The Chafariz de El-Rei, which was probably the first public fountain in the city of Lisbon, was built in the 13th century, taking advantage of the excellent waters of the Alfama hillside.
It was once called Chafariz dos Cavalos (Horse Fountain), and it's Alfama's central plaza. Its current name comes from the fact that it is located within the walls of the Fernandina wall.
Next to the ancient wall, this is where memories of the old Alfama still linger.
Yet another special place in Alfama where we sit to listen to stories that cross culture and ancient habits.
This beautiful church and square is one of the main spots where the famous Popular Saints Festivities take place. A place of many stories and tales.
One of Lisbon's most iconic murals by the hand of Nuno Saraiva.
Depending on the pace, we will go inside the mazy Alfama and reach the Church of Santo Estêvão Viewpoint.
This viewpoint is one enormous balcony overlooking all of Alfama. Its panoramic view has illustrated countless postcards.
Yet another iconic spot in Lisbon, this terrace is as romantic as it gets.
Lisbon Cathedral, better known as Sé de Lisboa, is the oldest and most important church in the city. Its construction dates back to the 12th century. We won't be going inside the Cathedral (cost of entry 5€).
What better place to celebrate Lisbon than in front of the Church of Santo António, Lisbon's most cherished saint.

Great tour with Myriam! Great views and city history
We toured the Alfama old town, Lisboa this afternoon with Andy. Andy was a great guide; really lovely guy, super knowledgeable about Portugese history, and full of good local recommendations. We had a great time and would recommend the tour to others.
Great experience, lots of fun, knowledgeable your guide. In a few hours, you see a lot of the old part of the city. You learn the hisgory as well as modern day issues.
Odelia was a fantastic guide she was so fun and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend taking her tour of such an interesting and beautiful part of Lisbon.
Odelia was a lovely tour guide! She was very considerate and knowledgeable. Alfama is a beautiful neighbourhood with great viewpoints.
Cláudia was an amazing guide! Super knowledgeable, funny, honest and passionate about Portugal and its people. She shared interesting stories, legends and showed us a whimsical part of Lisbon. She kept us entertained and made us feel welcome. Highly recommend her!!
Mixed feelings about this one’s I like the tour overall and the knowledge/information throughout. But it as not as 100% advertised, the tour guide took liberties to tweak it in her style. Maybe she has reasons but I signed up based on what’s advertised at Viator, so felt slightly mislead.
Cláudia was an amazing guide. Super knowledgeable, funny and very passionate about Portugal and its people. She shared interesting facts, stories and legends about the neighborhood and the city. She kept us 100% entertained and made us feel welcome. Absolutely recommend the tour with her!
I had an excellent time with Elena, she transferred her passion, knew her history, and had great recommendations.
Very interesting tour where the focus lies on learning about and understanding Portuguese culture. Margarita is a very good story teller and makes it entertaining throughout.
I had a fantastic tour with Margarita Guia ! We went through the little street of Alfama and she provided a lot of useful explanations and little stories on the history and monuments, in a simple and funny way! It was unforgettable and I strongly recommand Margarita for the tours.
Thank you very much to Odelia, our guide that made this tour super lovely with lots of information. I really enjoyed it and warmly recommend it. It allowed me to visit Lisboa a bit deeper and get to know placed I couldn't have found on my own. The group was also really lovely. Thanks Odelia!
Odelia explained everything very well and she was very friendly and kind. Very good pace.
Fernanda was incredibly knowledgeable, full of great energy, and made the whole experience so enjoyable. She did a phenomenal job bringing Alfama to life with fascinating stories, local insights, and a wonderful personality. We had such a great time and would definitely join Fernanda again on our next visit to Lisbon. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fernando was very friendly and made us all feel at ease. She was good fun and very knowledgeable.
Nessim was an excellent guide for our Alfama walking tour. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and explained the history and culture of the neighborhood in a way that was both informative and easy to follow. He struck a great balance between historical facts, local stories, and practical tips, making the tour enjoyable from start to finish. His enthusiasm for Lisbon was contagious, and he was happy to answer questions throughout the tour. I learned a lot and came away with a much deeper appreciation for Alfama. I would highly recommend this tour with Nessim to anyone visiting Lisbon!
We had such an amazing tour with Belina. Such a knowledgeable and great storyteller. We’ve seen many beautiful places and heard so many stories. Couldn’t recommend more, Belina 100 stars 🌟
Belen was amazing, i loved the way she would tell stories and her dynamic way of being. Would deffinetly recommend!
Belen was the best tour guide! She led us on a small group tour that covered so much more than we expected— the back streets of Alfama, the lookout points and churches, the old Moorish walls—! Also, she was extremely knowledgeable about Portuguese history and super passionate about Alfama— especially because it’s her own area! Certainly recommended. Pro tip: bring 1,50 E for the ginjinha shot in a chocolate cup by Alice Pessoa, a local senior citizen selling these at her front door!
It was super entertaining, very informative, my tour guide Miriam was amazing. Had a great time!
Really worthy! And the guide, Odelia, 100% recommend.
