It wasn't clear when I arrived that one needed a special sticker for the English tour. I went to the meeting place, but as some of us didn't have the sticker, we had to go back to the office to get a sticker. Fortunately for me, there was only one left, and as i was traveling solo, I was able to go on the guided tour which was a good use of my time as it greatly enhanced the visit.

Very interesting to visit with great views. Well laid out and easy to walk around the venue.
Awesome guide, very informative !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’ll need about 2 hours to experience the castle and views. Wear flats!
A small castle, but worth the trip for the views and location in the old town. Use the lift located in the supermarket in Rua Da Madalena, it’s free, then walk back down the windy cobbled lanes.
We had the privilege of joining our tour guide Rui for a wonderful journey through the history and stories of the various interesting sites that we saw. Rui was one the most professional, knowledgeable and interesting tour guides we have ever experienced. His passion for history came through over the course of the tour. His knowledge was deep as there was no question he couldn’t answer eloquently. He expertly guided us through the itinerary and was always made sure we were comfortable and safe. Highly recommend.
Located on the top of Lisbon's highest hill, this castle offers you a breathtaking view of the city. Of course the castle itself and its surrounding area are very rich in history ... excavations of ancient settlements, the well-preserved medieval walls, the museum, etc. ... but I must admit that it's really the view of the city from the top that impressed me. I also loved the peacocks and the peahens that roamed around freely in its gardens. To reach the place you can either walk uphill (which is quite challenging), or take a bus from Figueira Square, or take the famous yellow-colored tram 28 from Martim Moniz Square. Any of these options offers you a chance to see Lisbon's interesting narrow streets, colorful houses, etc.
My wife and I took the Alfama & Castle St. George Skip-the-Line Tour on May 22nd, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Lisbon. The tour was exceptionally well organized, and skipping the long entrance lines at St. George Castle made the experience even more enjoyable and stress-free. What truly made this tour outstanding was our guide, Rui. He was knowledgeable, professional, personable, and clearly passionate about Lisbon’s history and culture. Rui brought the Alfama district to life with fascinating stories, historical insight, and local details we never would have discovered on our own. He balanced history, architecture, culture, and humor perfectly throughout the tour. Walking through the narrow streets of Alfama, exploring hidden viewpoints, and then visiting St. George Castle with the incredible panoramic views over Lisbon was unforgettable. Rui also took the time to answer questions, provide restaurant recommendations, and make everyone feel welcomed and engaged. If you are visiting Lisbon and want a deeper understanding of the city while avoiding the long castle lines, I highly recommend this tour — and especially Rui as your guide. Excellent experience from start to finish.
Rui was an excellent tour guide. He let us set the pace and tailored the tour to our interests.
Rui was an amazing guide, historian and took excellent care of us. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You don’t want to miss this experience.
Rui was very knowledgeable of Alfama. We told him we had tickets to see the Cathedral and he reshaped the tour so that we ended near the Cathedral. He also recommended a great restaurant for lunch. Thanks Rui for a great tour
My tour “guide” Fasil prepared an excellent self guided tour of the grounds and Castle. I entered on a skip the line ticket and really enjoyed the detail of the self guided tour. My only issue was self induced - my iPhone ran out of power so keep your phone charged! This is a very worthwhile site to visit with great views of the river and city
Great tour with a knowledgeable and engaging tour guide. He was so responsive to our questions. He allowed for photos, a break and a snack time. Perfect pace for us. We loved all the historical, educational insights. We definitely recommend this tour.
