Itinerary
Immerse yourself in the opulent Afonso de Albuquerque Square and Garden, a verdant tribute to the brilliant Afonso de Albuquerque, Portugal's viceroy who expanded its eastern empire with unmatched strategic acumen. This square isn't just a space; it's a celebration of Albuquerque's legacy, adorned with sculptures that bring his epic tales to life, nestled amidst exotic plants that echo the voyages that connected continents.
The Thai Pavilion stands as a testament to Portugal's far-reaching trade routes, stretching from the aromatic bazaars of India to the vibrant courts of Thailand and Sri Lanka. This exquisite structure symbolizes the cross-cultural exchanges initiated by Portuguese explorers, which eventually introduced tea to Britain, courtesy of Lady Catarina of Bragança. It's a poignant reminder of how Portugal stitched the fabric of global trade and culture.
Indulge in the legendary Pastéis de Belém, a culinary masterpiece born in Belém. Each bite of these creamy, flaky custard tarts tells a story of culinary invention, tradition, and the secret recipe guarded by the monks of Jerónimos Monastery. Tasting these delights is not just a treat; it's an essential rite of passage for any visitor to Belém, embodying the essence of Portuguese sweetness and flair.
Stroll down the historic Chão Salgado Alley, where the shadows of the Marquis of Pombal loom large. This alleyway whispers the tales of his iron-fisted rule, from the modernization of Lisbon to the dark days of the Távoras Massacre. His controversial legacy, marked by ruthless policies and bold urban planning, forever altered the course of Portuguese history, making this site a fascinating study in power and progress.
Behold the Jerónimos Monastery, a Gothic marvel that stands as a monumental homage to Prince Henry the Navigator. This architectural jewel, with its intricate carvings and majestic cloisters, blends Christian symbolism with motifs from the sea, symbolizing the Age of Discovery's brave expeditions. The monastery is not just a building; it's a narrative in stone of Portugal's quest for new worlds, inspired by Henry's visionary spirit. Please note that we will not go inside Mosteiro dos Jerónimos except for the church, although many traveller's choose this spot to visit after the tour.
Praça do Império marks the site of the grand New State World exhibition of 1940, celebrating over 800 years of Portuguese resilience and innovation, from its founding in 1140 to its rebirth after Spanish rule in 1640. This sprawling plaza, with its monumental fountain and gardens, serves as a living museum of Portugal's enduring legacy and cultural pride, inviting visitors to ponder the indomitable spirit of a nation reborn.
Stand in awe at the Compass Rose and Mappa Mundi, a sprawling homage to the navigational prowess that propelled Portugal to the forefront of global exploration. Spanning 50 meters, this intricate mosaic not only maps the routes that stitched the world together but also celebrates the adventurers who dared to dream beyond the horizon. It's a stunning visual ode to the Age of Discovery, capturing the essence of Portugal's navigational genius.
The Monument to the Discoveries looms on the Belém waterfront as a striking tribute to the fearless explorers who expanded the known world. This towering structure, pointing boldly towards the sea, is lined with statues of Portugal's greatest adventurers, their gazes fixed on distant shores, inspiring all who visit to embrace the spirit of exploration that defines the Portuguese soul. Please note that we will not go inside Padrão dos Descobrimentos, although many traveller's choose this spot to visit after the tour.
Wander along the Tagus River Bank, where the waters that once bore caravels to new worlds now reflect the modern majesty of the 25th of April Bridge and the sanctity of the Christ the King statue. This picturesque riverside invites contemplation of Portugal's maritime glory, echoed in the feats of aviation pioneer Gago Coutinho, whose daring transatlantic flight bridged continents and skies alike.
The Gardens of the Tower of Belém offer a tranquil retreat, a lush oasis framing the historic Belem Tower. These gardens, with their manicured lawns and panoramic views, provide a serene backdrop to the tower that once guarded the gateway to Lisbon, inviting visitors to linger and reflect on the journeys that shaped the globe.
The Tower of Belém stands sentinel at the mouth of the Tagus River, a symbol of Portugal's age of maritime adventure and discovery. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its ornate Manueline architecture and battlements that have watched over centuries, is not just a tower but a beacon of the nation's enduring spirit of exploration and resilience. Please note that we will not go inside Torre de Belém, although many traveller's choose this spot to visit after the tour.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, and it was a great way to see all the sights in Belém.
We enjoyed this tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Pastel de Belem were nice treat . We were not able to get to monastery as it was closed at the time of the tour.