I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience on Odelia’s tour of Alfama. She’s very knowledgeable about Lisbon and brought Alfama’s history to life. I recommend her tour enthusiastically.
The walking tour of Alfama was lovely and very enjoyable. The tour is about two hours and covers much of the district. Our guide, Miriam, spoke excellent English and clearly knew the Alfama and the people who lived there. She clearly enjoyed sharing the neighborhood with us. She was also kind enough to recommend several good restaurants for later dining, and some other places to see in the city. I wholly recommend this tour for newcomers to Lisbon. I would warn visitors that there are a lot of stairs, so be prepared to do some walking and climbing. You should also bring some water, but if you forget, there is at least one place where you can get some.
Miriam was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and provided in depth information. She also looked after us carefully while we climbed the hills.
Aracely was incredible. I was glad we were a small group, so we had good time to elaborate on our questions. Aracely has a lot of information, and the stories she told us about the history of the area were right on point. She kept our interest 100% of the time. I’m grateful she was my guide for that morning. I have now a few places I will go back to, because her information and interaction made me piqued my interest. Thank you, Aracely, you did an incredible job.
Miriam lead us through the storied, lively quarter of Lisbons Alfama on a fun tour not only through history, but also the people, stories, and culture that make the quarter special. Miriam had the answers to all of our questions and more, showing us local art and local artists, both of the visual and culinary persuasion. A 1.5h tour through a lovely, lived in maze, with the only guide Id want to follow in and back out.
It was an amazing tour with Odelia! Couldn’t have asked for a better tour guide. She knew all the answers to our questions, showed us hidden gems and even gave us a pdf she had made of great places to visit. The tour lasted 2.5 hours and went ahead even though there was just two of us! Would highly recommend
We had a wonderful tour with Odelia in Lisbon! She guided us through the beautiful Alfama district and shared many interesting stories about the history of Lisbon, making the city come alive for us. Odelia was knowledgeable, engaging, and very friendly throughout the tour. She also showed us some fantastic photo spots with amazing views that we would never have found on our own. The tour was informative, relaxed, and enjoyable from start to finish. We highly recommend Odelia to anyone who wants to discover Lisbon in an authentic and memorable way. Thank you for a great experience!
The tour was very interesting, I loved getting to know more about the city. Also the tour guide, Belen, was very nice and very clear. She even show me later how to get home. I really recommend it
Miriam was a superb guide, with a wealth of knowledge. Her tour was significantly more interesting and more comprehensive than others we have had with Take Lisboa.
Miriam was very knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. She offered many tidbits of history and context behind local culture and great recommendations for local food. Gave lots of context to life in Alfama.
We did the Alfama tour with Belen as our guide. She was amazing. Very informative and professional.
Meeting on the square Magarita was very kind and asked all our names. During the walk she shared a lot of information on the city monuments but als in history in a whole. Next to that telling about the do’s and don’t s in Lisbon. At the end remembering all the participant names we left knowing a lot of the history and gaining a lot of tips for the coming days. Thanks
Your with Belen was wonderful! She had great stories and you can feel her love for the city
Super Myriam. Bravo! It was amazing
Walking through the alfama old town with frequent stops. Claudia was a super friendly knowledgeable and fun tour guide. Thank you for teaching us about Lisbon’s culture and legends!
This walking tour was a great way to learn about Alfama! Fernanda was so passionate about Portuguese culture and history, it made it such an interactive experience! She shared lots of tips and places to eat along the way.
Good and informative. Very pleasant.
Both my wife and I were blown away by our tour guide knowledge of dates and events which has made Lisban the city that it is along with her extensive knowledge of food and wines. Also the great information of the best way to travel while we are visiting your lovely country in the city of Lisbon. I will give our tour guide 12 out of 10 if I could.
Just took the Alfalma walking tour with Fernanda. What a great experience! She was so full of energy and abound with a ton of interesting stories. Highly recommend!
A great trip with Margrita. She is one of the best tour guides
I learned more about Lisbon in one afternoon than I have in a lifetime! Belen the guide is smart, enthusiastic and fun. GREAT introduction to the city!
Our tour guide Odelia was thoughtful, creative, and extremely knowledgable. She allowed time for exploring and introduced us to some of the most unique aspects of the Alfama. One of the best walking tours we've ever taken.
My tour guide Cecilia and I had a wonderful private time walking through Alfama and talking about its history. I did not mind being alone with her as she is a great conversation, but it's a shame not more people are interested in this specific tour in Lisbon. Alfama is so beautiful and full of secrets and now I love it even more after Cecilia has taught me so much. She is smart, insightful and full of knowledge. The places she took me bear much meaning, if only in a small cobblestone in the street. And have I mentioned she has a voice of an angel? And if you behave well she will sing fado to you, as she is also a skilled singer!
Fantastic experience! Natalia is the best!
Amazing tour with Margareta. Many inside tips and stories along with hidden gems
Cecília is so friendly and knowledgeable about Alfama that I really enjoyed the tour and learned a lot☺️local history, festival, homemade Ginjiha, beautiful fado…This is definitely the highlight of my stay in Lisbon.