Our guide was Andriy Voyevoda, who sent a message ahead of the date of our tour with detailed instructions about the meeting location, contact information and a photo so we could recognize him. We were the only two on the tour so we had a personalized experience. The tour started in the square outside the Church of St. Anthony and then we went inside the church. Andriy’s narrative and depth of knowledge about every place we stopped was exceptional. We visited a number of interesting locations in the Alfama neighborhood, including the Se Cathedral, the ruins of the Roman theater, and an overlook of the harbor where we stopped for a break with coffee at a little cafe there. We continued to hear about the history of the location as we made our way up to the castle. We had the Lisboa card so Andriy handled our entrance to the castle and grounds for free. Once inside the castle grounds, we had a fascinating tour of all the locations along with a narrative of the ways that castles were defended and how attackers could succeed in taking back a castle that was held by enemies. The tour was listed as lasting 3 hours, but Andriy stayed with us for an extra 40 minutes as we asked questions and learned about the history of the place. He pointed out the castle museum and explained how to get back to the starting point before taking his leave. This tour far exceeded our expectations in so many ways. Andriy provided a wealth of knowledge, anecdotes, geographical insights, religious and historical references and so much more. He was most considerate, pointing out where we needed to watch our step, asking about whether we needed a break, etc. Simply superb.
Fascinating tour of Alfama & St George’s Castle by one of the most knowledgeable tour guides we’ve encountered in years of travel. If you can request Rui Fernandes who is obviously passionate about his subject. Beautiful views from St Anthony’s Church, as well as Lisbon Cathedral
Andriy was one of the best tour guides we have ever had in Europe. The tour required a lot of walking, especially uphill walking, but Andriy was very patient and helpful. He went at our pace. His knowledge of Lisbon history was excellent.
Great tour! Andriy was an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable, friendly, great english easily understood, kindly pointed out everywhere we might trip, answered questions well. Highly tecommend.
Andriy was awesome. He was incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to walk me through each area with such passion and historical detail. He was very attentive to all of my questions and took great care in answering all of my questions. He made the tour a must recommend for anyone
Great experience, our tour guide very knowledgeable and friendly (Andres) we learned a lot about Lisbon and Portugal history, thanks for this opportunity
Very informative tour. Learned about the history of Portugal and the importance and historical relevance of the castle.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and articulate. He walked us through the history of the monuments and their relevance in Portugal currently. We enjoyed the experience.
I cannot say enough good things about our tour guide, Andriy. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and spoke excellent English. He was able to answer just about any question we asked. In summary, highly recommended.
Great tour! Andriy was an excellent tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and provided a great overview of the sites.
Our guide was respectful and knowledgeable. It was a hot day and he made every attempt to find shade when he was speaking. We explored Alfama and toured the Castle of Saint George.
Andriy was a fantastic guide, he was very knowledgeable and gave us awesome insight into the history of Lisbon, the Alfama neighborhood and the churches and the castle. Having a small group of 8 was perfect, we weren’t rushed and were able to take our time seeing everything and asking questions.
The guide was extremely efficient and intelligent and thorough and informative. One of the best guides we have ever had.
We had an excellent time with Ruis. He shared a tremendous amount of historical information about the various sites. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history of Portugal.
Good overview of wider Lisbon thanks to the view from the top. Andriy the guide was well spoken and knowledgeable.
Rui was our guide and he was very informative and friendly. He has a vast knowledge of not just the Castle, but of Lisbon as well.
Thorough review of the history of these key sites in alfama. We learned a lot of in short amount of time. Highly recommend.
Very quick and responsive. Purchased online in 5 minutes and saved me an hour or more by not having to stand in line at the castle
Very nice tour. We were scheduled for a morning tour and the operator contacted us asking if we would like to reschedule to the afternoon based on the weather forecast. Glad we did. The guide was knowledgeable and tailored the tour based on our group's wants. He added a coffee break in at the groups request where we set and had a great visit learning about daily life for people in Lisbon. I recommend this tour.
Fantastic experience, great walking tour across the sights of Alfama. Followed by a fantastic detailed tour of the Castle of St George.
Our tour of the Alfama was Excellent!!! We got there a few monies late due to an Uber driver coming really late to pick us up! Our tour guide was a young man that was wearing a long sleeve UV shirt in 95 degree weather and he never looked hot or uncomfortable! He was an excellent tour guide and his knowledge about the Lisbon cathedral and the Castle was Exceptional!! We learned sooo much about the history of the Alfama area and the castle!! Excellent tour with an exceptional guide!
Guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. It was like having a cheat sheet on the tour. Also stopped at some hidden gems we wouldn’t have known about otherwise.
This was the best city tour I have taken. The walking tour with Andriy was really enjoyable. His range of knowledge was amazing. He gave us a real understanding of Lisbon and the culture of the area. His approach was very personalised, responsive, with masses included but also not rushed, at a perfect pace of walking and pausing to talk in the shade; we were a small group which I would thoroughly recommend. The information and communication before the trip was reassuring and informative. This tour has certainly made our trip and I would definitely use Viator and small group walking tours again.
Our guide, Andriy Voyevoda, was incredible! He created an amazing experience. He answered all of our questions and made it a lasting memory. He was very kind and said numerous times to "watch your step" around the cobbled streets and the castle. Without him, it would just have been a walk. With him, it was a history lesson.
This was a great way to see one of Lisbon's top attractions along with other stops on the way. Our guide, Andre was fantastic (I had the pleasure of having him lead my tour in Belem, as well). It was a picturesque walk which included stop at some beautiful viewpoints and well as time at the end to explore the castle walls on your own.
I would give this tour even 10 stars if it were possible. A brilliant walking tour around all the significant landmarks of Lisbon. The tour guide, Rui, is super professional, very knowledgeable, and experienced. He knows a lot of details about every corner in Lisbon. I truly enjoyed the tour and the chosen route. I heard interesting facts and learned new things about history. Also, the number of attendees in the group is not too large, making it convenient to listen and easy to follow the guide. It is highly recommended!
Excellent guide. Command of local history. Enjoyed the experience. Learned some Portuguese history coupled with a good walk led by a great guide. Met some nice people in our group.
What a great day of learning about Lisbon, St. Anthony, the Castle of St. George and so much more. Our guide Andriy was knowledgeable, interesting and a wealth of information to make our tour interesting and memorable. I highly recommend this tour when in Lisbon!
Rui was the best guide we've ever had on a walking tour. His knowledge of the history and culture on our tour was incredible. He took his time to explain the significance of the areas we toured like none other. A genuine nice guy as well. By the way, the others in the group had cancelled so it was a 2.5 hour private tour for me and my wife. A true professional.
Andre was kind and very knowledgeable - the tour had a good mix of incredible views, architectural interests and peacocks!
Very informative and pleasant guide. Visited a couple of churches and view points but the skip the line at the castle saved hours. Guide had a real passion for the castle and the views are terrific. A camera obscura show was included which was interesting. Didn’t hang around for the mock battle!
The tour director was amazing and very thorough! What I thought would just be a tour of the castle, turned out to be an interesting tour of the Alfama region of Lisbon too.
We had a tour with Andriy in the afternoon. Even though we were only a group of 2 people, they were nice enough to not cancel the tour. Andriy was very knowledgeable and explained a lot of history of Lisbon to us. The fast track access to the castle would be especially useful during peak tourist season in Lisbon.
Visited Church of Saint Anthony, Se Lisboa (Cathedral), and Castle of St. George. Our guide spoke fluent English and was very knowledgeable about the history of all these locations as well as the historic Alfama neighborhood. Really enjoyed the 360° views around the city of Lisbon!
Andriy was a fantastic and knowledgeable tour guide. He made Lisbon’s history come to life! He brought us to the most picturesque places in the Alfama and knew the best details about every street! We got a VIP tour of the cathedral and learned about St. Anthony.. the patron matchmaking saint of lost items. He knew the castle of Saint George like the back of his hand. Andriy is very intelligent and kept us interested and captivated about the siege and earthquake. We had a marvelous time and highly recommend this tour and tour guide. Leah M
Andriy was absolutely excellent throughout this tour. He had in depth knowledge of the city’s history and was well versed in history in general from what I could gather. He was on time, and gave plenty of opportunity for us to ask questions or even just take a break where needed. Thanks so much Andriy! Others should definitely give this tour a go to get a proper in depth insight to a piece of Portugal history.
Dimitri was incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly. He brought everything we saw to life. Could not recommend more!
