a totally new experience for me. I decided to do this tour solo, thinking that I know most of the city by now, and what was my surprise - I didn't expect to discover such an interesting and incredible story behind the walls of an old Lisbon that Silvia told us. I am a big fan of fish and sushi, so it was a real pleasure to learn about the production of umami and garum and to taste it afterwards. The feast of several dishes, each paired with an exquisite wine, was really something to remember. Afterwards, we were able to learn some interesting facts about all kinds of fish and their specialties, as well as enjoy some good conversation with other travelers. The tour itself wasn't tiring, so we didn't have to run anywhere, just walk moderately. I highly recommend this tour as it is unique and one of a kind, you definitely won't see anything similar in Lisbon and who knows if even in Europe! :)
My friend and I were looking for a food tour in Lisbon and this one caught our eye because we hadn't seen anything like it before. It is different from standard multiple-stop tours in that you are seated in one restaurant having multiple courses after a short walk around town that offers some historical background. All of the food was delicious and beautifully presented (it looked like art) and learning about the history of garum in Portugal was so interesting. You do not have to be a fish lover; I think one of the things that the tour tries to illustrate is how many ways fish can be prepared and preserved and how it can take on different flavors. There were multiple varieties of fish I had never tried before. You DO need to appreciate umami flavors, but hopefully that would be obvious from the name of the tour. Afterwards, Silvia sent us an email packed with recommendations for other places to eat and things to do. I tried two of the restaurants she suggested and they were wonderful. Thank you - I will be back for more the next time I'm in Portugal!
Amazing trip with the knowledgeable hostess of Oh my Cod (my 3 rd trip). I have gone in the 17 tastings tour which is exceptional and thought it was time to try the Umami tour. It was an exceptional evening. Don’t be scare off by the thought of fish and fish oil. The food was outstanding and you won’t be able to try the dishes anywhere else. As with their other tours, the Umami tour seamlessly blends history, eating and drinking - so that the tour is so much more than just food. Take a chance! You’ll love it!
Great unique food with a fun and knowledgeable host. Some of the best food we had in Portugal! Definitely recommended. We went in June 2021.
This is a “can’t miss” unique experience for foodies/gourmands in Lisbon. The Umami and Garum Tour is not one of the typical traveling feast - style walking food tours that checks the boxes of all the classic petiscos. I have nothing against those, but this is a delicious deep dive into the history and flavors of cured and fermented fish in Portugal. This is a curated experience from an expert guide that you won’t find in a book or otherwise stumble upon - well worth the tour!
This tour was a highlight of our trip. We are a family of very serious foodies and this tour was interesting, delicious, well - planned and one of the best meals we had on our trip to Portugal. Even in the rain and with a grumpy toddler we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a more unique way to experience Portuguese food!
Great experience with Silvia. The walking tour was informational and interesting and the food was delicious. The history of preserved fish made everything even more delightful. We also made some friends with the others we were with! Highly recommend
We had this tour as two couples and we all are good food lovers. We initially wanted to have sustainable food tour but it was all sold out. This tour was strongly recommended by the tour company and it was definitely interesting knowing Garum (fish sauce) production process and experience. Then we had a five courses of menu at a nice restaurant “can the can” out of their regular menu which was also very good and interesting especially the first dish! But in general the portion was too big and having only fish for 3 course in a row was not easy. I guess my expectation was a bit different from what the tour would offer. It would’ve been nicer if we went to another place and try non-fish food 😂 But our tour guide Sílvia was a sweet lady who guided us with a good explanation and she sent us a follow up email with her suggestions in Lisbon and that was very helpful.
In November 2021, Smithsonian Magazine published an article titled, "Culinary Detectives Try to Recover the Formula for a Deliciously Fishy Roman Condiment." The article follows scientists deciphering a recipe for garum from the charred paste of fish bones recovered from Pompeii (using a gas chromatograph and a scanning electron microscope, no less). Well, it turns out the Roman Empire's largest production facility for garum was in Lusitania (now Portugal). In 2021, a Lisbon chef and restauranteur partnered with archeologists and fermented garum on the site of Tróia’s ruins (near Lisbon) for the first time in 1600 years. If you've read this far, you're probably the perfect candidate for this experience. Host Sílvia partnered with these very restaurant guys to create the tastings for her Umami & Garum Lisbon Food Tour. You'll visit their restaurant and consume off-menu dishes that showcase both cured fish and the pungent sauce. It's a curated experience with an expert and personable guide. Be sure to drink plenty of water--and enjoy!
This tour was really a tour and an UMAMI experience! Incredibly delicious! And not only because Silvia, our guide, was great introducing us to a bit of the history of Lisbon, but especially about the Garum fish sauce and its production. We met in the Alfama neighborhood and walked through it to the Plaza do Comércio, where the Baixa is located. When we arrived at the restaurant we started the experience by tasting butter from the Azores with curated fish eggs (bottarga). It was really a fantastic experience to taste not only the garum, the fish sauce, which the Romans had already produced a long time ago, as Silvia explained to us, but also the ripe dry fish and which, in my opinion, can be even better than the taste of meat!!! We really had a Umami experience. Because we tasted many good local fish and prepared by an excellent chef! We also had an excellent wineparing, because we combined the food with white and red wine from Dão, a Portuguese wine region. The wine was very complex and balanced with the salty, oily and taste of the food. At the end of the meal, we had a dessert called Abade de Priscos, which was a delicious dessert! I could really have 10 of it (haha) because it was so good! Definitely recommend this tour for those who appreciate pleasant, good and surprising experiences! You're gonna love it!
A food tour that is worth every spoon! Silvia is a great hostess and a true foodie, with a deep knowledge of the various themes. The different dishes we tried had unique flavors I had never experienced before. It is undoubtedly a unique experience, not to be missed.