We learned so much and had a great time. Sylvestro was funny, smart, interesting, and he took care of us on a hot day - making sure we had shady spots to stop. The stop to get the official and only pasties de Belem was a highlight we are still talking about!
Out tour with Margarita was great!. Although not Portuguese, Margarita spent 3 hours explaining all about the Belem area and history. The tour for us was perfect in every way. Informative in a fun and engaging way. Margarita went out of her way to give us the best experience and making the effort to get to know each of our small group of 6 participants. This tour exceeded our expectations and getting the opportunity to skip the very long line to purchase the 'original' and by far best and custard tart from the only place in the World that sells them was an absolute bonus! If you can get the opportunity to do this tour with Margarita then do it.
We loved Fernanda !!! She was funny and very informative and sweet. Will definitely be booking more tours with her.
Great walking tour. Just the right time length (2.5 hours), full of wonderful historic insights and perspective. Belém (our tour guides) was absolutely outstanding! Super friendly personality and excited about what she was sharing with us!
Margarita was a great guide. Very knowledgeable, learned a lot of history of Portugal. Highly recommend.
Great tour. Very informative. Got custard tarts. Yum!! So helpful guide (Margaritas)
Wow Fernanda is amazing! My mom (67) and I (39) booked her Belem tour very last minute the night before and this was the MOST informative and insightful tour. Fernanda knows her history and provides context as to what else is going on in the world at the time key historical events were happening in Belem. That provides a great perspective. Not to mention, her explanation is very thorough and easy to understand. She has a great heart, good humor and very kind. I would take this tour and any tour with Fernanda again!
The tour was ok until the tour guide started harassing one of the girls for leaving early without paying…don’t advertise it as a free tour if it isn’t…she told the girl she was being rude and then continued to complain to us about “people like that” and then she was being unprofessional and talking about how she needs the money and has a baby on the way.
Me and my family took a tour with Fernanda and she was the best thing in our day . She gave us the best experience in belem area with so much humor and information . She literally was the best guide i have been with in lisbon
Fernanada was exceptional! She is so charismatic, funny, and candid in a way that feels so refreshing and natural especially given that there is a breadth of information that is being relayed to us. (Typically that sort of thing can fall flat or feel overstimulating, but she kept our attention) 10/10 would recommend!
Margarita was excellent in explaining the history, telling interesting stories, and sharing great tips.
Margarita was a great knowledgeble guide I enjoyed so much her passion for history. She has vast knowledge and in just 2:30 hours she covers the discovery era that we do not know much about. Higly recommended tour
We had a great time learning about the wonderful history of Belém, and our guide did an amazing job describing each stop and telling us fascinating details.
Rikardo was a very knowledgeable and very professional, he had a great personality
Great tour with Laura, was an entertaining and fun.
We had a small group of 10 people so it was easy to hear Margarita (M). M also made sure that everyone is ready before leaving a stop, and that everyone is within hearing range before starting to explain important history for each stop, tried to find good shade for our group. Despite being from a different country and settling in Portugal, M was very enthusiastic and we learned a lot about the history of what makes Belem important to Portugal. We were also given lots of time to take pictures and the pace was good for my elderly parents. The dessert Pasteis de Belem wasn't included in the price, but were still able buy however many we want 6 for 3 people (instead of just 1 per person and if you didn't want it you weren't forced) because M has "connections" haha For the cheap cost per person (5$) and 2.5 hour length of the tour, I think it is comparable to other similar tours of the Belem area on this site, so I suggest going with this tour!!
It was a great tour and our guide Margarita did a great job we had a great time. Thank you
Belem tour was very informative. We made a quick stop for pastel de Belem. Tour lasted almost three hours. Atmosphere was very nice. Our group was small. Other participants (family from India/Germany) were fun and polite. This tour is good for families, couples and solo travelers. Fernanda was excellent guide. She was so kind and knowledgeable. I enjoyed this tour and definitely recommend Fernanda as your guide.
Loved our guide Claudia and the perspective she offered on Portugal’s historic legacy. She was very engaging and explained the sights and history so well.
It was a pleasure to see that Miriam was going to be our tour guide for the second time. We already knew it would be a great tour and it was. This tour is much easier walking as there were no hills on the route.
Fernanda was outstanding in her presentation. She was knowledgeable, professional, humorous,. The tour was a very positive experience for our first visit to Portugal.
Guide was extremely knowledgeable, you could tell he is very passionate about history and provided a lot of information. Definitely hydrate and take a hat and sunscreen. He also stopped at the Pasteis Belém, which were amazing and the store was really beautiful as well. Definitely worth doing it!
Our guide Fernanda was lovely and extremely knowledgeable. Went to the Pasteis de Belém to sample their tarts & coffee which were yummy. Fernanda is very informative. Thank you 😊 ❤️.
I loved Fernanda explanations. I recommend this tour 100%
Great experience . Cecilia is a great guide, very nice history lesson in a very nice easy way !!
She was great!! Definitely recommend😊
Yerlin was our tour guide and she did an amazing job ! She was super friendly and did an excellent job teaching us about the history in a really detailed and engaging way.
Yarlim was an excellent tour guide! She gave us a lot of history details that we were not aware of. Great memories for sure.
Our guide Cecelia was great! She did a great job covering the rise of Portugal as a kingdom and how they grew to have outposts in so many parts of the globe. The walking part for this tour is flat and easy, and near the riverfront which is nice. She of course points out all the museums and government buildings nearby, and discusses several statues and monuments we pass by. She sent us all an email with a bunch of recommendations on other things to see and do, and places to eat. She even sang some fado for us - very talented! She finds shade most times when we stop to talk, but at the very end there is none, so if it's a hot day, be warned.
Cecilia was a wonderful tour guide! Extremely informative and enthusiastic, making for a fabulous ~2 hour walking tour. Highly recommend for anyone visiting the area.
Great tour guide. Great experience! Interesting and fun
Our guide Odelia, was lovely. Knowledgeable, a sense of humour, and with nice stories to make the tour even more interesting. And, super helpful. Very happy with the experience.
Miriam was super knowledgable and funny! Can highly recommend! Good timing of the stops and locations. I learned a lot
We had a great time on our tour with Miriam from Take Free Tours. My family with two kids (9 and 12) learned a lot about the history of Portugal and Belém. We even got to try some tasty tarts without waiting in line! Recommend this tour for sure!
Miriam was an excellent tour guide. She was friendly, approachable and very knowledgeable. Loved the addition of pasteis into the tour! Thanks, Miriam!
Vivian was excellent! Learned so much about the region and the monastery and pastes de Beleim were wonderful!
Fantastic Tour by FERNANDA CANAS. We did two tours with her, two days in a row. She is so entertaining and well-informed at the same time. A pleasure to explore Belem with her and the group! And she knows good shortcuts, so walking isn’t exhausting. Thanks Fernanda❤️🙏
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the best walking tours I’ve done. I joined both the Belém and Lisbon walking tours, and they were absolutely fantastic — especially thanks to Rikardo. The energy he brings to the tour is on another level. You can really feel how passionate he is, and he manages to transmit that enthusiasm to the entire group the whole time. The first tour in Belém was so good that I immediately decided to book the Lisbon tour for the next day to explore the other side of the city with him as well. Beyond the tours themselves, I also asked him for recommendations, and he gladly helped me organize and book activities for Porto and Sintra. I highly recommend this experience, especially if you can do it with Rikardo!
Our guide Meriam was fantastic. Enjoyed learning about the history of Belem and made our trip more interesting.
The experience is horrible with Viator .. we paid $10 for 3 people for the reservation for this tour but surprised that the amount paid was took by viator for a tour that is free per the guide and we must paid $15 per person to the guide guy
Cecelia was an incredible tour guide! Her bubbly personality was injected into the histories she was sharing making it infinitely more interesting. The best part was her brief Fado performance- we were expecting a video of some sort and were surprised with her beautiful voice instead.
Súper recomendable David para el walking tour
Fernanda was excellent and very knowledgeable! Highly recommend. I know my history but she taught me so much!
Our guide, Fernanda, was terrific—very well-spoken and knowledgeable about the city. Her use of humor added to the enjoyment of the experience. Her insider information allowed us to skip the line at Pastéis de Belém. We were able to enjoy delicious pastéis de nata and take a restroom break without delaying the tour.
Belen is the best tour guide I’ve ever had! She was knowledgeable and friendly and told all the stories with passion and enthusiasm!
We did a trip with Belén and she did a great job. Good storytelling and she put so much effort in everything! I enjoyed it a lot and it was good for someone who wants to have an overview of Belem.
It was a great experience Belen was so nice I would recommend to everyone who comes to lisbon
